4:00 PM
@PopularDemand True. Although this time it was actually relevant to what we were talking about it. Sometimes I just blurt out "LINUX" with no provocation

Aww.
I had instantrimshot.com typed into the message box all ready to go, and you disappointed me.

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I was kind of surprised when I read the question too. Well, on top of that, the original version of his question had several implied questions in it, which was even more confusing, heh.

Well, who'd use "Microsoft Timestamps"?
Nobody, when you are trained to autocomplete it to "Microsoft™ Timestamps™ 2010 Home Premium Edition E"

I mean, the numbers go in descending order of time..ness. Not sure how anyone could muck that up. The conversion from UTC to local time, perhaps, but it gives you the current time in UTC, and your computer has a clock...not sure that it's overly difficult to figure that one out.
Heh :P

@TimStone The timezone part must be what he meant, I can't imagine what else he was stuck on. If he'd taken five seconds between rants to answer Grace Note's comments we'd know for sure

4:05 PM
Wow, I didn't notice that he actually posted the same comment twice. I also like his assumptions about the German population being incapable of handling "24h format", heh.

@MichaelMrozek Rrgh. It bothers me when there are people who can't be helped, even if it is their own fault. bal- fah! bal- fah!
(This is my new all-purpose replacement for situations that, in yesteryear, might have called for "Hulk smash!")

I'm actually confused why he thought that he was being treated unfairly. Given the type of response he could have gotten...but eh.

@TimStone When person A believes "humans aren't smart enough to understand UTC on their own" religiously, and person B believes "humans are smart enough to understand UTC on their own" religiously, there's no good ending in sight.

60 seconds is a painful amount of time to wait.

Hello
I made myself a javascript tool
I call it DevBox
the idea is that you give it an object with keys as commands and values as functions

4:14 PM
@PopularDemand Yeah, I suppose. I think it certainly would have been easier to give some credit to his point if he wasn't so insistent that everyone would be confused by that format, heh.

@radp Depends what you're waiting for.

and then it spawns a text box that you can type the commands into

@PopularDemand I'm testing a feedback animation in SO Live! that fades the rep number while updates are being fetched

so it is easy to run functions without making a UI element

4:16 PM
due to API polling guidelines I must poll once every 60 seconds at most.
I'm afraid that, if your connection is good enough, you just won't see anything happen.
okay, I was wrong

it confuses me, because i'll go back and my rep has changed, but i wasn't looking at the page and the notification is gone

@rchern Patches/forks welcome. Here are some ideas for improvement, in order of priority: [...] 3. disable updating when the tab isn't focused

i saw (;

It should be a simple if check... I just don't know what to check for.

@radp It depends what you had in mind, I guess.
I believe window receives focus and blur events that you could listen to for those purposes, but it doesn't help the case where the page is active but someone isn't looking at it.

4:26 PM
Well, I'm not installing a screensaver over SE pages :P

Heheh

and there's always the issue when you are indeed actively looking at the page, but the top bar is not in view

@rchern What are you using in the way of Git tools by the way? I've never used Git (though I am trying to move us (at work) to a DVCS after realizing how awesome it is...Git admittedly didn't seem like the first choice, but I should try it first. :P).
@radp Ah, good point.

btw, for the What Were They Thinking?™ series:
$(".foo").fadeTo(time, opacity)
you don't fade to time, you fade to opacity in time milliseconds

@TimStone, GitExtensions which is a standalone and a vs plugin. i'm not sure it is the best way. i struggle with git still

4:31 PM
Ah ha

I'm abusing gists.github repos :)
although now that I finally set up SSH access I'm putting actual commit messages and tagging and doing all sort of things good people do with their repos.

Anyone else with Git on Windows experience wanna chime in on this one? ;)
Actual commit messages are so difficult...heh, I really need to setup a hook that checks for those to discipline myself.

Ah, I knew those advertisements might be useful one day :P

The one I removed the link for is Linux only, sorry.
uh...
> Git# as peer-to-peer content distribution system If you need to build a content distribution framework that will easily and efficiently transport content to different machines then you can easily build one on top of git.
also, if you could flag and blast this comment from that answer it'd be a good thing to do
> My name is Linus Torvalds, and I despise each and every single one of you. C# is for casuals. It isn't even a language! If you aren't using C, please take your hands off the keyboard at once, and find something solid to impale yourself upon. Have a nice day! – Not Linus Torvalds Sep 19 at 9:49

4:39 PM
@radp Done.

bugged

In other news, I guess it's time for me to promote one of those ground-breaking FOSS projects around here
cmon Dropbox.

@TimStone, got it working. pretty painless this time. github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts

Not enough jQuery

4:52 PM
How is everyone today?

@MichaelMrozek, not enough anything

What's there not to like about it?

@AidenBell That was me you were thinking of

Oh, it's a joke. That explains the lack of documentation

@rchern Git Extensions won't install for me...Well, more specifically, when I click to install msysgit it gets angry at me...Hrm.
@rchern Ah, good stuff :)

4:53 PM
@TimStone, i think i installed those separately because i wanted to use the latest versions?

