@JourneymanGeek How about Marc, he's #6: stackoverflow.com/users/23354/marc-gravell

@Rob well he just quit so....
He probably either has worked here for years or has a very charmed life 😁

Rob
@JourneymanGeek His "last week", so not unemployed yet. Also: "... the longest lasting SE employee now", except Joel.

Just found a pluralization bug on Ask Ubuntu. Should I report it on Meta SE, or will I get bludgeoned by a giant S? :)

4:17 AM
I took this risk. Posted: meta.stackexchange.com/q/370975/1081494

@Rob turns out sword is even on YouTube.
@Feeds after few success stories, onebox failure is inevitable.
@cocomac giant S is long dead, you don't have to worry. :)
Only place where pluralization bugs are frowned upon (that I know of for sure) is Winterbash, as it's only temp event hence not worth wasting dev time on that.

Does anyone know if there is a way to "track" tag bagdes (see total score and number of answers on a tag)

The dialog on your profile page?
You can click the cogwheel and see more tags, their score and number of answers.

@SPArcheon Another way is to mouse over the numbers on meta.stackexchange.com/users/171199/sparcheon?tab=tags

@Tinkeringbell thanks.

9:19 AM
yw

oh, yea. RIGHT.
The stupid requirement.
That is the reason.
I keep forgetting that wonderful thing.

heyo

Forget what I was going to ask next I guess, my old question just answered myself.
> If enough votes are earned in a tag with 100+ total questions, the badge will be automatically created and awarded.
yeah..... so going to happen
[assorted hissing sounds]

the sins of my past have come to haunt me
I used to release inconsequential code under GPL before I knew enough about it to realise how restrictive that is

@magisch So, it's your code, why not just change the license to something more allowing?

9:28 AM
@magisch If it can be of any consolation, I just realized I need someone to post 20 more question on a very specific tag. I'll let you guess what tag.

@Tinkeringbell The background is that i've been contacted by someone who has essentially been violating my license for 6 years, by having incorporated my GPL'd code into a closed source commercial application. Now they've contacted me hoping I can help them resolve this as their bosses are breathing down their neck
I'm not sure if i'm allowed to, but i'd like to just re-release the code under cc0

Oh well, then ask them to ask their bosses to get their lawyers to tell you... :P

I have a feeling that their bosses would not be appreciative that they essentially admitted on behalf of their company via email that they've been comitting copyright infringement for 6 years.

Hmm. And a 'I promise I won't sue' e-mail won't do?

Mind you, I don't know much about licensing beyond that I don't want anything to do with it
@Tinkeringbell Not sure. But I don't want to clue them in that the guy contacted me, because he might get in more trouble for that. I want to ideally find a solution where he can say "Hey I got the author to also release this under $licensethatworks"
These days I use cc0 for all my shit because it means nobody has to annoy me asking licensing questions

9:35 AM
Well there's a site for open source stuff where people seem to love discussing licenses ;)

Yeah I asked on there

This problem has led me to revisiting stack exchange once again
Well that and voting for Zoe in the SO Mod election that's currently ongoing
2

@magisch Assuming you're the only copyright holder, there's no reason you couldn't offer the code under CC0 (or even offer a choice of GPL or CC0). If you're not the only copyright holder, it's more complicated (I should go read the question, shouldn't I...)

@magisch ZOE?
THAT Zoe?
then... at least you made me aware, see the bright side there.

9:39 AM
@RyanM Im the sole copyright holder to that program. It's a small script I wrote to help a friend while at uni
@SPArcheon Yah. I just had to log in to vote for zoe
@RyanM opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/12231 in case you know the answer and want to farm 25 rep

@magisch maaaaybe a dupe of opensource.stackexchange.com/q/33/21733? thoughts?
Otherwise, I do in fact know the answer.

@magisch I can see why. Yet... is she really sure she wants to get that involved? I mean, has my support... but also my admiration for the courage.

eh

I still wouldn't really want do risk for that job.

If she doesn't end up wanting it she can always resign or refuse the appointment. She's running so i'm voting for her
@RyanM That works going forward, but I kind of want to create a situation where I can give him reassurances that I'm not, in fact, going to sue for 6 years of ongoing copyright infringement
Not that I would anyways it was never my intention to get paid for what was a few hours as an absolute beginner but his manager doesn't know that.

