Would this question qualify for rude/abusive for system abuse? It's not even a question.

@ymb1 Known troll
I think 90% of the time, if you see Bannon mentioned on meta, you can probably flag it for attention. 100% if there's a political comic :D

3:00 AM
@ymb1 It's basically the equivalent of alt text, so in case the image can't render, the alt text will be there to explain the image's contents.

it is alt text

tries to come up with an on-topic MSE question featuring a political comic about Steve Bannon

Damn it's gone. I can't see it. :(

@RyanM "Alas! We are besieged by the spectre of misguided political activism, our pristine shores befouled by posts calling out Steve Bannon..."

Who doesn't care because he does what he does in full knowledge.

3:05 AM
As in he's doing that for the purpose of trolling?

Nah. I mean Bannon.

Oh. I know almost nothing about him, just that he ran that one far right blog.
(Unless I'm thinking of someone else)

3:22 AM
@Catija TBH - I don't give two hoots about bannon.But he does have these folks upset enough to keep calling them out inappropriately

3:34 AM
It's reasonable to be upset. It's completely unfair and wrong to make Asians the scapegoat, particularly when it leads to violence.

Is he the guy who called it "china virus"?

One of them. There's lots of people who are calling COVID that.
(By people I mean politicians and pundits)

It's such a strange thing to call it.
It's not like the Chinese invented it.

@Catija If it was a real person/people on the appropriate time -I'd be less grumpy
And the best way to hurt someone like that is to take away their relevance.

Politicians certainly aren't real people.

3:42 AM
The thing that amuses me is that the British politicians who used the term suddenly got really grumpy when we started referring to the variant first seen there as "the UK variant"...

We're having issues with racism here cause of the indian outbreak

What hypocrites.

Of course you can't really tell between a local indian and someone who came here recently

@JourneymanGeek Well some of India's problem is US holding on to patents, making it hard for them to manufacture the vaccines themselves.

3:43 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange Its also a simple matter of scale and population density

Yeah, hence "some of".

But I'm thinking more the social impact

There's also the issue of pseudoscientific myths/folklore.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange like cowdung being an antiseptic. I know.

And the whole pooping in the street thing.
Cowdung being an antiseptic?? O_O

3:45 AM
Oh, street, no

@JourneymanGeek I feel like cow dung is a proseptic, if anything.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange that's being looked into. It's absurd in general (makes insulin prices extreme) but for a global pandemic, the drug companies should be taking the goodwill of making them open without the government forcing it. Also, we can remove the patent but (if I understand it correctly) there's other countries that have to agree to that.

But yes "doing toilet in the outer" is a thing.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange Also the US was stockpiling production supplies
and the MRNA vaccines are new enough only a handful of facilities can produce them

I remember hearing about some project the Indian government started to try to convince kids to poop in toilets, so they made this horrible video "take your poo to the loo" or something.

now that they work...

3:47 AM
Now or not?

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Well - the first step was building toilets and a functional sewage system

Yeah the US is really screwing everyone.
@JourneymanGeek I thought the issue was that they were afraid of the "loo witch".

@Catija Oh, they do work, and they're proven - which means they might be useful fro...
@forestdistrustsStackExchange That's untrue

oh
Well serves me right for getting my news from /pol/

Yeah. Much safer to get it from late night TV hosts.

You need to get it from rumours and little children.

Don't forget gut feeling.
Best source of news is gut feeling and prejudice, according to the average American.

Not restricted to news... to be honest. Also applies to science and geography and all sorts of things.

Humans in general are terrible at judging the accuracy of information provided to them.

The lack of feedback when comments are deleted is pretty weird on se. I asked for clarification on a question (not on crypto.se) and judging from the edit history I can only assume that the poster answered, a mod then edited the question to include the answer and the deleted the comments. But there's literally zero indication of what happened and I did not even receive a notification of the response. Seems pretty counterproductive.
Another person lamenting the lack of notification for deleted comments. :/
@Rob "Working otherwise" yeah, just not securely. :P

6:53 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange AFAIK @-mentions remain in your inbox until read, even for deleted posts.

7:03 AM
@Luuklag open the MS report, it says why I reported it

well the post contains no spam, but it's not that great to keep.

I mean, the user's contributions to the network include, in their entirety, three posts promoting Stellar's website or tools.

I prefer to moderate posts, not users

What's the saying... Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action spam.
That site also has a long history of posting cleverly disguised spam on the network.
Re: moderating posts vs. users, it's sometimes necessary to look at the user's history to tell if the posts are spam. In this case, it really does like there are.

@Luuklag yes and no
Its useful to flag spam, but patterns are also useful

7:13 AM
@RyanM *they are.

Huh, odd. This user's avatar, when I view it directly, is animated:
But when SE renders it, it displays a "play" icon over it.
Is this a new way SE is dealing with animated images?
Oh wait, is this just how googleusercontent is displaying it?

That's a bit... annoying

Yeah it is. Having a play icon makes absolutely no sense.