Right, right "go dev or go home". Let me try that and see if I fare any better.

My experience with git on windows left me traumatized

That...doesn't encourage me, heh. :P

@MichaelMrozek, did you use Git Bash or Git Extensions?

@TheUnhandledException Hungry, it seems...I should do something about that soon, heh.

4:56 PM
@rchern I'm not sure what the difference is; I used msysgit, if that helps

Git Extensions is a gui

Ah. No, I just used it from a terminal
It was stunningly slow

I wonder if I should post it at all in the ad question.

post what?

The good part is, it'll bump the question to the top.

4:57 PM
@TimStone Yes probably. I know I am prone to delay eating when working on code problems, and it never makes my coding skill get any better, heh

The bad part is, somebody will find issue with it for completely emotional reasons.

anyway was just quickly checking in, wandering off again now. Maybe I'll be motivated to do some XMPP coding later. maybe not. We'll see :-)
catch you guys later

later

See ya!

hi/bye

I second @radp.

It's supposed to bother people with
Obsessive–compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a personality disorder which involves an obsession with perfection, rules, and organization. People with OCPD may feel anxious when they perceive that things are not right. This can lead to routines and rules for ways of doing things, whether for themselves or their families. bah, I was trying to find some sense in it
like a closed gate in a castle wall or something

5:13 PM
@MichaelMrozek That was my first thought, but I figured you couldn't possibly have posted it solely for that reason.

@PopularDemand, your next thought should have been but then again, this is @MichaelMrozek we're talking about... (;

@PopularDemand Sorry my images aren't up to your posting standards :)
@rchern Precisely

@rchern It was, but my next thought was that he was off today:
1 hour ago, by Popular Demand
I had http://www.instantrimshot.com/ typed into the message box all ready to go, and you disappointed me.

I will aspire to be funnier in the future

hehe, good luck

5:23 PM
:244389 What about it?
Interesting, chat auto-replaces ":2489024" with "@author" when the post you're replying to is deleted.

Hi @Popular

@MarkC Hello there.

@PopularDemand He wanted to screenshot it for use in the question itself, apparently

Wow, that dishwasher question is incredible.

indeed it's insane !

5:30 PM
@Popular yeah, hoped I was quick enough to do it unnoticed haha.. at least you found something new about the chat :P

pours out dregs of coffee in solemn memory of Community Wiki

Community Wiki is still alive!
@Popular @Shog9 I am looking at the CW threads right now, but can you give me a short summary of it all?

@MarkC When I was in college, the campus TV station did a show about cooking in clothes dryers. It was always playing in the dorm laundry rooms because the campus TV station didn't make many shows.
@MarkC I don't understand what you want a summary of.

The current status of community wiki.

@MarkC Q: "Folks misuse CW" A: "Then we'll remove the option. Problem solved!"

5:35 PM
I guess my question is, does this apply across all SE sites?

@MarkC Yes.

@MarkC, It was a problem in that users would misuse it by marking their sucky questions CW, so that they could 'get a pass' from those who would want to close sucky questions.

The bastards!

So by removing the choice from questions, it exposes all sucky questions to the light of thermonuclear closing.

Because, you can't normally close CW questions.

5:36 PM
Note that the only thing that really changed was the removal of the checkbox indicating "I want this to be a CW question as of right now." You can still force a question into CW-ness by editing it repeatedly.

Or posting 30 answers.

Well, I still like the questions on Programmers.

@LanceRoberts Nice word choice. Are you, too, excited about New Vegas?

New Vegas?

@MarkC A video game being released tomorrow (in the US).

5:38 PM
By the way, I got hungry just looking at Assaf's profile:
Mmmmm!

@Shog9 Well, it also protected them from downvotes, and started the whole "Uh, this is CW, that means I can post whatever I want" debate about 7 times per day

Hey! No need to remove.Good memory, I guess.
WHAT? You couldn't downvote wiki?

You could, but they didn't lose rep for it

Minus 2 rep per vote is not going to discourage anyone, I think.

@MichaelMrozek That debate was going on well outside of the whole "CW for OT" thing

5:40 PM
this almost looks like documentation...

Folks use whatever justification they can get their hands on. [subjective] tag, other OT questions that remain open, up-votes, one-off comments from Spolesky on a long-ago podcast...

@MarkC Grab a drink and a comfy chair.

Q: Should the weight of downvotes be increased?

Jeff AtwoodWhen we started Stack Overflow, we wanted to make sure that downvotes were more of a visual and psychological motivator than a punitive action. That's why upvotes are +10 downvotes are -2, and cost the casting voter -1 However, recently, I've seen Marc Gravell and Jon Skeet both say similar ...

Hah! @Popular, well, I just came out onto the patio so I might.

also, i totally just opened up the ask a question page to preview the markdown >_>

@rchern So?

5:43 PM
nothing, just found it mildly amusing

@PopularDemand I don't get to play many computer games, though I plan on getting Civ 5 for Christmas.

