Looking in gconf-editor: apps/evolution/shell/network_config
I see a couple values with 'port' in their name.
Does that help?
They all have <no value>, though.

Q: How can we ensure that first timers are not given the wrong impression

Richard HollowayI have seen many times people being down voted for doing something wrong. For example posting an answer that really should have been a comment. Or posting an answer in the style of a forum thread post, offering suggestions to a fix, or requesting more information, without actually answering th...

thoughts?

@Jorge: Keep up the good work!

\o/
Oh, I noticed flash and flash-player
consolidating the tags now

12:06 AM
that's good. Really it should be Downvote - COMMENT.
Just downvoting really doesn't do anything - and if your reason has already been commented to the OP then upvote that comment.

@Jorge: I created a tag synonym: ubuntu.stackexchange.com/tags/flash/synonyms
Do you want me to just approve it?
flash-player => flash

I think that makes sense
is the best way to just tell a mod to synonym it or correct the answers themselves?

@GeorgeEdison Approve then do the merge
@JorgeCastro When a synonym is approved it can automatically be merged which will fix all questions within the tags scope
@GeorgeEdison I was able to host:port in the server host field - thanks though!

@MarcoCeppi oh I didn't know that

@Marco: No problem.

12:10 AM
I thought we'd have to go through and manually clean them up
WHEW!

I approved the synonym and merged the q's.
Lemme know if I did something wrong...
...this is the first time I merged anything like this :)

"We have officially stopped processing uploads & will now begin Ubuntu 10.10 Release Candidate ISO build and test for release this Thursday."
wooo!!!!
speaking of modding, do we have to vote again?
or do we go "you guys are awesome just keep them!"

@GeorgeEdison Looks good - you could also go here: ubuntu.stackexchange.com/admin/merge-tags and just have done it that way. The Synonyms are there for the community to recommend fixes
@JorgeCastro From what I understand there will be another poll after the public release. This time the top voted will be selected as moderators (as opposed to having @Robert choosing) IIRC.

how many can there be?

I believe we'll have 3-5
@GeorgeEdison this is why I was asking

Q: Fetch mail from MSN/Windows Live! in Evolution

Marco CeppiI'm trying to sync a Hotmail/Windows Live/MSN email account to Evolution - however I'm unable to do so with both POP and IMAP. If I understand correctly this is because Microsoft blocks all email clients other than Outlook. Is there a way around this?

12:26 AM
is the best I can find @MarcoCeppi
my only other recommendation is to fire up gmail and import that to gmail. :D

@JorgeCastro It's not for me - newly converted older gentleman.

I setup Wubi for him - he's an artist and Windows XP took 5 mintues for iTunes to launch, then he would click "Next" and it would literally take 2 minutes for it to switch.

ouch

after a week and half of Rythembox and Ubuntu he called me and said "WIPE MY DRIVE! I WANT UBUNTU" but only if you can get MSN to sync with the mail program
So it's like ACK! so close. I tried Freepops but that's not working
but I'm getting network timeouts trying to get to the pop server with that forums post :\
getting rough

12:34 AM
The only problem I've ever had with msn/hotmail is they don't let you forward
it's probably some obscure SSL or TLS setting I bet
plus I am telling you in here so you can post your own answer and get "Self Learner". Heh.
it's all about the badges!

haha, I think I've gotten that badge already...
Well went from can not connect to "Failed to get valid greeting"
people seem to post positive about thunderbird. I might try that. I haven't used it since I switched to Evolution back in 8.04

I looked, I didn't see the badge
which is why I posted that forum thread in here

:)
I am a fan of badges and achievements
Going to try IMAP

imap should work
probably imaps

yeah, still no go :\
What are your settings (do you use Live!)?

12:47 AM
I don't
I only read the ones in that forums thread

gotchya. I don't know why you would want a live account when there's google (hell for you - Ubuntu!)

some people have had their email addresses for years
and MSN/hotmail is hard to move off of, they don't let you forward to non MSN accounts!
so you have to not only move to gmail, but set up gmail to imap or pop3 the mails from MSN

`marco@ubuntu:/etc/freepops$ telnet pop3.live.com 995
Trying 65.55.172.253...
Connected to pop3.hot.glbdns.microsoft.com.

everytime I try to connect it gets angry at me

1:03 AM
SNAP!
Got it working.

man, I wish the android SE was as active as ours

@Marco: I answered your question.

