that was boring. We have a 24 question pre-test for our annual security course... aced it. Then I realised said annual security course can be hilariously bad

@BunsGlazing Gnome! Hello!

oh no Kenny is dead...
@rene any chance to check and revive poor Kenny? ^

8:11 AM
@Shadow10YearsWizard Can you please add meta.stackexchange.com/questions/280742/… to the duplicate list of meta.stackexchange.com/questions/356834/…, per my comment there?

40 messages moved to Chimney

8:50 AM
So does chat work again?

for me it does, yes

Yeah I don't get a retry now
So hopefully you guys will only read my messages once today ;)

Bold assumption to make, that we actually read them once.

Yep thanks for the confidence booster @Tinkeringbell

You're welcome! :D

8:57 AM
Shouldn't we move the question about the skeptics chat-room off to meta skeptics?

@Luuklag Nah.
The OP of that one already asked on skeptics main, I flagged that one for migration to meta on their site.
And they apparently also asked in another chatroom, according to the comments.

hmmm needy much...

@Luuklag nope. We don't see a word you are writing
:D

haha
@SmokeDetector k

@Luuklag Nicely entertaining question though, can recommend browsing for a while :P

9:11 AM
It's too early for that xD

You're right, it's still only Thursday...

I see a lot of posts flagged as spam conatin R-HUB. Is that some new program that 1 rep users post about?

yes
they've been spamming for years unfortunately
and no, not new, there's been spam for that from before I was a mod

@SmokeDetector I find those reports tricky, as they try to answer the question, but are VLQ. Take this example @JourneymanGeek

9:20 AM
@Luuklag "they try to answer the question" - in terms of quick reg-ex searches :D
and this is one of those situations where I do admit context helps

Well yeah, its not blatant enough for any outsider to warrant a spam flag
But thanks for the insight, Ill spam flag them from now on.

which is a good thing about crowdsourced spam-removal :D
there's enough people who see the name and know its a spammer
If I had close-vote rights on AU, I might also close the question as a product rec

I just custom flagged it :)
Shouldnt smokey send feedback after a report?\

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog no, OP deleted the question.
@Luuklag not here, unless it's already reported.

@Shadow10YearsWizard ok thx

Just reposting this here for spreading news. Apparently there are already reports of bricked PS5 consoles due to a bug that corrupts the internal storage and makes the console unable to boot up. Some reports claims this may be tied to Rest Mode, so disabling it --may-- help reduce the chances of the issue happening. Also it seems that the issue already happened to some Youtubers who received preview units.
I don't have any way to check any of this other than random news on the web.... Anyway, take care if you planned to buy a PS5 now.
In case someone was planning to get a PS5

My PS4 almost died when I used its "Auto Sleep" feature. I disabled it right away. Pity they don't learn from past mistakes/bugs.

I'm not ready for the advanced stuff. I get a PS1 first
2

lol
@rene actually, this is the first:

I only own an Xbox360, rarely use it
@Shadow10YearsWizard probably more expensive then a PS5 today ;)

yeah, let me see...

9:45 AM
I have my Nintendo Switch and a PC, I don't think I really need more XD

@Shadow10YearsWizard this appears to be the first commercial available gaming thing: ebay.com/itm/1972-Odyssey-by-Magnavox-Run-1/…

For certain values of "gaming"
the thing had basically no graphics.
You had transparent overlay sheets you had to apply on the TV

ooh, that's beautiful

the "controller" (notice, there is no control sticks, only some knobs for left-right and up-down) basically moved a light dot on the screen

9:58 AM
I want one now.

obviously, there was no game logic since the dot couldn't interact with the transparent sheet.
Take that "race course" you can see in the picture above.
Basically, you "played" by moving the dot along the course, but there was no logic that forced you to keep the dot inside the course in the first place.

You know what that means? It's infinitely moddable!

@JohnDvorak also means that you could play the same by just owning the overlays and applying them to one of those Etch a Sketch boards. Well, not quite actually, but I think you see the similarities.

You'd need to mod the Etch-a-sketch with a backlight, presumably
frankly, that would be a cool mod per se

anyway, for fun... this channel seem to showcase some of the games
notice that some "Games" are actually board games with added artificial difficulty due to the console making them LESS easy to play.
This is basically Japanese Uta-garuta played on a console with knobs...

