Hmm. Are blog posts no longer one-boxing in chat?

Rob
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't: ~60/40.

@V2Blast in some dark room, a dice is rolled. If it's 1, 2, 3, or 4 - blog post is oneboxed. Otherwise, it's not.

Rob
They don't onebox them all to increase the click-thru rate. ;)

@Catija I'm curious, are you (SE in general, not you personally) officially allowing a user under 16 from Europe to keep their account on SE? Fine by me, but curious what's the process to allow it?
@Rob no ads in blog, so no motivation for that...

just don't bring attention to it
"don't ask, don't tell"

Pretty much

Rob
On other websites it's the parent's account, the child types while the guardian looks over shoulder; my understanding is that here it's simply not allowed, if discovered and proven.

@Rob well - more like parent signs a consent from, but lets be real
who does that?

@Mithical well the person himself was pretty chatty about it, that's why I was fully expecting the new account(s) to be nuked, but they weren't.
My point is, that if there's a process it can be added to a faq, so underage users who can really contribute will have something to hold to.
@JourneymanGeek someone named @ProgramFOX did exactly that.

@Shadow10YearsWizard If this is about the one from yesterday or the day before that... you're wasting time XD

IIRC... Doorknob? had to do it retroactively at one point

6:53 AM
oh
@Tinkeringbell I'm always wasting time.... ;)
wasting @M.A.R.'s time as well by useless daily ping

Rob
@JourneymanGeek In most cases you can clearly see that there's either no chance that the parent either watches what the youth does nor goes back and reviews the history of their child's account - either that or they have "no rules" - and you can see the occasional comment from time to time: "You let your daughter post that!?". --- So I'm guessing that a few hundred thousand followers and Internet Celebrity status pays the bills; some of them are aspiring super models who have large contracts with big
companies.

@Rob I'm old enough that we had the PC in a shared room, and there was no AC so the door was open ;)

Rob
7:00 AM
You can see some examples on TikTok, of behavior I would ask my children not to engage in.

And do they listen if you ask them?

Rob
7:13 AM
I don't have children to ask not to engage in behavior online that attracts negative attention.
The word "would" means it's something that I would do, not something that I am doing.

Easier said than done. :)

Rob
Very easy, if you don't have children.

Rob
IRL it's maybe one in several hundred that a teenager approaches me. But I guess online rules are lax and potential consequences are not well thought out, and getting attention is important.

@Rob let's both theorize how our parenting would work out ;)

7:28 AM
@Rob I'm not a fan of parenting by internet or legislation :D
But yeah, some fools feel "Its only the internet"

Rob
People I know who have kids have kids that are reasonably behaved.
When I was a teenager I wasn't too out of control. For example in high school we could choose the ordering of our classes, so a couple of years I arranged the classes that you could leave early and the ones that you could arrive late for adjacent to my spare block. That allowed me to go to the bar and watch the strippers from 16 years on; for a teenage guy that's a great accomplishment - as long as your marks in school don't suffer.
If I had a teenage son the usual rules apply: don't drink too much, don't get arrested, don't get nailed for being intoxicated at school and most importantly don't let your marks suffer.
Easier said than done, yes; but not impossible to do.
Skillz

7:45 AM
@Rob You must know some wonderful people then... I've never met any like that :(
Okay, maybe the ones from the neighbors but they're basically raised to be germophobes so they will just sit and be quiet, but even that is unsettling.

Rob
I live in a reasonable area, with the unreasonable area a few km away; rarely does too much craziness spill over into this area; and I think many of us are tolerant of the bi-weekly 'explosions at the police station' (kind of like fireworks at the park, but less safe and much noisier) and are willing to put up with a few hours of deafening explosions from time to time.
So that's not unsettling for me; apparently @Sha finds it confusing and unsettling, and he lives half a world away.

Deafening explosions aren't that uncommon here either, but usually it's just tanks at the firing range.

Rob
If you live across the street, and along the escape routes, I imagine it's much worse than being a couple of blocks away.

Rob
8:10 AM
This is how it all starts:
Now you know: "What do they teach their kids?".

