@Catija Since you're staff, can you recalculate my MSE reputation? After being unsuspended, I haven't been given reputation for posts I know were upvoted.

I don't have that ability

@Catija Who does?

Rob
12:56 AM
Looks like it works: meta.stackexchange.com/users/368934/anonymous?tab=reputation - tested, it goes up and down.

1 hour later…
2:12 AM
Now that SE will be owned by somebody else Monica might get restated

2:25 AM
*reinstated
@EkadhSingh Its still very complicated.

Okay :)

I mean SE company culture changes aside. Not everyone might agree on her coming back - and its been a long time and the wounds are still raw for many.
So it'll need some diplomacy, and (eww) dealing with legal and actually being able to communicate with the folks involved

That’s what the strike through was for :P

Which is a bit impolite if you know its hard ._.

Sorry. My bad

2:53 AM
It's been almost two years. I'm not saying people should move on but... thinking that anything is going to change seems a bit... unlikely.

And healing dosen't necessarily means "turning back the clock"

I think that's OK. For us it's like a scar. A memory of a time we got burned so that we can avoid making that again. It may fade over time but it'll likely still be there, a pale ghost that catches our eye and gives us pause.

Well for everyone involved.

Sure.
I don't actually know whether I meant the company when I said "us" or... everyone.

Well the people certainly
But I also think for the folks involved healing can be different things

3:13 AM
It can. For some people it's less of a surface wound like a burn and more like a deep slash or even an amputation. A feeling of deep need to protect yourself from future similar harm or an ache that never goes away and haunts you, impacting how you interact with others.
I nearly lost the tip of one of my pinky fingers when I was 8 or 9... a door closed on it and it was holding on by only a tiny piece of skin. They sewed it on in the ER and, while my nail is a bit funky, it's hard to really see there's anything wrong at a glance. But there are times I recoil from closing doors - it's just an involuntary action. I will over react when my kids are near doors that are closing.

and well, what you want, and what you need can be different

30 years hasn't really relaxed me. It's why I couldn't own a dog - two bites to the face as a kid, one requiring stitches and one to the arm... I can't be comfortable around them. I like them, I'll pet them but the second they act threateningly, I recoil and look for a way away from them.
@JourneymanGeek How do you mean?
As in the song?

lol
there's a song?

ah lol

3:22 AM
Wow, that's a long song.

3:52 AM
@Catija my cousin's late wife used to be afraid of dogs...
I think Ash had her wrapped around his paw in half an hour :D
@Catija that's a reasonable fear
unless you're good at reading dog body language

Yeah, I think the fear started too soon... The first one was when I was in that same 8-9 age range. 11 stitches, I think, just below my eye. I remember the surgeon saying that I was lucky the dog didn't bite higher. All small dogs. :P My mom had a giant schnauzer. She was dopey and floppy and just wanted to chase sheep all the time. She was great.

lol. I've seen one, she's sweet.
Ash bit someone... once... he deserved it :D

I'm sure in the dogs' minds, I deserved it... I was never threatening them but I can imagine them feeling that I was in their space. The first one, I made the mistake of playing with their (empty) food dish.
The second, I was just walking through their backyard (with the owner) ... min pin, I think. Just jumped up in the air and bit through my upper lip.

oh, someone was teasing ash for weeks about my brother and dad being away...

The last, when I was in high school... walking down a street and a (young) blue heeler pup saw me wave and smile (our neighbors had had heelers) and jumped half over the white picket fence to bite my arm.

3:58 AM
Ash ran out of patience and bit him

How was he teasing Ash about that?
That seems odd.

"look there granddad is back!"
.... and ash would look
Until one day... uh...
:D

... ah, yeah, that's mean.

no jury would convict Ash for that

4:01 AM
Not at all. That's totally warranted.

yup
and I kept warning the fella :D

7:52 AM
@Luuklag :waves: hi. Thank God, doing pretty well.

