@user1271772 meaning "of the biochem professors I know, most were very interested in using sites like, and in particular, Chem.SE as a homework help location if questions were formed like this". But due to the backlash and perception that happened in the last years they've moved on to other sites and, as such, were opposed to Teams usage by the university
Despite the huge selling point of directly being able to use MathJax (Tex Math Equation inputs)

12:39 AM
We doing happy hour anymore?

Are you not happy?

Rob

🦗

@JonEricson I could be happy-er...

@JonEricson if I were at home I would have the gladiator meme on hand

That would be entertaining.

1:17 AM
looks forward to being entertained.

1:58 AM
@LinkBerest So you're saying that biochem profs at your university were encouraging students to post homework questions on Chem.SE, but then backlash caused them to switch to other Q/A sites, so now your university is no longer interested in paying for a Teams usage?
@rene So the user created the account to ask that question, then deleted it fewer than 4 hours later?

2:20 AM
@user1271772 I'm saying external resources are always a discussion and SE was becoming more well-known in non-technical circles (including biochem - which was just one example I picked). That SE made a huge mistake not focusing on building up its full (including non-technical) community because those who had used SE's model and liked it - became silent (or actively against) using Teams when it was considered.
This was not the only reason for not using Teams (emoji issues were the final straw) but it was certainly a contributing factor which could have been negated if more focus was given to non-technical sites

2:34 AM
@LinkBerest tbh, the blind focus on SO was maddening :/

2:54 AM
was? I mean when did it stop :P (only semi-serious)

Rob

@LinkBerest I have a lot of opinions on this :D

Oh, great, JNat's not pingable anymore...
@Rob "Processed Meat" doesn't have a gender
@user1271772 I too was wondering the exact same thing at the time I made the last ping. Generally, if a username autocompletes here on chat, that user is pingable, but in the case of the last ping, I decided to double-check and checked /rooms/pingable/89 and JNat was listed.

@user1271772 well, deleted by SE staff. I guess they did use the Contact Us form as I suggested in a now deleted comment and ran into Animuson who nuked both the question and the account by the looks of it. I assume there is a backstory that we don't know and that better stays that way.

@Tinkeringbell nope, just for fun ;-)

Okay then just for fun I'd say it is.

Reminds me of an old case of somebody asking this question repeatedly in rapid succession

@Tinkeringbell ಠ_ʖಠ
@JohnDvorak it's already proved, why bother for a new proof?
I mean you can prove it, new proofs are welcome
But they won't have the same effect

@Arjun This being meta.SE, it logically follows that what you link here wouldn't be of interest to people it's about the topicality of one site. It should be applicable to a broader audience from around the network. There are people from SO, IPS, Chem, SU and Anime here, at a glance
I mean I link to stuff all the time, but it's often for lolz and it's often relatable
@ter @Mag @Rubik loving The Fifth Season so far. There are impeccable analogies to RL so you think, but you don't think you're being fed an opinion. I think the strongest point so far has been that, in a nutshell, the characters aren't the author's puppets to serve some higher purpose in a plot, they're people, they don't have any forced feelings and they don't do anything forced for the sake of the plot. They're complex in their tragedy and their compassion.
And although the story's probably revolving around a single person, there's no single hero or single villain much. The boundaries of the labels seem arbitrary and fade away, and you're just left with the unjustness, the madness, the cruelty that was and is, perpetuated by people probably long dead or simply hiding, and they're irrelevant
Just FYI, actual moderators have little diamonds next to their name. Like me. These actions were taken by people with earned privilegesMachavity ♦ yesterday

@Arjun It depends which way the wind is blowing, there have been times when [long list], but the recent worst (as if that will last) is to do word for word what is asked in the prior comment and the replier doesn't understand the context; without a lengthy explanation, and then ~20% of the time that's fruitless too.

Everything is mostly fruitless

Post on meta and see what happens.

@M.A.R. some site blogs used to do that
and its not actually a bad idea

@JourneymanGeek I think part of the reason newbies lash out at high rep users is feeling eclipsed.

@M.A.R. ah, but its harder to lash out at someone you know

As if earning rep is a competition and they're hopelessly behind everyone else.

It isn't? :D

11:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek Lol do you even read politics.
@JourneymanGeek I now want to serially downvote you until your rep equals mine
It is only fair.