9:44 AM
@SPArcheon you could go ask her if you want :-) she also touched on it in question 4 of the questionnaire and a couple comments (this and the following one from her)

Basically is there any way to make it so the previous 6 years werent copyright infringement
I think it should be possible - it's my own copyright after all - but I don't know

Ah, hmm. That's tricky...you'd want to avoid a gratuitous promise.
But I think you could certainly agree to retroactively license it in exchange for some trivial consideration or something.
That part I'm less confident about the law on.

The "consideration" at the time was that I was looking for a real world example exercise and they gave me a problem statement that I could use
As in I did it because I wanted to learn C and this was an exercise they came up with for me for that.
I really don't want to have to pay a lawyer just to save an acquaintance of mine from getting reprimanded

I mean you could probably easily license it for like, $10 with a simple contract that you wrote saying this is payment for past 6 years of use, but that might be more annoying for you than anything.
Also this is not legal advice and I am not a lawyer.

This is what I meant by the sins of my past have come to haunt me
If I had started releasing everything under cc0 earlier i would not have this headache now

10:08 AM
@magisch had they validated the code usage under the license....
and more importantly... had humanity wrote license agreements that would be understandable by everyone without need for a lawyer.

10:32 AM
@SPArcheon Tbh, 1) I didn't know they'd actually use my code in production, 2) I had no idea what GPL was and only picked it because it was the last license I saw somewhere else and because I vaguely remembered I needed a license and 3) He didn't know at the time either and neither of us ever checked. It came up now because someone else found the license blurb in a directory over there.
2014 Magisch was a much bigger noob then 2021 Magisch

@magisch In this case "they" wasn't the gender-neutral version. "They" as in "the ones that used the code".

@magisch lots of cases where folks dual licence their own software

Translated - you may feel bad because you released the code under GPL, but the ones who were due to check were the ones using the code.
Aka, it is fine if you help, but it is not your fault.
or even more bluntly - you seem to be felling quite bad for a problem you didn't cause.

Well I didnt cause it but I figured I'd be able to fix it
With the code being my own property after all

Unless someone else has contributed additional code, you can relicence, or even close off software licences (see paint.net moving from an MIT licence blog.getpaint.net/2009/11/06/a-new-license-for-paintnet-v35 )

10:36 AM
@magisch and that is very kind of you, but I was just advising you don't go like "it is my fault for releasing the thing under GPL"

I think i'm gonna ask him to tell his manager that I have no intention to sue and that they should come up with something for me to sign that gives them permission to use the code free of charge and free of GPL retrictions
If someone has to pay a lawyer to write that it should be them
I hate the legal system sometimes, earlier this year I had to go through a bunch of shit because I loaned someone money without interest and apparently that's considered a gift (the interest you didn't collect) and gets asessed against social security payments here.

Laws exist to ruin life of those who follow them based on the assumption that they present an obstacle to those who simply ignore them.
Basically, you can't have nice things because the rotten apples will continue to do wrong even with the rule.
Also known as the DRM principle.

Literally someone at the social agency spent time calculating the interest I should have collected from my friend and reduced his assistance payment by that much

The only DVD player Securom can break is that of the one who paid for the game...

Because taking a few extra euros from people right on the edge of poverty is a proper use of the time we pay taxes to employ those people for.

10:51 AM
@magisch ow

> It is sooo freaking nice to see tv ads for "please donate 9$/month to this social charity group / rare disease research / whatever".... followed by disgusting shows like "Insane Pools Off the Deep End" that shows you how the rich guy of the day will spend 700k$ on a pool for their garden.
ignore the rants past that message though. there, left just the message, quote of mine from another room.

@JourneymanGeek You have no idea how angry I got at the government shits for that

I can imagine

I worked out something else

10:56 AM
Not gonna leave that around
but still you know what I mean

11:20 AM
The system is quite similar here, there was quite a high-profile case where parents kept supplying the groceries. Eventually after all the court cased the amount owed was reduced from 7.000 to 2.800, because the municipality didn't have enough proof of this happening for part of the time period this was about.

I think more tax money was wasted on the court case and legal fees than will ever be recovered by the municipality...