@ThomasWard I never thought of using compressed air to do that...(and I use that all the time for electronics and dust cleaning). Thanks will try that :D

uh, actual compressed air

@Rob Thanks for the post, will take a look :)

NOT a air duster can

@JourneymanGeek LOL yeah Ik

7:58 AM
which is a hydrocarbon with a bittering agent

@JourneymanGeek yeah, can also tell by the smell too

@YaakovEllis good to hear. I haven't heard much about rockets in Israel lately, have things calmed down?

Yeah, the cease-fire has held (though no one is under the impression that it is anything but a hold on hostilities and that they will restart again in the future), so all quiet on that front.

Yeah, it seams like the ever continuing spiral. I don't think it will ever end before some sort of "permanent" deal is struck between Israel and the Palestines.

@Luuklag an actually permanent deal would be... something to be proud of
but probably almost implausible (and I would be glad to be proven wrong)

8:01 AM
And something I'm afraid I won't see come done in my lifetime

@JourneymanGeek what, you don't like your coffee extra-bitter?

@RyanM you do? :o
(don't know if this was sarcasm which is why I ask)

I prefer my coffee in espresso-based form. I actually can't make coffee at home, so I haven't had any since the pandemic (unless you count Frappucinos, which...I don't)
It was in fact sarcasm, I don't think bittering agents are good for flavoring coffee ^^;

@RyanM Sounds like you need to order a coffee maker

I mostly drink tea :-)

8:06 AM
@RyanM yeah, wanted to make sure because I know some who like bitter things...so you know? wouldn't surprise me if someone liked that and such
I never yet met someone who like bitter coffee though

That's fair...I actually do like bitter things, but though I don't drink coffee, I'm inclined to agree that "bitter" isn't a good flavor in coffee.

I promise I don't use my air duster cans to flavor anything I eat, just to clean various things around my apartment

@RyanM Tea is for people that are ill ;)

I don't like tea :D
I am ok with coffee but I do 1 a day
I'm wierdly picky over my water

8:14 AM
I drink a gallon or so of coffee a day ;)

I used to drink more
but I cut back when I was dealing with insomnia/anxiety

@JourneymanGeek It's not helped by the prevalence of the "we just need to hit them hard enough and they'll stop" mentality, which is definitely something I've heard floating around here in the IDF.

@Mithical that's very... military
And well, it generally tends to work. Just the whole thing with collateral damage.
"War is diplomacy by other means"
it is rare to think about winning a conflict before it turns into a conflict
Strangely enough, the brits managed it in malaya during the emergency, though it fit in well with their pattern of divide and rule

Congratulations @rene and @Glorfindel for becoming Stack Apps moderators!
19

@Mithical hitting them, stopping them from hitting you, and peacefully getting rid of their support base is kinda the 3 things that might work...
the last bit...

8:23 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog rene with a diamond? Prepare for sparkly snark...

@JourneymanGeek that last bit would be the only bit. Hitting them only makes them more determined to hit you, in any conflict. This one especially as I get the feeling the palestinians see hitting Israel with missiles as their only option to be heard internationally. As soon as the missiles stop, people no longer look out form them they feel.

There's politics and posturing and history and religion, and the civilians end up paying the price.

@Luuklag there's always going to be that hard core

@Mithical unfortunately yes.
@JourneymanGeek True, but if they become a tiny minority they will be moderated by their peers.
Today I love working from home. No-one notices you're wearing shorts
Is it true btw that StackApps has no meta site?

8:36 AM
Right

@Luuklag well. 1) He's still PM until the change is officially complete, can take up to 12 days according to our laws. 2) The new PM is... not someone I like at all, and got only 7 out of 120 seats on own "senate", i.e. only few people actually voted for him. It's a very rare situation, and I'm afraid he's not ready/good for the role.

@Luuklag Technically, you already use it as a kinda of meta site, since people can discuss apps other make and such...
at least that's the impression i had

Problem is, so many people just hate our current PM, personally, that they let such thing happen.
Anyway, let's all wish for the best. :D

Stack Apps operates as its own meta site, much like MSE does.

@Mithical does it even have a moderator?

8:38 AM
I see. I guess the impression I had was on point

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Rene and Glorfindel, And I think there was a pre-existing one

16 mins ago, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
Congratulations @rene and @Glorfindel for becoming Stack Apps moderators!

