@rchern I saw that, LOL

Take THAT @badp!!!!

ROFL

my vote didn't make it. you deleted it between my page load and vote

That was officially the highlight of my day, lol

that's an awesome notification

On no, I lost the tab with the revision history!

I wonder if this would work for @badp's forum parser...

that was the best part :-)

@TheUnhandledException I want an upvote
I would prefer on Cooking, but MSO is fine
:P

@TheUnhandledException hehe

Can't upvote you much more on cooking, or I'll risk setting off the fraud alert. I upvoted a few of your answers this weekend :-)
I think I did anyway...

Was a great answer :-)
hence the "+1 for crispy cookies! – Josh Sep 10 at 23:02 " :-)

12:07 AM
ah yes

@rchern Uh oh, I'd better get out of here before they find me! :-)
@hobodave (My name changes during Friday's madness in here... :-)

hm
I could spin up 40 VMs on rackspace and do a wget of my referral link
voila, badge
all for $1.20
mwahahaha

DO IT @HOBODAVE!

@TheUnhandledException, maybe if you report @hobodave to the team they'll let you off easy (;

I'm pretty sure rackspace would be less than pleased at 40 vms being run for less than 1 hr before being destroyed

12:11 AM
@rchern LOL
OK I'm really leaving this time :-)
later everyone

drags TUE back, just for kicks

12:40 AM
haha, listening to music on my computer and Code Monkey just came on.

1:02 AM
if anyone is around.. can you tell me how terribly this runs on your browser?.. carson.com
The project started with 5 categories, and I wound up having each category load with a separate ajax call.. it was very snappy. Then the category count ballooned to over 200.

Snappy, but sure looks busy with a few categories (depending on zoom)

yeah.. there's almost 700 markers if everything is turned on
didn't take too long to load, @LanceRoberts ?

the first zoom out took a while to load, nothing else was slow

1:18 AM
First zoom takes a while, everything else is fine.

cool.. thanks for checking it out.
It was a lot of effort, getting everything to work just right with the maps api v3.

2:06 AM
I clearly missed some good times earlier

@JoePhillips Hi Joe

howdy!

How's it goin?

im really loving this programmers.stackexchange.com site haha
that is where all the cool questions happen

It reminds me of Meta.SO
except, you don't actually have to know anything to get rep
not even about waffles

it is a fun distraction... i got to rail against java on there today (i look for any excuse)

2:28 AM
yeah, that worked out well for me too

1
A: Which language do you think would deserve a better/worse position on TIOBE index?

FoscoI don't agree with Java being #1. It's slow (still, despite all the propaganda that says otherwise.) It uses a virtual machine, rather than running natively on the intended target. I can't come up with a single example Java application that I like. The silly naming conventions (beans, jars, wars...

Peter AjtaiI propose Zombie Unicorn rep. The combined rep earned on all failed Stack Exchanges you've participated in. Obviously you would have Zombie Unicorn badges too.

@Shog9 To be fair, there was a death proposal, it just got closed: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/17024/visual-basic

I think he might be working for....whatever group hates unicorns

hum. That question.
The dedicated SO spammers sicken me. I don't usually talk about SO users that way, but this stuff - scanning for semi-relevant topics just to post links back to their products - it's just cold. I'd actually rather see Viagra spam.

12
A: Is This User a Spammer?

AarobotI think it's pretty clear that he's a spammer. 40 answers and every single one of them has that link. (OK, I just did a spot check, but I was 10 for 10). Even if he was just throwing this link into every single WebDAV question, I would still consider him a spammer; the fact that he's also spam...

I don't get how what you said was related...but ok.

@PopularDemand HA!

I pointed y'all to the wrong question. You wanted me to leave it? (;

@rchern Oh, I might have missed your initial post. Chat hasn't been working too well since I switched back to FF from Chrome.
Man, was it ever smooth in Chrome.

so use it in Chrome
you can have two browsers...
(unless both of them are IE)

@Shog9 Not a fan of the silent updates.

