@V2Blast I do! Whenever you're on a call with me you'll see one sitting on the shelf behind me 😀 They're from the 2012 meetup. Check out my unicorn history post on our Teams instance, it makes an appearance there.

@balpha hehe, and I even once asked to get one! There was event where we could ask what we want to get as prize. Didn't work though. :D
@DavidPostill isn't this part of spam definition?
So all spam posts are undisclosed affiliation, by definition.
poking @Luuk in the middle of his vacation

6:56 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard {shrug} these 2 had usernames matching the spam, the vast majority of spam doesn't

@DavidPostill second one isn't spam, it's long time member linking to GitHub, they don't gain anything out of it. That's not even blog post, where they might want to get traffic. That's just ordinary answer.

@ShadowTheKidWizard He still needs to disclose he is the author of the code repro.

@DavidPostill I don't think so, it's obvious with active members of a community.

7:25 AM
24 messages moved to Chimney

8:04 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard still busy packing. Leaving at 2AMish tomorrow

@Luuklag damn you have lots to pack, which is good sign, that you go for long time! :P

@ShadowTheKidWizard yes and no
there's a lot of situations where someone might aggressively shrill a 'free' software package they've posted
'I wrote a thing to solve a problem - this is how to use it"
vs
"This thing will solve the problem" low effort linkspam everywhere

@JourneymanGeek yeah that's true, but not the case in the reported post.
Active user who gets -100 for spam won't stay active and SE lose a good member over silly reason.

8:39 AM
That's weird, what happened to @Journeyman's "10 moderators are bad idea" message?
Pin might have expired, but it should still be on starboard...
hmm still there
Jul 8 at 13:21, by Journeyman Geek
moderators are a terrible idea
10 stars, July 8th... anyone remember how the star sorting works?

9:24 AM
@Luuklag where too?

@DialFrost my guess he's going to visit the blue cow.

@ShadowTheKidWizard hey XD

@DialFrost hi to you too!
More fitting:

@ShadowTheKidWizard You will not escape spam penalties by properly disclosing that it's your CBD gummies you're shilling on Stack Overflow.
3

@ShadowTheKidWizard whoops I meant "heh" but my autocorrect sabotaged me :P

9:58 AM
@RyanM oops, guess I'm busted. :P
@DialFrost you mean autoincorrect ;)

@ShadowTheKidWizard I am un mooed
@ShadowTheKidWizard tbh it was so funny no one would have thought of unpinning it
twas old tho

@JourneymanGeek moo
@JourneymanGeek yeah, message age plays too critical role IMO, should give them more time on top

maaaaa

10:44 AM
@SmokeDetector f "moderator decided it's fine and just added translation in addition to non-English version"
Guess site can decide it's accepting non-English posts.

@ShadowTheKidWizard nah, I'm just not that efficiënt. We'll be gone something like 15 days, heading up a bit northern.

@Luuklag nice!
Mispeldonk looks nice. ;-)

@ShadowTheKidWizard thats to the south ;)

@ShadowTheKidWizard misspelled donk?

11:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek y(es) ;)
@Luuklag oh oops. Oh well was a worthy guess. :D

11:21 AM
cleared out the user profile for the time being

@JourneymanGeek still spammy on the network profile though. Also, isn't the ability for a mod on single site to clear profile on all sites somewhat... overpower?

@ShadowTheKidWizard well yes

Not that it would likely to be abused, but still...

But the network profile is why I pinged jnat

11:29 AM
and In situations where a profile clearance isn't... the universally agreed idea, well other mods notice :D
here though, its the quickest way to do something

Also, scary in case of a mod on rage quit... can cause lots of damage this way. Is there at least some rate limit on profile edits by mod?

@ShadowTheKidWizard there's a rate limit on user deletions
I can't imagine or tried mass clearing accounts on its own

@JourneymanGeek yeah, that's good.

I've hit the user deletions rate limits

@JourneymanGeek 6-8 a day? ;)

11:30 AM
pages? sure

@JourneymanGeek you can, in theory, create like 50 socks and test on them. :D

Do I look like I have the time to do that? :D

@JourneymanGeek you're here, so yes! :P
e.g. @M.A.R. is busy, so he's not here. :(

@ShadowTheKidWizard lol I'm efficient and multitask but...

;)
Journeyman 3.0

11:33 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard a better job's good enough
It would be nice to have nights back and weekends

11:44 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard That's the case with almost any mod tool. Scarier is the PII access that mods have. If a mod goes rogue, that's a huge problem, but it's extremely unlikely to happen. The checks and balances in place tend to make sure those who wind up with diamonds can be trusted with them (usually).

