@KevinB I've always been skepical of it, more so cause, well "Jobs isn't doing as well as it should, we need to downsize people" ...
twice...
Its a crowded market to boot

In the second lesson of the series, we’ll add state to our quiz app so that it can show users whether they answered correctly.  We’ll also build out a model for our quiz questions, and add a settings tab. Here are some Stack Overflow questions related to the work we did in today’s session: What…

eh, that's a loaded word
I mean, at some point people might want a new job, or to do something different right?
and I'm pretty sure 6 months ago, no one would have even told us ._.

What does 'modraters' mean?

It's a typo of "moderators" (or, it's someone who.. rates mods I guess). The moderators are users, such as Journeyman Geek, who handle the moderation of SE sites that can't be done by the community (most typically, flags)

Hmm
I saw a meme on a moderator's gravatar with a bunch of typos.
> modraters are just monkeys who has guns in there hands.

4:57 PM
I think that's intentional
@Dudecoinheringaahing .... You're a mod too... :D

@JourneymanGeek ...did someone give me a diamond without me noticing? :P

@Dudecoinheringaahing Its 1 am and I'm working and your dog has a mod hat and...

@JourneymanGeek That's the SE hat from Winter Bash a couple years back, saved as a photo :P
It's not an IRL hat :P

Easy thing to miss, especially if you aren't looking very closely :P

5:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek How are moderators 'monkeys with gun' ?

@Wolgwang well, basically folks with powers beyond their ability to use intellegently

We all know about the "Turn all users' hair ginger" button on the mod dashboard for example. Still not sure why they added that... :P

@Dudecoinheringaahing Really??

@Wolgwang No, it was a bad joke :P

:-D

5:12 PM
@Wolgwang No, we do have a "turn milk sour" button...
We don't have a "mail user a bobcat" button tho. We really don't. Absolutely no such button, nuh huh

@JourneymanGeek That explains the snarling, shaking package I just got delivered from someone named "Totally not an SE moderator"

Oh we arn't allowed to mail bobcats to users any more.
I'm pretty sure they've never let us mail bobcats to users from before I became a mod too...

I take it you can't get a SE themed bobcat as swag then :(

Nothing is impossible... You can always let someone else make it :P

@JourneymanGeek Really? -_-

5:18 PM
@Wolgwang Would I lie about such a thing?
@Dudecoinheringaahing tbh, the bobcat is pretty much a personal joke
SE is more of a unicorn place
@JourneymanGeek stolen from XKCD too

5:37 PM
@Dudecoinheringaahing That was a box of squirrels, not a bobcat.

5:49 PM

@JourneymanGeek there are a few factors: 1) Pandemic may have kept people in place artificially who would have otherwise made a move. 2) It's an industry-wide trend - "the Great Resignation". 3). The Prosus Acquisition - folks are exercising options, they held on for a bit longer because of the acquisition. 4) The general turnover of people moving on and up.
All in all, this isn't at all a surprise. Anyone who's spent significant time in a tech company that's acquired has likely seen the same sort of dynamics. (as you have, I know.)

@Philippe tbh, many of the previous moves of folks that I felt strongly about were...uh...
involuntary?

I'm not touching that. Because I wasn't born yesterday :)

Oh, I can say it.
In Both Nick and Brian's case.. they're good folks and would do awesome anywhere
and have been here somewhat longer than most tech folks stick around.

Superbly qualified, yep.

5:58 PM
And since I stalk nick on twitter, I was kinda getting the idea he was setting stuff up so the place would survive past him.. always a good idea so...
I'm not that surprised

Any manager who isn't always thinking succession planning isn't worth their salt. :)
There's the bus factor to consider, after all.

Or is obsessed with their own job security ;)

Fair.

Well or mod

@JourneymanGeek willingly? Nick, Brian, who else?

5:59 PM
I could get hit by a bus tommorrow, and both my sites would be fine ;)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 that's enough no ?

Well, Sara. :)

@JourneymanGeek poor bus

@Philippe I'm not touching that

@Philippe thought he was talking about devs

Also not born yesterday?
He is. I was trolling.

6:00 PM
@Philippe Bit of that, bit of raw memories.

@JourneymanGeek sure, but no exodus here, i.e. don't think it's due to something boiling under the surface.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 not me who said that ;)

One thing I can think of, is change of contract due to the acquisition, so old time devs losing some... stuff.
@JourneymanGeek but I can see the word in your mind. :P

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 as I said, I wasn't that suprised by Nick, there was an undercurrent of preparing to hand things over
Brian, I don't know that well
(well I don't know Nick either. The one SRE I knew in community left the company some time back)

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Nope, not to my knowledge.

6:08 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Nick was here for... a decade...
that's a long time for someone in a tech company

@JourneymanGeek ; can confirm. Source: Did 7 and a half years once, and was a dinosaur.

and I'd say - "I want to do something new' and being able to do it is... something that should be a source of joy :D

Is this an easter egg of the site? I have got this several times while uploading images from the URL of the form encryptedttbn0.gstatic.com.... on chat.

Have never seen it before.
Could be. Wouldn't put it past balpha :p

@JourneymanGeek :(
@JourneymanGeek :)

6:21 PM
(also, 3 answers on Philippe's question . I'll stop now)

@Wolgwang let me try....

@JourneymanGeek Blegh... just pick one! :P

6:23 PM
lol
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I am trying to reproduce it here. Maybe I will note the URL next time :-/

maybe gstatic easter egg

@JourneymanGeek First thing flashing through my mind: the fifth of november.

6:29 PM
lol
I suspect if you posted that as an answer, people would be monumentally confused

Heh. I guess if I just posted:
> Remember, remember the fifth of November,
gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason why gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.

@Tinkeringbell 5th of November?

People would draw their own conclusions and it would gather quite a bit of votes in the process XD

> "REMEMBER, remember the Fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot
Guy Faulks! I suspect picked it up from V for Vendetta tho

I don't know where I picked it up, probably when looking up a meme.

6:38 PM
@Tinkeringbell But do you remember, the 21st night of September?

Solstice?

I am unable to find anything related to the 5th of November.🙄

Wow. Just copy the quote I just quoted.

Ok got it :-D

6:43 PM
@Dudecoinheringaahing Oooh darn. I know the song, but not that part of the lyrics :P
There's also... remember me :P
But we should certainly remember the 21 of September. According to the Dutch Wikipedia page, that's when 'The Hobbit' was published :D