@Rob that second one sounds like cooking.SE but with extra step
not sure about the first one

@Luuklag really?? That's new to me. Nice!

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Really, it's new to them, too ;-)

8:47 AM
There was always Tim Stone, but as far as I know he became too busy to be able to moderate.

9:29 AM
not that there are a ton of flags to handle on that site.

@rene that's surprising. I thought the site was pretty small compared to other SE/or SO
(mainly comparing the size of the data dump when saying this)

isn't that what I said? It is small was what I meant to say. Sorry if that was confusing

@rene oh, my bad. Thought you meant there was a ton of flag (didn't saw the not part the start of the sentence)

(I read it the way you intended it)

And just to make it clear, despite the extra mods now, the flag queue is not empty yet.

9:42 AM
congrats, blurry mod :D

thanks

@rene What are you doing chatting here then?

@rene btw, do you use the data dump that are on Archive.org? just curious (had a couple question to someone who would be used to it)

Meh, flags can wait :P
If you handle them too fast, people will just raise more flags anyways :P

9:45 AM
@Tinkeringbell I mean, i recall there was less activity on stackapp, but maybe I'm wrong
I think even the android.meta SE have more activity

I was mostly reacting to Luuklag's "What are you doing chatting here then" :)

oh, gotcha

@NordTheLoftyWizard I believe you got it wrong ;)

Speaking of Android meta questions (great segue, I know), I've noticed the Community bumping feature on Android.SE is especially useless, because it constantly bumps many-years-old questions about phones that probably approximately no one has anymore (especially not in working condition), so no one can possibly check if the answer is correct or not.

@MetaAndrewT. yeah, you're right; was mostly comparing size of dump when saying this. I guess this isn't enough to know if one is more active than the other?
@RyanM yep, I noticed that too
there also less traffic there for "answering" question. It's like, you'll see maybe one or two comment, rarely more than 3 answer on a single question
and when you make a duplicate post, it won't get flagged as such, but someone will comment under your post to help you (at least)
so I think it's just pretty "chill" there, for lack of better wording

9:55 AM
@NordTheLoftyWizard depends on "currently active" or not, because we kind of only have an average of 3 regulars now (excluding mods)

@MetaAndrewT. I see. As long as there still regulars, that sounds active to me

Dang, that makes Law Meta sound downright active, I think we've got at least 5 or 6 regulars.

@RyanM also, re old phone: I have a couple of those, and I have to say you're pretty much on your own for "flashing" or other android-ish stuff

@NordTheLoftyWizard "used" is too much honor but I did download occasional an xml file if I needed a large set for some testing. Most stuff I'm interested in is obtainable with SEDE and that has more data.
@Luuklag waiting for the difficult flags to disappear magically

@rene I see :D. I only used it a bit myself, but was mostly wondering if you knew how to get the older version of data dumps (as in, older data dump). (without checking every time it get updated)

10:04 AM
I think someone is seeding those here: meta.stackexchange.com/a/224922/158100

@rene Thanks, didn't know this link :D
re re phone (didn't had time to write and pressed enter too early...): I had a couple ones of those old phone I wanted to flash, and noticed you're on your own as I mentioned, which is kinda sad.

I heard you can make them easier to flash with stuff like adb, but you'd need to dump their firmware/rom/etc which you need special kit to do so
or I guess one can always wait and hope for someone to have already done that for your specific brand and version of phone...

ADB won't really help make things easier to flash

@RyanM yes, but it will make things easier to interact with the phones themselves
but you can't do that if adb doesn't support whatever firmware the phone use, so you need to dump them in a format adb understand, and hope it work
if not, you'd need to do more digging

Doesn't adb work with ~every Android phone?

@RyanM nope, sadly it doesn't
very old phones with Android 2.0 (and less) and say, some rare one with Android 3.0+
I can list you a couple different models I have that aren't supported :/
it only seem to support all phone because people in the community help maintain it and provide firmware binary etc

10:11 AM
Oh, interesting. 2.0 predates my involvement with Android. I've never developed for below...Froyo (2.2), I think, and I've never owned a phone below Gingerbread (2.3).

