@Tinkeringbell I wouldn't exactly want to season physical things with electronics
@JourneymanGeek I agree with the trickling edits (I had only edited two questions and was planning to only edit two at a time), but I don't think we needed an explicit request in this case. The tag had already been clearly defined in its wiki to refer to the 5-minute editing grace period, but people were misusing it for the bounty grace period, and another tag already existed for that concept.
tl;dr: it wasn't a burnination, but a retag, so a burninate request would be improper :)

2:04 AM
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog we always need a explicit request :D
also... burnination permit is funnier ._.
the reasoning is that we don't really want people, even mods, unilaterally deciding a tag is not ok, or needs to be
we want a paper trail, metaphorically speaking, we can point at for the reasoning, and objections, or lackthereof, including a reasonable but not onerous waiting period

@JourneymanGeek need to lock meta.stackexchange.com/posts/355809/revisions or ban OP

@Pandya next time, flags are good :D
Its settled

Ok. Thanks

3 hours later…
4:43 AM
That looks almost like someone trying to use meta as a pastebin ._.

5:14 AM
@Feeds Huh, seems like Nicolas Chabanovsky's IP address was blocked on SO before being hired as an employee
By the way, it's finally winter in San Diego after what appeared to be an eternal summer

Apparently from that podcast, I should be emailing Prasanth every week until they hire me, or send me a restraining order. Gotcha.

@JourneymanGeek well it were only 10, that still leaves 40 other questions at the front page. Seeing the current activity thats still about 2 days of regular questions present.

5:49 AM
Lol. I once spent 6 months trickling edits on a tag 😁
I did like 8 edits a day on SU spread over 4 hours

@Feeds imagining a localized site "Stack Overflow in Chinese", but blocked in China...

@MetaAndrewT. Intended for Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan users and overseas users
The SARs of China don't have internet censorship...yet

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I think he's thinking about the irony

I thought so too

I find this comment from Adam extremely funny: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/355805/…
That is a good start of my day.

By the way, let me define "winter in San Diego": the days become colder, with literally no other change in anything else (rain/snow/precipitation, humidity, etc.) Only in most years it's a gradual transition. However, this year, it was a sudden transition, with yesterday becoming suddenly cold and sustaining today, with the previous week being as hot as summer.
@JourneymanGeek Based on your proximity to the Equator, I assume that's how winters are like in Singapore too

7:28 AM
Just two days ago we were running the air conditioner. Today, though, we're running the furnace.

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog You don't have blacklist manager privileges, but I've created PR#5092 for you.

sdc approve 5092

7:45 AM
Huh, was wondering why it didn't alert me to it here

Just want to confirm, is my recent question really deleted?

Was it flagged or you people were online by yourselves?
By the way, thanks for confirmation

Does it matter?

Yeah

7:49 AM
I understand people are upset moderators are having their diamonds revoked for not accepting the new agreement, but those moderators weren't 'fired' and they knew the consequences of their actions.

Yeah
Can I ask one more question?

sure :)

Why discussion of that topic is prohibited by those who agree to the new agreements?

just a sec, work call

@Knight If I may add, another thing about the new moderator agreement:
@AndrewLeach The relationship between SE and moderators has always been "do what we tell you; if you don't, you may not be a moderator." Moderators have been and always will be "at will", even more than employees. What the new moderator agreement did in that regard was A) make it more clear that was so; B) make it clearer what moderators could not be dismissed for; and C) made it such that any such requirements have to be public, rather than previously permitted private requirements. Overall, the new mod agreement is much better for moderators. It's only the perception that's worse. — Makyen Oct 18 at 1:24
Also, the previous agreement forbade discussion of private info to anyone, so one could theoretically be removed simply for discussing private info with other mods. The new agreement removes that hole.
Finally, at least one mod who resigned over the new agreement stated that they did so not because they disagreed with some provision written in it, but because they disagreed that they had to sign a new agreement (regardless of what provisions it actually contained).

8:00 AM
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog huh? Just because they have to sign once again?

