Q: Sponsor Gallery, Page, or Something Like That?

Alex Papadimoulisnhj asked the other day, How to revisit ad in Stackoverflow? In my answer, I wrote: We were thinking of putting together a "sponsor gallery" of sorts that listed out all of the sponsors with a brief description. Kinda in the vein of what we have on the every-now-and-then sponsor appreciation ...

Anonymous
Does anybody know if this ever happened? I remember seeing a page of ads, but that may have just been the free community ones.

Anonymous
3
A: Is there a way to see all "Sponsored Tags"?

Alex PapadimoulisA "sponsor gallery" is on the to-do list... I suppose we could list the tags that are sponsored under the copy. So like... [Adobe Logo] - Flash and Flex provide .... (more copy)... sponsored tags: [flash], [flex],... Maybe we'll get to it in Oct some time....

Anonymous
I'm searching for other Microsoft ads. Manually going through the tags isn't terrible but if there's a faster way...

I don't believe so.
You're right that there's a page for the community ads, though.
Wow, that's...an extremely low number of clicks.
Gaming's list, for comparison.

Anonymous
That is surprising.

2:25 AM
Yeah, I wonder if the ads are being shown at the correct rates.
Probably so, but it seems like they're heavily stacked in favour of Careers, and then occasionally network ads. Makes sense, but seems like you'd want one of them to show an actual ad on a frequent basis since there's always at least one Careers ad in the sidebar.

Oh, there we go, finally got an actual ad to come up in the sidebar.
@RebeccaChernoff >_>

Anonymous
I like having somewhere to test without my changes being bumped onto everybody's page.

Heh :P

Anonymous
Maybe I should have waited to briefly undelete it until I didn't know there were 10ks around. :P

2:29 AM
why does that need to be on mso at all? what's wrong with a local page or jsfiddle or whatever?
I'm confused.

Anonymous
@RebeccaChernoff If you give me a minute I'll probably be able to come up with a decent rationalization.

Anonymous
In this case I wanted to experiment with putting a random post's ID into http://meta.stackoverflow.com/ads/display/XYZ and seeing what could happen.

Anonymous
Generally... it's just a novelty to store information in deleted MSO posts. No good reason.

@JeremyBanks why did you need a new post for that?
mso isn't your notebook ya know...

Anonymous
2:35 AM
@RebeccaChernoff (re: this time, not generally) I did try to use the Formatting Sandbox before, but it seemed to only include the first page of posts, so I'd need to edit somebody else's and I didn't want to give them a notification.

3:00 AM
> You've earned the "bug" badge. See your profile.
\o/
I feel somewhat out of place, heh. ;)

And now I want some waffles.

Someone should probably warn him not to come too close when you have a fork in hand.

It's okay, I'm more of a passive hunter like a spider.
Just tell him to stay away from tasty looking maple syrup webs.

3:16 AM
@TimStone: You should fix mine. ;P haha

Well, I did reply! I will take care of the display issue here in a bit.

I want to change that 25 most downvoted users query to 25 most annoying users query, but weighting tenacity and frequency of posts against downvote percentage seems rather subjective.

I don't think I'm magical enough to login exactly 7 hours later believing it was my first time logging in. :P
Especially since I was in bed asleep 16 hours ago

there's at least one spot where SEDE displays times in local time instead of UTC, this could be another spot
@TimStone should fix ^^^ while he's looking though q:

If you're talking about that super obvious spot, I'm surprised no one's noticed.

3:21 AM
what super obvious spot? (:

The fact that all date times in the results are displayed in local time? :P

yeah, that one
we've run into that internally a few times on calls lol

Sam switched it to return milliseconds instead of the time string it was returning before to support the graphing, so this is a side-effect of that.

Can Jeff send me a giant check mark to bludgeon people with?

I'll figure out a way to fix it, though.

3:23 AM
I did look at the creation date difference though. My thought process went like this:

But anyway, the "member for" field on the user profile actually used to have a UTC/non-UTC bug, but that was fixed...so not sure what the problem is in @animuson's case.

7 hours eh? server's in Oregon, that's PDT, 7 hours off UTC
search code for DateTime.Now instead of DateTime.UtcNow

I'm in CDT though xP

Can Joel send me a giant novelty cheque to attempt to cash?

nope, that doesn't seem to be it
"meh"
Do I get bonus points for that investigation?