@RyanM yeah, I said 2.0 but i really meant anything below and above that (so I wouldn't be surprised if there non-supported ones with 2.0+ as version)
but it's really really rare to see non-supported phone with higher version than 3.0

ADB support is a CDD requirement (see section 6.1) these days, so all modern devices really ought to support it.
Not sure when that requirement was added.
It's there in the 2.2 CDD at least. 1.6 as well, which is the oldest that's on the site.

@RyanM I can assure you, given all the custom phone being made, especially in Asia and such, most companies wouldn't always follow the CDD requirement exactly if at all sometimes

Ah yeah if it doesn't have Google apps all bets are off :-)

yep
although, it's easy to install google apps on non-google certified phone, but I digress

10:16 AM
*if it doesn't officially ship with Google apps with Google's permission :-p

10:29 AM

@SPArcheon oh, that's nice!
is that from that game? forgot the name

Didn't know this was Crochet on the Meta ;)

And now we need to bug @Tinkeringbell and ask if she takes commissions.

@NordTheLoftyWizard feel free to join Anime.SE's chat room ;)

.... Weird, etsy.com/shop/Tinkeringbell gives a 404 error.

10:34 AM
@MetaAndrewT. well, I won't deny I may have liking that align with Anime.SE but...I don't see myself asking or answering question there for some reason (not that I don't want to, but it feels like I wouldn't know what to say you know?)
like I could do it for scifi.SE (actually I already am) but for anything else of that vein, maybe not

@NordTheLoftyWizard I think Andrew was somehow implying that someone hijacked that room and now it is 70% Genshin...

@SPArcheon OH, so that's what they meant...
yeah I always forget the name of that game, although I did watch some play-through of it
hmm, guess I'll take a peek at the chat room there since I'm curious

11:02 AM
@SPArcheon I don't, since I want to do only fun stuff ;)

1 hour later…
12:12 PM
@SPArcheon google says she does do twitch, although I doubt it being the same person as our beloved moderator in here based on the profile pic

@Luuklag Heh. I might actually have an account on Twitch (not sure, might've made one while/to watch GDQ), but no. That's not me :)

yeah the person there looks a bit younger

@Tinkeringbell What is more fun of making Stack users happy and even get some freshly printed unicorn dollar in the process? :P

12:31 PM
@SPArcheon Making me happy ;)

12:53 PM
@rene @Glor congrats!

Is that the first mention in here?

I think so

First mention of them being mods? No

In my defence, I've been distracted. Its been an... interesting day

@JourneymanGeek No excuses

1:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek how come?

GUARDS, SEIZE HIM

@Luuklag Well...

Journey set the toilets on fire
One of the first things they teach you in Eastern Air Temple.

I might have talked my parents into getting another dog, then realised that its really expensive, and then I was told "oh, dad expected that"
So uh
Yeah, I might possibly be getting a puppy

1:03 PM
wow thats unexpected indeed

More hats blocking puppies' vision pics

@Luuklag the eventuality, no. The timing, yes
@M.A.R. SE owes me a new hat

You probably can't squeeze it out of the Dutch

too bad I was offline when the hat thing was a thing :/

@JourneymanGeek For a minute I panicked and couldn't remember where mine was... then I realized it's just hanging on my desk :D

1:04 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard Oh a literal hat

@JourneymanGeek oh, that's even nicer yeah

@Tinkeringbell My dad borrowed mine and I lost track of it

@JourneymanGeek That's why there's some stuff I will never loan to people :)

He lost a bet and ate his hat

@M.A.R. a bit more practice and you be putting out haikus like Yaakov

1:07 PM
I don't get Haikus.
Like, what's so cool about them

ah, haikus. I actually needed more of those for my local bash haikus notification...

