@ShadowWizardWearingMask What's really great is the peal of the bell on a phone from a half century ago. Notice after the ring, how the bell reverberates. Better than the meager door chime.

Is anyone else endlessly annoyed by people that are incapable of giving single word answers to questions?
Questions with the only answer should be a number, or "I don't know"
but instead you have to sit and listen to an entire essay before they get around to answering your question
drives me nuts

Rob
Ask, not.

"What is the output of that function, should I feed it this data?"
blah blah blah for 5 minutes as they fill time thinking....

5:56 PM
If the answer is as simple as a number, you ask a mechanical calculator. The time of using people as calculators is long past.

What are the roots of equation x^2=4....only one word/number accepted

Hi everyone!
It's been a while since I was last here
How have we all been?

Locked down, mostly. And there?

lots of skyrim

Also entering a lockdown...yet still somehow going to school in-person
And that's not to mention my mock exams coming in like a week and a bit...ahhh

@user400654 animal crossing here...
I should try skyrim once...
@EleezatheCharacterWizard Blegh, that feeling must suck :(

Yeah, it does
I'm mostly more scared than anything, but hey, it'll be over soon and I'll be back to drawing and working on my own projects and nonsense :)

7:07 PM
Yeah, I can imagine (sort-of). I'm too scared to go to the supermarket, I can't imagine how scary school would be.

School isn't...too sad, at least I still have my best friend with me but some people already are catching the virus

Q: Search changes for anonymous users

Nick CraverWe wanted to share some of what's been happening on the network lately behind the scenes. We do our best to keep fires from being visible but that's not always possible and when it happens my goal is to be as open as possible. In short, we've enabled captchas for anonymous users when they search Q&...

Since I know y'all have been wondering what's up with the site recently.

I guess someone got mad about a downvote and unleashed their bots?

It had to happen eventually.

It looks like my HNQ app is not impacted by this, yet. I'm hitting endpoints as an anonymous user as well. But that is not search.

8:05 PM
I'm worried that this will turn off lot of the would be searchers into asking instead.

SO doesn't allow anonymous asking, does it?

i mean
define anonymous

Not having an account. ;-)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask New job, less time, way more money, you know the drill

I was reading this answer. Does this apply to user profiles fetishizing rape?

i mean
i don't see how it wouldn't

I thought so too, but I found a lot of other Meta posts talking about the "leeway afforded to user profiles"
I'll drop a mod flag on one of their posts then.

TLDR flag it and let a mod decide
it's what they're there for

Thank you

10:05 PM
Usually the leeway is afforded to political statements or self-promotion that would have no business in questions/answers, rather than plainly offensive content. For what you describe, it probably depends on the details.

So I remember later - I had a conversation with a fellow mod over some stuff he needed on his site and an unwillingness to raise a ticket cause the CMs were busy. Being able to capture work that was 'lost' that way as well as other tasks that fell by the wayside cause there simply wasn't bandwidth would be useful for a workload audit. Don't just consider what is done now - consider what should be. — Journeyman Geek ♦ 5 hours ago
@Jou, I suspect many lifetimes of work was lost to what's humorously been called 6-8 weeks. --- I simply remember that it's not my site, and that they can choose to fix it, or not. --- When something's extra important I'm certain to mention it; when something's not so important I won't be typing it in, for the several follow-up questions one sometimes has to fend off (while the person you are writing to totally got it the first time). --- The result is that my bug reports usually get dealt
with in a few hours - because I'm a low consumer of bandwidth.

10:47 PM
@Frank the drill I know also involve kids, and less money. ;)
@SecretAgentMan depends what you mean exactly. Something like "Rape is good" falls under the third bullet in the answer and should indeed be removed.

Rob
11:02 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Remind them to brush their teeth, and no drill; mo' money too.

@Rob this is true

@Rob dentists here are cheap. People come from USA just for dentist, and save money.

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask What you say doesn't come out until the last paragraph of this cautionary tale, the prices are low due to competition; which isn't necessarily a good thing.

What about it?
It's just advertising, not a real article.

^^ It's a tough job, where you work in a pool of drool, with patients who likely have some apprehension and complaint; and all the tools and equipment is very expensive. Going to school for the same length of time to become an Optometrist, Audiologist, Podiatrist, etc. certainly involves a lesser investment in equipment; though because people don't think about preventative maintenance for those things you tend to get a lag on customer intake, they don't show up until it's bad (while with a
toothache they show up pretty quick).