@Tinkeringbell What pisses me off is that they have time and manpower for this, while at the same time they are supposedly overworked and delaying payments by 3+ Months for families at risk of evictions. I would not have had to lend him money if they could get their ass into gear and do what they're being paid for (also with taxes, by the way)
He filed in april and didnt get paid until october

@magisch Ugh. Probably the excuse will be that those two are done by different departments? XD

maybe, but I can still be angry at that

Sure!

and i'm not gonna charge my friends interest

11:26 AM
I don't loan money to begin with ;)

I don't loan money i'm not 100% okay with never seeing again

Yeah... and I'm a 'you made a promise, you keep it' kind of person, so if I were to loan money the other person would make a promise to pay it back (otherwise it's not a loan) and if that doesn't happen I wouldn't be okay with that.
So, better for me not to even try ;)

eh
to be honest in this situation I was very clear that he should only pay it back if it doesn't cause him undue hardship to do it. I think the reason he did is because he's a bit like you. I wouldn't have been upset just calling it a gift
Also I offered of my own accord, so nobody can say I was finagled into it

That's why I usually just choose to gift things :P
Besides the government being mean though, how has your life been? Still working at that company you were working on monstrous SQL things?

@Tinkeringbell then the taxman considers it a gift and... reduces assistance...

11:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah well, I'm all for having a UBI but I'm also all for having rules and holding people to those. If the rule is stupid, the rule needs changing but it doesn't give you a right to just go breaking it, IMO XD

The rule is stupid...
also I thought the point of UBI is everyone gets that basic amount...

@Tinkeringbell yeah

I also kinda hate that at least over here, the government and society itself are actually encouraging an attitude of 'local initiatives'. In other words, the people that pay taxes to have social welfare, are also expected to provide healthcare for elderly neighbors, food for the foodbanks, and spend time and resources on countless other initiatives.

The problem I have isn't with means testing assistance. The problem I have is that the government fucks up their end of the bargain and doesn't pay out assistance anywhere close to in time (7 months late is not in time) and then punishes the receivers when they get help from their friends

That is what really makes me go 'dude, go tax facebook and amazon and don't bother me'.

11:34 AM
Why is the government not paying the interest for the time they delayed the payments by?

@Tinkeringbell honestly - making those megacompanies pay their fair share would go a long way

Also why are my tax euros paying people to go around and nickle and dime people who live below the poverty line

@JourneymanGeek Yes. Which is much better IMO than the current system over here. :P

Thats monstrous and evil and I don't appreciate they're spending my tax money on it

@magisch On the other hand, you'll have people arguing 'why is my tax money going to people living above the poverty line'... :/ The systems suck, especially since they don't take into account situations like this (where payments aren't made, which makes you drop way below the poverty line, but the gift you made is just added on top of the payments and putting them over the poverty line)

11:37 AM
tbh
Everyone getting assistance even if they cheat it clearly needs the money
even if someone is above the poverty line they're not living large off the extra 100€ in assistance they somehow got

@magisch needs or wants? :P

whatever
I don't care that someone gets a TV or a netflix subscription on my dime I do however care that actual poor people are harassed by beaurocrats paid by me
That pisses me off far more then any amount of welfare fraud

Yeah but that's the point where people start bickering... if someone *needs* it, they're usually happy to give it. If someone just *wants* it, the counterargument is easily 'well, I want some things I can't have too'.

And what is needed and what is just wanted... that really depends on who you ask

I personally think the whole debate is disasteful. You have wealthy idiots in suits arguing about if store brand cereal should be enough or if fresh veggies are extravagant
People who have never, and will never, know anything close to poverty

@magisch And it should. Dunno if it's been in the news over there too, but I heard it's got attention across borders... there's been this pretty huge scandal with the national tax service?
@magisch Hence why I prefer a UBI... money for everyone to determine what is needed and wanted for themselves, without those suits arguing about it ;)

11:42 AM
@Tinkeringbell and if you lose your job, you have an immediate safety net so you can afford to have food and a roof

That too.

It just stinks to me

Welcome to the world ;)
It has stinky cheese.