We didn't have this conversation

that's what a haikus would say

I very rarely feel stirred by poetry that's in English.
Persian is different

I rarely feel stirred by poetry I can't read ;)

1:09 PM
haikus is like lemon; when you least expect it, it brighten up your mood/day/etc
@Luuklag yeah, but what if you "finally get it" when you least expect it?
like you're pondering about things and part of you finally understand: "so that's what this mean!"
I kinda like that feeling

1:32 PM
@M.A.R. I mean, I like silly rhymes from time to time... haikus are just... meh. Not fun.

haiku authorship:
"how hard can it be?", you say
practice makes perfect
haiku are not got
they get you, unassuming
pleasant little things
five, seven, and five
read them, ponder them, move on
redefine "fun" please

@YaakovEllis Whatever you like :) I like reading full sentences, not just a bunch of letters held together against their will :P

even with lemon
optimal with some sugar
tart, refreshing words
attracted letters
together through fate and love
in pleasing structure
(I'll be here all week folks)

We'll leave you alone so you can go make/fix stuff for us ;)

1:56 PM
@YaakovEllis I don't know what is worse, haiku's or confetti ;)

Does improving an edit in suggested edit review queue count towards copy editor?

@EkadhSingh Provided the edit you make is substantial (not just a tag edit or w/e) then yes. You're editing the post, after all - Just after applying the suggested edit's changes.

Ok, thank you.

2:14 PM
@YaakovEllis nice one
@YaakovEllis I see what you did there :D

@Tinkeringbell YES, FINALLY. Together, we shall rule the galaxy

@M.A.R. Woah, calm down. Do you know how much work it is to rule a galaxy?!
2

You can just suspend the jedi

Still... too lazy, sorry. You're on your own.

@Tinkeringbell that sounds like plot of a LN (light novel)

2:23 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard Just make a version of the very hungry caterpillar, but he ends up eating nothing because he is too lazy and dies. Done! :D

@Tinkeringbell XD still, I'm sure you can milk at least 30 chapter out of a plot like that
we could even give it such a long title that it end up being half of the story
"where's the summary?" "what summary? here, read the title"

@Tinkeringbell just hire rule-a-galaxy.com! We’ll rule your galaxy for you and definitely will not overthrow you when you’re not paying attention 👀

I can pay with attention? That's a cheap service.

1 hour later…
3:38 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard yeah we have an air compressor here we use to power-dust our server racks so xD
not the compressed air in a can, an actual air compressor's compressed air xD
@Tinkeringbell that depends - do you rule with force, or do you have a 'justice system' set up?

4:03 PM
@ThomasWard One traditional way of cleaning a coffee grinder is to grind some dry white rice with it. It has a fairly low moisture & oil content, so the ground rice doesn't stick (much) inside the grinder. And the moisture & oil in the coffee grains help to stick it to the rice. Also, you can see how well the process is working from the colour of the ground rice. Follow up with the compressed air, if you like.

@PM2Ring good to know. 'cept i dont' grind my own coffee anymore - I buy it ground from the local roasters xD

🏏☠🐎

@ThomasWard Either way, it requires ruling, which is too much work :P

@PM2Ring that sounds like an interesting idea; but wouldn't it leave some oil still? even with compressed air? (I mean, I already tried removing oil with compressed air...it's feasible but take a decent amount of time)

4:19 PM
In the privacy policy, SE says “The Stack Overflow Enterprise platform is not intended for children. We do not knowingly offer this service to anyone under the age of 16.” However the Terms of Service says “You must be at least 13 years old to access or use the Network or Services”. What does this mean?

@EkadhSingh maybe they mean the first one for "those who make an account" while the other one is for "whoever access it without an account"
I'm only speculating here though but that would make sense if it was that

Rob
@Luuklag Nothing beats the Irish Limerick:
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!

It means it is a fuzzy subject
The minimum age for collecting data etc (thus allowing account creation) varies by country, and usually the most restrictive is the one enforced
In this case, 13 is the most restrictive, so is the one enforced
I’d imagine the other is enforced when required by gdpr etc

@KevinB hmm, that would make more sense than my earlier speculation
didn't thought of it like that

@KevinB isn’t having to be 16 or older more restrictive than having to be 13 or older?

4:27 PM
Yes, that was a mistake

It’s easier to just have one policy to enforce than going per country, particularly when the data required to enforce it isn’t allowed to be collected due to it

@Tinkeringbell simply puts explosives on every planet, first one that goes out of line BOOM

@ThomasWard Yeah but then you still have to do work in finding out when one goes out of line, put thinking into where the lines are and blegh... :P I'll stick with two SE sites for that, don't need an entire galaxy.

