Hi guys. I'm here because the tavern over at Stack Overflow is kind of a ghost town :/

user163250
No one likes to drink and hangout :/

user163250
I'm trying to garner more interest in Revisiting Optional Explanations for Downvotes (on Questions), so if you think it might be a good idea, or a bad idea, please consider checking it out and voting on it.

@Cupcake you can't force a person to post a useful comment

user163250
@JanDvorak agreed, which is why the comments are optional :/

you can already comment upon commenting

user163250
6:11 AM
@JanDvorak but these comments are anonymous.

why, exactly?

user163250
To protect downvoters from retaliation.

People don't comment why they downvote because it causes the OP to dislike them

don't post rude comments, and you won't be downvoted.

user163250
We elect politicians through anonymous votes for the same reason.

user163250
6:13 AM
Oh wait, sorry, I've getting the issues mixed up.

user163250
I'm proposing optional, anonymous explanations for downvotes.

@JanDvorak That can be surprisingly hard to do, especially if the OP is not very skilled in English

@3ventic if having anonymous comments removes the motivation to comment politely, we shouldn't have anonymous comments.

I agree.

user163250
@3ventic it's not just a matter of being "disliked" though. I personally don't care if someone likes or dislikes me. What I do care about is being able to vote freely and honestly without suffering retaliation, such as harassment.

6:16 AM
@Cupcake then vote freely and honestly, and don't post rude comments

When I downvote and the reason is not obvious, I usually wait for a good while between my comment and my vote.

user163250
@3ventic one of the reasons people don't explain downvotes is because they want to remain anonymous. I'm proposing a solution to allow downvoting while simultaneously explaining downvotes to help the original poster, but in a way that's anonymous.

@3ventic This keeps me anonymous as a voter while still letting me give feedback

user163250
Ok, thanks for your thoughts guys. I've detailed everything in the question on Meta SO, so please consider voting on it.

user163250

Tnx
borked wifi here

Am I missing the point of this comment? Is he really suggesting we start using meta-tags?

Mat
You could read it as a suggestion for a tag hierarchy, where [sony] would be a "parent" tag for all Sony-related tags. I don't think they're suggestion actually putting [sony] in the tags.
(Read meta-tag as "meta information", not as the usual meaning we attribute to it here.)

Myeah @Mat, that might very well be.
Then again typing "sony" into the tag section would already have that effect
If we were to go with a "sony-" solution

Mat
8:18 AM
That works for tagging, doesn't work for search.
> [sony-camera] tag should be tagged [sony]
I understand that as [sony-camera] should have an annotation that it belongs to the [sony] category. Or something.

@Mat searching for [sony*] would achieve that

@Dukeling @femtoRgon @Harry Johnston @RBarryYoung : join me here and let's discuss meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/253539/… . First, read my revised description of the 4/5 use-cases to which is currently applied. I added lots more detail to answer your questions/disagreements.

Mat
Indeed @Bart, but as an example [qt-*] misses some tags (qt4), and [qt*] picks up unrelated stuff (qtip). (Don't get me wrong: I think the [sony-*] thing works ok, and plain text search for Sony works too. Just trying to find advantages for what I think that person is proposing.)

Oh yeah, no worries, just pondering here as well. So thanks for the feedback. :)

You can search for [qt4] or [qt] or [qt-*] for example

8:24 AM
Ehm @smci, will that even ping them? And why not invite them into a specific room?

8:41 AM
@Bart: I don't know, I'm new to Tavern on the Meta. But look at how obnoxious the comment threads on my question became - if you (or others) have any meta-meta-advice on how to further that discussion, please tell...