@M.A.R. alla zingara

Translated as "to the gypsy"
Oh, MW has an entry on it
> : in gypsy style —used as a direction in music.
Good, well, I dunno what a direction is and I dunno what music is
Always wanted to read some music theory 101 or something like that to enjoy songs more

music theory does nothing to make you enjoy music more, IMO :P

Dunno, heard otherwise by professional musicians
Inb4 Tink is Beethoven's long lost greatgreatgreatgranddaughter and secretly a music prodigy
You do wonder about the repetitions and why certain repetitions of a beat are catchier than me drumming my fingers on a table

1:25 PM
@M.A.R. Don't worry. I can do a tiny bit of music, but I'm nowhere near a prodigy. I guess it depends on what you consider theory, learning about octaves, major and minor chords, and all the words to distinguish soft from loud and slow from fast didn't really make me enjoy music more ;)

2:01 PM
@M.A.R. Inb4 Tink is Beethoven's pet parrot's long lost greatgreatgreatgranddaughter and secretly a music prodigy
fixed.
I would have let that slip if you were talking about @JourneymanGeek because... you know...

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе I'm pretty sure no one would accuse me of being a Saint Bernard...

Next thing you know you'd accuse @Tinkeringbell of being a green macaw

@JourneymanGeek maybe she is? A green macaw painted red to confuse and trick us all?

Rob
@M.A.R. I guess this is better than you drumming your fingers on a table, it's a slow start until halfway through; even the next one is a bit tame.

2:08 PM
could also be an owl disguised as a macaw. We should ask John, who seems to be the local owls expert.

2:33 PM

Rob
This is what he said: "lalallallallalalalalalalllalalalalala".

You raise a good question. Do parrots wear glasses? I know that owls do.

@JohnDvorak yes
> Thanks to a tiny goggle-wearing parrot named after Obi-Wan Kenobi, scientists have shown just how much we still don’t know about animal flight. The researchers set out to illustrate a problem that’s been warned of in their field of study, but never tested: The three most popular methods used to calculate lift, or how much force winged animals use to keep their bodies soaring, are frequently inconsistent and inaccurate.
> To do so, they spent months training Obi to fly from perch to perch through a flattened vertical laser projected through a cylindrical lens. Sound dangerous? Don’t worry; Obi had his own custom made pair of 3D-printed goggles as safety glasses, and the lasers themselves were harmless.

I love that "one of the equations predicted zero lift, which clearly wasn't the case"

2:48 PM
> Obi deserves a thank you—or perhaps an extra serving of his favorite treat: fresh broccoli.

3:04 PM
Ugh. well there's everything that's wrong with non-red parrots in one sentence: They like broccoli.

@M.A.R. take the plugs out of your ears! :D
@Rob so you plan to have children of your own sometime?

Rob
Yes.

@Rob you mean the annual "fireworks festival" that @Tink mentions from time to time? Yeah, I can't understand how it's allowed. Fireworks are dangerous, it's like allowing people to fire guns for fun. (out in the open, not shooting range.)
@Rob good. ETA?

Rob
@Shadow10YearsWizard RSN, but not 6-8 weeks.
@Shadow10YearsWizard No, this is one of perhaps a half dozen examples:
Aug 14 at 7:58, by Rob
We have explosions at the police station, which seems preferable.
Aug 14 at 7:58, by Shadow Wizard Wearing Mask
@Rob huh? Who is behind this?

@Shadow10YearsWizard Amateurs.

3:19 PM
Well, Americans get guns, we get fireworks. And while guns are sold all year round at Walmart, we can only buy safety certified fireworks three days a year, and are only allowed a few hours to light them.

What irresponsible people do with them is up to them, but it's nothing like firing guns for fun XD

@Tinkeringbell fireworks can easily set fires and make people killed. How is it different from shooting guns outside, risking hitting random people too?
You aim for the open air, sure, but it can reach far.

@Shadow10YearsWizard You know, you're right. An idiot with fireworks is as dangerous as an idiot with a gun.

So why give those a chance to do those things?

