@Rob Farmers always take care of their animals, as very simply it's expensive to have animals that aren't well

They only get paid after they deliverd their animals to the butchers, at which point a price is negotiated

The costs are already made, as you pay for feed and bedding etc.

But at some point it becomes too expensive to keep the animals longer to wait for a better price

as they need more and more feed

If the farmers can't earn a certain amount of money they would only remain a farmer for the love of farming, certainly not for the money.

For them it isn't just a job or a company, but its a way of life

If you calculate how much they earn per hour worked, their severely underpaid.

Decades ago when I left the computer industry, because people didn't want to pay $100's of dollars per hour (and many were willing to work for next to nothing), I simply took up a different profession; and now benefit from inexpensive computers.

If the farmers grew Ginseng (as one example) or Llamas (as one other) they would still be farmers and earn more. --- If they raised free range organic fed Kobe chicken they could earn more and still be chicken farmers. --- If they raised donkeys and sold them for a high price they would not sell their ass for cheap.

Well there's the balance of adjusting your cost of production to include finding the elusive purchasers versus the cost of simply selling for too little; and obviously not charging extra to sell for less (defeating the low cost). --- It's easy to find people who want something for nothing, or very little, but what is the value in that; equal, very little.

@Luuklag I think the ridiculous part is how much supermarkets earn. Even the meat with a 'keurmerk' doesn't necessarily mean the farmer gets more... just that the farmer was made to live up to more rules/make more costs/pay for the 'keurmerk'.

My rep is too low for me to see there, but I was testing the theory on MSE; and couldn't find any. Still, I could try Space, Astronomy, etc., where I think that there's some long names and tags.