10:15 AM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе Which is good, because most board games are boringly easy :P

@Tinkeringbell well, this one
seem to be similar to Risk. But instead of having dice-based battles, it tries to use the console to handle how many units each player loses.

!!/watch-number +919987686385

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog You don't have blacklist manager privileges, but I've created PR#5129 for you.

I do like the non-violent nature of these games, however

If you look at HOW the battle goes, you will see that it is actually quite hard to understand if the "ball"managed to get past the defense or not. And that probably would cause "fights" between the kids.
@JohnDvorak Well, the one I just posted is basically Risk, so "war strategy game".

10:20 AM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе I may take a good look later... right now I technically am supposed to be working so I can't watch youtube ;)

It is not a "Call of Duty", but the idea is still "kill the enemy forces"

Chat mini-challenge: reskin Risk to not be war themed

@JohnDvorak make it pandemic themed :D

That's ... better ig
To be fair... even Monopoly causes plenty of out-of-game violence if you play it on the competitive level while the rest are just trying to enjoy the game :D

@JohnDvorak isnt that with any game xD

10:24 AM
my point

how many times I've seen a monopoly or risk bord been thrown to the sky by my younger siblings when they were losing

@Luuklag Mensch ärgere Dich nicht

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе yeah also such a classic

@Luuklag I had a small - VERY small - version of that.

travel edition xD

10:27 AM
Sold with a pair of tweezers to move the tokens.

ooh, any photos?

the whole bard... probably about 3cm side.

O_O

@JohnDvorak Don't really know where that ended up. Probably still lingering in some box.

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе We do have a version of this that's played with cards instead of dice... it's more fun that way as you can also block or hinder other people :P

10:38 AM
The Czech version allows capture... and requires a six to leave the starting area, and an exact value to enter the end zone.

Yeah, I think those are general rules?
Though now that I think about it, we used to require a 6 to be allowed to put a pawn on the board/start position, not leave it.

@Luuklag huh! Cheap. ;)

@Tinkeringbell that's what I meant

Same rules then :D

is English the only language that doesn't call it Don't Be Angry, Man?

10:42 AM
The playing card version has similar ones, you can still capture and you need an A or K to be allowed to put a pawn on the board. The only difference is that depending on who you play with, you either need an exact value to enter the end zone, or you can walk in and then move e.g. the last 2 later...
@JohnDvorak I don't know... :P I know in Dutch the name is similar to the German... mens-erger-je-niet

@JohnDvorak Pineapples are confusing. Literally translated, they'd be the same as the Dutch word for pinecone.
I need to think about which one of the two I need embarrassingly often.
@JohnDvorak I got you a Polish one:
in The Awkward Silence on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 28 secs ago, by lila
@Tinkeringbell It is called what translates to "Chinese man", but I looked on Wikipedia to check out what you were talking about about being angry or upset because it made no sense, then I clicked that oh, indeed, I remember from supermarkets that some brand named it what would translate to "man, don't be irritated!" and it made completely no sense and that's why I remembered it, now it is all clear for me :D

0_0
@Tinkeringbell I know it as ludo
Ludo (; from Latin ludo 'I play') is a strategy board game for two to four players, in which the players race their four tokens from start to finish according to the rolls of a single die. Like other cross and circle games, Ludo is derived from the Indian game Pachisi, but simpler. The game and its variations are popular in many countries and under various names. == History == Pachisi was created in India in the 6th century. The earliest evidence of this game's evolution in India is the depiction of boards on the caves of Ellora. The original version is also described in Indian epic Mahabharata...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's English :P

also that game kinda is cursed and caused a war :D

10:57 AM
technically wouldn't it count as gambling, since there is no element of skill?

@JohnDvorak well luck I guess
\o/!

I'm curious about the war bit

@JohnDvorak basically the kauravas cheated, and the pandavas were sore losers, and lots of war

ah, gotcha

@JohnDvorak Did you mean: ah, gatcha?

