C:\>nslookup meta.webapps.stackexchange.com
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  10.0.0.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    meta.webapps.stackexchange.com.gateway.2wire.net
Address:  216.146.35.99

woa ... that's not a correct address ... looks like it's appaending your default domain onto the query

i think it is because one day my isp's dns was all kinds of messed up, so my router has dyndns ips for static dns
hrm

nah ... it's a windows thing ... i forget what causes it but if it gets a bad response, or can't talk to the dns servers then it does that

oh, ok then >_>
not a networking gal (:

no worries, most people wouldn't know it either ... i've just spent WAY to much time futzing with DNS servers :)

5:05 AM
ponders removing the static dns and testing the isp dns again

go for google's dns
8.8.8.8

yeah i remember adding that in also. i don't remember why i switched to dyndns

which reminds me ... i need to change my dns
stupid comcast hijack dns servers

Hmmm.. I'm trying solve the "command left in #input after room switch" problem

google has 4.4.4.4 too or something similar? wonder why i went away from google
@YiJiang, the what now?

5:07 AM
umm no 4.4.4.4 is level3 I believe

@rchern /switch or /join in Firefox will leave the command in the localStorage draft cache, remember?

> Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers
i was close >_>

random trivia : anyone know where level3 communications got thier name ?

@YiJiang, just set $("#input").val("") ?

@rchern Well, if you decide to nuke #input on load, then you'll wipe out legitamate drafts

5:10 AM
how could you have something else in there?

@rchern If you decide to close the tab, or switch in some other manner. Not everybody's as addicted to the keyboard as you, ya know?

if you're typing in /switch, then you don't have any other input in the box
@YiJiang, but the issue is when you're typing /switch. not when you're doing something else.

@rchern No, I think I have a solution. Let me test it out first

@Zypher No clue. But they started out as a mining company right? So I'll guess something to do with that, even though it seems unlikely. :P

@YiJiang, i don't understand the issue.

5:13 AM
@Tim nope they came from ... Cisco I believe ... Hint: Which layer of the OSI model does packet routing happen on ?

I am...also confused.

and that makes me hesitant to add code to solve something that isn't there. let's keep the code clean and clutter-free (:

If I do a /switch, the onunload event fires the moment you call location.href = '...'

yes i get that.

That happens before #input gets wiped with the CommandState.SucceededDoClear

5:15 AM
which is why i suggested $("#input").val("")

Before that line... right

yes

@Zypher Ah ha. :P
Makes sense. :)

7 mins ago, by rchern
@YiJiang, just set $("#input").val("") ?
why would this not work?

Okay, added that to /leave /join and /switch
Need to test now
Hmmm... not working... why?

5:18 AM
"not working"? and you call yourself a programmer? (;

@rchern It's Sunday... please excuse me while I not work

Let's see how long it takes for someone to come running to Meta telling us they can't log into SO at this very second..

no, not "not work", "not working" being the description of your problem rather than giving any details that might actually help (;

that would be my queue to exit :-D

@TimStone Hey where's the "login" link at SO? I just see "careers" instead.</playingAlong>

5:22 AM
@Zypher Heheh. Looks like the migration is going off very well, good job! :D
@PopularDemand It's a new "Sell your soul to our associates or you can't come in" arrangement.

Ah ha! Got it working now.

@Tim yep, going pretty smoothly ... couple of hickups ... mostly now the biggest pain is that i'm on the east cost

@rchern what is the SO password?

@rchern The black box is working now after I threw a wrench into it

5:24 AM
@YiJiang That poor wretch!

See, there's a job posting for Oracle, proof they've made a deal with the devil.

@PopularDemand That would be @rchern, of course!

@Zypher Well, hiccups are better than catastrophic failure by a long shot, so we'll take it. :P

haha, same here, same here

@PopularDemand Sometimes all it needs is a little human sacrifice.

5:26 AM
@TimStone I'm sorry, my spelling is wrenched.

what would be me?

@YiJiang But your HTML is clean, and that's what really counts, so we forgive you.

@rchern I know the mods gave you the password to use SO even during the migration. I want it!

Unbelievable! The question still hasn't appeared yet

@PopularDemand that'll cost you ... and no we didn't give it to @rchern
@YiJiang the android people got uppity when we moved them

Q: Solid error on android.stackexchange.com

Al EverettAll URLs on android.stackexchange.com redirect to http://android.stackexchange.com/error?aspxerrorpath=/

5:35 AM
I wanted to ask what a solid error was, but then I decided not to.

LOL
so i've graduated from secret chat access to secret site access?

We know you have the keys to the castle now, there's no escaping it.

@TimStone Less vibration and more intermolecular forces than a gaseous error

@YiJiang This just brings up more questions!

