2 hours later…
6:51 AM
@Rob no dog for me
Though the pet shop where I buy fish food is called Mad Dog maddog.co.il

7:42 AM
o/

@Luuklag well it comes in all forms and languages....

True, but this is the first time I've seen it in dutch
whilst it also makes little sense to post in dutch, as there aren't that many of us
Perhaps I've seen spam in Hebrew, but then I couldn't tell if it was or wasn't ;)

@Luuklag This chat is filled with Dutch people! It makes perfect sense :P
Also that one sentence is making my head hurt.
> een aantal trucs voor het oplossen van problemen bedacht om uw accountwachtwoord te herstellen.

yeah looks like google translate

@Luuklag yeah... actually don't think I ever saw spam in Hebrew. @Mithical did you see such thing?
@Luuklag probably Arabic, which is more "popular", i.e. used by more people... ;)
@Luuklag what does it mean?
Anyway, fridge at work is usually a mess, somehow today it's well organized so I took a pic... :P
Top shelf is mostly my things.

7:58 AM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating It's a scam. They wan't you to call this phone number to help you recover your lost AVAST password

@Luuklag oh yikes. I prefer scam offering $100000 :D

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Where I worked as a weekend job you had to label your food with date and name, anything left after 7 days went straight to trash

@Luuklag yeah, been in such place in the past, while exploring new places outside my "ordinary" job.
Here anyone can throw away anything if it's expired, usually nobody cares. ;)

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Not everyone can be a Nigerian prince

8:19 AM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating yes
It's rare, though

@Mithical What would be the market for Hebrew spam. For Dutch it would be 17M, and then take out everyone that's either to young or too old. So say about 10M people?

8:34 AM
@Mithical on SE? Nice... I guess.... lol
@Luuklag princess will be fine too. ;)

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Isn't that the sugarbaby scam then? ;)

Rob
I had some high rep people asking for tech support in the comments a few times this week, COVID brain knows few boundaries.

@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog Now I have to decide if this was all a waste of time. Thanks!

8:49 AM
Yeah rene, congratz!
And yeah, it probably was ;)

Ha!

9:11 AM
@Luuklag sugar baby sounds nasty even to me... :O
@Rob ?
@rene sure it was! :D
@rene Happy SE Anniversary!

Rob
The 40 dollar cone

@Rob might be, didn't check the price.
But for @rene I'll pay whatever is needed, he earned it rightfully, with hard work. :D

9:28 AM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating is that for all our disagreements ;)

10:13 AM
@Rob I found the Chariot.

10:27 AM
Does anyone know which answer broke the sandbox?
It's really messed up right now, beyond use really...

@Luuklag I'm not sure if anyone remembers how to do it but maybe a sandbox cleanup/replacement may be in order

@JourneymanGeek only @Shog maybe he can pass the crown tools to some developer? (name starts with "Y" ;))

A: Formatting Sandbox

Rocket Nikitawaffles waffles waffles waffles post temporarily edited so the sandbox is usable

@Luuklag that one and temporarily fixed
ooh
this one is a pain
I want to post a meta post on it, but I'm worried someone might actually go do this.
@Ayo quick question if you're free, and if you know

@JourneymanGeek post it, delete it, and tag it status-review ;)

If I status-review something then delete it, its still in your Jira right?
@Luuklag close enough!
I'll also invoke the anchient rite of CM Mugging

10:39 AM
We survived the 'empty' post too, is this one going to be that much worse?

I mean, in THEORY I think there's plan B, and that's reporting it as a potential security issue
@Tinkeringbell yes

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. Just write a post in the Mod Room :P

@Tinkeringbell I was thinking another formal route, just reporting it as a security issue
I mean, in theory I could just email SE :D

That's an idea too :)

Why rollback @JourneymanGeek?

10:47 AM
@Luuklag screenshots

And I hadn't seen it yet :P

ah k

@Tinkeringbell not much to see, just.... broken page where you can't even edit any answer.
It's using ancient bug with pure HTML code/pre hacks, surprised it wasn't fixed in CommonMark.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Yeah I saw :) I'm still in favor of just posting this on MSE, and just suspending everyone who tries :P

oh... not relevant, CommonMark and pure HTML rendering are two separate things.
@Tinkeringbell surely it was reported already... let me see...

10:52 AM
@Tinkeringbell posted for docs purposes. Then deleted ;D

hmm.... weird, can't find. :(

@JourneymanGeek :D Now hope someone ever finds it ;)

@JourneymanGeek does that bug run or ruin the page controls?

