@NordTheLoftyWizard Welcome back.

2/ I agree with you, there is a lot more we can do celebrate and understand our community. We have been releasing the community roadmap so you can hold us accountable to our promises. We are hiring on the community side, and while we may encourage applicants with certain experience, we do consider all resumes. Finding the best candidates takes time, especially with so much of everyday life still turbulent. Rest assured, I consider the community the foundation and vital part of Stack and plan to continue investing in its health and growth. — Prashanth Chandrasekar 2 days ago
That last sentence is nice to hear.

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog well - we have heard stuff that sounded good - but it's also important to remember how quickly stuff can change. There's a reason I sounded off about the specific issue even if rectified
It's probably going to be tough for someone to justify leaving a safe CM role elsewhere considering it's a team that was downsized recently
Interest in the job from mods is almost non existent :(
And usually the process started sooner than it has now. Usually I'd have gotten a rejection letter within 2 weeks of the job opening going up. I applied about 2 weeks after and am waiting on feedback.

If I may point yours and others' attention to our prior chat conversation: many mods who chose not to sign the new agreement didn't actually disagree with a specific point of it, but with the fact that they had to sign some new agreement in the first place. — Sonic the K-Day Hedgehog 1 min ago
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog Please don't insult Jenkins anymore. — Knight wants Loong back 42 secs ago
Would like additional opinions: was my comment insulting to that person?
If so, I'll delete it.

Well, I don't think it is. It looks like you're stating facts, assuming you're told by former mods that that was the reason they didn't sign. If you're just repeating hearsay then your comments isn't helping and might be insulting to some (for keeping rumors around)

@rene A bit later in the chat conversation, I provided a link to where they specifically said that, so the assumption is correct.

In general that question has a problem: it rules out participation of a certain group up-front. That is often a sign it tries to steer the outcome of the discussion. That doesn't feel right. If your comments don't help the goal of the OP you can expect push back. Red flagging comments and trying to get others to do the same is good tactic then. Leave it to the MSE mods to handle and sit back and watch. Not worth much of your time.

Yeah, I threw a "needs more focus" close vote since I felt answers to it would be too drawn out.
Other than that, I won't participate in the question further.

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog no. But who is Jenkins?

8:19 AM
@Shadow10YearsWizard The person linked in the chat conversation.

@Shadow10YearsWizard build server ...

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I'm confused. Don't see any person linked there. :/

See "provided a link" above

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog oh, OK, to mod going through same process on Pets. How did you insult him?

8:22 AM
I did not; see rene's messages above.

@Rob Thanks :D
@Shadow10YearsWizard yeah, just checked. still a good answer ;)
@rene had the same thought

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I'm admittedly tempted to answer but - no real point in letting OP get more worked up than they already are. Comments have even less nuance...
the community can deal with this with appropriate votage, and I'll keep a follow on this in case I need to drop ice water on an arguement.

Q: How to use flags on appplication that use env?

Nordine LotfiI'm using env in a shell script like so: #!/usr/bin/env bash ... ... Mainly so my scripts are more portable. Anyway, i noticed that adding arguments to application that use env doesn't always work... #!/usr/bin/env bash -x ... ... yield /usr/bin/env: ‘bash -x’: No such file or directory /usr/bi...

ah, posted the post earlier to ask a question regarding handling dupes, but already found my answer :D nvm

@NordTheLoftyWizard yay!

I'm kinda wondering if I should work this into my answer to the latest CEO post/my input on CM hiring but...
that feels like something SE can crib from
and tbh, If I ever get into a reddit community, that sounds facinating ;D
and that feels "broadly" CMish

I once heard there was "paid" position as mods on reddit, but not sure if it's related

Probably would get an incentive to prevent feeling "burn out" though (when being mods i mean)

1:39 PM
Well yes and no
There's a certain amount of stuff mods can do "in community" but often problems have a broader area of effect than just one site
Its not an issue with SE but you might also sometimes have issues with an entire community

@JourneymanGeek Reddit is.... well, take Stack Exchange, multiple amount of sites and users by 100, decrease quality by 99%, and increase trolls level by 1000. Not something anyone wants to, or can, really moderate. IMO
(in big scale, I mean. Of course each sub-reddit can moderate itself pretty well, otherwise Reddit would be gone long ago.)
I honestly don't believe anyone can fit that role, or survive in it more than few days.