Well it appears that at least google images are fixed again
@forestdistrustsStackExchange yup, that is how it is hosted on google

7:24 AM
Well its probably the way google renders thumbnails for gifs

Yeah but... why a play icon? It's not like it's an actual functional button.

Cause... designers?
Maybe someone copy pasted thumbnail code from stack overflow felt it was a good idea to let people know it was a thumbnail of a gif explicitly?

@forestdistrustsStackExchange well usually it links to the full version.
so clicking that opens the real gif

Ah, so this user just used an image URL meant for clickable thumbnails.
(Also, Railgun was a great anime. This dude has good taste)

@forestdistrustsStackExchange would be my guess

7:28 AM
Or SE picked up on that and the user didn't look too closely

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Google, likely that's what you see when viewing the user's Google profile
@JourneymanGeek SE doesn't pick up anything, it's direct embed of image hosted on Google.
@Luuklag thanks! /cc @Ekadh thanks too for the kind words. :)

The user who posted that Android.SE post I reported to SD has now been destroyed

@RyanM nice
Meta Smoke site SSL expired today, who can fix it? @Undo isn't around.

Should have used Lets Encrypt. Automatic cert renewal is so nice.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Known issue in Charcoal, waiting for one of the people with access to show up

7:43 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange it's for 3 months, so looks like some free service

@forestdistrustsStackExchange You, uh, might want to check the issuer on the cert ;-)

Shog9 - you get 9 months of free SSL

I guess they should fix their certbot cronjob then? :P

7:44 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Let's Encrypt :-p

as I'm about to send a complex custom flag, I realize that linking metasmoke in flags at this particular moment is probably not the best timing...

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard whoever put the shift and enter keys next to each other is the worst

@RyanM you tell me? Happens to me almost daily, though for me with backspace.
I make typo, want to remove it with backspace, and boom! message posted by mistake when I misclick Enter
!!/blame worst keyboard design ever

7:54 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard It's forest distrusts StackExchange's fault.

Hmm, your keyboard is shaped differently than mine. Mine's got a backslash between backspace and enter.

o:
yeah looked for keyboards on Google now and what I have isn't standard indeed, lol

So do I

7:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek yours is custom made, I assume? ;)

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Not really - Its a off the shelf keyboard, but I can customise the layout

Only change in mine is caps lock is fn-capslock to toggle, and acts as a shift otherwise

@JourneymanGeek good choice, I've got the same one :-)

8:01 AM
> Missiles flying over your head
At least it's not from @M.A.R's place, that would be much more nasty. ;)

@RyanM I slightly miss my keypad but I have a seperate mechanical keypad off aliexpress

@JourneymanGeek if you like it, do you have a link? I've got a cheapo non-mechanical one off Amazon and it is awwwwwful.
(it works but it just feels mushy)

The switches are Gateron

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard No major damages?
@JourneymanGeek feel free to nuke: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/364359/…

Nice, thanks! I wonder if that sends actual numpad codes or not

8:08 AM
@RyanM actually, If I can find my notes, I can check
I was digging into a keyboard years ago

@Luuklag not in my area, but Israel does have casualties already, think that 5.
Luckily (?) for me I live near important military factory (not base) which has max protection.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard I guess that's a double edged sword. It would also make your region an important target...

I hear the Iron Dome being launched, it's about 20 in few seconds.

This suggested edit seems a bit off, it looks to me like AI is currently sponsored by AWS. If someone knows more and wants to fix it, that might be a good idea.

@Luuklag yeah, true, and not to mention pollution...
But they don't aim for strategic targets so far, they shoot blindly in order to cause as much damage as possible.

8:14 AM
I hope this entire conflict regarding occupied territories etc. finds a resolution during my lifetime :/

@Luuklag I doubt

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Didn't Israel start the attack on gaza, and they fired back?
I'm seeing a lot of that in the news.
Like 9 children were killed by the Israeli attacks, 50 something civilians.
It's horrible that all this is happening.

@RyanM I made an edit

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Its messy

Yeah.
Turns out people get pissed when you take their land by force.

8:17 AM
But there was apparently a legal ruling over some disputed neighbourhood that apparently Hamas wasn't happy with.

And then people are born in the stolen land and now it's not so simple since they were born there.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Don't forget quite a few countries using the palestinians for proxy wars

@JourneymanGeek I had heard Israel started the attacks, and Hamas only retaliated after Palestinian citizens were killed.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange It's called sharing. Toddlers can do that. :P

8:17 AM
Lets not have this conversation guys, there are only losers in such a conflict

@forestdistrustsStackExchange You believe in the toilet fairy...

@Tinkeringbell Well, it's not that simple. Toddlers are also taught not to steal!
Toilet fairy :D

Of course it isn't but I agree with Luuklag ;)

At the end of the day, the people who make the orders arn't the ones who suffer

8:18 AM
@Luuklag no way, lol. Best we can ever hope for is long time truce.
@forestdistrustsStackExchange not this time. Israel started the conflict by denying entry to Muslims into their holy place.
Not a nice thing to do, and very silly, I can't deny, but not rockets on their population.