@Luuklag :D
Yes
@Luuklag the main goal was documenting undoing it :D
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating any 10ker would know better and realise they will face the full wraith of dog (tm) so... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/361565/…
I'm actually tempted to delete the answer and undelete the question
it would make replicating it 'harder' but OP worked it out first, and make sure the fix is available

11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek k
@Luuklag nah, quality filters exist in other sites too.

Then its a useless dupe ;)

@Luuklag this might be, but won't bother to delete duplicates...

tbh, that would result in the same thing on any other site
the problem is the question lacks meat

11:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek skinny

12:37 PM
wth was that lol
ex husband..

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating I don't know how this would benefit any spammer...
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating sociopath

yeah lol. Wasn't really a spammer, more like.... weird troll.

yay, our email domain is blacklisted by microsoft :/
which stupid collegue did send an email to 50 people at the same time this time...

Rob
12:53 PM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating In all that fire?:

@Luuklag LOL... how?

marked as spammers

Not really sure how, cause it's IP based
Hopefully we don't share our mailserver with different companies
Or at least its IP

@Rob there was just ash, no fire.

12:57 PM
Unfortunately, messages from [X.XX.XXX.XX] weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list (S3150).
You can also refer your provider to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors. [AM5EUR03FT013.eop-EUR03.prod.protection.outlook.com]
This is the error I got

Unfortun ately?? lol. Typi cal for Micro soft.
Probably their code doesn't support long words.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating It breaks hard-coded, I tried putting it back together but missed a space

If you're receiving this error, it means your email message was sent from a server or domain that is currently listed as a high volume spam source by a reputable global block list.
That's what I suspected.
Probably someone that mailed a bunch of people at one time again. Probably all in the TO: field

Rob
1:12 PM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Looks like a couple of shells:
Far more, way better images and angles here: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9307057/…

1:48 PM
@Luuklag you could visit mail-tester.com, send an email to the temp address they offer and then check the score. It comes with a recommendation report, including setting up spf records adn dkim stuff.

2:01 PM
@rene thx for the tip. But all that stuff is (luckily) outsourced. So I just send them an email to fix it :)
Scores 9.9/10
At least Microsoft has the courtesy to let you know they spam blocked you
for a while KPN (a dutch provider) just silently dropped all our emails

Yeah, I also have it "outsourced" but it is a pain if you in the end have to diagnose stuff yourself and then tell the outsourcing party to fix their stuff.

Ryan Donovan on March 01, 2021
One of the tough decisions you and your team may face as you scale is deciding between keeping your current codebase and rebuilding on a new architecture.

2:17 PM
@rene True, as far as I can tell we only have invalid DKIM, but that doesn't appear to matter much

Rob
2:28 PM
@Feeds Not a particularly good move to start with Perl, nor to move from C++ to Java - javatpoint.com/cpp-vs-java eweek.com/development/ten-advantages-java-has-over-c/15

Yeah, Rust is a much better target for switching to
especially if you have already been exposed to C++

@Feeds Software design pattern: Sacrificial pattern?

@MetaAndrewT. Should we then dance around a piece of sourcecode while burning it?

2:44 PM
either that, or... the coder instead...

Rob
2:55 PM
@Feeds That's really a tiny niche of the overall architecture and usability design: highscalability.com/ebay-architecture infoworld.com/article/3041064/… and it's better not to look at it at such a low level: businessintelligencemarket.com/…
I think that the idea for the story came up because eBay is one of the examples used in school - it's not a "homework question", it's a homework answer.

3:45 PM
@Rob yes that's the source.
@MetaAndrewT. 🚽
I sacrifice a lot in there ^

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Do you ever get working software in return?

Depends... pulls out the bristol scale

There's... an official scale. of course.

@Tinkeringbell actually.... many bugs were solved while I was sacrificing time and resources in there. :-D
It gives me time to think clearly.

Ah yes. I do that while I'm sleeping, then wake up in the middle of the night, make a mental note to remember, sleep more, and don't know what I was supposed to remember in the morning XD

3:55 PM
@Tinkeringbell Heh, I once was stuck in a video game, and saw how to win it in a dream....
and it worked :D :D :D

@Tinkeringbell and so bugs persist.... :D
@JourneymanGeek LOL.... what game?

Halflife 2

How can you get stuck in a Shooter game?

in the ending you only have the modified gravity gun
you need to shoot the energy balls at a specific thing to end the game

@JourneymanGeek oh... never did such missions, always just went for online pvp modes.

4:06 PM
I prefer single player games since I have not much of a predictable schedule

Well back then it thrived with players from all around the world, there were many people at any time.

i prefer single player games so that i can decide to put it down for a week and it not matter. but old FPS's were that way as well

now days everything has a progression system, so if you give it up for a week, you're giving up a week of progression

4:08 PM
@user400654 unless you pay few $ to buy what you missed...