It pisses me off that the government takes more then half my income and then they can't even save families with young children from getting evicted
It pisses me off

There's good stuff in this world too! I finally have the keys of my apartment, it has a kitchen and a floor, and the wallpapering is coming along slowly :D

11:46 AM
hah

Furniture and bed will come next week, and I hope to be totally moving over around november 6th :D

my rent is still the same so i'm not considering buying an apartment at this time
I looked into it and my monthly payments would be substantially higher then current rent. Even just property taxes and upkeep would get close to or exceed my rent so I'll live here for as long as the rent is low

Yeah, makes sense then! Buying at this stage is probably not a good idea anyways, as house prices are up to ridiculous levels about anywhere from what I heard.

yeah it's crazy at the moment

I compared my expected monthly expenses with those of my brother (who's renting in a semi-big city) and I was going to spend 10-20 euros a month more than him XD
As long as his rent isn't being raised, he's also content just living where he's at.
(to be fair that probably only works out the way it does because he started renting that apartment before I bought mine, and hasn't had any rent increases 'yet'. If he would've had to start renting the same property now, it would probably be ridiculous)

11:57 AM
I havent had a rent increase in 6 years

I live with my parents, new place in 2023 :)

My Landlords are just an old couple who owns a lot of apartments around my town and they like having someone occupy one who pays on time better then not having any tenants

but that's roughly something I can pay off with no issue when i get it - its a studio apartment/public housing so its cheap

@magisch I think my brother is in a similar situation. Landlord prefers having him over raising rent, as he's also taking good care of the apartment and doesn't mind to do some DIY-ing himself (after discussing it with the landlord).

My landlords just had awful tenants before
It's pretty expensive to evict people in germany especially when those people are deliberately stalling the eviction process so someone who just pays on time is appreciated

12:03 PM
Yeah... evicting is always expensive, it seems.
@JourneymanGeek You're planning on paying off the whole thing, the moment you get it?!
Wow :)

@Tinkeringbell I am planning to be able to
I can take a loan (and have the arrangements made) but I'd like the option not to
Its also a really cheap apartment
Its the sorta thing old people downgrade to. Its also one of the few 'affordable' options for a single fella

@JourneymanGeek Hey, old people apartments aren't bad :P Mine is probably old-age proof too, and if I don't decide to move to the seaside once I retire, I will probably die there one day ;)

@Tinkeringbell I mean, as a new build, they literally have a 'special' trim package for old people
with assistive bars and stuff
is very much something similar

12:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek OMG, that's an old people place? I can't get past the first few seconds, that screamy child is so annoying already!

@JourneymanGeek I like the wooden shelves in the kitchen here :)

@Tinkeringbell honestly - the kitchen layout is probably something very similar to what I'd want

It's looking quite nice, I like how they incorporated the laundry machine.
Makes me wonder if I can just go order a bit of kitchen countertop at Ikea, and mount it over the one I'll be getting in the shower XD

lol
I am half temted to just ikea the whole kitchen
since Its the only place that needs work
unless I decided to splurge and get a proper wood floor

12:25 PM
I mean, from what I've heard, Ikea kitchens aren't that bad.
Just pay attention to the energy usage of the equipment you're getting, like the fridge. It can save you a lot of money ;)

ah
Oh, we have a rating system for that
and my AC is super efficient

Well, apparently my apartment, without me living there yet, is already consuming 2,5 kWh, not counting the heat pump (and I only have a fridge running which according to the label takes 0,74kWh a day, there's a small led display on the oven, the thermostat has a screen, and there's this internet access point that has a plug so that's using something too... I sincerely hope it's not the access point!)...
So it's either a mystery or the app is wrong. I'm going there this evening to take some numbers from the meter directly, and then I'll check again on Thursday morning. That should give some idea on whether I'm actually already using that much energy or not... next step would be to turn off the fridge and see if that makes any noticeable difference.

1:20 PM
I was thinking of sticking a power monitor when I set stuff up
Kinda curious about standby power and my more serious network gear 😅

Yeah, I might set up my own as well. Just to make sure.
I thought the app had stopped reporting, but now it's back to reporting 0.1kWh an hour used. Something isn't right. Setting up my own monitoring might actually get me answers XD

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Someone told me that in a comment on my post. Thanks though!

2:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell in case it interests you, the solution will most likely be that i sign an agreement not to sue in exchange for a small payment and then release a "new version" (really just an update to the license file) to make the whole thing cc0

@magisch Sounds good, right?

weirdly enough they insist on paying me a small amount because apparently if they paid me for releasing the potential claim then its harder to invalidate that later

@magisch 3.50?