I prefer to get my news from more reliable sources, like rumour and small children.

"Prump is a meanie"

tbh, some politicians do tweet from the grave...

What do Shaolin masters need with the news anyway.

to know what those upstart karetekas are up to.

11:33 AM
Uh, whatever Shaolin is called in India. McDonald's?

also, to work out what the sound of one hand clapping is
@M.A.R. indian martial arts are kinda scary
they have springy belt swords that would just as soon chop your own head off.

No kidding. They have stray monkeys instead of cats and they stare cobras into submission.
Or they post a jillion tutorials on the internet

One of my local cats did too
on how to stare cobras into submission?

@JourneymanGeek Post a jillion tutorials?
Or be a stray monkey?

No
Stare a cobra into submission

11:35 AM
Get out of Singapore
Double checks in own mind: Singapore, Signapore, alright

at least I don't need to worry about cats.

Rob
@M.A.R. It was little more than a week ago when he was giving us a blow by blow of his country's recent election - asking 'hope no one minds', to silence. So I'd say he seems to follow it.

I'm not a cobra

In Persian it's pronounced Sangapoor.
Sanga like manga. And poor like pour.

@Rob well not for a few years anyway
@Rob no one minded. I wasn't asking if anyone was litening

11:37 AM
@Rob Singaporian scandals are cute, is all I know
Check out the US. Being scandalous is fashionable now.
Even DeGeneres bought one.
I never knew her and when everyone was like "she's the coolest person on TV" I was very skeptical. So now I cherish the truth of my superficial and unfounded judgement
It feels really good when being right is effortless.

Wee I voted :D

Like some sort of lottery in the cosmos.

@Rob and that is the most important thing you can do in the political process

I think I'm not gonna vote in our election next year

@M.A.R. meh. You should

11:41 AM
It's become like electing Trump or Romney.

unless they're going to pull the numbers out their ass
in which case you might even if you don't

I kinda lose my right to complain when I don't vote, but not like I had much right in the first place.
Mostly lefts.
@JourneymanGeek I don't think they ever needed to. People are so easy to manipulate.

Rob
As long as you want a #2 it works out.

Those accusations always rung of "Politics for dummies 101" for me. Before complaining about rigged elections, you always have a zillion more visible or effectual things to worry about.

@M.A.R. we have gerrymandering and a system that's rigged fairly well.
But the opposition won another 5 seat ward.

11:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek Good for Gerry

I mean
if everyone sucks equally badly, I'm sorry
but there's often either a less worse option, or you can basically deny the winner as good a margin

I think there's a very narrow window of allowed candidates, and people have no hopes that electing a president will ever fix this crap, because Rouhani got elected twice trumpeting economical recovery as his main campaign promise. People now expect everything to go further into shit everyday, but no one's whispering it because if you say it you'd acknowledge the realization
Very low morale, nothing to build on, and the phony ways the regime ducktaped the economy are beginning to no longer work. The future is bright. Just do it. Coca cola is great.

Can only hope for an anticlimactic ending

oh wow expected to enter an empty room :D

11:54 AM
1 hour later…

@M.A.R. who is Gerry?
Did you mean Jerry?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask He's mandering for some reason
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Both are valid spellings

Usually Tom tries to do nasty stuff to Jerry.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I have, worry not.

@M.A.R. mande what? Googling

11:55 AM
Sidelong look at the messy floor

@ShadowWizardWearingMask why? :D

urg.. even Google doesn't know what's mandering. :(

Verb: mandering
  1. present participle of mander

Got me to something saying it's other form of something which is other form of something else.
@JourneymanGeek great!! What is mander?
lol

@ShadowWizardWearingMask present form of mandering

11:57 AM
Dictionary that says "this word is other form of other word" is useless. Totally.

> Alternative form of maunder

@JourneymanGeek exactly!

Verb: maunder (third-person singular simple present maunders, present participle maundering, simple past and past participle maundered)
  1. To speak in a disorganized or desultory manner; to babble or prattle.
  2. 1834, Maria Edgeworth, Helen, v. 3, ch. V
  3. "Not so fast, Lady Cecilia; not yet;" and now Louisa went on with a medical maundering. "As to low spirits, my dear Cecilia, I must say I agree with Sir Sib Pennyfeather, who tells me it is not mere common low spirits […] "
  4. 1871, Henry James, A Passionate Pilgrim, ch. IV
  5. On the following day my friend's exhaustion had become so great that I began to fear his intelligence altogether broken up. But toward evening he briefly rallied, to maunder about many things, confounding in a sinister jumble the memories of the past weeks and those of bygone years.