I was playing cyberpunk. Now I'm playing valhelm, which is basically me dicking around building things :D

^
can share a pick of my recent building

I play Castle Clash for 7 years... it's free to play but f2p players have no chance against those who pay.
@user400654 sure thing!
Anyway.... in the last few months I got into the top ranks by buying account from someone who quit.
I still don't pay to the company though.

can't get mobile to work in here
ohwell, maybe later

I'm still working out building dynamics
I can build a octagonal building, with 45 degree angles but I can't roof it

4:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek can't you ask others in the game to help? Guilds?

26 degree polyons work, and you can mostly roof em
You could do multiplayer

I took a peninsula with a low land bridge and turned it into an island, with a dock on the calm water side
then built up stone walls around it

but I don't mind taking the time to yanno...
lol
I haven't even tried to fight the first boss yet :D

haven't put actual buildings in it yet
just my little crafting hut for building

I'm now trying a 3x3 braced cube, and seeing how high I can get

4:14 PM
stone was surprisingly hard to build with
it generally has better support, but because the blocks are half the height of wood walls, you end up reaching similar limits quickly without added support

there it goes

@user400654 nice! Who is Ronon?

heh, someone who used to frequent js chat

4:19 PM
@user400654 lol, that message is automated (e.g. when a Friend gets online) or sent manually?

automated
it pings their location on the map, like a /s shout
i built that friday/saturday, haven't logged in since

@user400654 so it might be infested with monsters by now..... :O

I think they don't spawn near houses + you can build defenses

they don't spawn on pathed ground from what i understand
and since it was all flattened inside, it's all pathed
but it's also kinda like minecraft, in that mobs spawn near players
there's noone anywhere near that

4:26 PM
one issue with that design is... that boat is a target, and gets attacked by everything

@user400654 so put it inside the house.
Gibbs has a boat in his basement.

oh that's something that I actually need to experiment with eventually

@JourneymanGeek building boats in your basement?

i could make a sort of... door'd bay to back the boat up into, but that boat is quite tall

building boat garages :D

4:30 PM
and the sail is wide

or more precisely, arches
and see how high I can get em

@user400654 you rent sailors?
@JourneymanGeek does height really matter? (in the game ;))

Rob
Doctor Surgeon Lawyer vs. Cat Lawyer:

builds tend to have a maximum height based on structural integrity

@JourneymanGeek heh, very realistic.

4:34 PM
there's also some... ways around it

I do hope there are toilets in each building.

no toilets

for example, wood placed on stone, even unstable stone (orange) count as foundation

but you need a fireplace

but wood can't support stone

4:35 PM
and there's smoke

@JourneymanGeek good enough, make use of the pee.

so you can't do a back/forth

I'm really early on :D

there's also iron-laced poles that work similarly, but are tall

Rob
Wood and stone construction:

4:45 PM
I mean, I'd totally experiment with it (I have a specific design for my chimneys that lets me close or open them to the outside with a single door... ) :D

4:55 PM
it seems there's two options for dealing with smoke: a big enough area above them for it to aggregate, or... a chimney, but a chimney doesn't completely negate the need for area above the fire for the smoke to aggregate
for example, a 3x3 building 1 wall high with the middle square of roof raised one square isn't enough to prevent smoke damage

I just do a 2m square base, door on the house side, opening perpendicular to it, and at least a 6m tall space above it with a 26 degree roog

but if it's 2 walls high, you're fine
or even 1 and a half

Comparing summary statistics like the mean and median can help us understand how these variables are related, but we can learn even more by using visualizations.

5:27 PM
@Glorfindel I recently (2 mins) tried to use the Lost Souls' userscript to downvote/delete a question, but the del-vote box was grayed out... ?

@Ollie perhaps the score wasn't low enough to delete?

@Glorfindel Is -15 low enough?

yes :)
oh, wait.
You don't have 20k yet, so you can only delete questions which have been closed more than x days ago.

We appreciate the dry humour @Ollie ;)

@Glorfindel For the record it's this question I deleted.
@rene Good ;)
@Glorfindel 2 days, -16 now... looks like I met all the criteria.

5:30 PM
Sure, but the userscript assumes questions don't survive that long, and only allows deletion if you have 20k (or are a moderator).

Ohh
OK.

Edge cases like this don't occur that often, and I can't even check whether a potential fix actually works.

6:03 PM
@Rob good, we need more of those.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Um..

2 hours later…
8:07 PM
I wonder what the verdict will be on the design of the review queues

8:22 PM
@Tinkeringbell did you ever write that FR about the rather freely used ?