Mat
@Harry Johnston: are you following this discussion? We're not talking about some obscure crappy VB class, I explicitly said of course that wouldn't deserve a tag. We're talking about the general concept and implementation of a Series, which occurs in at least 9 major programming languages (although the implementations differ). In case you don't know it, Series and DataFrame are two essential concepts in data-processing languages like R and Python/pandas - and that's why the tag should be language-agnostic, at least between R/Python/Matlab. Ok? — smci 3 hours ago
@smci: If you don't want a discussion to derail, don't start the flame.
The first part of that comment is "rude". The tone of the rest is very defensive/aggressive (not sure how to say that).

9:11 AM
whoa... incoming wave of new VLQ Android questions...
I guess I have to take a break from first before I go rage..

@Mat: Reread how he behaved in that thread. He comes to the discussion 24hrs after everyone else, repeatedly reasks questions which had already been already addressed and answered the day before (in detail, with references, and code example). Then he ignores those answers and keeps asking them again. And again, even after I answer him yet again. And then makes some disparaging remarks indicating he hasn't even read the answer. How do you handle such behavior?

You shrug and take another sip of your coffee.

Mat
9:28 AM
@smci: I just looked at the comment thread under the question. I read that he makes a remark, then asks a question, then you pounce on him full-force.
(Then I stop reading because what follows that usually involves people getting defensive and stopping listening to each other.)

@Bart does it need a downvote as well?

Meh, it needs to be closed. That's all I care about.
It's a new user, unaware until now. Nuking him into the ground might not be necessary ..... am I getting soft?

Yes...
A close vote it is...

9:49 AM
@Mat: wrong, you totally misunderstood the sequence of what happened. I started the topic >24 hours earlier by noting specifically that the obscure language-specific reference to .NET in the current (really awful) definition of was totally misguided, and was not explaining the (multiple) use-cases of 'series'.
A fairly low-quality discussion continues - ill-informed, and getting more aggressive, borderline flames from several people. I stay calm and respond politely with fact-based arguments to all this stuff. Generally they ignore the facts and citations, and keep coming back with disparaging remarks. (Look at RBarryYoung's comments. Unbelievable.)
Then a day later, HJ decides to enter the discussion, without reading it, or understanding what it's about, and finally tries to insist to me the complete opposite of what I already stated in graphical detail: "It's not immediately obvious to me that (obscure .NET class) is important enough to have a tag at all, but if it does it should perhaps be more specifically named." That had been my whole point - that the definition of 'series' is precisely not some obscure .NET class.
But I'd already written this for him and others multiple times, so he was now derailing things. Not me. So how do you two (@rene @Bart) deal with a pile-on of people who respond to factual replies with more and more flaming? I was actually soliciting useful comment from people who have basic familiarity with the topic. And don't vote-to-close me to punish me for their behavior. If you can't help the discussion, please stop damaging it.

23 mins ago, by Bart
You shrug and take another sip of your coffee.

Mat
@smci: WRONG!!!!! REREAD MY CHAT MESSAGES!!!! YOU MORNO GERGRZEERER YYYYYYAAAAA!!!
Please keep cool. I didn't analyze that whole post.
You asked "why did this comment thread derail"
I read the comment thread. My opinion, reading that comment thread, is that it got derailed by you.
If that other person missed the point completely, politely point it out or leave it be.

(Bart:) Be assured, the rate of shrugging and coffee-sipping is high. I actually want a useful discussion on the topic I started, and in order to do that the people wrecking that discussion will need to stop wrecking it, or improve their tone, or just stop flaming, or just stop repeating counterfactual remarks until people who do understand the topic join in.

Myeah, good luck with that.

Bart: do you have any constructive response at all, other than sarcasm or votes-to-close? Seems not.

10:02 AM
Now THAT is a cover....

10:20 AM
@Mat: the chronology disproves what you said. Look at the (deleted) flagged comments that were already appearing on Monday. I was getting flamed and insulted by a bunch of people - the more I patiently explained, the more obnoxious they were getting. I had explained that the stupid tag was not 'about obscure VB class' countless times over. I explained it again to HJ.
I'm tired of meta-meta-meta-discussion, and I don't appreciate that you, rene and Bart can't give any constructive advice. Why don't one of you three go shepherd that discussion, and I'll sit here and make sarcastic remarks at people who ask me for advice?

