@SmokeDetector so why wasn't it posted here?

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 There's a 5-minute delay before reports get posted here
Speaking of: should this delay be eliminated for reports of posts here on Meta?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog yes, this is one option. But it's weird, as the spam existed over 20 minutes before I reported, so someone else reported it elsewhere by chance?

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Yeah, another user manually reported it at the same time as you.

Then there's a 5-minute wait before an alert will be posted here
Star this if you think that for posts here on Meta, the 5-minute delay for SmokeDetector alerts should be removed

Or star this if you think the delay should be kept as not to flood the room.

Maybe a RO can pin them?

We're all alone ;)

Oh no, run!

David is here!
hmm sure there's already a feature request for adding option in our chat preferences "invisible mode" so that users won't show in the users list of a room when joining, until they post something.
Bet some people might not like the fact everyone see them enter the room. ;)

7:19 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog is that option available to select per site if you want a delay or not?

7:40 AM
Let's see if it's happening again...
lol
who is reporting in same time as me? @Sonic

8:03 AM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 @Shree did the first time; second time, it was caught by a filter
@Luuklag Just to be clear, the request I'll make, if any, will ask for the delay to be retained for reports from other sites.

8:46 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog You should probably answer rene's question first: Is that even technically possible already.

@Tinkeringbell I've asked about it in Charcoal HQ. I figured I'd start the discussion here since if it isn't possible in the current configuration directly but is possible with some minor code changes, a request to have it implemented or a PR that implements it would have greater chances of succeeding or being merged.

@Luuklag @EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica Thanks! The actual move isn't really scheduled yet, it depends a bit on how much progress we make with painting and putting up wallpaper and such... But hopefully, I can live there by the end of this month or the beginning of November :)
@Ollie I got six keys XD So losing one isn't too bad, right?!
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Meh. If it isn't possible yet, we should really first look at how much value it would have: Is there that much spam that would be removed faster if there wasn't a delay for posting it in this room? The answer would probably end up being 'no', and the developer effort can then better be put into other venues.
WSJF and such...

It's been my experience that spam on MSE is frequently killed in a few seconds, it's very difficult to manually flag as it's deleted out from under the flagging dialog faster than one can flag; rarely it lasts a few minutes.

11:45 AM
@Rob seconds is very rare. In my experience average is few minutes, and many times (like today, twice) it stays well over 20 minutes. Record as far as I remember is spam lasting for several hours.
Nothing fatal; but if we can nuke it faster, it would be better.
Anyway looks like @Sonic idea is nuked. :(
!!/comfort Sonic

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 No such command 'comfort'.

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 You need to post links, or increase your experience by several times.

I nuked that in 17 seconds and someone still managed to flag it before me :P
Apr 12 at 11:53, by Tinkeringbell
Nah, I've managed 6-8 seconds at times ;)

12:22 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog A short delay is nice to have as it gives normal meta users a realistic chance to also participate in the curation of the site, which should be a good for users engagement with the site

Rob
1:15 PM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Since Feb 5th 2021 only one Charcoal member is being notified about spam on MSE; others responding to reports are reading the chat manually, and frequently there is fewer than the 6 required for deletion.

1:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell but then you’ll no longer have 6-8 keys :P

2:56 PM
@Rob three in half year is exactly what I said: rare. :)

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 What, you want me to brag about every spam post I delete, and spammer I destroy, just so you have data?

@Tinkeringbell write down and give me monthly report.
:-D
sending letter to Tink's boss asking to recruit her for a full time job as Spam Reporter

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Yeah no... I'm not going to do administration :P You write me a script and I might run it once in awhile :P

hmm now that's a challenge. :P
Where are Shog's tools when we need them? ;)

Safely locked up, I hope!

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 That's a good thing! Those tools aren't supposed to be just lying around for everyone to find!

She sounds like a smart one.

Yay... another day, another annoyance, just what I needed.
Wi-fi 4g modem access point received an SMS with a verification code for registering an app I don't use. Probably just noise from some idiot who mistyped their sim number, but since the connection was quite laggy lately... I just won some free paranoia.