@JourneymanGeek nah, I'll just stay in my ignorance. :P

Well, on paper, it saves paper
On the internet, I'm not sure what crossreferencing achieves

@M.A.R. make people annoyed?
No other reason can ever be possible.

Nah, you probably got out of the wrong side of the bed

@M.A.R. I slept one hour more, that must be the reason. :D

probably cause its based off traditional dead tree sources

11:59 AM
The more I sleep, the more annoyed I get.

The worst is when it cross-references and doesn't link to anything. Wiktionary occasionally does do that

Also, still didn't drink the noon coffee, with the cake.

@JourneymanGeek so what @M.A.R. was saying all along is that Gerry is being rude?
Now I just have to find that Gerry and teach him a lesson!

Well gerrymandering is rude

Found him.

When answering, I didn't see any difference between Gerry, Alex, Sally, or Michelle. But I never asked a question... I'd rather scrutinize the Fortran source of LAPACK than ask a question on SO.
Sadly enough, Gerry is already deleted. cries

Grupo Modelo is a large brewery in Mexico that exports beer to most countries of the world. Its export brands include Corona, Modelo, and Pacífico. Grupo Modelo also brews brands that are intended solely for the domestic Mexican market and has exclusive rights in Mexico for the import and distribution of beer produced by Anheuser-Busch. Until the 1960s, Grupo Modelo used red poppy flowers in its advertising, where almost any image it used had poppy flowers somewhere in the image. On June 12, 2008, The Wall Street Journal stated that Anheuser-Busch InBev, which owned a non-controlling 50% stake...

4:16 PM
@M.A.R. Yay! And very well-stated. I felt the same way even if I didn't consciously put it into those same words.
@terdon I just finished The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (the 1st book in the Inheritance trilogy) and am now moving on to the third. :)

@Rubiksmoose Is that good? I've read some descriptions that kinda put me off and heard she was writing what she had to in order to get published rather than what she wanted to.

@terdon I'm enjoying it.
I'd say it is definitely worth a read.
But I'd also recommend reading them in the correct order unlike me ;-)

Heh, yeah, I saw you mentioned that. OK, thanks!

I really like the worlds she builds. And Inheritance sets up another fascinating world.

5:05 PM
@terdon I finished book 1. I loved it, child deaths and all, but I think after the trilogy's over, I'd have to try something else.
Different writing, distant or distinct.

can anyone tell what are requirements to work at SE
maybe @Catija can help

@StellaRigeo apply for a job
get it

@StellaRigeo Hey, new name? :D Did you look at /work-here yet?

:D
that's what they have open right now

@Aibobot i am in high school
let's get ready for a programming degree

Do I pronounce Rigeo with a hard or a soft G?

5:31 PM
@StellaRigeo I don't see any specific educational requirements

@M.A.R. neither hard nor too soft

o.O

@Aibobot i am not a good coder

In the Latin-based orthographies of many European languages, the letter ⟨g⟩ is used in different contexts to represent two distinct phonemes that in English are called hard and soft ⟨g⟩. The sound of a hard ⟨g⟩ (which often precedes the non-front vowels ⟨a o u⟩ or a consonant) is usually the voiced velar plosive [ɡ] (as in gangrene or golf) while the sound of a soft ⟨g⟩ (typically before ⟨i⟩, ⟨e⟩, or ⟨y⟩) may be a fricative or affricate, depending on the language. In English, the sound of soft ⟨g⟩ is the affricate /dʒ/, as in general, giant, and gym. A (g) at the end of a word usually renders a...