Mat
@smci: look at the (deleted) flagged comments I'm not a mod anywhere, how could I do that exactly?

Bring me some @Mat

Ok you're not a mod, but take my word for it some remarks were getting out of hand. Bye. If you care (later) to give advice about how to handle unruly crowds, please do. I'm asking you guys because you have more experience at these things - I don't.

This guy pretty much took a blog post about gitflow and regurgitated it as a "question" but his "question" is not a question. I've voted to close as "unclear what you're asking" (seeing as there is no damn question there).

Whatever @Bart

10:37 AM
Okay, here goes @smci. Reading through the comments on that question I see one problem. You. You're the one immediately getting confrontational. You're the one whose tone is aggressive, confrontational and potentially demeaning. You are escalating a situation that didn't need to go there at all. If anything is derailing it, it's you. A simply response to genuine comment from genuinely interested users would have sufficed.
That is how I read the post and the comments that are present. You can take the discussion to chat all you want, but with the attitude on display there, a constructive discussion seems unlikely. ... so, there you go. That's my constructive response. Do with it what you want.

@Louis OP deleted...

@rene Yeah, I've just noticed and came back here to see if someone else noticed too. (Volume was off so I did not year the notification from your ping.)

Maybe he did so due to my downvote...

Your downvote was like a revelation from heaven to this OP.

@Louis You calling this room heaven?! We are no such thing!!

@michaelb958 Yeah, I know this room is not heaven. It's more like purgatory.

@Louis cv-ed and left a conment...

@rene Useful comment.

11:23 AM
Say @rene, are you a Unity user?

No, why do you ask?

Because I see more and more edits from you and just bumped into comments from you on a question
But I guess it's the C#/.Net side that gets you there then

Yeah, that might be it. If I do something not useful let me know...

Ha :)

11:38 AM
@Bart: No, you can see from the edit log I'd been patiently answering the same questions for about 24hrs combined with increasing levels of abuse (if you can't see flagged or deleted comments, then you don't know how the conversation went, so it's pointless to speculate on the basis of the subset that's still standing). The more citations I patiently added and revised in the question, the less informed and more obnoxious their questioning got. Check out the deleted comments by RBY.

Once again, we're not moderators, we can't.

^ "Reading through the comments on that question I see one problem." Hello? You understand that there were multiple flames at me from other people, the more non-confrontationally I replied with fact-based posts? So your correct response should be "I can't know who the problem was in the discussion, because I can't see the deleted bits". Not "there is only one problem and it's you". If you don't know the answer to a question, then say "I don't know". Don't start speculating.

@smci can you please tone it down a little bit?

@smci if you don't want our response based on the information we have, stop prodding us for it. Create a dedicated chat room to have your discussion with those involved, and then do whatever you like.

12:13 PM
I do want your response, but speculation is not a response. I thought you were mostly moderators and could see deleted posts, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered asking. It seems pretty self-evident that if there were multiple other posters posting multiple flames at me, and those got deleted, and my posts didn't, that the moderators determined that the other people were behaving really badly, over an entire day. (They were pretty obnoxious).
And I was asking specific constructive comment from any of you how to prevent a question being hijacked like that by an entire group of people - I didn't invite any of them, and most of them don't understand the topic. The answer to that has nothing to do with blaming me. "We don't know, and we don't have any constructive advice".

@smci I'm not sure where you are seeing the 'flames'. The questions and comments seem pretty civil with genuine remarks. If anything, yours come off as abrasive.

(If someone can tell me how to get a couple of moderators' opinion, that would be helpful)

I see no hijacking. I see attempts to clarify

^^ that
As for opinions from a moderator, you might simply have to wait until one comes here.

