Pretty funny, if I do say so myself :)

@GeorgeEdison I agree, it's great :-)
how goes?

@Josh on a somewhat similar note - got a call Friday early morning from my Dad saying that his brother expired. Couple hours later, I hear that the client I'm working with will be acquired. And the project I've been working on for the past 2 hours is likely to be scrapped :/

@Sathya Sorry to hear that on all 3 counts :-(

@Josh Fine.

Seems like I will be heading back to India soon

12:03 AM
@Sathya Which part?

@Josh South. I'm from South India. Mangalore, to be specific. Working in Chennai though

@Sathya Nice. I have a friend who lives outside Bangalore
I'd like to visit India some day

@Josh Bangalore is about 8 hours drive from my town
@Josh you should come

@Sathya Wow, closer than I would have thought!

@Josh hehe :)

12:08 AM
I'm a fan of Indian food, it would be great to try some real food, not the Americanized version I can find around here :-)

@Josh Indian food here is like burgers and chinese in India
too localized
(hey that's a close reason! )

haha
Alright, who upvoted Bill Gates' answer? stackoverflow.com/questions/1547169/…

not me

A: What is the status of MSN openID interation?

Bill GatesWe have decided not to go ahead with this after some large security concerns popped up. Our team was unable to come up with a reasonable way to integrate OpenID with our services, and therefore we decided not to proceed with this.

Beat me to it @Sathya!

Bill GatesWe most certainly do. And if anyone can say that, I can.

ought to room and add a feed of "Bill Gates"'s answers :)

LOL
@Sathya wtf who downvoted you?
Silly people on meta :-)

Probably not enough free hand circles on the pic ;)

@Sathya of course, my mistake. Silly me :-)

Hey there @rchern

Heh, he has 41 rep now. People probably can't tell he's likely a fake, lol

@Josh the answers are LOLtastic :)

@Shog9 I'm here now. Letdown REVERSED

Are you getting reversed and increased confused again? (;

Speaking of which... I need your votes

don't do either

well, no wonder you're so unfocused! ;-p

@Shog9 I skimmed through the nominations and didn't see your name. Then I read them and immediately identified which one you were

Being a moderator on that site sounds like it would be miserable. It pretty much exists to escape the shackles of SO

yup
Frankly, I don't think it should even bother with moderators

I would volunteer, but I think the people most likely to frequent that site probably know me from SO and have voodoo dolls of me they stab with pins as they cast reopen votes

3:40 AM

what site?

I'm suddenly unable to vote up or flag comments on meta. Anybody know what that's about?
Well, I posted it on meta, so somebody let me know if it's just my computer being broken

Q: Unable to upvote or flag comments on meta

Michael MrozekI'm suddenly unable to upvote or flag comments on meta; it still works normally on SO, so it seems to be something between 2010.9.8.1 and 2010.9.8.4. I don't even see the padding on the left where the buttons normally appear on hover. Is this intentional, a bug, or some local problem only I'm hav...

Yup. 7Basic.

@GeorgeEdison That name worries me, but otherwise cool

comment voting is back sorry for the glitch in the matrix

you should flag the "real Jeff Atwood" :)

sadly, he is no more; absorbed back into the ether from which he came

lol
man LINQ to SQL is slow ... I just spent all morning hand coding some performance critical code ... great for easy stuff ... but it bites you hard at the end
give me SQL or give me death

mmm, yeah... As soon as you group by anything, you're into multiple queries & network latency hell

I have issues with SQL abstractions. Give me raw SQL any day.

that's the way it always is. do you want it implemented quickly or do you want it to perform?
You can not have both!!

I have issues with 4GL abstractions. Give me raw procedural APIs any day.
@rchern have you tried jQuery?

5:13 AM
Yes. I use jQuery for addition. We're not talking about jQuery right now though! (;

I can't remember what feature it was, but there was something in chat where L2S wanted to do 25k reads. Cranking it manually with some clever TSQL got it to <200 reads. Even then, though; still useful for filling the objects etc.

I reckon a big reason linq-to-sql gained so much success was lack on the LIMIT and OFFSET sql commands in TSQL

yeah, TSQL does suck

ROW_NUMBER...

@Marc, slight difference there.

5:14 AM
also sucks

shoot me ... select * from (
select top 10 ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Id asc) as [Rank] , * from Posts
) as X
where [Rank] between 2 and 9
this is just plain ugly

any time I must write a nested query, I consider SQL to have failed me.

@Shog9 agreed.

It amuses me that TOP @variable (instead of TOP literal) was a late addition...