@Mithical I really wish there was a clever way to obfuscate PII without neutering our tools

Oh, wait, we should be quiet about having PII access before the legal team hears...

@JourneymanGeek and vacations? ;)

and vacations

@Mithical well with hundreds of mods, and rising, chance of something slipping through the cracks is only increasing.

11:50 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard well - in theory the CMs keep us in check

@JourneymanGeek to access any PII data, the system would require two mods to authorize.
:)

I believe there is actually a fewer total number of moderators today than there were in 2019, although more multi-site mods.

@ShadowTheKidWizard well - that means you need to find another mod
and a good chunk of what we do is pretty mundane

@Mithical oh. Weird, but dunno. Thought many returned, and there were many elections.

also the PII we have is limited
email addresses? can do some damage with it. IPs ? ehhh I guess.

11:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek only IP address and email, but many people consider those to be sacred as well. ;(

Well they're private
but the damage we can do there is... probably limited

@ShadowTheKidWizard 546 in 2019, 537 today.

The damage is exposing them somewhere, leaking them, that's what people are afraid of.
But, someone really keen about their privacy will just create dummy email for SE login.

@ShadowTheKidWizard well yes
tbh, gmail is reasonably plausably deniable

@Mithical huh, nice find. :)

11:56 AM
actually someone reverse engineered the hash they use to generate the gravatars
and scraped basically tne entire userbase of a site
I think it was startups?

@JourneymanGeek meh, I don't consider this any security breech. Gravatar is proven beyond any doubt to offer 0 security and privacy, those who choose to use it should be aware that by doing so, they essentially share their email with the whole world.

@ShadowTheKidWizard same effect
it dosen't matter 'how' it gets leaked, only that it was

So if someone whines about email leaked due to Gravatar, they have no case.
@JourneymanGeek yeah, most people don't think like me, lol

and with all of this, its less the information and what people can do with it
My gmail account is valuble for spam
my work account on the other hand would have more value for someone trying to say compromise my employer

@JourneymanGeek that would require actually hacking the email, not just getting it, so different matter.

12:05 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard the first step is getting it

12:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek There is a mod script for that - Redacted Screenshots - Masks and hides user identifying info

@DavidPostill well yes and no
there's situations where we need it
but something like i donno, hashing a octet?

Does that sort of. Blanks the middle two octets or blanks all four.

and its gonna be a interesting thing to figure out with IPV6

Doesn't redact emails though.

5:22 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard I am notoriously bad at keeping socks.
Next thing you I find a random user in good standing and serially upvote them.
@ShadowTheKidWizard darned exams preventing me from dispensing my wisdom in here
@JourneymanGeek to that I say, have you been to ELL ashkually?

watching @M.A.R backreading
@M.A.R. looks like you always have exams, 24/7/365 ;)

It's like you forgot you have a mailbox and you check it out and find enough paper to cover the entire neighborhood in creamy yellow wallpaper, with three generations of flies waging war against their arachnid oppressors, and you think if you do a marginally better job of upkeeping it, like cleaning it every red moon or so, it might look significantly better

@M.A.R. don't have to keep. Create 50, use them, forget about them and/or throw them away. ;)

So you do end up on meta.ELL as it has always been your destiny, except it's like a broken karaoke machine filled with previous recordings of people who had similar ideas about the upkeep of your mailbox and how best to handle the thriving ecosystem in it

@M.A.R. ash-kually? hmm
@M.A.R. head too squishy I'll read again in 6-8
ohh you still talk about ELL and ash :D

5:36 PM
Yes, it's called an analogical metaphorical simile

throwing si and mile on @M.A.R

All I'm saying is people think witches curse them, but it's actually ELL.
Which is like a, like a box
Full of strawberry jam
If the strawberry jam was a samurai

Your sense fades away slowly :D

This fantastical soliloquial analogy is getting too figuratively metaphorical

Each message makes less sense than the previous..... ;)

5:40 PM
Labadoobadooo

obado obada
Wait there is sense in that one

gasp
You kiss your mother with that mouth?

Lab ADO 0 bad ooo
ADO is bringing back old old memories
Year 2000
I'm reading ASP For Dummies
ADO is imprinted in my memory
ADO.Recordset the most useful thing.

Asp is just a snake, dummy
@ShadowTheKidWizard I'm not trying to send an encrypted message to ask for help and an air raid. I'm not.

6:01 PM
@M.A.R. thats a good thing because I don't have the mod tools to deal with stuff like that.

6:13 PM
@M.A.R. uh oh, you have been captured by the Great @Ollie now it's all clear!
:D

1 hour later…
7:16 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard ADO Den Haag? For good old memories you need to go way back ....

4 hours later…
11:13 PM
@M.A.R. nope