@TimStone Brush up on your knowledge of atoms and states of matter!
We can also presume it's more filling than a liquid error

5:40 AM
I had a Bose-Einstein condensate error, but I cleaned up after myself.

@YiJiang Ah, that's it. solid error = pickled mangoes.

@TimStone I just made that error, and I didn't go onto MSO to complain! What's wrong with these Androld people?

@YiJiang They're Google-bound, so they assume the internet has all of the answers.
In other news, I'm beginning to question how I spend my Saturday nights.

@Zypher I'm not buyin' it. (ba dum pshhh)

Yay! (On reflection: by god are we lame....)

@PopularDemand damn!

@YiJiang I like to avoid unpleasant details like that
in The SO Tavern (General) on Stack Overflow Chat, 3 mins ago, by Yi Jiang
Come over to the MSO Tavern! It's slightly more lively, and there's a SF admin if you've got any question about the migration
Oh sure, invite more people over to witness it too. :P

@TimStone Why not?
Fun with the pipe character for the whole family!

5:57 AM
shrugs

Also, the Chinese language lends itself to some pretty weird smiles. Example:

haha, hurry and hide @Zypher!

It's so cute!
The strokes look like eyebrows (unless your computer isn't equip to render Chinese characters, in which case this will just look like a box, with not smiley :()
囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 囧 !!

I'm going to have to raise an eyebrow at this one.
Which is much more effectively illustrated by the related MSN smiley, but I don't have those here.

6:02 AM
Damn i was trying to stay low profile :)
going to bed soon anyway .. hint hint

There's no one over there anyway, don't worry. ;)
Does that mean that we've gotten all of our cattle safely across the river?

we are counting them now

wonders when association on meta will get turned on again

oh hai

@rchern ... next build

6:05 AM
'Ello @radp

wahoo

somebody knows the dev.meta.SO password and he isn't @rchern?!
HAX!

o:

calls shenanigans

@radp yes it's the same as my luggage

6:07 AM
@TimStone on me having any super secret password? smart move (;

@rchern You don't need the key when someone opens the door for you!
I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that we had indeed put that theory to rest..

I think all the evidence points to a self-evident truth, @rchern is balpha's secret sister!

So you should /blame Marc. :P

heh

Hard to keep secret from your own blood.

6:11 AM
oy

why else would balpha conceal his surname behind that "alpha" bit?
Does anyone even buy his professor shenanigans??

One day, a conspiracy theorist will stumble upon these chat transcripts with no prior context....
That, or Fox will steal them and make a new sitcom.

you mean that isn't the plan for making the The Answering of Questions Network series?

@radp Oh right, I forgot about that.

6:16 AM
i just wonder how i manage to end up at the center of these conspiracies (;

@rchern The same way that so many tables ended up on SO...no one knows.

haha

I'M ALIVE!
In the sense that SO has been restored to it's identifying-me state.

ditto
hmm, my SEModifications.user.js script throws an error if you aren't viewing a question page

g'night guys

6:25 AM
@rchern Must be throwing a tantrum since the chat script has been getting so much attention.
@Zypher G'night!

nite @Zypher
@TimStone i'm guessing it just assumes the elements it is looking for exist.

Though I don't get an error, but I probably don't have the latest version?

var href = $("#question-header a").attr("href").replace("questions","posts");
calling .replace on a jQuery object probably isn't good. but it seems to happen from this line when #question-header doesn't exist i think

Hmm

doing an implicit [0] in there?

6:28 AM
Doesn't attr() do that?

yeah, attr() gives a string

err yeah, i guess i meant is .attr doing an implicit [0]?

I'm not sure if the replacement works then, though.

> Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'replace' of undefined

@rchern Yeah, that makes sense. I'm just not sure why I don't get the error, heh.
Ah, there it is.

6:33 AM
hmm, so what's the proper design? do a .each over the jQuery object and call .attr inside there? seems weird. just do an if statement to check the length?

No, the problem is that .attr() returns undefined when there's no matching attribute.
Well, so yes, checking the length might be best then.

the comment links are ok because that's in a .each

var href = ($('#question-header a').attr('href') || '').replace('questions', 'post');, heh

well, the next line doing substring and lastIndexOf won't go well either

Yeah, you should do an if statement on the length though, because the following .substring call will also go awry.

6:38 AM
(:

Yeah, heheh.

fixedededed

Nice, although that pesky space is still there. ;)

what space?

"<span class='lsep'>|</span> <a href='" + href + "'>timeline</a>"
The one between the </span> and the <a>, so the link is four or five pixels right of where it should be.
I'm probably the only person that would notice such a trivial detail though, so it's not a big deal. :P

Hooray!

it is in the same repo as the chat script, you could have changed (:

I figured that it was a bit much to start a pull request over something so small, heh.