@GeorgeEdison Aw you beat me to it

I don't have an Andriod :P

1:15 AM
I have the Android emulator installed.
Works for me.. not very portable, though.
:)

it's ok, the battery life is so horrible you might as well lug your PC in your pocket

It's because of the persistent data streaming. Between mail, maps, GPS, everything. Wears a battery down

yes
but even if you turn all that off it's still pretty bad
I did end up getting that monster battery
so I get about 2 days life now.
plus the stack app on it is nice. Wish the API had write so I could vote from my phone!

So - Looks like this will be an Ubuntu server!

1:25 AM
Here is a more final version of what I'm working on: quickmediasolutions.com/stackmail
This has great potential for our site I think.
We can follow (via RSS or email) any questions with any combinations of tags.

Guess it's time to get super involved with debian packaging. Just when I finally get RPMs down :P

@Marco: I have a great tutorial for you.
One sec.
:)

I've gotten it that I've automated my Production Git repositories to be able to build RPMs automagically. Hopefully I can do that with deb-build

Well, the key command here is debuild.
When run in a properly configured directory, it will produce the package from a folder.
I actually have a shell script for StackApplet that creates: 1. A tar.gz file 2. A DEB package 3. An RPM.
...all from the same directory of source files.

What I like about RPMs is the file transformations are all in the rpm spec file. So I can keep my repository structured (instead of each repository having an /opt/, /usr/, etc) and just build and fly
Are you saying I could potentially do the same with debuild?

1:29 AM
* debuild <---- only one 'b'
:P
This one doesn't use debuild, just dpkg.
It's not the 'official' way to do it, but it works because StackApplet is just a collection of Python scripts.

none of my stuff needs to be compiled

You're good then.
The directory structure needs to be set up a certain way.
Could you use alien to just convert your RPMs?

it's just a collection of scripts and configuration files (like group and sudoers and sshkeys)
That's how I currently do it :)
Build RPM -> convert with alien.

That's what I do for RPM
:)

but, I've got to learn to do it the right way - then I can use the shortcuts

1:33 AM
your group and sudoers are in packages?

K. The 'right way' is to use debuild.

you need puppet my friend
then your recipes would all be the same, and you wouldn't have to care if a server is centos or ubuntu

Oh, and I highly recommend installing pbuilder.
It's basically a fake filesystem that your app gets built in.

@JorgeCastro A friend of mine at Rackspace recommended I use puppet - but he also loves Ruby like no other so I typically ignore him :P

Ruby? Ewwwwwwww.

1:36 AM
yeah, I was eeeewwwww at first too
but it saves you so much time I got over it

@GeorgeEdison He and I are always butting each other because I write my commandline tools in Python, Pearl, and PHP - and he uses Ruby

I use PHP and Python. I've only ever used Perl twice.
I've got the 'camel book'
Perl is kind-of like GZip compression - saves space, but is often unreadable :)

Ruby is just way too abstract for me. I use it from time to time - but man it gets way too much to wrap around

^--- You should star that last quote :)

I suppose I'll have to give Puppet a try

1:38 AM
No, no - my Perl quote!
Star that!

Ok, both it is! :)

haha, Aw - I was going to try to star every quote but that one :P

Meh - too many stars... what were we talking about?

@JorgeCastro wow this looks awesome. I've been using OpenVZ for my virtualization - and been trying to create containers that I could just clone and use. This seems to take that idea and make it shine

StackApplet: Unique Users: 695
According to StackApps.
I'm going to have to break down and add AppIndicators one of these days :)

1:45 AM
totally!

Anyone know SQL? I need to LEFT JOIN 2 tables.
SELECT table2.column, table3.column FROM table1 LEFT JOIN (table2,table3) ON (table1.xxx = table2.id, table1.yyy = table3.id)
It's not working.....
>:(

@GeorgeEdison I didn't know it tracked installs, that's neat

@GeorgeEdison i know SQL
Break your joins up

I fixed it! Thanks!