3:06 AM
why did you switch back to FF? oof.

anyone try IE9 today?

I didn't. IE is a bitch to install at the best of times, nevermind a beta. Balpha was talking a bout it though

rchern, I hate Chrome btw

@Shog9 I actually have IE 3, 6, 7 and.. one more at work. Not to mention FF 2, FF 3, Chrome 5 and Opera 10.

@Joe, I always knew there was something weird about you. :p

3:07 AM
@JoePhillips That's what I was going to do!
Thanks @JoePhillips!

@PopularDemand Glad I could be so helpful! mwahahaha

@PopularDemand lemme guess: dodgy registry + filesystem hacks?

Guess I'd better log off.

@rchern Actually I like chrome but I really dislike the lack of status bar because I have no where to put my plugin icons. I want firebug back!

@Shog9 Yeah, like I'm going to muck around with that at work. MultipleIEs.

3:08 AM
I just keep a separate FF profile for debugging

The rest are happy to play in the same sandbox.

chrome has dev tools...

They're getting better, too
still rotten UI though

Any other suggestions for backing up a whole system? I was only half-serious at first, but hey, who better to ask?

Same thing in IE - it's like they designed the UI to run full-screen, then shoved it into a little footerbar without any real changes
@PopularDemand it all depends on how you plan to restore it

3:10 AM
@rchern but they suck

@Shog9 I'm flexible.

dd / PING / etc. all work great if you just want to blast an image back onto another partition
if you need to pick out individual files, then XCOPY is pretty damn simple

I just need the data, I'm going to attempt to wipe Vista out and get 7 running.

matter of opinion i guess. just use a firebug lite bookmarklet then hehe

Hmm, but if 7 doesn't work, it'd be nice to be able to get Vista back.
Hmm.

3:11 AM
you could also try the built-in Windows backup. No guarantees though

@PopularDemand Acronis True Image is my homeboy

I wonder if this would be on-topic at Programmers SE. But it's the SO overflow, not the SU overflow.

Piotr DobrogostDo you know advanced backup software for Windows?

No. But, I do know the muffin man...

6:57 AM
@PopularDemand, I just had a not-so-good experience with the built-in windows backup. I discovered that because Outlook was open, it wasn't backing up the Outlook.pst, just some useless tmp file. Apparently you can set it up for shadow copy or something like that, but it wasn't abundantly obvious to me at the time how to do it (otherwise I would have)...

Q: Does fast typing influence fast programming?

Many young programmers think that their bottleneck is typing speed. After some experience one realizes that it is not the case, you have to think much more than type. At some point my room-mate forced me to turn of the light (he sleeps during the night). I had to learn to touch type and I exper...

Hey everyone!

Looks like a busy day ahead..
Hey Josh

2:06 PM
Hey there @Fosco
Yeah, busy day for me... I'm headed AFK, be back soon!

hi/bye hehe
Daily StackFlair question, heh. If there's an error generating StackFlair (api down, invalid id, invalid options), what would you expect to be returned? And does that change for html vs image format?

Every time I see the Food and Cooking chat room, I have the urge to invite everyone there into a new room called "The Fire."

oO

@rchern could it return a box that says Invalid StackFlair Request, in both html and image formats?

2:22 PM
Yup. (which is what seems best to me)

2:32 PM
@rchern feature-request.. to update at 12 hours or at midnight. mine's pretty stale right now.

Public service announcement: Jeff Atwood has earned the silver "reputation" badge on Meta. Please do not leave your bags unattended in the terminal. Have a nice day.

@Fosco, 12 hours seems reasonable enough.
status-completed

@PopularDemand That was random

@rchern thanks

3:14 PM
FYI, I'm back, but I'll be lurking today; I have a lot of work to get done. I will likely not see anyting you say unless you @me.

@me: gotcha.

LOL
I'm also using the "About Me" on chat for status updates, like XMPP/AIM statuses
will be posting a meta suggestion about that topic later

@TheUnhandledException It took me two tries to find the "edit 'About Me'" link just now. Yes, after you mentioned that the feature existed in the first place.