(:

Hmm, almost at 600 upvotes..I wonder if 25% of them are on questions..

6:57 AM
that's not how the badge works

Oh, it's not?

(voted on 600 questions) && (25% of total votes == questions)

hrm, do close votes count? :-}

If you were to replace "upvotes" with "votes" (what I actually meant anyway), is that the same? :P

because according to the Questions with Highest Vote Velocity page they'd do...

7:00 AM
@TimStone, per what you said, if you had 600 votes, with 25% on questions, that'd be 150 votes on questions. 150 is not "voted on 600 questions"

Oooh.
I see where my brain was failing now. :P

it trips up a bunch of people

In that case, I'm nowhere close ;)
Though as far as the 25% is concerned, I may be. But that still puts me a long way off of the minimum count. :)

And document.write, of all things to find a vulnerability in

7:03 AM
@YiJiang Heh :P

Also, that is one of the most awesome domain name I've seen

Q: So what exactly does “from __future__ import barry_as_FLUFL” do?

Oh Python..
The comment on the answer also amuses me.

hello folks. Who does agree with me? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/64308/try-xyz-answers

11:07 AM
@litb: sometimes "just do X" is appropriate
I don't know why you got such a negative reaction on that question though (but I didn't read the revision history)

@Roger I originally linked to a question where there was an answer of myself, and a "try xyz" answer that was accepted. People thought I would just ask for the sake of making mine the accepted one

@litb: re the question that sparked it, was it I that pointed out on irc the problem with UB?

I do not have such silly intentions

I know you enough to give more faith than that, but I guess it could've appeared that way

Roger, yes that could have been you. Definitely someone from IRC

11:18 AM
I'm tempted to answer with the safe_ctype template that fixes that, but meh

=)
go ahead haha

could always wait a month for necromancer, maybe that'd be enough encouragement :)

@Roger ah yes, now I remember. We talked about it, and I opposed to that ::isspace and you commented, supporting my position. Then you mentioned the problem with unsigned char/ negative values.

<ctype.h> is nasty that way

cough

hahaha
i'll get right on that...
i'm nowhere close. 1320 and 2219 on SO and MSO.

I think I'm 325 on MSO, so two upvotes would work there, heh. :P

Q: Reputation missing after data center move

systempuntooutWhat happened to my reputation? I'm sure that part of my points are still in Oregon. Now I have just 5787 point and a handful of cheap bronze badges. Could you plese verify what happened and rollback to my previous rep proved by this old screenshot? * * ok, if you can't give me all them back,...

Awesome. Why didn't I think of trying that?

Heh :P

4:57 PM
Anyone else getting c:/fakepath/... when they try to use the built in image uploader?
imgur.com works for me, but not the meta.so uploader that works through imgur

hm?

@PeterAjtai You're using IE8? :P

5:35 PM
@TimStone - No. I'm using Chrome. I've used the uploader successfully before. Issue just showed up today.

Hmm.

it comes up to my pictures directory in chrome dev
la la la la, i love duplicate answers on a question

@PeterAjtai I get that on Linux
and Windows too
I guess it's some kind of privacy measure :)

blah, and mine didn't get accepted
oh well >_>

@PeterAjtai How is the path appearing, by the way (maybe screenshot)?
/fakepath/ is the HTML 5-specified way of "handling" masking the actual filesystem path from JavaScript, heh...but not sure why it would appear here, hrm.
> On getting, it must return the string "C:\fakepath\" followed by the filename of the first file in the list of selected files, if any, or the empty string if the list is empty. On setting, it must throw an INVALID_ACCESS_ERR exception.
It must return a Windows path? That makes sense..

5:55 PM
i'm curious why i don't see it

@rchern What was the question?
Yeah, I'm confused on that too...

just a simple one about sql formatting
no biggie

Ah

though i find it funny the other answerer didn't vote up the question

Why's that?

5:59 PM
if i answer the question, generally i think the question has merit

Ah, gotcha. :)

so wouldn't that mean you'd toss it an upvote? shrugs
my rep on so is 1342. right digits, wrong order (;

That makes sense. Admittedly, that's not what I do personally, but it's also possible that I'm heartless like that. :P
Nice, heheh.

In case you haven't yet, I heartily recommend watching Sintel (open movie made with Blender)
it's awesome

It is awesome.
Though also evil for making me wish that I could do epic things (or anything really) with Blender. :P
The meta inbox lives!

6:07 PM
I've done a few things with Blender for a while, so I know the basics. But to be really good at it, you need a lifetime.
But now I'm working on the Unicornify movie, and that uses my own 3d engine :)

Yeah, I definitely haven't given myself enough dedicated time to sit down and even learn just the very simple stuff....maybe one day, heh. :P

Heh, if only there was a Stack Exchange site to help people that want to learn Blender and stuff. :)

Hey, fancy referral link page.
Will be be able to ask questions on this proposed site about balpha's own 3D engine?