SELECT table2.column, table3.column FROM table1 LEFT JOIN table2 ON table1.xxx = table2.id LEFT JOIN table3 ON table1.yyy = table3.id
Oh cool - good stuff

1:54 AM
Since RSS is XML, I should be able to parse it with SimpleXML in PHP?
Looks like I can. We'll see how it works.
It worked!
Here is a preview of the email you can expect to receive from StackMail / Stack2RSS:

2:24 AM
Cool!

Here's how it works: people submit feeds that do cool things and other people then subscribe to them.
Then they get an email every day with the results of that feed.

why not just use an RSS Reader?

You can do that too.
The best part? The feeds are entered with special variables that allow flexibility.

It's like RSS to listserv

So you use $site instead of specifying one.
Then the user specifies one when subscribing.
...and you can vote for your favorite feeds.

2:29 AM
cool

Will this help Ubuntu S.E.?
I'm hoping it will.

3:24 AM
There. I added an option to subscribe either by RSS feed or by email.
The email script is just a PHP file that gets run as a cron job every 24 hours.
It basically just fetches the feed and formats it into an email.
I've kind of got the names mixed up now :)
StackMail / Stack2RSS - what have I done!

3:47 AM
StackMobile got mentioned on wapreview.com!

4:41 AM
I updated Stack_Base.php to bring it inline with the PEAR standard.
It's ugly!
I'm using phpcs to check the files.
It complains about equals signs that don't line up!!!

There. All the code now complies.

Q: Why was question 4389 closed?

Javier RiveraThis question. As I understand it, it's just a fun question, quite like the apt-get-from-2020 one. I really can't understand why we accept and upvote one, but not the other. Sure it should be a community wiki and no one should gain reputation, but all jokes should be allowed or no one. Maybe it...

heh
I voted down on both
that kind of junk belongs in the forum imo

aw - I think it's a valid question of Why
I'm writing my answer now
"whereas the 2020 question just barely falls in the scope of this site."
I definitely made sure to put that
0
A: Why was question 4389 closed?

Marco CeppiThe question was closed because it was in the opinion of the content being a "baiting-like" nature. Ultimately the Fun-Friday threads on StackOverflow were started because there really is no "Discussion Board" for StackOverflow. However, as Jorge Castro points out in the original Fun-thread-frida...

I am 11 karma away from 2k!

Is that like reputation on Ubuntu SE?
I've never been on the forums :)

@GeorgeEdison I think he means reputation :P He's at 1,989
Even though the mini-window says 2k :P

Oh I get it.
@Marco: Did you see that I PEAR-ized StackPHP?

I heard - but I certainly have not looked at the code
I don't wish to burn my eyes

6:09 PM
Lol.

6:43 PM
yeah, I mean reputation
odd, I got the most votes on this answer: ubuntu.stackexchange.com/questions/4625/…
which is an easy one
and the actual hard ones like this one I don't get as much: ubuntu.stackexchange.com/questions/4572/…
I wonder if it's the screenshot

7:08 PM
@JorgeCastro sometimes the simplest problems are the most popular

not much activity today. :(

A: How can I change the order of the users in the login screen?

tc14Where is the history stored that this frequency is based on?

Needs to be a comment... what should I do?

9:10 PM
@GeorgeEdison Leave a comment telling them that - then possibly delete the answer (owners can see their deleted answers)
Drinks with work mates! Score!

And.. done.

@GeorgeEdison that was kind of...blunt :P

Yup. But not rude. Just straight and to the point.
How long 'till my PEAR draft becomes a proposal? :P

You might want to slip in an FAQ link - because people with <50 rep can't actually leave comments

Oh yeah......
There.

9:26 PM
:( that apt-2020 thread just won't die!

Aw poor @JorgeCastro
It probably should be closed...

man, +7 votes on my answer

but no one else has voted to close it

but I already hit the rep cap
oh, I forgot I can do that!

I hate hitting the rep cap
@JorgeCastro I think if one or two more people vote to close I'll drop the hammah on it

A: Why was question 4389 closed?

Jorge CastroI don't think those are really good questions, they're probably more appropriate on the Ubuntu forums. (I personally downvoted them both) The FAQ currently says: "This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered!" Maybe we should change that to: "This is not a...

I updated that with a FAQ recommendation
