When I view Kevin Montrose’s profile page, it shows him with a diamond on the “communities” sidebar but doesn’t have the moderator tag on his profile page. Is this happening to anybody else, or is this just something weird going on with my device?

3:05 AM
@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica I'm gonna blame caching and guess that you just discovered he quit (or that his diamond was removed for unrelated reasons like testing or something). The profile diamond is cached separately from the communities sidebar diamond, so I'd expect it to propagate shortly.

3:41 AM
@RyanM Well, I apparently stand corrected: it's still only in the sidebar and the network profile. It's not on the main profile or in the usercard on posts.

Rob
On SO's main he's listed as the "Developer & Team Lead at Stack Overflow" in the special Title Field - ironically his top answer (by far) is about caching; so he's qualified to answer for his own destiny.

haha

An address for a hospital ^ that really instills trust:
> "Address- Plot №6, Next lane to Vijay Sales, Bhd Kataria Automobiles, Off Gaurav Path, Piplod, Surat — 395007"
Get IVF on the way in and pick up an automobile on the way out.

Nitro-powered ambulances? Sounds good!

Q: Can someone kick the diamond cache on Kevin Montrose's profile

LuuklagIt appears that valued associate 000004 is no longer with the SE team. I don't know exactly when he left, but according to the wayback machine it was somewhere between may 7th and july 14th. However he still has his diamond in the sidebar of his profile: Can someone kick the cache, as it has bee...

8:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek, regarding people leaving, my theory is that it has to do with the acquisition. People being able to trade in their stock options now ;)
+ not wanting to await what changes in management might bring

9:00 AM
@RyanM yup, exactly that, new millionaires
why work a 9-5 job if you don't need to, and can do the things you really love

@Luuklag that makes a lot of sense

1 hour later…
10:37 AM
@Luuklag I'd say boredom :D
If I had enough money that I didn't need to work for the rest of my life, I still might, just to keep my brains from going to much, and hypothetical mrs geek from justifiably killing me

11:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek Technically though, you don't need a 9-5 job to kill boredom :P
I certainly wouldn't be working 40 hours a week, if I didn't need to work for the rest of my life. A few days of volunteering somewhere probably (not 9-5 either) and the rest I could spend crafting... I might even start selling stuff on Etsy or something if I had that much time XD
Then again... even a single million makes someone a millionaire, and that's probably not enough to never have to work a single day again XD

@Tinkeringbell selling stuff on Etsy sounds an awfull lot like working

Rob
True, someone with a million is only a millionaire if they don't spend any money; or have a good sized income. You need to be a billionaire to be able to blow some money and still have plenty remaining; of course that excludes locked in.

11:48 AM
@Luuklag Oh... Yes and no. Some people make that their job, it's true... I was more thinking of just selling stuff to make back some money to buy materials for new projects... Which does come with a bit of overhead like posting it there first and shipping it, but if I don't have to work anymore, I do have time for that and will probably still have extra time to craft :P

Rob
12:33 PM
A millionaire is like a millihelen, enough to launch one ship.

@Tinkeringbell didn't say 9 to 5 😁

@JourneymanGeek You replied to a question that asked 'why work 9-5 if you don't need to?' XD

12:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell work in general 🤣

1:08 PM
@Luuklag If you're going to share songs about sex work, I still prefer this one :P

@Tinkeringbell Meh, all I know is that she sings work a bunch of times

@Luuklag That's most of her songs yeah XD
Same word repeated too many times.

@Tinkeringbell But i prefer this one then: youtu.be/3T1c7GkzRQQ

Ah yeah, that one is not too bad either :D

@Feeds oneboxing is dead

Rob
@Tinkeringbell How about this NSFW Rihanna video: Valerian and the City - Bubble's Dance - she doesn't speak at all.

@Rob If she doesn't it's the best one yet, without even having watched it :D

Rob
It's an odd video, probably unusual to watch

1:40 PM
@Rob blocked for me due to IP claim
Meh isnt it supposed to onebox?
Or was that turned off after the great hack?

Rob
@Luuklag Try searching for the words highlighted in the link, there are many 1000s of copies of that few minutes of that film. Just Valerian Rihanna is probably enough.

@Rob She does know how to dance, I have to give her that
haha there is a montage glitch in there
When she whips the drink out of the guys hand, you see the umbrella has flown out
the next second the guy puts his drink down, its full again and has an umbrella

1:59 PM
@Luuklag Oneboxes are broken/turned off, but I don't think it was related to any hack? :D Anyways... is he really getting paid to do that?! I want a job like that then too! :P

@Tinkeringbell I thought they were turned off as a security risk, due to the way the twitter API works, that they found out after the hack.

The Twitter oneboxes used the same path that was used for an infiltration, yes.

Oh, okay.
TIL

@Luuklag and it was easier than turn it off than fix it since chat isn't really in active development

Rob
@Luuklag Haha, never really noticed. - The word you are looking for is continuity, montage is different; not the best page but it explains the two: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuity_editing

2:19 PM
@Rob good to know.