@Andy: 1) What didn't get deleted seems civil, since there were several other comments by those same posters deleted. Obnoxious and unhelpful ones. 2) HJ's remarks are not constructive, since he repeatedly asked questions that had already been answered, and I pointed it out to him. If you were able to look at the multiple revisions of the question, you can see that. I put tons of information into it.
Goodnight all.

What's red?

@Andy "I would point out that that red line is not closed, so it can't be considered a circle. Since no "circle" was found in the message I rest my trolling case"
A circle is a simple shape of Euclidean geometry that is the set of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the centre. The distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius. It can also be defined as the locus of a point equidistant from a fixed point. A circle is a simple closed curve which divides the plane into two regions: an interior and an exterior. In everyday use, the term "circle" may be used interchangeably to refer to either the boundary of the figure, or to the whole figure including its interior; in strict technical usag...

Okay, while there are people here, let me ask a question :-P
Should this question be made CW?

I've selected "too broad" because this question contains what really amounts to 3 independent questions, but I could easily see other reasons being used.
@AmalMurali I don't know what the reasons that govern CW are... so I'll have to say I don't know.

@AmalMurali why do you think it might need to be CW'd?

With all respect, this seems like one of the biggest 'rep-whoring' posts I've seen in a while - I appreciate the suggestions, and a canonical question is great and all, but based upon the values as I write this, you've garnered +280 rep out of this thus far, with a suggestion to link every other question to the canonical one you created. I would anticipate you're going to get a lot more rep because of that... — Robert H 20 hours ago
I prefer to see answers on them posted as community wikis though since they are pretty much the definition of a CW. — Jeroen Vannevel May 3 at 15:41

Mat
@Amal Murali: play flag roulette! Depending on what mod handles it, it might, or might not, get converted.

Be the tool.

4:45 PM
Heh. "Oh no someone is getting rep from a good question" is not and has never been a reason to convert something to CW.

@AnnaLear I'm not really sure. Should it be CW? I don't think that Q&A pair needs much community efforts to be maintained.

@AmalMurali I agree with you. CW would be inappropriate in this case.

Grace Note on April 22, 2014

Ever seen this diagram?

That’s the visual elevator pitch for Stack Exchange. We were the little dot in the middle, a potent mix of useful traits from other tools, a wiry mutt full of hybrid vigor. The purpose of this blend was to allow and encourage the construction of a library of solutions, by providing communities with the tools they needed to share their experiences and challenges with others who might struggle with the same issues.

The diagram illustrated where we stole drew inspiration for the design of those tools, and their influence occasionally shows up in the results. Sometimes, …

@AnnaLear The question got -4 and the answer got -3. I'm not sure why though. Probably these are people who dislike the post not being CW.

... or they dislike something else about it?
People vote for odd interesting reasons.

4:50 PM
Hmm, I don't know. Maybe they dislike the question as a whole. One of the comments indicated that:
> Actually, I don't understand why post new thread about this issue. It was discussed many times ago. It has many answers (so they can be used as canonical anwers as well).

"Oh no, someone is getting rep from a post" is not and has never been a reason to convert something to community wiki. (cc @RobertH) If it turns out that the canonical question and the answer are being continuously maintained by multiple people, we can think about flipping the switch. In the meantime, calling people rep whores for posting what is objectively good, well-intentioned, and well-written content is, at best, counterproductive. — Anna Lear ♦ 7 secs ago

This amazes me every time: Oh, yeah, forgot that I also had 3 deleted questions... Come on!

9:43 PM
All brown posts are currently in read-only mode.

Hello --time-travelling doge

@rene "I deleted it. They will never know!! ... What, you can still see them?"
@jadarnel27 I'm looking forward to the day where the status message will read "All posts are currently brown".

@rene Yep, most annoying thing ever. It's like, how do you forget about that time you got downvote-smashed into oblivion and depression?

Alcohol @michaelb958

@Bart Might work... The one time it happened to me, I dealt with it by taking a few days off, then treating it as My Greatest Failure™ afterwards.