But it's the 'idiot' part that's most important here. that same idiot is as dangerous with a knife, scissors, or a broken bottle.
You can't arrange a society around idiots.

Rob
3:22 PM
^^^^^^ Kenny and JLo approved.

You can set strict rule - "you must not do this, or else you're arrested". That's part of society.

is there a safe way to do fireworks, except to force everyone into space the debris definitely won't fall to?

@Shadow10YearsWizard Sure. So don't be a drunk idiot lighting legal fireworks, or a sober one ligthing illegal ones, or you get arrested ;)

And yeah, many times few idiots ruin something for everyone.

@JohnDvorak I mean, you don't generally need to force anyone to take their distance, unless they're drunk and reckless. In which case I'm not going to meddle XD
That's too much like wrestling pigs in the mud: They'll like it and I will end up getting hit by fireworks.

3:25 PM
@Rob this is the vid you suggested to @rene instead of the broken one?

Rob
There's four, and I've seen two so far.

@Rob oh... let me see the code...

Rob
rene might have added additional ones to the playlist.
I presumed it was like flush, more than one.
The same everytime wouldn't be as good, and the one's chosen have a huge number of hits; unlikely to deadlink.

@Rob there are four indeed, in a fixed array.
const yt = ['https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2vBLd5Egnk','https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBdQYwpj7VU','https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7vHqm9HcXc','https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cw1ng75KP0'];
The index is incremented by 1 every time, it's not random.
So next time Kenny is lonely, he should bring Machine Gun Kelly. :D

Rob
3:42 PM
Hips Don't Lie

@Shadow10YearsWizard No such command 'hips'.

Rob
Shakira

Copy failed, trying again...
> Your pelvic area and hips are the foundation of your spine. When healthy, your ability to move at any age can be almost limitless. Unfortunately, almost everyone experiences trauma to this area resulting in unbalanced hips and structural compensations that lead to nerve pressure and accelerated deterioration.
Success! Not only Shakira. ^

Rob

Almost everyone; except people Rob knows.

@Shadow10YearsWizard Almost everyone? Citation needed
@Rob Nepotism SMH

Rob
Cronyism vs. Nepotism - he'd need a large family for nepotism.
Crony also implies a greater age.

4:11 PM
I misread that as cryonism.

So, a few year ago the Winter Bash countdown had little stick figures running around. Someone ranted about not being able to interact with the figurines, and later the final site had an easter egg for that.
Should we start annoying the dev that we can't play with the parrot on this year counter site?
^ @YaakovEllis

Rob
@JohnDvorak ~2200 people agree, but Google's got your back:

Crayonism
Writes thesis with crayons

Rob
Cryoism, the belief in Cryonics.

4:39 PM
that reminds me...
Recently, I by chance saw an ads for this game.
am I mistaken or they are plagiarizing Chrono Cross logo?
not exactly the same, but the choice of adding that watch-like background on the C seems an odd coincidence :P
and it is a word-cross game.
weird.

5:14 PM
plagiarizing, or referencing?

yep, don't know. It does seem like the logo was made by altering Cross one, but I don't know if it would deserve legal actions

Nobody deserves legal actions :P
You'll spend years and thousands of dollars arguing before a public figure who shot first, and then they tell you the plaintiff is insolvent anyways - and if something happens to them, now the courts know you have a motive

@JohnDvorak depends. The dudes that keep flooding the app stores with "minecraft crazycraft 3d full" and such I could do without :P

Eh. Maybe at one point a playable clone will pop out. Now the perfectly legal thousandth clone of merge battle car / pickup truck / car robot / airplane but actually car, those definitely won't be playable ever.
How many versions of tripeaks solitaire but unfair are there on Play Store?
Those copycrafts are legal, BTW. You can't copyright the idea, just the assets.

5:47 PM
@JohnDvorak The point is not the "copy", it is the fact that many try to disguise as the original
If it is called mineblock but still makes it clear "this is not minecraft" ok, fine.... The ones that annoy me are the scammers that try to get people to download the fake version of popular games by using similar icons, titles and so on.