2:41 PM
@Spevacus done

Rob
2:52 PM
@Ollie, that comment shows up in the SmokeDetector records, see: metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/323863 - you'll want to delete it and refrain from doing that, if you wish to retain that permission and avoid being blocked.

Is there a faq or what to know before chstting here?
Chatting*

Not really. Chat is supposed to be pretty informal, but: a.) the Code of Conduct still applies b.) take your cues from other people.

@JcbJoe there is the /faq page on the chat servers.

So... hello!
@Ollie which I don't think has been touched in 11 years...

@Mithical neither has chat...

Rob
3:00 PM

Ok

Like, I'm perfectly aware that page exists, but most of it is basically outdated at this point and so isn't very helpful, which is why I didn't link to it.

@Mithical fair point, OK.

@Mithical .... I think chat got touched over the last 11 years. Least as long as balpha was around, there were at least bugfixen and one dev was at least advocating for an API .-.

there's been some changes recently

3:11 PM
Ok, I have a question. I have about 145 rep and kind of figured out from some questions and just reading a lot about this site compared to other sites. This place means business. My question is can you appeal blocks or bans?
If so, is it frowned upon, or should I take it as an example and learn from it?

@JcbJoe Uh, bad idea

the block is automatic, it can't be undone other than by improving your contributions

Firstly, for question and answer bans - there's nothing a mod can do anyway, other than advice you, and that's best done on the site
Appealing suspensions is best done via the contact us link

Got it
It's an edit block. I thought meta wanted grammar edits but I guess not

@JcbJoe Ah, suggested edits?

3:14 PM
yea

It'll get unblocked eventually

@JourneymanGeek Chat has been, but not the FAQ page, which is precisely my point.

Yep 7 days. Trying to earn that rep lol

@JcbJoe hmm
Meta's the 'hardest' site in some ways
because a lot of it is about 'understanding' the SE ways of doing things, and communicating things like feature requests

@JcbJoe Well I took at a look at the rejected ones and... you're not improving the grammar at all?

3:16 PM
My advice is take it slow.

just wait till winter bash and answer all of the frivolous posts it spawns.

/me smacks @KevinB with a rolled up newspaper

I need 200 so I can get the associate bonus. Tired of being the noob

You're actually introducing errors into posts instead! meta.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/79269 for example: There is no 'instead of showing no biography' at all.

3:17 PM
@JcbJoe Ah, so you're kinda doing it wrong if you think about it

@JourneymanGeek why is it always a rolled-up newspaper? Is that, like, one of the mod punishment tools?

ok

What's wrong with the chat faq?

Rob
🗞️

@Ollie Tradition. In memory of doggos of the past, none of whom were ever actually smacked with a rolled up newspaper...

3:18 PM
Maybe that should be one of the 30K privileges.

imagine having newspaper you could roll up

.....
Imagine?

You can, cantcha?

@JourneymanGeek thanks I'll take it slow

@JcbJoe In a sense - meta rep also reflects expertise in the SE system as a whole... so...
having this to be your first site to get over 200, and getting the association rep off there is unusual

3:20 PM
i have reusable bags that i can roll up instead

Rob

You might have an easier time starting on another site, and learning the mechanics to apply here
@Ollie @KevinB - We buy newspapers :D

Rob
30K Privilege

like dead tree newspaper

Ok

3:21 PM
@JourneymanGeek magazines?

@Rob AACK! it's a GIF!

Thanks all

Rob
✔️

@Ollie actual. newspaper
Its thinner than it used to be, but its still a newspaper

@Rob Am I missing something with this suggested edit? Does it really need a spam/vandalism rejection?

3:26 PM
the gas stations/stores i frequent don't even carry them

1 hour later…
4:54 PM

@FourierPikachu brews a cup of Cappuccino for @FourierPikachu

Rob
@Ollie Yes, you are missing something; and I thought "Ollie, argh", but didn't bring it up because you frequently don't reply. Clicking on the link you provided offers a sufficient answer, doesn't it?

5:18 PM
Hi all I have another question. Does doin go a search and getting results get better with time or are there some techniques I could use. Example I just asked another question on a site spent 5 mins researching it via Google and internal search and it still got closed it was a duplicate What’s going on?
I actually searched for a question and answer before I posted the question

@JcbJoe did you use google / bing / duck duck go?

@rene I used internal search like in:q or is:a then a google search

it is better to use an external search engine first. SE search only works well if you know what you're looking for.
@JcbJoe 5 minutes is way too short to go from search to ask question. I spend an hour at least for simple issues, up to days for more complex stuff.

5:35 PM
Wow that’s a lot of time. Do you word the question different or just try little things? Also I use site:name.exchange.com keyword

well, it depends on the question
programming related things for example can be broken down into smaller pieces
Not so much for, say, english language related questions or politics

I always start in Google, try a few keywords, read the results, consider synonyms, try to search for those as well. Open tabs on all results as needed, try to find several resources, hopefully ones from well known sources, official docs, etc

5:54 PM
Ok

6:23 PM
umm why chat textarea got black border??

mine has a white border
or, grey, to be more specific, #bdbdbd

private rooms have a similar border in red, not sure if that's connected

i see a red border on mod rooms i'm invited to
hmm
i misread your message
carry on

Rob
6:42 PM
@Glo, would retirement of a queue invalidate its reviews?