@Bart I too look forward to that day =)

wow, OK i did a misstake due to my kid who played around in my knee and i didn't even have time to correct it before all the flames! — PeterK 15 mins ago
That almost makes me want to upvote

Isn't this what a personal blog is for? Or a community Wiki? If newcomer pulled this stunt he'd be drubbed off SO in a heartbeat. — Mark0978 40 mins ago
lolwut

FOR SHAME @AmalMurali

not sure what that's supposed to mean lol :D

Oh sure. Keep posting more upvoted and welcomed self-answered contributions like that and you'll see what happens .... hmm, my threats lack something ...

The downvotes make me sad :-(

What I do in such a case to lift my spirits is creating a whole bunch of sockpuppets and pretending to be an Indian hacker team.

lol

I stopped when I realized they might actually comply and make me a moderator. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Seems like an easy way to get reputation points, this is called rep-whoring on Meta, but taken to a whole new level in this case. In the last 3 days, this one question has racked up 287 rep points (provided I didn't miss some). Reference question means nothing on SO. It's a made up term. — Mark0978 35 secs ago
sigh
I think it just needs to be CW. Or else people wouldn't stop complaining.

And then you visit the profile and you see it's a 50 year old guy concerned about rep whoring .... wisdom comes with age.

@AmalMurali tbh, reference questions should be CW

@3ventic What about this?

I don't see how that's special

10:44 PM
But bear in mind that I don't use SO
Well, I read it when googling for answers, but I don't usually contribute to it.

@3ventic how do you figure?

@AmalMurali I'd just get the off-topic comments nuked at some point if I were you

To me, they are (or should be) a collective effort by the community

That's all. If you get rep for a valuable contribution .... I don't really see the issue @AmalMurali

@Bart Erm, how?

10:47 PM
@3ventic If that's the case, sure. however, preemptive conversion doesn't do anybody any good.

A flag @AmalMurali

You're right.
I need to go though, 2 AM means it's time to sleep.

I'm already flagging those comments. FLAG ALL THE THINGS

@3ventic 4:17 AM means what? :-D

@AmalMurali You already slept and have an early wake up, hopefully.

10:48 PM
I'll take care of the comments on that post in a moment.

(And this comes from someone who went to bed at 5 AM the last 3 days in a row and woke up at like 7 or 8..)
But tonight I'm going to get proper sleep.

Thanks @AnnaLear

Honestly, I don't care about the rep that much. If I simply wanted to earn rep, I could just post answers like "Use backticks bro" and get 10+ upvotes in a sec.

heh, just 20 secs

@AmalMurali ha, I should totally try that

10:51 PM
Yeah. For example, take a look at this search query.

@Braiam Flag... all the things?

Anyway, I've caused enough harm to the network today. Time for some sleep. Cya

Moderator note: if you have a problem with this question, think it should be "community wiki", and so on, please visit meta. Note, however, that self-answering questions and the resulting reputation gain (assuming the quality is there) is a feature, and removing reputation gain is not and has never been the goal of community wiki. — Anna Lear ♦ 6 secs ago

@Bart Night!

OMG... Please don't redesign the profile page... stackoverflow.com/users/reloaded/34397/slaks it looks bad ... keep it like it is , no changes please

10:53 PM
@Stilly.stack Post your feedback on meta :)

@Stilly.stack But... it looks so nice!

meh, we have selfanswered in AU/UL that got more reputation that silly SO Q's

The way I see it... the second I get jealous of someone else's rep gain, it's a sign that maybe I should spend more time asking/answering questions instead of worrying about what others are doing.

Rep inflation, fraud, etc. can definitely be a problem. Rep "whoring"? Meh. Oh noes, someone used the site as intended and got reputation for it. Stop the presses!

arg! Y U SO INTELLIGENT @Anna?

Three stars in 40 seconds. Not bad.

10:55 PM
everything!

@Braiam Don't get used to it. ;)

i hope this is an acceptable answer