Oh well. Just take it, gift it to charity if it's really bothering you ;)

I'd say 1 dollar but three fiddy is funnier

2:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell nah it doesnt bother me
i'm just glad someone else sorts out the details

Yeah, that's always easiest :)

1 hour later…
3:22 PM
Is there some way I can see when I upvoted an answer? Assume that it's edited recently and clicking on the button again will unupvote it.
(can't find one on stackapps either.)

@user202729 wouldn't the vote arrow be highlighted?

@JourneymanGeek I want to see when I upvoted it, not just whether I upvoted it

oh, when
no idea then

If the answer has not been edited then click the button again will show an error message
"you have upvoted on X"
Which is what I tend to do, but it doesn't work when there's an edit obviously
Probably can be queried with SEDE because it must be stored somewhere

upvotes won't be public information
so SEDE isn't an option

3:28 PM
No
I mean I upvote
Okay
It's still possible to see manually in the profile

3:44 PM
if you click the upvote button, it gives you a date if you can't undo the upvote indicating when the vote was cast.
Same for downvote, ofc
If it turns out you can change the vote, then the next way of checking would be to go to your profile, activity, votes, filter to upvotes, and find it there
given that the post would have an edit timestamp and a posted date, you could narrow down the date range

3:58 PM
@Tinkeringbell now you hopefully won’t have to ask as many questions on IPS anymore :)

4:51 PM
@V2Blast thank for the edit. Now, to make that perfect, you just need to post the missing 20 questions too :P

5:42 PM
quick check because I forgot: if an old FR was completed due to part of a major release, should it be answered or duplicate-voted? In this case the idea behind the feature request was explicitly noted as a new feature in the major release post.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

copyright scam, new DoS variant salesforce.stackexchange.com/a/360150

6:09 PM
@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica Haven't had anything I would want to ask about there for ages. It lacks good answerers so it's useless.

@Tinkeringbell didn’t you ask something on June 22nd?

That's an age ago

you age quickly

Looking at the frequency with which I used to post
@rene wonder who's fault that is

mine .... again ... ?

6:12 PM
My mom used to say that those to whom the statement is applicable would feel like they're being talked to soooo

She is right. Say hi to her from me.

@SPArcheon looks at wrist Oh hey, would you look at the time...

@V2Blast morming +-12 hours? edit: I can’t spell

@V2Blast 2AM!

1:21 pm for me, actually... I should eat some lunch.

6:21 PM
Also one of the few situations where a socially appropriate answer would be "NO U"

Philippe and V2Blast both are in the same time zone, interesting. [Insert conspiracy theory here]

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica Well- Only so many timezones in the US
(and all our current CMs are US or UK based)

@JourneymanGeek last time I checked US tied for second worldwide, with 11 time zones, and there are only 11 CMs, so my conspiracy theory isn’t completely nonsensical! (Only mostly nonsensical)

@rene She says hi back. Though she reminds me I'm not supposed to talk to strangers ;)

:D

7:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nicolas is a CM, so not quite all :P

I'm almost tempted to mod-abuse-edit that
(but I always forget one. At least @JNat's off the forgotten CM rota)

@JourneymanGeek you mean I used to be on your forgotten list...?

@JNat I am pretty sure I've forgotten once or twice

@JNat Who are you again?
:P

isn't that the question? ;P
I can guarantee I'm not a robot
at least I've historically been able to defeat the captchas thrown my way ;)

7:12 PM
@JNat exactly what a robot would say
I've not actually gotten a "are you human" captcha since my canine partner in crime passed on ._.

Aside from SEDE, the only time I get captchas on SE is when I leave a post overnight without submitting it.

@Mithical pretty sure I've had a few of those over the last 7 months

8:07 PM
Did anyone else have votes reversed in the last hour?

On MSE? No. I bribed someone so I got to keep mine.

@Mithical Way back when, Jeff implemented a 40-minute time limit for posts, after which one would be shown a CAPTCHA. This was supposed to have been removed in 2010, but that seems to have not happened.

8:23 PM
i haven't had any votes reversed

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I just had one upvote's worth of rep reversed in a "Voting corrected" event.

1 hour later…
9:39 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I got 3 serial upvotes reversed

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I had two reversed (both upvotes)