Well, at least I know a bunch of Palestinian kids were killed by Israeli missiles prior to Hamas attack.
Also weren't we supposed to change subject or something? It is a sensitive topic.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange well they claim it's from our bombings, our experts claim it's their own misguided rockets. Can't know the truth.

"our experts" eeeeeh

One thing for sure, 100000% - Israel will NEVER aim for target having kids in it on purpose. That's enough for me to have clean conscience.

hah. hahah. hahahahha

8:21 AM
It will always be he-says, she-says

Remember that little girl who got sniped?

Okay, this is indeed derailing enough to have our experts say to drop it.

@Tinkeringbell +1

New topic: kittens!

8:21 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange Meh.

Ah shit I had an adorable picture of a kitten open somewhere and I closed it. :(

@forestdistrustsStackExchange my kids are scared the cats outside will get hurt.

I'm more of a puppy person.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange nyan.cat

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Other way around here. My kid is scared of my cat.
But that's because she's literally evil and will attack anything that moves.

8:23 AM
haha nice
Our cats get along with our kids better and better

@forestdistrustsStackExchange lol totally opposite from my kids, yeah :D
@forestdistrustsStackExchange ohh
We never had cats in our home, kids got attached to all the street cats they can find.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard cute and sad at the same time

To the point they both say they won't get married or have children because they'll have only cats.

But if you get married you get help caring for the cats...

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard haha crazy cat kids. Great!

8:25 AM
(it's not their idea; they know the woman who feeds all those cats, and that's what she said.)

0.1234567890, then I turned off capslock and the same

@RyanM small chance, more likely spouse won't like cats. Why? My wife doesn't like cats. ;)
They're sure that whatever happens in our family applies world wide to everyone. lol
@Luuklag :D

@JourneymanGeek do you mean num lock? Also, what tool is that so I can look up how to interpret that? ^^;

Yes
@RyanM I tend to use evtest

Q: Getting macro keys from a Razer BlackWidow to work on Linux

Journeyman GeekI picked up a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate that has additional keys meant for macros that are set using a tool that's installed on Windows. I think the reason this is only shown on the Taxonomist badge being awarded is because there was a concern raised a while ago that showing it for all tags would result in people gaming the badge by applying a tag they created to a bunch of random questions. Restricting the display to cases where it was already awarded would mitigate that issue. — Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog 6 hours ago
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog sorry I don't follow. How would showing the creator without being linked to an award be gamed?

I've custom flagged it for mod attention
I don't think we'd need a CM attention

2:34 PM
Poll: Which currently employed CM does the most work

define work

@EkadhSingh tbh - a lot of CM work seems to be behind the scenes
And its a little unfair when we went from a badly depleted team to one that's rapidly being built up
Ask that in a year ;)

@KevinB idk, whatever you choose in your answer

like, CM work, or marketing

What’s the difference?
@JourneymanGeek okay :)

2:42 PM
Also - you don't want to hear about stuff some CM teams do. If something that involves the trust and safety team, and it involves the "safety" part of it...
Things have gone horribly wrong :D
(Part of the job's also crisis management, and I can tell you from experience... its hard)

the opposite seems a bit easier

@EkadhSingh the heck is sleep

@KevinB Trust's also hard, but you can build it up. Like a resistance to iocane powder.

INCONCEIVABLE

THAT WORD! IT DOES NOT MEAN WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANS!

2:53 PM
what is the plural of crisis

@Tinkeringbell yes, that is when you're snoring, right? Pretty loud.

Also crisis I think

@JourneymanGeek To be a bit less ominous but no less concerning: CMs have been SWATted, mods have been stalked, people have been threatened. Sometimes things that start online don't always end online, and some people take things way too seriously.

@Mithical true

@EkadhSingh I'd prefer a poll for "which currently-employed CMs have the most backlogs" :p

2:54 PM
@rene I have very cute lady snores! My dad though....

But that shouldn't be an essential part of any of that, and what they do, its what they deal with
No one, ever, should be harassed

@KevinB "crises".

@Mithical and yeah, that's true.

@Tinkeringbell all in the family ... I move on ...

I kinda was thinking with respect to the site in general
@Mithical on the other hand - those are situations where I think the affected party should have the choice of revealing it - and that it happens is bad too ._.

2:56 PM
I mean yeah, of course it's bad
Attempted murder over internet moderation is a tad extreme

@Mithical Attempted murder is generally, impolite.

@JourneymanGeek Would dueling count? I thought dueling was rather polite :P

@Tinkeringbell Most duels were actually kinda non lethal
Unless it was explicitly a duel to the death, I suppose

@Tinkeringbell My way isn't very sportsmanlike.

@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't know, they were out of fashion already before I was born :P