Jeff Atwood on May 21, 2009
I am pleased to announce that Stack Overflow just added another team member in an officially paid capacity: Geoff Dalgas. Geoff and I met on a customer site in 1996. Here was this crazy kid, in charge of all the computer stuff at a government facility, who knew more about the computers and custom software…

@user1271772 Uh, they used not to be, then they became the same, something might have affected their evolutionary tree again by now
Chat is probably mysterious and sentient

5:43 PM
> “Our goal is for Stack Overflow to be a modest but self-sustaining business.”
as opposed to 10x growth...
but the various parts of the company kinda are symbiotic.... and from what I heard that's not something that's understood

Next feature: closed questions are reopened on mouseclick

if you look at glassdoor, there's folks in sales complaining about engineering first, engineering folks unhappy at being sidelined... that one dude claiming all of management's on drugs...
but sales orgs need to be making enough money to sustain themselves + find other stuff. We don't have a product without engineering. The best potential drivers for SE's non public products are folks passionate about the public products...
not necessarily just on SO...

@M.A.R. You forgot to mention Matter Modeling! We are equally un-interested in new proofs of Fermat's Last Theorem.

I'm uninterested in Fermat, overall. Really nice guy probably, but a bit dead.

6:00 PM
@M.A.R. heh, That's one thing I feel SO misses
that they're focused on widening the "outer" periphery of the community

Fermat?
Everyone misses him

but growing its core is just as important
@M.A.R. they need better aim

Wait.
Recent?

@M.A.R. Shog, Robert and Jon were not THAT long ago

also most recent.

@M.A.R. maybe a point
@StellaRigeo only SO

@user1271772 that's correct
@StellaRigeo you can, but it would be closed as duplicate

Q: Dark Mode for Stack Exchange sites

mrt181Each Stack Exchange site should provide users the option of using a dark mode design/theme. Why is this feature missing? The major IDEs are already a letdown regarding dark color schemes.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask WILL YOU LET ME SLEEP
Turn off the lights on the way out
No wait, turn off the lights! Dammit
Gets up from bed and turns off the lights, insulting ancestry in the meanwhile

@M.A.R. You don't have voice activated lights? Or failing that remote control activated lights? Are you living in the dark ages?

@DavidPostill Eats shoe Sadly
I never bothered with the remotes. They're locked in a drawer

@DavidPostill technically, if he was living in the dark ages....
he wouldn't need to worry about the lights

lol
@Aibobot Other than blowing out the candles, for which he would still have to get out of bed (unless he has a really long snuffer) :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask But Sonic said that there's people on this list: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/pingable/89 whose names don't autocomplete when you try to ping them with @...

8:36 PM
@Aibobot thanks!
@M.A.R. no
@M.A.R. no you
@M.A.R. no lights
@M.A.R. you sleep too early
@DavidPostill no candles in the dark ages, otherwise they wouldn't be dark.... ;)
@user1271772 who for example? If it's correct then as far as I can tell, it's a bug. /cc @Sonic
@Aibobot something tells me that @M.A.R. is more creative than that. For example he'll take the foe's kidney as a trophy, not something as lame as the skull.
:D

@ShadowWizardWearingMask tradition man tradition
and kidneys make terrible lamps... which might explain why he is in the dark age

@M.A.R is anti tradition, I can see it in his face.

You probably can't
cause its too dark

meh, who needs light to see?!

@Shadow Here is the comment where @Sonic said that JNat was not auto-completed, but they showed up on the "pingable" list. However Jnat is no longer on the pingable list, so maybe what happened was that the auto-correct stopped working, and then the pingable list did not get updated until UTC 00:00 or something like that. Strange.

8:46 PM
Do any of y'all even know what the Dark Ages were? Hint: It was nothing to do with it being literally dark...

@user1271772 No, I didn't say that. I just said I double-checked that list (in case of caching).
@user1271772 No, I didn't say there that JNat wasn't autocompleted. I implied that they were, but to double-check (that that wasn't merely the result of caching), I also checked the pingable page.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask See first message of mine above.

@user1271772 JNat has not been around for over a week so he's not pingable, and not in the list either.
@SonictheMaskedWerehog I don't understand what is the problem then?
JNat being away is strange, true.... hopefully, he's having fun somewhere. :)

There is no issue?

@SonictheMaskedWerehog oh, looked like there was.

I did send an email to JNat asking if they still welcome such pings, and am waiting for a response

@SonictheMaskedWerehog well now we can't ping anyway. Well, we can, but even I won't use the reply technique just to report a spammer.
The network will survive... ;)

In my case, I just wanted to get that one ping done, and then planned to email to ask if they still wanted such pings
...which I did a couple hours ago