11:00 AM
> Mensch ärgere dich nicht (Mate, Don't Get Angry), is a German game from 1914 and has equivalent names in Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian, Macedonian, Greek, Romanian, Polish, Turkish, Czech, and Slovak.

Gatcha Gacha (Japanese: ガッチャガチャ) is a shōjo manga by Yutaka Tachibana. The story centers on the struggling high school girl Yuri Muroi. The series was licensed in English by Tokyopop, with the first volume released on March 7, 2006, and the eighth volume released in December 2010. == Story == Yuri Muroi, a promiscuous girl with a reputation among the male student body, has just broken up with her eleventh boyfriend; her previous boyfriends have always dumped her. She soon meets playboy Yabe Takahiro, and begins to think he might be her true love. Yabe, however, decides the only girl he will date...

I don't read manga or watch anime, but the stuff people link make me suspect that every girl in such things is called 'Yuri'.

@JohnDvorak portuguese is 'don't be upset' :D i have it at home

@Shadow10YearsWizard he mentioned "Gambling", so the joke was on gatcha games. Those are the games where you "gamble" to win units/characters from a loot-box style vendor, usually paying with real money.
Quite popular in some countries. The name "gatcha" derives from the onomatopoeia of the sound made by the capsule-toys vending machines
Called "gatcha-machines" in Japan for that same reason.
@Tinkeringbell Go and tell that to Memor-X on the Anime board, I dare you :P.
anyway, thanks to BESW on RPG...

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе Feel free to copy-paste ;)

@JohnDvorak closest one I could find:
I remember the round pieces (compared to the standard "conical" ones". My packaging was different, but I guest it is the same product.
also this one

I would suggest miniature chess, but dogs have a history of eating unwelcome queens...

12:11 PM
@JohnDvorak non-a-miniature, but would at least solve the other problem

is that chocolate?

now it's even more of an issue if a dog eats the queen

@JohnDvorak you never said it was @Journeyman who ate the queens!

🤤

12:19 PM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе burps royally

World Toilet Day (WTD) is an official United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Worldwide, 4.2 billion people live without "safely managed sanitation" and around 673 million people practice open defecation. Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". In particular, target 6.2 is to "End open defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene)". When the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 was published, United Nations Secretary-General...

Logo image stolen from here:
The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) is a bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin, usually placed on a stone pedestal. The work shows a nude male figure of heroic size sitting on a rock resting on his chin on one hand as though deep in thought, often used as an image to represent philosophy. There are about 28 full-sized castings, in which the figure is about 73 inches high, though not all were made during Rodin's lifetime and under his supervision. There are various other versions, several in plaster, and studies and posthumous castings exist in a range of sizes. Rodin first conceived the figure as part...

@Tinkeringbell WUT?! Virus Waanzin! Where can I find a politician to scold

@rene I'd try Twitter or Instagram. Most of them aren't young enough for TikTok.

@Rob I mean, that's how a lot of people used toilets before smartphones :P
My favorite artwork these days is a sculpture called 'saved by the whale's tail'... Because this happened: youtube.com/watch?v=xkqTTDEFxGg

@Tinkeringbell It explains:
World Philosophy Day is an international day proclaimed by UNESCO to be celebrated every 3rd Thursday of November. It was first celebrated on 21 November 2002. By celebrating World Philosophy Day each year, on the third Thursday of November, UNESCO underlines the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual. UNESCO has always been closely linked to philosophy, not speculative or normative philosophy, but critical questioning which enables it to give meaning to life and action in the international context. In establishing World Philosophy...
Which is also today, this year.

@Tink Hope you're hungry: meta.stackexchange.com/q/356850/622284

Definitely. My manager is keeping me from dinner until 6PM

>:( Managers.

Lovely breed of people, if you ask me.
Let's have a meeting starting at 4:30
It's 4:33 now and we still haven't started.
No wonder we never finish on time ...

Most of the meetings I've been a part of could have been e-mails or another form of e-correspondence.
But nah, instead we all gathered into a room, bickered for upwards of 2 hours, and left with a sense of lost time.

@Tinkeringbell thanks!

3:34 PM
Now, naturally, I don't care too much. I get paid hourly still, but
If we're talking about efficiency... this ain't it.