@PopularDemand LOL. It's well hidden :-)
Since I can't put links or markdown of any sort in there, I figured status updates fit nicely in that field!

@TheUnhandledException I bet you use twitter, and facebook statuses, and Google Wavy Buzzing, too.

3:23 PM
@PopularDemand no, used to, and no :-)
Actually I used to be able to set my XMPP status and my FB status followed. But I like having one status to rule them all

hi guys
I want to buy myself an Android phone but it seems I can't without some sort of provider plan. I live in bolivia i don't want any of that crap
any help?

@SergioTapia You mioght want to ask in the new SuperUser chat

@SergioTapia Get one used?
Whoa, SU chat is open for business?

Just opened today @Popular

Ha, they copied Regulator HQ!

Well, I consider today a success. Good night.

@TheUnhandledException You're correct, Ivo's the owner of the room.

what percentage of registered users on SO do you think have more than 500 reputation?

@NullUserException There's a meta question for that somewhere...
I think it was like 75%?

@The Nope. Lower
@TheUnhandledException

Not @The. @Me, as @PopularDemand said ;-)
(j/k)

@NullUserException 15%

3:43 PM
Oh NetBeans, why must you be so slooooow sometimes?

@TheUnhandledException only sometimes? That's Java for you :)

LOL
It doesn't seem to like my 7500 line JS file :-)

did somebody mention something Java related???

Java wakes @Fosco up :-)
How are you @Piers?

@TheUnhandledException good thanks Josh
@TheUnhandledException how many more days before you can put your name back to something sensible?

3:54 PM
@PiersMyers LOL. Um, probably 23 or so?

@TheUnhandledException 7500 lines! Sounds like you need to do some serious refactoring

Although I can't say for sure that my next name will be more sensible ;-)
@PiersMyers Nothing too serious, this file really should be 2 or 3. There's a whole chunk which clearly belongs in a separate file

4:24 PM
I have a question and I'm not sure where would be best to ask it... I'm looking for some open-source software for a particular function (a ticketing system).

@TheUnhandledException Google Code Search?

@rchern WebApps is for existing, known web apps like gmail, right? Not for open source products which could be used as a web app?
@PopularDemand Thanks, I'll try that first. SourceForge has turned up nothing
The question's not really about programming, so SO I think is out, but I think it will be closed on SU :-)

@TheUnhandledException Agreed. I think they decided [webapp-rec] was legal, but I haven't been active on Web Apps.

Thought so
FOund a similar one on SU which was migrated to SF

Q: What is the best service for Incident Report Tracking / Help Desk...

RSolbergI'm thinking of a system that can be used to report problems to an IT group. When problems are added, the IT group is notified. A very easy to look at list. Man. Freakin' outliers, man.

5:07 PM
Any dynamic SQLers here?

5:17 PM
seen this yet: youtube.com/watch?v=uccjrp5NRYE&feature=player_embedded ? The conversation at the very top may have gone like this: "Mate, you got the screwdrivers?", "No, I've got the spanners", "I'VE got the spanners, it's your turn for screwdrivers today", "Ah crap, back in 10"

@TheUnhandledException, i believe we've got a question on that just from looking at the title

5:56 PM
@PopularDemand What's your Q about dynamic sql?

0
Q: How to store TSQL query results for later display

Lord TorgamusI've never used TSQL before, but I decided I wanted to poke around in the SO data dump anyways. So this is probably a rookie question. I did try to search for an answer, but I don't know the technical term for what I'm trying to do, and search is only so good if you don't have the right keywords....

@PopularDemand I am not convinced that dynamic SQL would be the best approach... I do like GrayWizardX's answer.

why do you want a single row with multiple columns rather than 2 columns, multiple rows?
you're proposing 1100 columns...

Ah yes I forgot Pops is Lord Torgamus..