@Shadow10YearsWizard I've worked in some pretty shitty places :D

@Shadow10YearsWizard that explain why it is a paid position :D

@JourneymanGeek still, surely smaller than Reddit as whole.

@NordTheLoftyWizard cause its hard :D
@Shadow10YearsWizard but shittier

1:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek I mean, at least you were probably paid for it...many others do these kind of things for free and then get burn out later on :/

@JourneymanGeek from my very limited experience in Reddit.... I'm sure there are really dark places in there.

@JourneymanGeek I never said it wasn't :P Sorry if this was misinterpreted

@Shadow10YearsWizard I know the landscape here. I don't know reddit well enough :D
and !!! that might mean REGULAR SLEEPING HOURS.

@JourneymanGeek Evil Never Sleep
It's trivial knowledge. ;)
So Anti Evil warrior also can't ever sleep.
Plus, it's only one single Anti Evil person against millions of evil people using Reddit.

2:13 PM
@Shadow10YearsWizard my schedule is horrible :(

Rob
@JourneymanGeek I know someone who worked in the sewer treatment plant, maintaining the pumps. There's nothing "butt shittier" than that.

Anyway the point being - it's a better, more inclusive description of requirements on a broadly similar job 😁

2:28 PM
@JourneymanGeek still, surely you sleep at some point.... :)
@Rob the people who unclog sewers. Can't beat that, for sure. :P
There are blockades of wet wipes, for example.

@Shadow10YearsWizard ugh.
Not well
It's like constantly switching time zones

2:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek ouch. Because of unusual work hours? Or something else?
I don't sleep a lot (4-5 hours per night) but out of choice (can sleep 6 hours if I want) and on the same hours every time, so I'm fine.

@Shadow10YearsWizard A simple clean video that shows nothing unsettling and gives an oversimplified explanation of what's involved.

for some reason, in all the documentation i seen or live stream on the news (that show sewers), it's somehow always dry and "clean".

So much so, sometimes they held some special thing in there, like painting (happened once or twice).

Though i can't vouch for the smell as i never been there myself...
@Shadow10YearsWizard sounds like me :P though i sleep a bit more randomly, but usually similar hours range

@Shadow10YearsWizard yes

Q: How to show a line number in bash TUI?

Nordine LotfiI'm trying to add support for line number on a bash project i like (mainly as a fun exercise). To start, i looked into the function that was setting up the status line (since i thought of inspiring myself from it, since it would be printing a constant line, at the bottom of the window, horizontal...

think this is the most specific question i asked (yet)
btw, did anyone here ever felt like "i could ask on irc and get my answer but don't feel like it" for a question that still doesn't have any answer on SE/SO?

3:43 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard I once asked a question in SF... Then got my answer on a mailing list and posted it back

Rob
@NordTheLoftyWizard I've been a few blocks away, it smells awful.

@JourneymanGeek I'm thinking of doing this a lots for question i asked on emacs.SE and vi.SE since, a couple still don't have an answer...(and asking on the respective github as issues usually take too long or don't yield any helpful answer, depending on the subject)
I don't particularly hate irc, but i don't really like it, mainly because on how the account system/handling is awful, and always nearly rely on third party (which, i don't mind if it's done like SO does, but, in irc case, there just too much options for third party, and it's unsure which is the best unless you try them all or stick to "reviews")
@Rob o-o wow

4:01 PM
Irc has no account system

@JourneymanGeek by that, i mean, when someone want to use freenode (as in registering, there other alternative site beside freenode) or using shell account...

Rob
@NordTheLoftyWizard Have you tried adding "\#" to the prompt? (to display the current command number). Examples: thegeekstuff.com/2008/09/…

@Rob oh, i think that's mostly for the prompt (my question mostly relate to TUI, as in, text interface in bash). Though that link does have some interesting use of printf that i didn't know... :D

I sure hope that the topics for this block of two months get posted in 6-8 days rather than 6-8 weeks this time. Last time, they were posted just at the beginning of the literal 6-8 week period, which meant they were only up to date for two weeks.
