Start date was pushed back to February.

This user is just copying random old comments as answers.
Why would someone do that? What's their end-goal?

@TheforestofReinstateMonica cheap rep?
bot training?

Yeah but... on such a low-traffic site?
Should I flag as spam?

NAA is better
custom flag is best

ok
I already did NAA before I realized what he did.

12:35 AM
You don't really want this vanishing vanishing as much as having an informed mod take a look

I have flags.
:D
so I have done the needful

thx
On an unrelated note, someone mentioned that they asked here about posting PGP-encrypted messages and some mod said that was against the rules because they "can't read what's inside it". Is this correct, or was the answer only relevant for Tavern's own rules?

12:51 AM
Nvm, I searched the chat logs and only saw a few people post opinions.

Rob
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating I see motion blur on that pink thing, on the lower right.

Rob
1:44 AM
@rene, is SEDE's concept of what time is it (10K) inaccurate; due to random cache skewing?

2 hours later…
3:35 AM
@TheforestofReinstateMonica there's a standing rule that if its not in english, and its flagged, its ok to mark the flag as valid - we have a workaround of asking around for a mod who speaks said language, especially for languages that SO or SE supports...
no one can read PGP, and tbh, if you don't want to talk in public, you shouldn't be using a public chatroom

@JourneymanGeek There was one case I think two days ago where someone wanted to say something private to another member (something about a security vulnerability, I think), so they used PGP. There's no reason why anyone would have flagged it, though.
But I suppose it's not too much of a hassle to link to a paste with the PGP text.
It'd just be a lot easier in such situations to just post it straight up.
@JourneymanGeek I'm 99.9% sure that if I flagged any non-English text here, I'd get banned. :D
Also, my GOD there's a lot of link rot in some of my older posts... :/
In some cases I can't find an archive in web.archive.org or archive.is.

3:51 AM
@TheforestofReinstateMonica if there's full context there - eh
But its still a risk you take. I try to figure out what's happening or leave it, but considering flags go to any 10k user in many cases...

Yeah the flag system is pretty broken anyway, when it comes to suspensions.

I can see that spamming PGP would be bad. Even with compression, they're long.

"Hey, so I need to pass a quick message about a security vulnerability - I'll shoot over a PGP encrypted message if its ok, but if you have any questions, we can take it offsite" works well.
it makes it a one off thing, full context, and I think if a mod noticed it in time they might even remove the suspension

Yeah that's a lot better than just posting random PGP messages in the middle of a public chat.

3:56 AM
@TheforestofReinstateMonica the fact that chat is public and both shared and neglected kinda...
Oh, if you get suspended for the former, its your own fault.
Its absolutely essential to keep in mind chat is (mostly!) a public space
If you have cookies, YOU SHARE WITH THE CLASS.

Yeah. I was thinking more of creating a separate single-purpose chat, not spamming other chats.

Rob
@TheforestofReinstateMonica I do that, but occasionally someone reads over your shoulder (shoulder surfs) and says that you posted it publicly in chat; so it's their business too. IRL if two people were talking and some random person snuck up and starting listening in, taking sides or attacking them both, there's few people I've seen that appreciate that - but in chat and forums they rely on anonymity to make new rules.
^ Like that. :)

yeah lol
@JourneymanGeek Can I exponentiate my cookies with a Fermat prime e and reduce it modulo a semiprime n? Modular exponentiation makes cookies taste better, imho.
Especially if gcd(e, λ(n)) = 1. Also if it has chocolate chips.

4:38 AM
I like my cookies Math Free, not Fat Free

Math is like vanilla. You can add it to almost anything to make it better.

Also, boring

Happy primes aren't boring!
They're happy!

4:58 AM
(accidentally posted a git commit, oops)

@Rob SEDE stores the result of a query in querycache table. The exact same query will, when "run", be served from the cache instead of actual being executed by the SQL Engine. The cache doesn't expire until the sunday refresh. See also: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/325802/data-explorer-cache/…

8:43 AM
So a bit of a circular closure happened: an author asked a question on Hardware Recommendations and it was closed with a directive to ask on Super User, and so they asked the same question on Super User and that was in turn closed with a directive to ask on Hardware Recommendations.

8:55 AM
@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog Look at the revision history on Super User - it has been edited. It's now kind of opinion based, but does have some good answers.

Maybe @ArtOfCode wants to offer a screenshot of hardwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/14494/… so we can verify the questions are the same

Etc
100% off topic on HR

that is the same text, basically as the one on SU
Thanks

@ArtOfCode Did that question hit HNQ?

*shrug*

9:10 AM
If we still had too localized as close reason, that one would apply here. You don't describe a generalized problem that applies to a wide audience, your are asking for consulting on your specific case and the answers are at best entertaining for you but not for many others. Either ask for an hardware device that can sustain a strict specified workload, that can be asked on hw.se. Or "invent" a problem with your setup that you need a solution for, as that can be asked on SU. Asking us to decide for you are not a great fit for the Q/A model. — rene 17 mins ago
@rene With a bit of JS trickery, it is still possible to vote to close questions for that reason. And since HR only requires one vote to close questions, using that trick would have closed the question with that reason.

@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog The SU version was HNQ until the community closed it.