@Knight Quoting from their resignation "letter":
> I can't see how a new agreement on my part is going to improve SE's performance, therefore I will not be accepting it.

even then those who resigned over what was written in it serve a more interesting data point than those who resigned just because there's a new one, don't they.

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog Well, a lot of different interpretations can be made on that. But let’s not discuss it. Tell me, how are you?

@Knight uh, I read your post, and it seems... overwrought.

@JourneymanGeek you read it? Overwrought, how?

8:05 AM
At the end of the day, being a moderator is both voluntary and there's some responsibilities attached.
Basically - we have a new mod agreement, that while not perfect addresses many of the changes that have occured in the decade or so since the last one
Agreeing to the mod agreement is and always has been a precondition of moderating.

and yet it causes mods to leave - and we don't want mods to leave

Its not a situation where someone was uncermoniously dumped for wrongdoing

true

@JohnDvorak eh, lots of other contributing factors that I feel are more important

Can a mod be removed for not signing an agreement? Yes. But can a mod be removed for asking my private part’s size?

8:07 AM
Also yes

Then let me paste it here.

you should probably escalate that via contact us, with evidence
and let the CMs handle it though
This isn't really the place for it

in English Language & Usage: Multi-Layered Discourse Room on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 11 hours ago, by RegDwigнt
@Knight I'm curious, how could you believe something that stupid?

Well, how could you?

I experienced it.
It works fine.

8:09 AM
and in context, it was a poor joke but hardly harassment
If someone did ask an impertinant question with "i'm curious..."
I'd invoke vegas rules here. What happens there stays there. If you have an issue with a mod please escalate it via the contact us link

@JourneymanGeek okay, but you hardly reply.

There's an explicit option in the contact form for reporting Code of Conduct violations

I'm curious to why you're want to drag an issue across chat servers, but not that curious.
and full context is important.
I'm curious why you're not mention that you started with
in English Language & Usage: Multi-Layered Discourse Room on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 17 hours ago, by Knight
Today I learned, writing "I'm curious" before a personal question makes it polite :)

I said it to Cowper

I mean, its entirely useful context in deciding what's happening

8:11 AM
Because I asked him a personal question “how did you know that word?”

and I'm also curious to how you'd not expect something said in a public chatroom to have people respond.

I’m curious, why other public forums don’t respond explicitly?
Even here every one is formal

well, often we just tend to act like that. Its quite lovely and civil.
and its a chatroom, its explicitly designed to be our one social space

In a nutshell, whatever Reg said was quite nice and should be encouraged.

more that you may not want to drag that issue in here, and address him, directly and let him know you found that part of it offensive.
Or if you felt harassed, well, yeah
but none of this has to do with mods quitting

8:17 AM
Answer this one and I will leave
24 mins ago, by Knight
Why discussion of that topic is prohibited by those who agree to the new agreements?

There is no prohibition
However, tone is pretty important
49
Q: The new moderator agreement is now live for moderators to accept across the network

CatijaToday, we’re announcing that the new moderator agreement is live and the existing moderators are being asked to accept it. This has been a great collaboration to get from a draft in November 2019 to the final agreement in July 2020. It’s gone through several phases of review internally, including...

you will find much discussion
If you have issues with SPECIFIC ASPECTS of the mod agreement, while its late, you could bring it up, as a mod or otherwise

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I got that.
It’s nice line. “Tone is important”

@JohnDvorak in addition to the elephant in the room, lets see...
SE's generally cut network support to the bone over time. They've repeated mistakes they made before. Some mods don't feel safe, and quit....
4
a few feel burnt out, or loose interest or...
I know a few ragequit to codidact and that's fine, other than ragequitting.
all this, well, can be fixed
but its no one thing, and unless you have a specific beef with some part of the agreement, it is almost never just the new mod agreement.
also, SE has a lot of work to do to do right by their volunteers. Its easy to curse the dark - and just rage rage against the night. But sometimes, its good to shine a light, and understand the whole situation

8:34 AM
@Knight Discussion implies there's something to discuss. If you have questions about the new agreement or something that's fine, but if you just want to rant that you find it unfair someone else didn't agree and faced the well-known consequences, that's not a discussion.