3:25 AM
YOU GET A SINGLE, WORTHLESS STAR.

hmmm I appear to just be sucking whipped topping through the straw now :|

That is one creepy gif.

...

Psh, and people complained because I posted a dancing banana!

I am in a state of confusion now, so yes, bonus points to @RebeccaChernoff.

3:26 AM
for some reason, that img makes me laugh >_<

I got a free phone book in my PO Box :o

What a waste of paper...
Nobody puts their phone number in a phone book anymore...

NO! I missed a creepy GIF.

it's not creepy ):

3:32 AM
...Huh.

OK, repro'ed @animuson.

HA so I didn't get up and sleep-compute!

@mootinator Hum.
You're right, it is creepy.
Ctrl+W

Ohhhh.

3:34 AM
every time I look at it, I chuckle.

Yes, I see the bug now.

what's wrong with me? >_<

That yellow thing needs to learn to chew with his mouth closed... gross.

(don't answer that, kthx)

@RebeccaChernoff I'm sure I'll regret admitting it, but I also laughed a bit >_>
Let's see whose fault this bug is...

3:35 AM
Haha what is this a game show?

please be not me, please be not me, please be not me

I've got Jeff.
Cmon big money.

I bet Sam (:

clap clap clap BIG MONEY clap clap clap
has watched too much Wheel of Fortune over the last 30 years.

plays Jeopardy music

3:38 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Correct!

the odds were kind of in my favor (;

:o I bet she investigated like before and already knew the answer! ><

Well, I knew it wasn't my fault this time. ;)

Wait, this is hunger games?
That changes EVERYTHING!

if I have to randomly guess who a line of code came from, I will always guess Sam for SEDE.

Anonymous
3:39 AM
@mootinator Thank you for the segue.

Anonymous
Has anybody read The Hunger Games and do they recommend it?

u.CreationDate = DateTime.UtcNow;
// ...
u.Id = Current.DB.Users.Insert(new { u.Email, u.Login }).Value;

@JeremyBanks yes, absolutely

Let's play "spot the problem"

@JeremyBanks I have! And yes I do!
But not the movie!
Unless you already watched it!

Anonymous
3:39 AM
I haven't seen it.

Too many exclamation marks!

@JeremyBanks My sister does as well. Haven't read them myself.

read the books first
but then after that I totally recommend the movie

Anonymous
I have one friend who recommends the book, but I don't trust his judgement enough to read it without other people backing him up.

Yeah, read the books. Otherwise you won't even understand some parts of the movie.
That's why I don't recommend it.

3:40 AM
The movies coming out just made me want to see Battle Royale again.

the first book is the best out of the 3, but I still recommend all 3

The last one is rather morbid and depressing! But of course you have to read it!
Sentence!
Fragments!

Anonymous
@RebeccaChernoff @minitech Okay, thanks for the input. I'll read at least the first one.

I was considering buying the trilogy for my playbook. This conversation increases the odds of that happening.

I don't like reading books. :P

3:42 AM
@animuson Fixed in my local environment, thanks.

Anonymous
@animuson How about eBooks?

Anonymous
I'm now reading several times more than I did before I got a Kindle.

@JeremyBanks Is a Kindle a lot better than a Kobo?

I've only read four books voluntarily: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, A Crack in the Line, Loser, and White Fang

I rented one from the local library and wasn't really impressed...

Anonymous
3:44 AM
@minitechη Can't say; I've never used anything except a Kindle (G3/Keyboard).

@JeremyBanks How long does it take to flip pages?

Anonymous
Having dozens of books to chose from at a time, so I don't stop reading if I get sick of a particular book, has been the biggest factor for me.

I dunno what a Kobo is, but I read the HG trilogy on my kindle (:

@JeremyBanks I have the nasty habit of bookmarking books with other books =P

Anonymous
@minitechη Haha, that's a nice mental image.

3:46 AM
@JeremyBanks It's really great when you want to bookmark 2 places in each book, though ;)
Just interlace them.
But then when you want to read them again, it doesn't seem so great.

sticky notes!

Anonymous
@minitechη Kind-of slow, I guess, but I don't notice anymore. It's sort-of like you have enough buffered (text which I've seen but not really "processed") that it feels seamless, even though it isn't.

Honestly, I used to do better on my quizzes and tests when I hadn't read the book. I was much better at making up BS about what I thought would happen than trying to remember what actually did happen.

4:11 AM
Spamming the interwebbernets, seem to have accidentally emailed everyone on BCC, except my mom.