Top @variable is really slow, though. I can't use it one on of my projects.

5:16 AM
Let's just all use a sql designer so that we never have to look at actual sql code. I'm sure it'll be just as efficient...

CSV files and nested loops

well hand coded old-school SQL commands performed about twice faster than the exact same SQL executed via ExecuteQuery<T> ... for 31 operations
hence the can-not-vote on comment issue, I rewrote the way retrieve them

CSV... now there's a borked file format.

only if your data contains commas...

you mean like having city, state, and zip in the same field in a csv? and what do you generally separate city and state with?

5:20 AM
also ... this page stackoverflow.com/badges/260/announcer is taking an extra second and a half cause stupid LINQ is reusing the query plan for a badge that has 8000 assignments ... the annoying thing is that I can not tell it not to reuse the plan

A: Convection microwaves

rchernMicrowave: A microwave heats water and molecules in the food by using microwave radiation. It will heat food efficiently and quickly, but does not brown or bake like a conventional oven. Oven: Fueled by gas or electricity and heats from the bottom (baking, roasting) or from the top (broiling)...

or periods, depending on your locale. 'cos sure just feel free to have a comma separated file that isn't actually separated by commas. That'll be fine.

never realized there was such a thing

hey, that's my picture! (;

sadly, Excel imports and exports easily to CSV, so it's a handy format for that reason alone

5:24 AM
I've never seen a period-seperated-value file. Craziness.

tab-separated is reasonably common
(at least, around these parts... damn Excel again)

Yet it exists. French version of Excel does it by default. I generally use tabs.

I actually have a meeting tomorrow to talk about another issue from the same vendor I mentioned ^^^. They want me to join 2 sets of data. Without a primary key. With duplicates that exist. Even doing combinations to try and match up the data won't work.

Or protobufs if I want to do it right ;p
but training users to hand-edit a dense binary file with variant-length representations takes a while...

sigh... again, .NET lets me down
IExpando looks like such a handy interface, and there's built-in support for marshaling from IDispatchEx
...but no going back the other direction

Well, hello.

Hey, wandering unicorn.
aww, both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs got their SO accounts deleted.

Yeah, sucks to be them.

@MarcGravell I think it's semi-colon separated. In any case whatever your separator is you've got a problem if there are carriage returns in your fields...

They should have used XML!!

jQuery
'nuff said

7:35 AM
They should have used Core Data!!

jQuery to parse the XML @LasseVKarlsen
"HOW DO I PARSE XML IN JQUERY????"

jQuery to parse jQuery

CSV is ok as long as you limit yourself to a known subset, I guess.
but you could say the same thing about parsing html with regex :)

(Addressed to me, which is why I'm asking for a second opinion)

Are there situations where a question is off-topic in (say) SO, would belong to (say) SU and yet you'd rather have the question and not have it migrated?

is meta down? this message posted so it is.

Not for me, loads in an instant. (It's not my cache.)

not loading for me

@Sekhat Now it must be...

@badp now it is loading

Just saw this:
What I wonder is, with 100+ sites, how would you even know where it belongs?
(Looks like onebox doesn't like the new urls)

9:33 AM
@Benjol You can search by topic
if the question is about use of english, search "English" and click on the suggestion for TypoOverflow

ok, I didn't spot the search by topic, that would make things easier.
Maybe there needs to be a 'dustbin' SE site, where orphaned questions go :)

Actually the topvoted domain name for the English proposal is grammar power
with a whopping 3

Or help with ideas...

the hot dog stand tribute has changed into a scraping page.
a scraping page without the hot dog stand theme.

I'm wondering how long a grace period I should give an asker to edit his excessively vague or poorly-written question before I vote to close it.

Just edit it yourself...

What if I have no idea what the OP wants?

then maybe don't edit it

link?

Not dealing with one right now, but I've had to think about this for plenty of questions.
Where there's absolutely no response from the OP — even after a few hours — in terms of what code he's tried using, or details about whatever problem he's having getting things to work, etc. Like, just a generic error message or "it doesn't work help me plz" kind of thing.

10:57 AM
whenever I run into that, I think about all the questions I didn't see that are just as bad, and don't worry too much about it :)

@GregHewgill what do you mean?

@BoltClock I don't see why the question requires action then

Hmm, alright then.

comment asking for clarification then just let it drop, it's the asker's interest to bump it up to the top.
If he doesn't care why should we :)

Yeah, good point about caring.

didn't SO introduce something so you could stll see when a question was deleted?
just clicked a link and ended on the 404 page

@wds Sure
Get 10k rep

Or dig into your browser cache.