1 hour later…
9:42 AM
@Knight This was clearly an overreaction on your part. Reg was being silly.
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog Also a point made by Faded Giant
@JourneymanGeek Do not go gentle into that good night
Rage rage against the dying of the light
Bring bring some machine guns with yourself
Into The Dead 3
Seriously who decided to go running at night in a zombie apocalypse. It sounds like it belongs in the top shelf of stupid things to do
Right after "not wearing a mask in a deadly potentially airborne epidemic"
It's funny that even though stupid humans have existed throughout the history, even they would be laughing their arse off at this

@M.A.R. ah you caught ONE of the references.

@M.A.R. We should foster that medieval belief about how bad smelling air caused pestilence.

breaks wind
not entirely false.

No more worrying about virusses and vaccines, just wear your mask and you'll be fine.

@JourneymanGeek Oh so you're the fourth horseman
WAIT.
Waiwaiwait.
So the fourth horseman is Pestilence, and people believed bad air caused pestilence
So uh. Pestilence is a guy who only eats bean burritos and tacos?

9:50 AM
the funny thing is in good omens it was pollution
that joke, sadly, hasn't aged well
@M.A.R. no one would accuse me of being a horse.

I'm accusing you of being a minotaur.
Horse-man.

that sounds like bull

Anyway, whoever has an Attenborough deficiency, try this

or Bull Man :D

Don't push your luck

9:53 AM
(I mean, that's what a Minotaur is)

Well something went wrong, error 503 or something, so we're talking about horse-men.

Maybe its a horseless head-man

You need a functioning digestive system to eat bean burritos
Maybe more than that
Horses have longer digestive tracts #fact
It all seems to fit now

11:32 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Why did you add the [highlighting] tag to this revision? meta.stackexchange.com/revisions/355852/3
It is already tagged [syntax-highlighting]

@Luuklag wanted to add highlight.js tag as it's explicitly on that library being used now, but it doesn't exist. And syntax highlight is part of the general highlight, so it seemed fitting.
Didn't think too hard on it, the edit was mainly for a typo and title.
So feel free to remove the tag. ;)

Yeah the tag description is: Use this tag for questions about the highlighting of questions or answers, using special colors.

@Luuklag and? Isn't that what code highlight is doing?

so perhaps we also should just get rid of it all together

Not sure if we really need two tags, yeah.

11:39 AM
well there is the more specific [syntax-highlithing] for that

So go ahead and post burninate request, collect some rep. :D

haha, well looking at it, there is a accepable use, just not this use ;)
its about the highlighting of OP's in comment threads etc.

hmm... oh well.
@ArtOfCode feature request for Smokey: post spam report for posts on MSE here instantly, without the 5 minutes delay. What you think?

Rob
12:00 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask @Luuklag The description of that tag seems clear: meta.stackexchange.com/tags/highlighting/info - It's for SE's coloring; example: Deleted posts are pink. Nothing to do with Syntax Highlighting. - Don't make a Burniate request.

12:35 PM
@Rob I wasn't intending to so.

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Removing the 5 minute delay defeats it's purpose, just add a "-" when reporting outside of CHQ. Example:

yeah @Rob that was my first guess, but then I found out that there is valid use for the tag, as you described. So no burning castles today ;)

Rob
That reply was to Sha, too; incase he went off all Don Quixote on it.

12:40 PM
Well that would be more my thing @Rob, people got mad because I made 10 edits in a row, fixing some tag usage :/

@ShadowWizardWearingMask it's either delay for all or delay for none...

@ArtOfCode how did you get italics in username

Rob
It's also possible to color words and make colored blocks and backgrounds - but they prefer that people don't know how to do that.
^^ RTFaq

Room owners name in italics...

Rob
@Luuklag That only plugs up one tab; a tab people use when they specifically want to know the minutiae. --- Would 2x5 be better, not really; how 'bout 5x2, sure (maybe) but what a lot of time and trouble to wait.