@Rob probably, but the First Posts queue will only disappear after all items have been dequeued. Yaakov told me that on one of my posts...

Rob
OK, thanks.
@Glorfindel It has now disappeared, of course I can't see the cause; dequeued (reviewed) or some other reason.
It does get a Notification Badge before it goes:

askubuntu.com/review/first-posts says no posts to review. I don't think any review items have been invalidated (the example on Meta.SE was posted 2 months ago).

I found a question that was a duplicate of what i want to do. i understand it but i have questions about it. do i go ahead and ask another question about it and get it flagged or can i ping a moderator to help me with a question about said duplicate question?
i found the answer

7:03 PM
@JcbJoe doesn't this FAQ post has guidance on that: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/10841/… ?

7:16 PM
@rene the question I had was can I unjoin a community and join later I found meta.stackexchange.com/questions/261744/… Which was a duplicate of this meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5999/… the question got answered but I had a question about the answer even thought it was 6 years old. I found the answer in another post

Rob
7:43 PM
@Glorfindel Checking everywhere I have Mod Tools says: "Aug 26 at 19:09" is the most recent review (would have thought one of these would have had one First Post): astronomy.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/history quantumcomputing.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/history space.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/history or.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/history and amusingly: meta.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/history
from 2012, and when you switch tabs to the queue it's 404; but at least the History was preserved.
[one First Post, more recently]

Rob
For which I have no Tools. 😳
No, it's 404 for me on the other tab: meta.stackoverflow.com/review/first-posts (first, not "History").

@Rob for me too.

Rob
@Glorfindel It lets me in to "Stats", but says no one has ever reviewed:

Curious as to this: Have noticed lately that if I add for example 3 lines and use up/down arrow it is very hard to land on the middle line. It is very frustrating in the moment as I can not add a new paragraph between two others without doing a big dance with adding lines, deleting lines text, etc.
I.e. If I use down arrow from line 1. it land on line 3. If I use up arrow on line 3 I land on line 1.
Thought the edit area was simply treated as a html textarea. Is there some JS jumble going on here?

7:59 PM
in the markdown editor? or the alpha editor

markdown

i've never seen that in the markdown editor
it's, just a textarea

Rob
@Glorfindel We had the wrong URL: stackoverflow.com/review/first-posts/history - and this is part of the answer: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/411104/… - apparently the last review was not particularly recent, perhaps the queue was retired well before it was announced (during the prior Announcement).
(2021-08-30)
@rene is indeed right. Posts more than 14 days old were not eligible for the first posts queue. — animuson ♦ 9 mins ago

@KevinB Yes, that was what I thought, but again wondered if there perhaps was something form the horrendous (no offense intended, but personal opinion 😅) alpha thing bleeding trough.
Have not bothered debugging it in dev-tools as I thought it might be a common thing.

i haven't tested teh alpha editor, but my past experience dealing with "rich" text editors makes me quite apprehensive about the idea of SO moving to one.
but i guess we're in a state now where browser compatibility isn't anywhere near as bad as it was in the past

8:12 PM
@KevinB I like the idea of a rich markdown editor a lot more than the typical rich text editors that output HTML
and if you target "normal" people you need WYSIWYG and not Markdown

"normal" people are just as capable of learning as anyone else

For me it is more a control and fine-tuning thing + that it works very well. All OK for newbies, but from my experience people learn from the start or one comment or two. The rich editor thing is a Frontpage resurrection. Any human able to compose a question is able to learn the simple markdown. It does not take much.

@KevinB I think you dramatically underestimate how foreign the concept of a markup language is to most people.

i promise, i'm not, i'm not saying people will generally understand it.

Very simply stuff like the two linebreaks to create a paragraph seriously confuses even clever people. And that was among people that are actually somewhat comfortable with using Markdown in the first place.

8:17 PM
It's not markup but markdown btw.

@user3342816 Markdown is a type of markup language ;-)

bsides, the common keybinds and buttons rich text editors have exist in our markdown editor, ;)

With markup I think of things like HTML and XML, markdown I think of things like * for bullet-point. I might be wrong

I'd love to be able to put plain Markdown in front of users. But I don't think this will work and it's just far too much of a barrier compared to a Markdown WYSIWYG editor or a "real" HTML WYSIWYG editor

switching to a RTE is simply a move to ease the onboarding of paying customers
For public Q&A, there's always someone there to help you edit your post into shape, that's not true of private teams

8:25 PM
@Rob no, it didn't. Sorry about that. But do ping me if I approve a bad edit (that other reviewers also consider bad), I'll pay more attention.
and to what I review...

Rob
Well, that's 2 against 1.

@Rob s'why it takes 2 to approve an edit, I guess.

Rob
or reject. Don't worry sometimes I feel I am correct and two other reviewers disagree; thus it make me look wrong. But I stand behind my reviews and correct whatever I can if an error is correctly pointed out; which hasn't been a handful of times.
or this time.