LOL, posted a question for my boss, got 3 answers in 20 minutes. He was impressed...

Morning all

He is not impressed until he gives you a raise.

12:18 PM
20 mins are even too many
Hmm, my SO rep got recalculated.

How much did you lose?

roughly 70?

@badp ah I figured it always showed something now, like "this question was deleted...", must have been just for merges or moves

Yeah, migrations
Now I have 2,390 on SO, 2,366 on MSO and 2,265 on Gaming. That feels weird.

@badp, wow, do you want us to go and do some strategic downvoting to even those up? :)

12:25 PM
There are some SE public betas that I'm a bit interested in but never did participate actively in :/

I'd have to downvote something on Gaming first :D

I'm not even that active on MSO either — not even 200 rep :P

2 hours later…
2:00 PM
Woo hoo, chat is back! I almost went into withdrawl =0

@badp Wow.

@PopularDemand Now it's 2,390 and 2,390 on MSO and SO.
It's been screenshotted so feel free to ruin it either way :D

@badp Are you slowly and uncontrollably sliding towards a mirror-universe version of you?

Yeah, I kind of feel dizzily meta.

@badp Oh, yeah? I'll show you! For each of your SO posts I upvote, I will upvote one of your MSO posts! And vice versa!
You shall never escape!

2:13 PM
I'll just unaccept an answer on either side.

@badp Curse you and your "odd numbers"!

I am two silver and one bronze badge short on MSO

I've given mine already.
Besides, Jon's hit the cap already today. Several times over.

I could use some advice from a VMware/linux expert... anyone around, if anyone's around and would like to assist, find me in the ServerFault room

@Josh unix.se? ubuntu.se? :P

@badp It's not about the cap.

@badp Specifically CentOS, VMware and hardware upgrades
Most specifically hardware upgrade

Can't help, sorry

Downtime killed chat.

2:25 PM
The IRC guys were quite friendly though, they immediately submitted me to bash.org for example.
(I don't think it'll get approved though.)

They've barely approved any new content in the past three years.

The latest one is quite good, however.

@badp ROFLMFAO

@PopularDemand Yeah, "ModApp" is down

quick question, how do I insert a newsgroup link "news://news.blah..." to a SO Answer so that it is highlighted as a link? It doesn't seem to work unless it starts with 'http' ?

2:30 PM
@PiersMyers make a tinyurl
tinyURLs allow redirecting to non http:// links.
(I've used it in the past to give mumble:// links in wiki's.)

Yay chat is back

@badp cool, that worked, thanks

@Fosco It's been minutes! Why weren't you obsessively refreshing the bug report and using the comment thread there as a pseudo-chat?

yeah, what did happen to chat? Did the cleaners unplug it so they could vacuum?

@PopularDemand hehe.. I was actually working... crazy I know

2:36 PM
That's illegal!

@PiersMyers Per Marc, the unicorns and pixies got into a race war of some kind.

Who won?

Welcome back @Fosco! how are you today?

A: Chat down with no custom error page.

Marc GravellOK; we're back up. Still investigating what happened, but the unicorns and the pixies have stopped fighting for long enough to serve requests instead.

@Josh pretty good thanks.. you?
Having lunch in a little while with a girl I worked with at my last job.. not telling my girlfriend..
It's just lunch.. does that make me a bad person? :)

2:39 PM
@Fosco Not too bad... recovering from a rough night last night, about to have a meeting with my senior management team regarding server upgrade plans... looking for advice in the Server fault room

@Josh yikes.. sorry to hear.. hope everything works out =\

Thanks @Fosco :-)

@Fosco I really want to say this is off-topic for a tavern.

LOL

We should be, I dunno, throwing darts and telling hilarious -- but work-safe -- jokes.

2:42 PM
@PopularDemand You're off-topic, this whole damn chat room is off-topic!

@Fosco I thought that was the whole point of this place

@PiersMyers Me too, me too..

@Josh just make sure your new servers are spider proof

@PiersMyers LOL. I'll try to! I'm thinking 32-cores of 2.0GHz goodness running a cluster of webserver virtual machines... but maybe I'm a crazyman :-)

@Fosco Please upvote it then, even if it's declined they may look at the issue again someday.
The biggest problem is the speed of the questions. I lose the chance to look at a lot of questions because they move so fast.

Whew, got meeting with team pushed back until after lunch, allowing me time to compose a ServerFault question proper rather than just mussing about in chat :-)

@LanceRoberts done.. even through a downvote in on that answer, lol.