@rchern I do that all the time :)

(:

No no, download The Incredible Machine
See here:

waits in anticipation

5:50 PM
Oh sorry, got distracted by changes in favorites

A: What are the best games to help stimulate a programmer?

Mark CThe Incredible Machine and its sequels (2 more that I know of) and the wacky spin-off(s), "Sid & Al's Incredible Toons". They were challenging and fun puzzle games that required you to use a limited number of objects and creatures to achieve a goal. After you set everything up, you pressed ...

I plan to edit my post when I have a little time (video, links to HOTU, etc.)

@MarkC, distracted by real changes in favorites, or just the usual ghosts

Ghosts

@LanceRoberts Usual ghosts wouldn't have taken that long.
What, seriously?

Well I had to go reply to someone, too
on a ghost comment that I hadn't replied to earlier
I said someone was nitpicking when he criticized another user for saying "forum" instead of "Q&A"

@MarkC You've got your priorities all wrong. It's unix.SE > chat > SO > MSO > SE sites rchern doesn't like > SE sites rchern does like > work responsibilities

5:57 PM
o:

@rchern You're lucky I didn't list WA specifically. It wouldn't have gone well

you put unix.se at the wrong end of the list (:

Here is the comment (ignore the bickering)

Mod fight! Mod fight!

A: Is code literature?

G. RodriguesNo, code is not literature (or even art). Saying it is, only shows that you either do not know what code is or what literature is. Since this is a forum for programmers, my bet is on the second. The original meaning of art as techne seems to warrant the analogy. The analogy can be reinforced by...

5:59 PM
@PopularDemand There isn't nearly enough inter-SE fighting. I'm trying to change that

Go create a proposal for a site about that

@MichaelMrozek, well @Dori may or may not be here...

@MichaelMrozek Pah. It'll go the way of all user-submitted changes.

I like the name I had for that sort, "instant oatmeal sites"

@MarkC It's called programmers.SE. "Which SE is best? ...for programmers"

6:01 PM
That's off-topic there

has Emoticons been closed yet?

Where am I supposed to learn "emoticon ettiquete", history and customs?

Hi

@MichaelMrozek I believe Internets 59-290 are reserved for that purpose.

6:03 PM
@MichaelMrozek, until you see the beauty of the (:, your mind is not ready to learn.

@MichaelMrozek - Wow. I walk in here just to see my proposal shot down. Awww.

@Moshe, to be fair, it's been closed for 3 days.

@Moshe It was closed three days ago, so apparently you weren't tracking it very closely :)

Point: rchern!

^__^

6:06 PM
@rchern Excuse me? I was already saying that, only more slowly

@MichaelMrozek, @rchern - No, I wasn't. But then again, most of proposals don't move that quickly so I didn't bother.
I figured that if it did get support, it would take a very very long time.
Ok, gtg

@Moshe I would reply, but @rchern would probably just say whatever I want to say first
@rchern Happy now? HAPPY?

@MichaelMrozek Delay of game. That penalty is declined.

(:

bugged

6:08 PM
@PopularDemand, s/That penalty is declined/User must post in proper smileys the rest of the day/

ahem

Isn't that your crazy way?

@Shog9 I'm sure I'm going to regret asking this, but... why do you keep saying that?

Chat keeps refusing to clear the little number it puts in the title bar

6:10 PM
I figured we all /ignored @Shog9 ages ago

@MichaelMrozek She probably thought you meant :) and typed the parenthesis too quickly.

also, I read a question this morning which used "bugged" to describe some broken code, and thought it was funny

@MichaelMrozek Give me a break, it was quiet in here earlier today!

@Mich

@Shog9, you use Chrome right? @balpha has said there's a Chrome bug with setting the title

6:11 PM
yeah, I've commented on it before
it keeps manifesting itself in new and annoying ways

It works fine for me on chrome some.version as long as the page is focused and not the address bar or whatever

the sad thing is, I use Chrome for chat - if it wasn't for chat, it wouldn't be open
so I thought to myself, "aha, in some god-forsaken corner of the world, 'bugged' means 'broken', but here, it means 'annoyed' - I can mean both!"

Let it be known that I just answered before @rchern in the SO chat feedback room

@Shog9, it is a fine line between "hilarious iconoclast" and "bitter iconoclast"; how is it that you haven't fallen off yet?
@MichaelMrozek I provisionally believe you, but link/pics or it didn't happen.
I'd also accept video, if you've got it.

@PopularDemand my deep and abiding love of icons keeps me warm

6:16 PM
@MichaelMrozek, lies!

Q: How do I generate a random number in java between 450 and 150 that is a multiple of 10?

CheesegraterrSo far I have this code int w = (int)((450-150)*random()+150); This generates a number between 450 and 150... But I have no idea how to make that number a multiple of 10. Thanks in advance!

@rchern So instead you'd rather force us to make up questions just so you can post new answers? ;)
I took out anything that "does stuff", as I figure that it makes the most sense to call into your command structure if any functionality should be replicated through the navigation.

6:57 PM
@rchern Okay, we'll do this like Jeopardy!. Give me a good MSO answer, and I'll consider asking an appropriate question.