Whoops. Sorry mom!

I didn't get one.

Since when is Pibb Xtra a cherry soda? It doesn't taste very cherry-ish to me...
Oh the random things you learn from reading a pop can!

Inorite?

4:27 AM
@mootinator What's your email addy?
nvm
got it
@mootinator You did. Just for you. Spam. In a digital not-can.
Ok night folks. The monthly data cap is a-ringing.

@RebeccaChernoff \o/

Grrr bad JavaScript error that is ambiguous and doesn't tell me anything useful ><

Hmm?

"Unexpected end of input" lol
Apparently it doesn't like when you do if (something) alert('test'); // Some comment

Ah, you're missing something somewhere. :P

No, I removed the comment and it worked. I don't understand this!

5:18 AM
It doesn't like when you do if (something) { alert('test'); // Some comment } That's for sure.

Because the function that actually goes there wasn't working, so I commented it out and added a alert('test'); to see if the if condition was failing...

10:37 AM
@mar - Hey there! Do you have any idea how this user was able to do this with his comment?

This is either the greatest or worst app ever

11:25 AM
@Lix that's just unicode
right-to-left character

Lix
@mar - thanks :) Yes - the user was kind enough to indulge me :) Now I am freaking out all the folks in the office :P

looks like it has upset some of our handling though; flagging internally

Lix
Now I'll get shouted at for bringing it to your attention ;)

YES YOU WILL

Lix
drat... just when they were starting to like me... ok... THIS CONVO NEVER HAPPENED!

12:16 PM
Haha

@Lix Nah, no such thing as a "bad" bug report
just variations on "crap, now I have more work to do"

12:57 PM
// Deep cloning - the (very very very) stupid way
var renderData = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(data));
I need my computer to punch me whenever I see this piece of code again and choose not to fix it
4

@YiJiangsProble_ That depends... How performant does the code need to be? If it only gets hit once in a great while, then meh
I've definitely seen worse ways to do it

Lix
@cde - you obviously have never seen the bugs I get ;)

@Lix So, are you saying that you do deep cloning in those worse ways? :)

@YiJiangsProble_ Hahah

Lix
@cde - no - I mean about 'no such thing as a "bad" bug report'

1:09 PM
@Lix Ah, got it. I suppose the caveat is that there has to actually be a bug for it to be an actual bug report, but I'm sure you get some rather... entertaining... ones

Good morning all

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA morning

Lix
@ama - gmorning :P
@cde - When a bug comes in that says "It doesn't work" and I asked the QA person - "What exactly doesn't work" and the response is "Facebook is telling me that I have entered the wrong password"

wow

Lix
Yea.... wow indeed...
I spend half my time explaining to them how Facebook works...

1:13 PM
so then, would that get resolved as "Not a bug" or "No repro" ? :)

Lix
"No my friend -you can not "LIKE" a person"...you can not "poke a page"...

lol

Lix
I don't mind getting bug reports ....really... Its great - someone else pointing you to the problems... but when most of my time is spent trying to understand them - its a waste of time...

@Lix Agreed. There is a serious deficit in many people's ability to clearly explain...anything (especially a software / computer problem they're having).

@jadarnel27 You could have probably stopped after "...many people" ;-)

Lix
1:21 PM
@jad - Under any other circumstance I am very tolerant of technophobes... But when a bug report like those gets submitted from a person that is working for a QA company -

@cdeszaq Well that too =)
@Lix Oh. Yeah, that's pretty pathetic. =/
Awesome picture, by the way.

Lix
People can study for years to be great QA personal... but honestly any monkey can do QA :P
no disrespect meant at all... this is simply reality...

@Lix I agree. But it's a breath of fresh air when you get to work with a great QA person / team

Lix
oh yes! When someone writes out a complete and detailed scenario to reach an awkward bug - its fantastic!
@cde @jad - right now the bug i'm dealing with is titled - "bottons becomeing blinking"
and yes - the typos are really in there....

Lix
1:28 PM
If you want to report bugs in English please at least TRY...

That's... (I don't even have the words)

Lix
I think the word you are looking for is "#$%^&*#@$^&#%$^#$"
or some variation :P
Kinda looks like a regex from this angle ;)

Yeah, a bit. But gone horribly, horribly wrong

Lix
maybe its for parsing HTML ;)
(* the ghost of bobince is among us *)
From @bobince 's profile :P hehehe :
> Favourite desktop OS: they're all equally annoying, so might as well go for the free one

too true. But the bigger irritation for me is not having all of my stuff and the same environment on every computer / device I use.