Rob
@NordTheLoftyWizard That was a reply to the prior comment, regarding vegetarianism.SE; me being a tiger and all ...

4:33 PM
But the explosives are a good idea, I'll make sure to get some near the servers :P

@Tinkeringbell nah you simply blow up everything xD
problem solved

ユニコーンは
雪にきらめく
の冬の兆候

@ThomasWard Yeah, true! Then there's nothing left to rule :D

@Rob OH, yeah that make more sense now that you put it in context (didn't read too far in the history)

Rob
🐯

4:46 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard True, but the idea is to clean the grinder regularly, so coffee & oil doesn't get much of an opportunity to build up. Dry coffee isn't too bad, but the coffee powder picks up moisture from the atmosphere, which makes it stickier. And IIRC, it also causes it to expand slightly, so any coffee powder caught in micro-cracks gets wedged there.

@PM2Ring And that is why you should drop coffee and switch to matcha :P

@SPArcheon ... or let someone else do the grinding and then just enjoy the final product yourself xD

@ThomasWard Hopefully not a Palm Civet.

lol

5:07 PM
@SPArcheon I use Thomas's strategy: I let someone else grind my coffee. ;) I like my coffee in the Turkish / Lebanese style. Put water & sugar in a small pot, put finely ground coffee on top, and bring it to the boil.

5:18 PM
@PM2Ring oh yeah. Didn't thought about the whole expansion of the coffee powder/particle. Make sense yeah

I simply use this "genious" dutch devise that makes a beverage that resembles coffee quickly

@Luuklag you got a laugh out of me, thanks

And it takes these "pads":

(I do use that myself, but like...)
although I admit I don't use that specific brand of coffee
(I did try that one coffee maker though)

There are dozens of brands that produce these pads these days
The first few years it came out the design was patented, so there was only one brand of them.
I think the device was a colab between Philips and Douwe Egberts (a coffee and tea brand)

5:29 PM
@Luuklag yep, you're right
I recall that because most of the coffee maker brand I tried was from Philips

Has this banner always been there?

the yellow bit? i've never seen that banner design before on stack

5:44 PM
I've seen that before, I think...

@Luuklag done

Super-powered delete votes.

Same here, seen it before. Don't know if it's always been though.

The error is now in 3 places
also once at the submit button

@Luuklag I remember seeing that way back when I first joined, so quite a while

5:47 PM
Well it is a pretty important warning, to be fair.

@Luuklag I remember seeing this banner's color with a similar message, except it was about a flag I did on SO on my own question...

i wonder how it'd work if you had fixed header disabled

it had the same font too
@KevinB worth trying I guess? ;) wonder how you would do it

a copy/paste of the html that generates it would probably be plenty to recreate it
though... is that even a fixed header

@KevinB I think it's javascript generated, but don't quote me on that :)
at least that's what I'm guessing given it isn't always there and only happen when server send those because of a specific action or smth

5:56 PM
oh it definitely is
(javascript generated that is)
StackExchange.notify.show() in the console shows it
;)
so it's fixed regardless of your header settings
when it appears for me, it messes with the bottom border of the searchbox
probably just a rendering bug

Oh hey, they can stack:

I mean, the banner style is ancient; it's used on Area 51

Hi @Luuklag @Spevacus @Zoethe I'm curious why that post of mine got so much attention all within just minutes? I didn't think it was a highly active or high-profile or "hot" post by any means. I appreciate @Spevacus pointing out that image descriptions can be helpful for blind people that are relying on audio readings of the posts.... this totally hadn't crossed my mind at the time. I'm curious why so many people caught the edit so quickly though.
Perhaps Spevacus caught it due to Luuklag's post here, but still it was a lot of people in a short amount of time.

People monitor the front page.
In any case, I'm curious why you felt the need to retroactively reject the edit, even if you didn't fully understand what the benefit of descriptions is - was it really worth undoing it?

That ^
Popped up on the front page