12:55 PM
@ArtOfCode what if there were two separate entries in rooms.yml
(for the same room)

@Rob I did worse. I edited the wiki. ;)
@Luuklag the issue is filling the home page with old questions. Even if valid edits, it annoys many people.
The way is 2-3 edits every time, when you notice there are some new questions in the front page, 2-3 edits more.
Slower, but safer. ;)
@ArtOfCode thought it posts instantly on Charcoal room, then here with delay of 5 minutes. No?

Rob
"With great power there must also come great responsibility", or simply "With great power comes great responsibility", alternatively known as the Peter Parker principle, is a proverb popularized by the Spider-Man comic books written by Stan Lee, though clearly conceptually dating from (at the latest) 1793, during the French Revolution. That formulation is used by journalists and book authors, in politics, monarchic rhetoric, law enforcement, public safety, and in various media. == History == The origins of the phrase pre-date its use in Spider-Man, though its exact origins are unknown. In a Plan...

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Yes, but the delay is set per-room

@QueenieGoldstein true. and mods/staff are blue.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask not for me... ;)

1:02 PM
I do wonder.... does a user with staff bit (and indication on profile) but without a diamond will have blue color here? Pretty sure the answer is "no" but not 100% sure. Ideas?

don't think so

Who can we ask to test it? ;)
@Mithical well code can be changed to allow what I asked for... :D
@Mithical you gave up your diamond, you could be blue on se.com chat. :)

I meant I have a script that makes mods green and not blue
plus a script that makes ROs rainbow

ohh lol
@Mithical do show... plz...

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask An unlucky monkey.

1:05 PM

@Rob bad idea, he'll run away
@Mithical awesomeness! :D

Pretty sure rene wrote it :D

@Mithical expected to see my name with some different color too, as part of "Annoying Users" group.... :P
No such feature in the script?

you don't have an "annoying" flag attached to your chat account :p

1:08 PM
.username.annoying doesn't work the same as .username.owner ;)

lovely

@rene is this really your script? You can add groups, to make the script even greater. ;)

Rob
Ironically, the highlight exceeds its boundaries.

hehe
Didn't put much time/thought into it...
Unless you mean the actual script? @Rob ?

Rob
1:11 PM
☝️

@ShadowWizardWearingMask it's under 25 lines of code

shameless plug, anyone interested in a script that changes the background of users to each have a different color? github.com/honnza/drops/blob/master/so-chat-user-colors.user.js

Rob
Then we can all have the same avatar.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask it is not mine

@Rob old... and still few months until then... ;)
@rene oh bummer

Rob
1:13 PM
Not a grouper!

@Mithical no copyright in the code?

no author that I can see
it was written 133 days ago, that's all I can tell you

@JohnDvorak sure, but can you set the color yourself? Or add groups of users? ;)
Looks like it's setting a fixed color per user, based on their ID being used as hash.

it dynamically balances the color so that currently active users get different colors

@Mithical maybe @John's then? Looks like he like messing around with the colors. :)

@JohnDvorak oh didn't go that far in the code. But still, it's not something you can configure.

Locking certain users' colors would be possible if there is interest.

@JohnDvorak self challenge?

@Rob Well there are 50 questions on that list, so 10 edits is only 10%...

If you happen to know a color picker module, I'd be able to make use of it

1:20 PM
@JohnDvorak used to have one, years ago, for a game (?) I wrote... hmm...
It was really crude, but it worked.

otherwise I'll probably just use three sliders and a hex textbox

The game was drawing: you drew stuff on the screen, and could save it to file, then load it later on.

CSS3 should make it easy to create the sliders

you can just use set of some fixed colors, the most common colors. No?
No point spending time on this, IMO.
e.g. let the user choose from 20 colors should be just enough.

eh, creating a color picker sounds fun.

1:22 PM
lol yeah it is.
I even made a "mix" function that calculates the color when two colors "hit" each other.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask And then we have another room named "Among us"

simple sRGB space average, or something more accurate?

@JohnDvorak I don't remember, it was 10+ years ago.

so probably sRGB then :D

Pretty sure something simple, so not very accurate.
@JohnDvorak Yeah. ;)
@QueenieGoldstein ?
Among Wizards?