1:35 PM
So...check out this SO profile

Lix
you could use cygwin for your M$ machines....

The about me section is...unusual =)

Lix
I've seen that user around actually :P

yeah, he caused some trouble... and his stuff is poor quality

Lix
1:37 PM
@ama - LOL :P just saw that :P
why isn't @Dha-Sow-Aiz-Wad in chat!??!

Funny though... his rep profile doesn't say that serial downvoting was reversed
he just got a bounty he posted un-set.

@Lix Hehe i made my name the right way if u ddnt notice ^_^

Lix
@ama - (* mind blown *) once again :PP

Star this! ‮Mooo hahahaha
3
@Lix ^^^‮

Lix
peer pressure :P

1:39 PM
@Lix twill be cool i promise

Lix
I feel like staring the second one :P

@Lix dont i added some unicode to the 1st one

Lix
At leas then my username will be in the side list ;)

Lix
@jad - you shouted at me first time I was in chat for starring everything :P

1:41 PM
@Lix I think "shouted" is a little strong =P "Gently corrected your ways"
Is how I would put it.

glitchy...

Lix
@san - unicody :)
Chatception -

Is there anyway to know how many post we have edited ?

@Dharmendra Yep. You can got to http://stackoverflow.com/review/ and see your editing badge progress on the right side.
@Dharmendra You can also go to the "editors" tabs on the users page (http://stackoverflow.com/users?tab=editors&filter=all) and then search for your name. That number includes edits that were just retags (which don't count towards the badge, so they aren't on the review page).

1:50 PM
@MarcGravell - The mirror character causes glitches in stared messages also (just FYI)

embarrassingly detailed knowledge of SE sites dispersed

@cdeszaq I taught @ama about magic unicode characters. He apparently still finds them fascinating. As long as he has something to play with and doesn't cause any harm, that's fine.

@jadarnel27 Thanks

@balpha K, just as long as you fine folks are aware :)

@Dharmendra No problem =)

Lix
1:54 PM
Can I interest anyone for a cup-o-vim? ^_^

@balpha Thanky ^_^

By the way @Lix, I'm now using (something like) that jQuery you helped me with in production. It's - literally - being used by...tens of people!
I know, I know - this is very exciting for you.

Lix
@jad - hehehehehe - always nice to get feedback :P
happy to help :P

I wonder if doing an equal amount of serial upvoting and downvoting on the same user would trip the "suspicious voting" thingamajig. Or if they would just cancel out, not getting reversed, resulting in a net increase for the targeted person.

@jadarnel27 I would imagine it looks for any series of votes, not just a particular type
although, I think that if they balance, it should probably not be considered abuse
(and by balance, I mean in the number of votes, not the amount of rep change)
(( But then, that allows the system to be gamed... boo ))

2:06 PM
@cdeszaq That's what I was thinking about. I figured it would trip the suspicous vote check, but the equality might cause it to not be actionable.

((( I'm sure the dev team had almost exactly this conversation at some point )))

Lix
My understanding is that when voting fraud is detected then ALL votes from the user will be nullified... upvote downvote leftvote and rightvotes alike...

I guess, all said and done, it would probably result in pesky warnings or suspensions. Which sounds like a hassle.
@cdeszaq That's very likely. They've had quite some time to refine the vote fraud stuff.

@jadarnel27 Yeah, the back-end tooling (meaning, everything that a "new" user doesn't see) is rather amazing. I don't know of any other site or system that has such extensive and robust controls as SO.
But then again, I've never really "been inside" any other system, and have only been inside SO as far as the 10k tools, but even that much control is rather amazing

Lix
@cde - stop it :P you are making us jealous ;)

2:12 PM
@Lix Sry, can't help it :). And if you'd answer more questions (especially in tags I'm familiar with), i'd be able to give you more reps

Lix
Hahahaha - I'm too wrapped up in meta at the moment :P Need to get my muse back :P
Perhaps a request for a temporary meta ban is in order... :/

@Lix heh, I know the feeling

@cdeszaq I just realized that I've used one of your questions as a reference before, and never upvoted it.

@jadarnel27 Heh, yeah, that's actually one of my more popular ones. I should really update it

2:17 PM
What the number after the "x" indicates ?