I've just left an MS Team meeting ...started at 14:00 so I'm good now.

I mean, I would be happy to spend 1,5 hours doing this team nonsense, but... it's not really paid hourly. It's the one thing that I'm really dissatisfied about with this company: They 'rent' me to a client for 40 hours a week, so that client is kinda expecting 40 hours of productivity.

At the same time they expect me to do about 1 or 2 of these meetings a week, and either fudge the hours I worked for the client a bit or do it in my free time :/

:/ That's lame.

Yeah, technically these 1,5 hours are overtime and should be payed extra...

Yeah in the US you could probably claim that/take it to court or to the IRS or... something. Not too fluent in the how, I just now that you're not allowed to do that here. Kind of a big no-no.

3:38 PM
I might one day just switch jobs, it's not really worth my effort to take it to court, I guess.

I think you should start looking now if that's something you're considering.
Naturally the pandemic is an awful time to do it
Especially during this awful third wave
But better now than later I would think

@Spevacus Yes and no. The problem with this one is... it's really, really stable and has quite a nice package of benefits (car, health insurance). I kinda want to keep it until my apartment is built, and I've lived there full time for a month or 3 minimum. Just so I know what my expenses are, and what I can miss if I e.g. can't keep the car.

That's totally fair.

So, apartment and good grip on income/expenses first, then looking for something so I can be sure I'll also end up financially equal/better :)
O.o let's start the super-duper-dont-you-dare-cancel-meeting with watching photographs.

Ah yes.
An excellent use of our introductory period.

3:46 PM
introductory? We're 15 minutes into a 1,5 hour meeting. I'm betting there is no end to this before the first half hour is up.
Next time, no matter what the invite says, I'm cancelling.
Big fan of meeting cancel culture here.

Super-duper-dont-you-dare-cancel-meeting-if-you-cancel-you're-fired will be the next one's title

I'm afraid so, yes.

@Tinkeringbell lol. Same place I am in 😁

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, though at this rate your apartment will be finished before mine ;)

😁
There's been no update on the photo since July

3:53 PM
Ah. Mine is stagnated since late August.
When the a-hole went broke ;)

Ow
Well mine is gov built

@Tinkeringbell my first contract was 37,5 hours but it was mandated to work 40, billable.

@JourneymanGeek Even governments can go broke ;)
@rene Ouch :(

@Tinkeringbell then that would be the least of my worries 😁

I know ;)

4:02 PM
I would be out maybe 15k, 10k of which is a government grant 😁

Mine is covered by insurance (should the new contractor need more money than I agreed upon with the previous one, the entire gap is covered). :D

I came to say hello and then disappeared. My bad.

thank you
Have not been here in a while

@Spevacus Good news: at least it managed to finish 10 minutes early.

Woohoo! Efficiency!

5:32 PM
Don't they already have two suspended profiles?

They have many.

@Spevacus Doh!
I saw them. Won't a few... mysteriously disappear?

A lot of them are just destroyed on sight, yeah.

Haven't been here long. How many spam flags have I missed?

@Ollie Spam? Maybe a couple. Rude or abusive? A fair few.
Edited because waffles.

5:36 PM
Wowee.
That's more red flags than I've ever had to raise.
Just followed about every new post in an attempt to catch 'em at it.
@Spevacus Where are mine?

@Shadow10YearsWizard Like we need slanting commodes?
Think I'll rephrase that.

A question:
I know the Community user on SO has the "Not a Robot" badge as a joke (presumably)
But won't that cause some confusion?

i mean
if you search a little bit you can find some evidence of said confusion

Oh
Another question:
Is Community's profile (on main sites, not Metas) updated manually?
By the devs.

@Shadow10YearsWizard welcomes glazed buns regardless, of anything

Due to a bug, views to the Community user's profile get counted toward user ID 1's profile instead

So on Stack Overflow, quite a few of Jeff Atwood's profile views have actually instead been the Community user's profile views

So Jeff isn't quite that popular?

Q: Why is a robot getting a badge that states it is not a robot?

AdriaanWith the first batch of people to receive the Not a Robot badge, I was surprised to see Community receiving one as well. Does this mean I will be able to meet the fabled Community in person?
