@JourneymanGeek on mobile you have all the stats crammed up above the titles, thats horribly hard to distinguish, or to scroll through.

Wierdly I prefer it to the random stacks of stats of variable heights

Also probably cause vertical space on a phone is 'cheap' and it's the opposite on a modern widescreen monitor

Yeah. I think there's something fundamentally broken with the way these changes are announced/put up for review: Usually these posts score positively until the changes actually roll out further, because the way they're announced/put up for review now doesn't allow users to meet the bumps they meet once the change rolls out.

That, and I think there's a difference between the group that sees these initially and the group that arrives once the change has actually rolled out.

I have no way/ideas to fix either though

@Tinkeringbell This one was really misleading, I never expected this to hit the frontpage without another big meta post. But in general it's impossible to test this stuff before it's deployed, screenshots are not enough and even this case with a kind of sandbox in the greatest hits page is not the same

The one before this had a 5m youtube video showcasing changes to the profiles, it went the same way.

But I don't really see the main problem with the feedback here, the newer designs all had fundamental problems that shouldn't require the community to tell SE that they're broken, they should know that already

Then it's just weird that those posts aren't gathering massive amounts of downvotes immediately.

Because if you're presented with screenshots, youtube videos, or a sandbox that is broken and users and SE know that already... where do the upvotes come from?

It's much, much harder to get a good impression from screenshots, and a lot of the issues were not immediately visible in the screenshots with the activity page for example

I just figured out how to control my mac from my watch.

The answer is to create fake HomeKit accessories using HomeBridge and for example listen to the events associated with turning a light on and off and use that to trigger siri shortcuts that set music to play and pause.

But simply calling the command line siri shortcuts API from the HomeBridge event handler in nodejs doesn't work because There was a problem communicating with the application, but it works if I spawn a new node http server whose purpose is to call shortcuts, then HomeBridge just needs to make an http request. The call to shortcuts also has to be done with spawnSync instead of spawn because otherwise shortcuts decides to hang forever for some reason.

Despite being held together with duct tape, it works! When I tap the button on my watch the music starts playing in about half a second if everything's on the same WiFi network.

Actually, yes! Moving a few states south of me. The winters are milder which is great, and the summers aren't too bad.

Gonna do remote work for my current workplace for a little while so they can transition out of having competent peo- I MEAN ... Transition out of relying upon me for a bulk of their current work and so that my institutional knowledge isn't lost.

They're... Pretty bad at paying their people well. Hence the move (no other real opportunities here) + job switch (straight up not profitable to continue working here now that I've got years of experience).

They've got a support tech department that they've paid 15/hr for years now. They only recently gave them a weak raise.

Oh, it's even a tiny bit similar to here... I know the company I'm working for now will always pay worse than what I'd be getting if I worked directly for the client they're renting me to.

They've got a draftsman here, friend of mine. He's doing an engineer's job for a CAD drawer's pay. Essentially the president of the company will call him and expect him to work out a whole new design of parts/a new product and also expect him to factor in cost of materials when said president's ideas get him into a potential financial pit. Plus he needs to factor in material strengths and etc. that he doesn't have a degree for.

They refuse to hire an actual engineer, only people with "CAD experience"

The program they use, Autodesk Inventor, is also like... Exceptionally old and not in use anymore, and they require knowledge of it.

an immediate improvement would be removing the desktop threshold that moves the left shtuff to the left, leaving it all on top. At least then we wouldn't have so much dead space on the majority of questions. Step 2 would be re-ordering them so that the important bits are first, and bumping the font size up so they can be easily read. Then, remove score/answers from that list and put them back on the left.

and... remove teh tiny avatars

then, with score and answers no longer in the list, you can add closed status to it

@Rob Dishwashers are on their feet pretty much their whole shift though, and loading/unloading the dishes is also pretty physical...

unfortunately, the physical difficulty of a job isn't often part of the pay, at least here in the states

@KevinB Oh, it's also not over here. My brother used to be a zookeeper, which was both physical and dangerous as he was doing dives into the aquariums... He's making more now as a programmer than he ever would've reached at the zoo

just the nature of service jobs. your zoo example, it takes a lot of people to run a zoo, but if the ticket price is too high, noone will come... so you can't pay people great wages. A software company on the other hand... generally are selling to other businesses as a premium, with a very small staff... so higher wages

part of what killed manufacturing here... factory worker wages were really good. when the opportunity became apparent to reduces those wages by producing overseas... the choice was easy, from a business PoV. You can be the "Good" business and keep making in the US, but the consumer isn't going to be willing to pay that premium for long

bit more complex than that, but same general idea for all the problems that resulted in this situation