@Dharmendra How many users have earned that badge.

@Dharmendra The number of people who have been awarded that badge, in the system
@jadarnel27 Drat... 2 seconds!

@cdeszaq Well, you did type more words than me =)

oh okay.

@Lix Didn't you tell me there's a Chrome extension that lets you run jQuery expressions on the fly to test them out?

2:22 PM
@jadarnel27 That's built-in to Chrome, as long as you can browse to a site that uses jQuery
just open the console and go to town :) (stack-overflow, for example, works well)

@cdeszaq Oh, you can just use the console?

yup

Haha I'm crazy as hell. Thanks @cdeszaq.

@jadarnel27 No prob. I expect you can do it in Firebug (for Firexox, since i'm not sure if it has a native console) too. There's probably an equivalent in just about all current major browsers

2:26 PM
@Lix Ah, that's what I was thinking of! Thanks.

I bet all it does is insert a script tag pointing at the Google jQuery CDN into the page

Lix
NP! Super uber useful tool.... especially when there is a really annoying element on a site that you'd rather do without :P
$("#shittyBanner").remove(); :P

@Lix Does that then stick for that entire domain? or do you need to run that for each page?

Lix
for each page...

So then, you might as well right-click, inspect, delete-node... not too much slower, no? (and 1 less memory-eating extension)

Lix
2:30 PM
true true true.... but you could also do $("#shittyBanner").fadeOut();
and make all your geeky friends go "oooooooooooo" :P

lol, yeah, until one is a jQuery wiz, steps in, and makes everything fly around and turn into little monsters as it disappears.

Lix
jquery wiz you say? try this out - paste it into the address bar -
javascript:var i,s,ss=['http://kathack.com/js/kh.js','http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jque‌ry/1.5.1/jquery.min.js'];for(i=0;i!=ss.length;i++){s=document.createElement('scri‌pt');s.src=ss[i];document.body.appendChild(s);}void(0);
you might have to manually add the javascript: because chrome removes it automatically...

@Lix No dice, in any browser

Lix
@cde - yea... the good ones anyway :P

@Lix I see "Uncaught Error: INVALID_CHARACTER_ERR: DOM Exception 5 (anonymous function)" in the console when I do that.

Lix
2:37 PM
Seems to work for me hey... maybe go to that url and take the actual bookmarklet...
I'm on ubuntu 10.4 and latest chrome and it works...

@Lix Oh, indeed. The bookmarklet works.

@jadarnel27 Did you drop the javascript: protocol from the code?

Awesome =)

@cdeszaq Firefox now blocks the javascript protocol when the user tries to run something by typing into the URL bar

@YiJiangsProble_ It did disappear, but I retyped it before pressing enter in the address bar.

Lix
2:41 PM
@jad - Hope you didn't do it here in chat :P You'll have to refresh :P

Bookmarklets still works, of course

very much entertaining. (the bookmarklet worked)

It's erkie, isn't it? Man, I can remember it by looking at the URL of the script it's trying to load

@Lix Hehe... It gets SOOO BIG!

Oh, it's the Katamari thingy. Also, invalid char in the string 'script' being passed to document.createElement
That's the error which the console is telling me anyway. I think an invisible unicode char may have crept in there or something. Not sure...

Lix
2:44 PM
@cde - yea :P hehe... also fun to do it on Facebook and see it pick up all the profile pictures of friends :P
@YiJ - I blame @ama ;)

Yeah - "'scri‌pt'".length returns 10 - there's 2 extra character somewhere in there

Lix
@YiJiangsProble - did you get my ping? It doesn't seem to be referencing your last message...

I do now. Three characters minimum for notifications.
var i,s,ss=['http://kathack.com/js/kh.js','http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jque‌ry/1.5.1/jquery.min.js'];for(i=0;i!=ss.length;i++){s=document.createElement('script');s.src=ss[i];document.body.appendChild(s);}

Lix
@YiJiangsProble - i.imgur.com/Kbznw.png

@Lix eh? what did I do? I just saw I was pinged

Lix
2:48 PM
@ama - unicode issues ;)

This works from the console, with the invisible char removed, just in case anybody still needs it

@cdeszaq Missed opportunity for a "that's what she said" right there.

Lix
@jad - HAHAHA! I don;t think a better opportunity exists ;)
missed THE opportunity :p

Lix
@jad that deletes your meta chat messages? Works pretty well :P

2:58 PM