@rchern I don't, that diagram is not meant to be taken literally. I thought it would make things easier to understand, but it's only confusing people.

6:05 PM
@rchern Right. I would go with the easy approach of just grouping on score, summing count. It's simple and fast, gives you all the data you need.

I'm editing now.

@PopularDemand Are we missing something? Does graywizardx's answer not satisfy your requirement? You know dynamic sql is usually frowned upon right? (I like it just fine, when it makes sense)

it isn't confusing per se, but you had a reason to want a single row as that's how you posted it. trying to understand. dynamic sql is generally not the best way
Hmm, let me rephrase that.
sql works best when your columns are static and your rows are dynamic.

@rchern I have re-updated my post.

imagine trying to paged results on that
(k, reading)

6:09 PM
It gave me the opportunity to include a score that had zero matching posts, anyawys.

ah.. well that can be done too..

@Fosco It's a good answer, but it doesn't display rows that have count of 0. At this point I'm not trying to come up with the most efficient answer, I just want to find out more about how this thing works.

ok, if it's for informational purposes, do you want me to answer with a dynamic sql version?
I would declare a few variables, set the min score, the max score, make a temporary table... dynamically iterate through inserting a record with the count for that score, and then at the end display the temp table.

@Fosco Actually the fact that I could make a temp table was enlightening; I saw that sort of thing in tutorials but didn't realize that SEDE would allow it. But since then I've gotten distracted by, you know, "work."
But yeah, go ahead and throw something up there, if you have the time and interest, I'd appreciate it.

ok, working on it now.

6:17 PM
what version of sql is sede?
sql server 2005+ has a pivot table command doesn't it?

evening

heh.. just got a 'Something is wrong with the server!' message on SEDE

@rchern Without checking out the source, this is probably the best you can do:
> the database is hosted on SQL Azure. SQL Azure supports most of the TSQL commands, except that you have no tempdb access or cross database access which means no per-connection temp tables

@PopularDemand you're welcome

@balpha Hm? What's that? I certainly didn't say anything to you.

6:22 PM
not here, you didn't

(;

@PopularDemand without dynamic sql per se (I dont consider the while loop to be dynamic sql), I added an answer that expands on your original code to include rows for scores with no posts.

Ha, -- isn't recognized as a valid comment syntax.

i have to do some actual work, but hopefully afterwards I'll make a pure dynamic sql version that does a pivot.

6:36 PM
@Fosco What's there now looks nice. Good touch not expanding the zeroes above 1700.

7:03 PM
he finally lost it:

@rchern Sorry, what's this?
1 hour ago, by rchern
@TheUnhandledException, i believe we've got a question on that just from looking at the title
@balpha HAHAHA, wtf???

@TheUnhandledException She's saying that she looked at the title and remembered that someone already asked that on Web Apps.
No fancy "going to the website and looking it up" required!

@TheUnhandledException, you were asking about WA and linked a question related to Help Desk stuff
and I was lazy and didn't go find a link for you >_>

OH, Ok.
I found good links on ServerFault

hey there @Greg!

7:34 PM
moo?

yikes!

@TheUnhandledException, Zimbra looks cool, but I don't think it'll help. :P The issue is that the people involved each have their own email, it isn't a common solution. Some use 1and1's email, some use gmail, some use desktop clients, some use their isp's web mail, etc.

7:41 PM
@rchern Ahhhh, sorry for misunderstanding :-)
Hence the "in general" part of your question... DUUUURRRHHHH :-)

I could probably make the question clearer..

I guess I just have Zimbra on the brain since I'm trying to sell our CEO on it :-)

haha

(literally talked to him about it during lunch :-)
IMing him a demo as we speak
Hmmm, I'm thinking that doing this "in general" might be near impossible. You'd have to somehow put, well, I guess base64-encoded encrypted data into the webmail client...
but even then it wouldn't be S/MIME. The webmail client would have to specifically support S/MIME.
Sorry my new answer is a lot less optimistic :-/

@Shog9 ping