Ah, so that's the one I'm remembering

@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog that is useless trivia for this case but thanks for sharing.
@DavidPostill are you willing to take the HDD /SDD question on SU meta and if yes, would @JourneymanGeek be so kind to migrate it. There is not much we can do here on MSE. I think we gave the right advice here

9:27 AM
@rene hmm. In theory I can make the decision on my own :D
Since I'm still vaguely a top N% user on HR.SE and SU :D

That will work for me. I only asked David as he commented earlier in the transcript on "the case". I didn't want to give the impression that I didn't value his opinion and went straight to an MSE mod that happens to be an SU mod as well.

I wouldn't have gotten that impression, since I know Journeyman Geek is an SU mod too, and they work as a team

10:08 AM
Consider it as an attempt to be overly polite. Don't worry, it won't happen again.

1 hour later…
Rob
11:10 AM
@rene Thanks for your answer but I think @Glo and myself found that where time is concerned that doesn't seem to be the case, the value varies. Take this query for example: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/125988/… - enter a different value to bust the cache and frequently the time is different; yet one would expect the migration date to remain the same (for a week).

...so long as they haven't edited the question in the meantime after closure, it hasn't been deleted or reopened, and they haven't disabled these emails in their settings

Rob
From what you are saying (1 + rand() - rand()) - (1 + GETUTCDATE() - GETUTCDATE()) (rewritten correctly, using proper T-SQL syntax) should equal zero (due to caching) while the true result would obviously be different.

11:57 AM
@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog this seems important, even if I don't think anyone here would get their questions closed :D
Except maybe that @M.A.R., since he has a feline avatar

Rob
12:13 PM
Indeed, checking text only results, the time is wrong (these should be different numbers): data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1361535/…

12:33 PM
@rene meta.stackexchange.com/questions/359940/… inspired by your recent (deleted) question, which I was going to status review (and it happened I had before)

@ShadowWizard I want to know how much chance of misreading Pandya to Panda? What do you think? Do people usually misread it or understand that it is different?
cc @ShadowWizardisVaccinating that comes true today!

Rob
1:25 PM
Shadow gets stuck on the first name, there being an obvious similarity:
Hardik Himanshu Pandya (born 11 October 1993) is an Indian international cricketer who plays for Baroda in domestic cricket and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium. His elder brother Krunal Pandya is also an international cricketer. == Early years == Hardik Pandya was born on 11 October 1993 in Surat, Gujarat. His father, Himanshu Pandya, ran a small car finance business in Surat which he shut down and shifted to Vadodara when Hardik was five; he did so in order to facilitate his sons with better cri...
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca; Chinese: 大熊猫; pinyin: dàxióngmāo), also known as the panda bear or simply the panda, is a bear native to south central China. It is characterised by large, black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The name "giant panda" is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda, a neighboring musteloid. Though it belongs to the order Carnivora, the giant panda is a folivore, with bamboo shoots and leaves making up more than 99% of its diet. Giant pandas in the wild will occasionally eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even meat...
Pinyin and Himanshu both sound Japanese.

@Rob oh! is he also from Gujarat?

Rob
Despite, obviously, neither is.
Maybe there's a long family line there?
A lot of people with that name.

@Rob They can be related to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandya_dynasty

@Pandya would have been much earlier if you were active here... ;)

Rob
Indeed the word is Tamil, but Hardik's birthplace is on the opposite side of India; and the Pandya Dynasty is Sri Lankan: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gujarat en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandya_dynasty#Foreign_sources

@Pandya is this really your name? Or just a nick like my own?

2 hours later…
3:34 PM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Are you talking about "Pandya"?

4:01 PM
@Rob not sri lankan, tamil

4:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek Topples glass off Journey's desk

2 hours later…
Rob
6:43 PM
@Aibobot "is" should have been "is in"

@Pandya yup
@M.A.R. I read that as "topless glass". ;)
@JNat cross site spammer, for your kind nuking. Thanks! :)

7:05 PM
Is anyone else getting some slow Imgur uploads?

How slow?

7-10 seconds @rene. Could just be my crappy internet.
They used to come up in 3-4 secs.
Errgh, that took 19 seconds. I'll try this monkey.
So the monkey in chat took 2 seconds.

@Ollie took 2 seconds for me, so no-repro.

@rene *shrug* then it's probably down to my internet.

7:20 PM
I'm fortunate with my ADSL as I'm very close to the telephone exchange.

Rob
@Ollie Pasting the Monkey's URL into the Image Uploader on MSE took less than a 1/10th of a second; trying that way eliminates upload and download speeds (your ISP) from the equation.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Your mind is as innocent as an infant's.

This question was bumped up on the main page. I took the opportunity to edit and fix typos, but now I notice it had been bumped for no apparent reason...(?) Users are going to think the bumping was caused by my edit, which gives a bad impression. How did this happen? Why was the question bumped in the first place?

@bad_coder There was a spam answer that bumped it. No worries, you can tell them that if they start complaining now ;)

9:49 PM
@Rob looks yellow.
@M.A.R. always was!

@Ollie what are you looking for with your bug reports with incorrect casing - the users on the language sites are generally the ones who do translations, not us. You may be better served asking them to be fixed on the language-specific metas.
Also relates to untranslated content.
Or, get to know the translators and talk with them in chat.

11:43 PM
Ugh, having a long discussion in comments and I can't move to chat because of that damn bug. :/