@Tinkeringbell Six!?
Did it say 6-8 in the paperwork?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Why? If you want to catch Meta-only posts (immediately), you can use the sdc notify SD command in Charcoal.

stroopwafels
@Ollie I'm not always in Charcoal HQ, so if there's a spam post during a time when I'm not there, there'll be a 15-minute delay before the chat ping results in a site notification. (And I don't wish to change the setting in my chat profile to remove this delay.)
On the other hand, I'm in this room way more often, and 5 minutes is shorter than 15 minutes

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Yes, you will be notified for that site in that room.

@Catija I've seen you close a lot of blatantly off-topic questions on MSE, but you never delete them. Why?

The comments users leave don't remain in people's inboxes if the post is deleted, so by not deleting them, there's a bigger likelihood that the user will actually see the comment and realize they're in the wrong place.
If there is no comment from someone, I leave it so that someone can leave one.

That's a double-edged sword though. By not deleting them, there's more stuff to clean up (especially on the weekend). Anyways, they'll see that their question has been deleted and will wonder why. Then they'll see the comment under their question.

Why would they see their question has been deleted? We don't tell people if their questions are deleted.
Off topic questions do not need to be deleted urgently. It's an odd behavior that MSE people have that doesn't exist pretty much anywhere else on the network.

9:55 PM
@Catija reputation changes (if they have any), seeing that it's not under their "Questions" tab, etc.
@Catija I guess...

Those are things that only expert users on the platform would know to look for.

OK, fair point.

A comment sitting in their inbox that clearly says "This is off topic here - here's some help to a resource for figuring out where your question may be asked" is something pretty much anyone can understand.

@Ollie The inbox notification of the comment is cleared if the question is deleted.
Notifications of activity on deleted posts only persist if you've viewed them in the past, IIRC.

I'm guessing that Ollie means that if they visit the deleted question from one of those other spaces, they'll then see the comment.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Comments left by a mod five minutes or less prior to deletion or after it will remain in inboxes, too.

10:02 PM
@Sonic That one ^^
@Catija To be fair, there are quite a few pings on SO as well. Although SO is a gigantic site...

@Catija So, then, why not leave a comment yourself, if you're concerned about comment notifications being cleared from inboxes?

Because I'm usually closing them on my phone and I don't have the time or access to a script to leave a comment - also, half the time a comment already exists and ... again... deleting isn't necessary.
I also feel like I'm getting a bit harangued about this. I'm doing something in my free time that's saving people some work. I'm not deleting for a reason I've already explained and not deleting isn't making more work - it's just neutral. If I hadn't closed it, y'all would still be wanting to delete it, it seems.

@Catija Sorry. It wasn't my intention to bother/accuse, I asked out of curiosity. It just seemed a little funny relative to the other MSE 20Ks and diamond mods.

@Catija I think Ollie was just asking why you don't do the same thing as @JourneymanGeek and @Tinkeringbell, whose preference is to delete immediately after closing and commenting. Given your comments above, would you like for them to stop?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog You're the one pushing even more into why I'm not doing things the way you want me to. Ollie seems to have accepted my explanation for how I act. I'm not going to push anyone to change their behaviors - If they want to delete immediately, that's fine. I just want to help out where and how I can.

10:12 PM
Regarding my previous comment above: for a second I thought your key concern was about the inbox notification disappearing, to which I suggested that leaving a comment yourself would solve that concern. I didn't fully read the previous messages at that time

Slowing down to get context is often valuable when you jump into a conversation.

I noticed that in the announcement about the CM escalation queue dropping to zero, Rosie says "A zero inbox on CM escalations is not something that I’ve seen in the 7+ months I’ve been on the team". For those CMs who have been around longer than Rosie (JNat, Catija, any other CMs to whom this applies), have you seen an empty CM escalation queue while working at SE? If so, when was the last time (before Sep 24th), if you can remember?

@cairdcoinheringaahing not a CM but the team was working on an increasingly lean headcount - to the point where we actually avoided pinging or raising tickets unless necessary and it generally took weeks or months. + We never got replies of there wasn't a need to take action....
So probably years

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I was sort of thinking of those times :P I can't have imagined that, for a long time, the CM queue was empty (or even close to it), but I thought I'd ask, just in case any of the CMs (or, for that matter, any SE employee) knows of a time. Just for my own insatiable interest in the goings-on of SE :P

Also miiiiight be worth asking on meta

TL;DR: the CM team will be working exclusively on moderator escalations for this week and next week
