"[Microsoft] on Monday unveiled the Surface, a PC tablet that runs a yet-to-be released version of its Windows operating system called Windows 8. "

Surface?

It's a big ass table It's a tablet?

12:50 AM
Hmm, they're reusing the surface brand name for tablets
Oh, the cover can be turned around and used as a keyboard

Yeah, toast!

1:44 AM
Gotta admit, I've been waiting 10 years for a decent Windows tablet w/ keyboard and stylus. And now, just when it's looking like they might finally build one, I realize the only Windows apps I still use are... Chrome, Firefox, and The GIMP.

@Shog9 Those aren't Windows app

@TimYiJiang So you see my problem then

This is the kind of thing I find StackOverflow helps mitigate.
Diablo 3 would be fun on a tablet. TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP AUUGH TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP.

Oh. I didn't think anyone was around listening to my whining =) Thanks @Shog9 and @JeremyBanks.

@balpha Do you remember when I mentioned a problem with $ signs in inline code and MathJax and you worked around it by editing the post and replacing the $ sign by its character code? The same problem is popping up on Mathematica several times every week recently, and now we have a meta complaint as well. Just wanted to let you know.

@Szabolcs Isn't this the fifth time you've been here to ask?
I dunno what the exact policy is, but IIRC your site mods handle the coordination with SE
Though I guess its fine if you bug the devs every now and then, depends on the dev :\
Just that I've seen you here many many times to report a mathematica bug, am curious

Q: Building a server side autocomplete in C#

TriwisI wanted to know if it's possible to build an auto complete feature on server side (using ASP.NET & C#). Let say I have a class City... public class City { public string m_CityName; public string m_CityId; public City() { } public City(string cityName, string cityId) { ...

@Shog9 yeah, same here. I even bought a hideously expensive Acer convertible back with Windows XP tablet edition back in 2003. It was cool, but there was hardly any meaningful software support. Now I have an iPad, and I'm not going back.

@David Haha, well done =)

IE8 running in compatibility mode is causing one of my MVC views to submit to the wrong route. What is that I don't even.

@jadarnel27 It's causing server side problems, or are you using something fancy like client side MVC?

Hi all
@Moshe .... Kosher Delight is closed :-(

@TimYiJiang Haha, I don't really understand exactly what the problem is yet. When you click the submit button from the page /confirm/{id}, it submits to that, and then I see another request to /confirm/0/{id}. Which 404's, because that route doesn't make sense.
But it only adds the extraneous /0/ on IE8 in compatibility mode.

Check your JavaScript? I don't see how anything could affect the URL other than that
Technically speaking compatibility view is only about CSS I think. And maybe some JavaScript

10-4, looking at the JavaScript call now. There have been a couple other spots in this codebase where they used some jQuery that worked in everything but IE8.

Argh, I could have sworn there was a duplicate of this question somewhere on the network, but I cannot find it. |:
Now I'm worried that my brain has short-circuited and I'm actually thinking of when the migration notice was wrong for per-site meta -> main site migrations, but I don't think so...

Definitely a dupe

I can't find it anywhere though. shakes fist

Ugh. There's some sort of horrible function (named ieFixButtons()) that's being run on all page load that modifies all the submit buttons in older versions of IE.

Hahahaha

O_o

3:36 PM
Perhaps I should just rename it to ieBreakButtons() and move on?

Hahah, apparently.

How does it detect IE, UA strings?

@TimYiJiang Yup.
/MSIE [567]\./i.test(window.navigator.userAgent)
Oh, it's adding another submit handler. So it POSTs twice, once to the right route, and once to the wrong one. Resulting in the 404.

@TimYiJiang I found a case where I couldn't feature detect and that makes me very annoyed with the browser vendors. |:

@TimStone Hmm, where?

3:39 PM
@jadarnel27 ...Why did that ever make sense to anyone? Heh
@TimYiJiang XMLHttpRequest support for CORS
Opera only supports it in the most recent release, but as far as I can tell there's no way to know if it's supported unless you try to make the request.

A: Detect browser support for cross-domain XMLHttpRequests?

Crescent FreshAccording to http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/07/cross-site-xmlhttprequest-with-cors/ you should be able to use: if ('withCredentials' in new XMLHttpRequest()) { /* supports cross-domain requests */ } (Note: there is a comment on that page that Chrome 2 fails this test [although it does suppo...

@TimStone Haha, I don't know. I really don't.

@TimYiJiang Hmm, somehow I didn't think to search :P
That's great, then.

On a positive note, so far my changes to the elections page have not caused it to burst into flames.

Q: Create comment-spawned chatrooms for the post, not for the users

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AWhen you have too many comments on a question and/or answer the exchange comes up with some text asking if you want to move the discussion over to chat. When you do do that it creates a chat room for you and the other commentor. Would it not be better that in that situation it would create a ro...

The funny thing is, I remember this used to be a feature

3:58 PM
@TimYiJiang was it? when was this?

You could stick chat. in front of any question URL and it'll spawn a chatroom.

Yeah, and the idea was quashed with extreme prejudice. :P

@TimYiJiang Why did they kill that idea?
@TimStone link?

SO's suggested edit queue is getting clogged again

@TimYiJiang whoa

I think Jeff's answer on your question pretty much sums it up...

I don't remember anybody actually using the feature other than to test it out
It was a neat idea, but nobody knew about it.

Hmmmmmm Thats prob why noone used it.

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA - I know. What about the one on Ave J?

"But I was wondering what did microsoft screw up this time that this is not working from the code behind?" - I like this guy, for think that the problems in his code are Microsoft's fault.

Must be a strong Somebody Else's Problem field running where he works

Haha, yes! I think there must be one of those in our office up where the customer service reps work.
"My account's locked out."
"Did you forget your password?"
"No. I typed it in *right* three times, and it wouldn't let me in. Then it said you locked me out."

Too lazy to see if someone's already requested that for the next version though, heh.

The above was an actual conversation I had this morning. I'm not a fan of the IT guy being out today.

Moshe you were the first one out

I totally forgot to vote.
Ha.

Didn't you got notification? ;)

I get a lot of notifications for a lot of things.

8:07 PM
Oh no, we have no community bulletins now. :(

Well, you probably missed this one (well, not one, dozens and dozens)

@animuson If you can arrange for the untimely demise of a well-known developer, you might be able to convince Joel to put up a system message

ah, it was for primary, not the election

Man. I was really hoping awoodland was going to make it through the election. Oh wellz.
I don't think I had ever interacted with ThiefMaster before the election.

OMG HE STOLE THE ELECTION!
Allright, I really need to lay off the caps.

You can use commas to do variable declaration instead of using var each time

Only 13 more minutes until I can earn meta reps again ^_^

@TimYiJiang well yeah, but I wanted it to be traceable by someone without much experience in javascripting
@TimYiJiang so aside from that would you have done anything else differently?

@jcolebrand The one-millionth meta-chat message, and you spent it on... LOL
