@AidenBell Yeah, it's fine. Maybe it went down temporarily?

@MichaelMrozek hmmm ... seems to do it every 3 times or so at my end "turns torrent client down"
Looks like it isn't getting the JSON string

Odd. How often are you polling? There's some kind of rate limit for unregistered apps, but I don't know what it is

30s
Looks like throttling
2 throws then 2 responses
ish

shit. I may have had my IP blacklisted. Constant now
@MichaelMrozek ^
Awww {
"error": {
"code": 4004,
"message": "This IP has exceeded the request-per-day limit."
}
}

Wow. I was just searching through stackapps trying to find the limit; somebody said 10000/day, but I suspect that's with a key
You can always go get a key from stackapps if you want and add it in to the request

Q: How API Keys Work

Kevin MontroseWhat are the API request limits? A single IP address can only make a certain number of API requests per day, depending on the presence of a valid API key. Default API daily limits: Key: 10,000 No Key: 300 These limit are per-site, per-day. So, with a legitimate key, you can make 10,000 req...

ah
@MichaelMrozek am I adding this to my URL?

12:28 AM
Number of questions on SO

@AidenBell Yeah, the api request should end with /stats?key=whatever

ah thought so, cool
Ahhhhh that's better
Thanks @MichaelMrozek

Is there any way we will be able to know which question was 1,000,000?

12:38 AM
@Dexter Yes

I think probably just counting down on the homepage. If you refresh and it's at 1000004, it's the fifth newest one

@MichaelMrozek Yeah...

And probably Jeff's blog post about it will say what it is

I forgot, the homepage value is cached. That will make pinpointing the actual 1m-th question slightly harder

api will be better?

hmmm

since from there you can pinpoint 1m questions and then can't you get the latest n page?

The API seems to be exact, but I don't think there's an API call that gives you the latest question ID and the total question count at once

Could always take the total questions from SEDE and work out the ID

1:09 AM
i haven't dealt much with the questions side of the api

@AidenBell SEDE isn't live though, and doesn't include deleted questions. There's only about 900k questions in there now

Number of questions on SO

@MichaelMrozek - If you do a select from questions without a where is that not accurate?
Just accept mine as 1m
it is a nice one lol

isn't there a main /questions path?

@AidenBell Except for the two things I just said it is. SEDE data isn't live, it's from the monthly data dump, and the data dump doesn't include deleted questions while the total count does

1:10 AM
i suppose i could go look

@MichaelMrozek ah I see

@rchern You're right, I think /questions works
It's got a 'total' field I didn't know about

so as long as you can get that when the total is 1m
the top question should be the most recent
and thus the money question?

Even over 1m is fine, we can count backwards. That was my plan to do manually with the homepage

true, but not as fun (;

1:12 AM
As long as it's less than 1m + (however many questions are in the api result)

you can do pagesize
0 - 100

Ah, cool

Number of questions on SO
999803

while i expect a rush right around 1m, pagesize of up to 100 should be good enough

Yeah, I'd hope so
I just tried to feed the API result to an XML parser in chrome
...it didn't work

1:15 AM
json != xml (:

@rchern Looks like newest. It actually includes posts that haven't made it to the newest tab yet, which is a little confusing
Posts don't show up there for the first minute or so

no
it's giving activity
"creation_date": 1286930274, is listed below "creation_date": 1286917576,

Oh, so it is. Apparently the activity view on the homepage is lagged too

so what we going with?

?sort=newest looks like a winner

sort (optional)
How a collection should be sorted.
one of activity (default), votes, creation, featured, hot, week, or month
so we can pass sort=creation to the api

1:25 AM
Ah, creation, not newest
glares at stackapi.com
Thanks

spreadsheet estimates under 90 minutes

@alexanderpas My guess 'bout an hour ago was 12pm GMT +8
Or in 1.5 h, matching @rchern 's spreadsheet

@rchern does it account for weekly up/downs?

it isn't my spreadsheet

1:29 AM
@rchern Erh... whatever

@alexanderpas, the api includes a questions-per-minute number, it is using that
1
A: Contest to predict date and time that stackoverflow will eclipse 1,000,000 questions

JonGoogle Docs sheet that uses the API to estimate the date: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AsLR0NP8wioVdGRmZUhqd0pudG9faDlYdVhSZ3pQanc&hl=en_GB&authkey=CNzM-IMB

I scripted finding the right one, so hopefully that will work

@rchern Oh wow... Google Spreadsheet can read XML files... can Excel do that?

i think so?

I've never tried; it'd be kind of amusing if it couldn't, since it stores its own worksheets in xml

@YiJiang latest versions can, but only if they created it themself (mickeysoft "standard" ;))

Weird... the Feedbot's answers are very close together
Is that the result of adding two feeds instead of one?

Yeah, there's two running. I started them three minutes apart originally, but apparently they don't stay that way

Seems odd that this room is called "Countdown to 1000000" despite the fact that we're counting up to 1000000. :-)

I would start a meta poll asking for name suggestions, but that didn't go well last time and we don't have three weeks to argue about it :)

@MichaelMrozek I think it must be a sign or something, but I've got an exam starting at the same time as the spreadsheet predicts the 1m question will be asked

Does the API only update once per min?

I assumed it was live, but I don't know

I have 20s wait and it jumps every 3 requests

I think it's the most accurate count we have

2:23 AM
uniformly
it is speeding up too
nope, my mistake, not speeding up