@PeterBoughton Finding the time is the most difficult part, but if I find some soon I'd definitely be interested in committing to that proposal, thanks for the link :)

6:24 PM
Have you ever looked at a proposal but decided not to commit/follow because of the list of others who signed up to commit/follow?

I don't think so, has this happened to you? :P

@PopularDemand So long as it's a released engine and a helpful question, I can't see why not. If it was just balpha using it, the question would be too localised though.
@TimStone Tim, yeah - time is the hardest part, but I do find Stack sites make it easier to learn in small doses of time (which is why I'm so eager for the 3D proposal to get created.)

@TimStone Only just now, when you expressed interest in the 3D site.

Oh, snap
I did walk right into that one. ;)

(Okay, usually I think the slash commands are dumb, but I could go for /rimshot, /sadtrombone &c.)
@TimStone Seriously though, I was just looking through some of the newer proposals, and I saw two names I recognized on a single one. It won't stop me from following, but that is a bit... worrisome.

6:31 PM
@PopularDemand hehehehe

@PopularDemand Yeah, I imagine if I ran into that scenario it might make me a bit reluctant as well. For the most part, any proposal I've looked at (though I haven't been confident enough to commit to any yet) has people I've never even heard of (as far as seeing their questions/answers on SO goes).

committing is pretty painless (:

It just occurred to me that the only people who can vote to delete don't benefit from it.

(and you can uncommit up until the proposal moves in to private beta)

@rchern Right, but I think it's a disservice to commit to the proposal if there's no way in hell I'm going to be able add any value when it goes to beta, though...I'd rather commit with the intention of contributing. :)

6:34 PM
hehe well yeah. but i bet you could come up with a few questions. and you never know what you'll be able to answer

That's exactly why you should be able to indicate the 'level of value' when you commit, instead of just a binary on/off thing.

I haven't been able to come up with a single question so far, heh. ;)
Though to be fair, on SO in particular that's because they've all already been answered, and I learned to use this amazing thing called search..

(;

@rchern In my personal experience, I commit with every intent of participating, but don't have much to contribute.

...or you could just make sure you join right when it gets created and pilfer all the on-topic example questions (;

6:36 PM
Hah :P

@rchern I'm not down with that.
I firmly believe that the beta period is for asking questions that will draw experts in, not just any old on-topic question.

I'd still really like to commit to Healthcare IT, but not if it's only hospital-type people, meh. Stupid HL7...I should actually take some time to browse Area 51 a bit more and see what's out there, but I've told myself I should also do work first, so.. ;)

@PopularDemand, i wasn't being entirely serious with that suggestion. though the on-topic questions should be examples of valuable questions for the site

@PopularDemand This is a good point. If you don't get experts to visit and stick around, once you go through the list of trivial questions for the topic you start to kind of teeter off.

7:02 PM
Why is the current week on the activity page 8 days long?

@sepp2k Hmmm... I don't suppose we can just say "UTC difference" like usual and pretend it doesn't exist?

StackExchange has implemented the RFC that asks for weekday numbering to fully utilize 3 bits. Everything else is a waste of storage space.

@balpha Shouldn't the value 111 be reserved for metadata?

@balpha Then why does the last week only have 7 days?

to mess with your mind.

7:07 PM
@sepp2k it was only implemented this week
it may also be rolled back anytime
or not

yeah, back in the days we had eight days weeks.

@radp Back in the days... when you were using controlled substances?

Sunday, Sadday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

You mean that you haven't expanded the week to accommodate Katilsday, so NBC could show another Dateline? </Family Guy>

People however hated Sadday and it was abolished.
That didn't work too well.

7:10 PM
oh, here's another one: This week was a leap week!

Well, obviously. This week has too meaning to it to be numbered normally.

@balpha, we need an MSO -> English SE migration path for this question

when I said we needed to be able to migrate questions from anywhere to anywhere else, I was laughed upon! Laughed!

HAHAHAHA

You'll see when people will ask you how to implement the memoization pattern in Jython while cooking!

7:16 PM
hehe

While cooking on a boat!

@radp Mmm, Sea Jython Stew.

@radp you mean, you only have to do the work the first time, and when you cook the same thing again, the oven already knows the deal and just spits out the done meal?
sounds good to me

@balpha Yeah! See, ovens don't change contents no matter how many times you open and close them.

7:52 PM
thoughts on adding this to SEModifications.user.js?
$("#hlinks-user .reputation-score").parent().after("<a href='/reputation'>(audit)</a>")
it doesn't do anything to the displayed score. just adds a link to /reputation
this is for SEModifications.user.js not SEChatModifications.user.js

...oh right, SEModification, not SEChatModifications.

(:
