Morning!

Rob
5:46 AM
🌃

Is that a city?

I see we've broken oneboxing again.

6:07 AM
To be fair, I don't really mind XD
Takes up way less space this way.

Oneboxing the blog broke both here and on chat.SE, so probably on chat.SO too.

6:59 AM
Hola pals

ola

@rene raketje?

yes, please

@rene why do you have a blurry flower as avatar?

@rene What's the weather like over there? It's actually pretty nice here right now, we had a bunch of thunder and rain last night and it really cooled down :D

7:11 AM
@Arjun Because they are a flower?

@SonictheMaskedWerehog lmao,fair enough

Rob
7:48 AM
@Tinkeringbell It is "evening", a reply to "morning"; the difference due to the timezone.

Ahh.
I can't wait for evening :D
Should be able to get some sleep

Rob
@Catija I mentioned that when this happened: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8515438#8515438, in the following comment.

@Tinkeringbell not during night?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'm planning on sleeping evening, night, and a big part of morning as well.

@Tinkeringbell still hot, no rain last night so didn't cool down a lot.

7:55 AM
@rene :(
youtu.be/1dc4MqnQ1qI < This was here, last night. It's 22 degrees now.

@Tinkeringbell Whoa. Sounds like three times than my own sleep. ;)

Rob
@Tinkeringbell Still too hot? --- I'm fortunate to have shading on my south side, only picking up direct sun blast for a couple of hours; I know a lot of people who simply bake all day.

@Rob It did cool down a lot last night, but I spent until 00:30 being awake because everytime I nearly slept some loud thunder or sirens would happen.

Rob
We have explosions at the police station, which seems preferable.

7:58 AM
@Rob huh? Who is behind this?

@Tinkeringbell that is .... a lot of water ....

@rene Almost 50mm over the course of around 3 hours, I believe.

wow

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'd have to actually get up and go look, but it's traditional (happening for decades) that younger people set off homemade bombs; so sometimes there's a big boom, and occasionally several minutes worth. Then they run like heck because the police come out.

any mod here?
it's urgent

Rob
8:11 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Sometimes it's bear bangers, other times it's way too loud to be that; or gunfire.

8:27 AM
@Rob Sounds fun too :/

Rob
Yes it's fairly good, it's a few blocks away so you get the enjoyment of the perceived nuisance factor to the occupants of the police station (subject of BLM protests and 1000's of other complaints) combined with the dampening of the blast due to the distance. Good times, good times.

@Arjun because I'm not sharp ...

9:14 AM
@rene Japan reached 40 this week, I hope it's not as bad as there...
@Tinkeringbell wow O_O
coincidentally(?), we also got very heavy rain yesterday out of nowhere
other than yesterday, this week and today have been quiet sunny...

Meanwhile, the air is just perfect here.
@Arjun often you just ask, don't ask to ask. However, you may have a different opinion on what constitutes "urgent" or what requires mod intervention

@MetaAndrewT. Yeah, it kept me up all evening :(

You're down on evenings?
The weather is pleasant here but I sweated a lot during exercise
Is it just me or do the fonts just not match

@M.A.R. They deliberately did it to bother you

Unsurprisingly, Jakarta flooded again yesterday... (in Bahasa Indonesia)

9:24 AM
@MetaAndrewT. where did Jakarta flood?
@JourneymanGeek oh I have no doubt
It's all about me. It's always been.
Make me a sandwich, figment of imagination.

Interrupts the monologue Hey!

Interrupts the interruption Hey!

Monologues an interruption Hay!

9:46 AM
@Rob why... Would they do that??

@user1271772 kind of late convo, but you might be interested in one of the latest site getting the design: Anime.SE. Gathering idea in March 2019, First (failed) iteration in April 2019, getting redesign with commision in June 2019, final design in July 2019

@Arjun instead of asking this you could say whatever urgent thing you have to say, and in the end of the message ping a mod. E.g. "there is a terrible troll roaming free!! [ping here]"
That would save time and more likely to achieve a result, instead of the "knock knock" approach. :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask There's always trolls roaming free, so a flag on a troll post is better: Doesn't call out, troll can't see the attention ;)

Rob
@M.A.R. The top letters are their logo, part of their branding, and the writing on the second line is their promotion.

@Tinkeringbell well when it's urgent I'll ping here too, troll was just first example.

9:50 AM
That goes for... basically anything: Put up a flag for moderator intervention and we'll get to it. :D

So you say never ping you here? @Tink
(on stuff related to moderation)

Eh, you can... but it's a well known thing that mods look at the flag queue and not each others chat pings, so if it's urgent, a flag is better because other mods than me can see it too and handle it before I may have time.
And pinging just everyone is not a good way either: People might not see if anyone else took it up or think they can do a few other things and one of the other pingees can pick up.

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Read my next two comments, they're dishonest; there has been daily protests from months to get rid of them, to defund them, ever since they murdered that fellow by kneeling on his neck for several minutes while he begged for his life - all in front of numerous witnesses, who recorded the activity on their cellphones. Then, off to the next call, like nothing happened.
People don't like that.

10:14 AM
@MetaAndrewT. wow. It was just unusual here but I guess we're getting to a new normal.

Rob
10:25 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Better question is "Why do people do this?:" - People frequently ram the police station with vehicles: youtu.be/pulhODkLnmU?t=21 or facebook.com/7NEWSsydney/videos/… and caution foul language film rap videos with guns in the lobby of the police station. -- Sometimes the risk vs. the gain is poorly thought out.

People, a quick question if you know. What should be done with old link only answers with which the link is dead? stackoverflow.com/a/1984881/117421

@Rob Thanks, I have an idea of what those are. What I'm saying is with side a wide logo, sans serif would have probably looked better.

@Wes Based on meta.stackexchange.com/q/225370/369802, I'd say you could flag that as not an answer/very low quality, put up a comment that the link is dead as well, and let the queues do their work. But I'm not that active on SO so your mileage may vary.

I think that's the way to go, from what I recall from SOBotics

Wes
Okay done.
thank you
Pity as I was curious about the link

I'm trying Internet Wayback Archive first...
but it loaded the archive version of it ._.

1:07 PM
@Wes Well, next time someone complains on meta that their super valid really awesome link-only answer was deleted, remember how you feel now.

Wes
1:26 PM
I don't think i've every complained about link only answers being deleted though I did kind of put one myself.
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2894744/how-to-compile-a-svn-python-binding-for-windows-from-the-source/4182705#4182705
@MetaAndrewT. Thanks
I think I better delete that answer actually.
"You cannot delete this accepted answer"

Huh, you received half of your own bounty... that's interesting...

@MetaAndrewT. I didn't think that was possible...
But it certainly looks that way...
@Wes The most useful thing you could probably do would be to summarize what the link says in your answer.

@Wes if the content's gone, you still have a chance to salvage it with web.archive.org/web/20150406063652/http://www.lejordet.com/2009/… :) Otherwise, try mod flag and request for deletion for answer with acceptance

Rob
@M.A.R. I didn't design it, nor look up the rationale, but the logo might be sans serif to make it "sharper", and the slogan might be serif to make it traditional, old, long standing, and possibly to improve the resolution of the smaller font at a distance.

1:45 PM
@Wes No not you, but it's some of the more pointless rants that occasionally appear on meta.SO

2:09 PM
🚽

Rob
2:44 PM
@M.A.R. Here's a couple of examples, when you have a large billboard viewed at a distance the smaller font is harder to see. It's elements like the "ear", "bowl", "terminal" and "serifs" that make it easier to distinguish one character from another.
See this billboard, placed at an angle, or this one in the background - even on an angle or curved surface the type is still legible.

3:11 PM
@Rob Valid point

3:30 PM
@Rob Oh. I just assumed that page didn't ever expand. Not quite the same thing.

Hmmm.

@Catija Where is it that people can only upvote?

On Teams Articles.

@LinkBerest Gold mine of what?
Thanks Catija. I was trying to figure out it because we were talking about Teams, but also Confluence and Reddit and all that other stuff at around the same time.
@Aibobot But "Catija, YaakovEllis, g3rv4, NickCraver" is not "everyone" either! So no one pinged "everyone" :D

I was once "and myself" on MSE, targeting the 5th close vote...

... You're generally better off picking one person to ask. Pinging all the available staff, including the people who pretty much never interact in here, is more likely to make them leave and stop participating here than to get an answer. So... be thoughtful about who you choose to ping. Maybe ask the room first - no pings at all - see if anyone knows ... if not, choose one person and ping them.

4:22 PM
@user1271772 I don't want things to be unclear: It is not appreciated if SE staff gets pinged here, so much not appreciated that the RO/Mod team basically disallows it. With all the emojis I get the impression you might be thinking we're joking. We only try to bring the serious message in a lighthearted way.

4:34 PM
@MetaAndrewT. Interesting. Out of all the designs I see there, the final one that ended up being implemented, is the one I like the least! Anyway, I guess your point is that it takes a long time to come up with a design, but I disagree: Based on the links you've provided, it seems that the users could have done all the work at the staff designers didn't need to. But more importantly, most sites just want a logo for the HNQ sidebar, and a banner at the top of their page. Everything else is a bonus.
@rene What do you mean by "all the emojis", there is only one emoji in my message.

@MetaAndrewT. This reminds me of those fake 'TIME person of the year' posters ;)

@Catija I notice that Sonic now only pings JNat for notification of cross-site spammers: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8508877#8508877 But he used to ping everyone for it. It's a bit funny because JNat has not been pingable here for a long time.
Meaning: That August 6th ping to JNat would not have worked as far as I can tell.

4:50 PM
@user1271772 I followed the trail back and found another one. So that is all the emojis. Not saying they were all by you.

Chinese script is fascinating. Fortunately there's not (yet) traditional Japanese vs simplified Japanese... or is it!?

@rene In my last message, I used :D at the end, only because that's the one that JourneymanGeek's sock was using. I was just being more like them, which I thought would be considered more friendly.
@MetaAndrewT. Well there is, but at not as large of a scale. Certain Kanji characters are rarely used in modern literature, but the well educated (even the well-educated expats) will still know those characters.
Consider for example this famous ramen restaurant in Kyoto:
Sorry it's taking ages to get the image

@user1271772 fair enough

here we go.
So when I lived in Kyoto, my friend who was an undergrad student in a non-Asian country, who was on a 1-year exchange at Kyoto University, immediately read this as "Taka Yasu"
But taka is usually 高
In "simplified" Japanese. So I guess there's some notion of "traditional" Japanese, but not to the extent it exists with Chinese.

Ugh, it's stylish, but I won't read it as Taka, and even confused trying to identify what character that is...

5:05 PM
Google translates that as "fit meat"

@MetaAndrewT. Really? It's also the same character in old Chinese
@JohnDvorak What language were you trying to translate from? Taka usually means "high"

I failed my Chinese lessons and skipped directly to Japanese :/

Hahaha

I was translating from Chinese; let me try Japanese

can also mean "expensive-cheap"

5:09 PM
I think most Chinese classes (even for English speakers) do teach a little bit of the "old Chinese" characters. I've sat in a class where they spent one of the first days going through the origins of the characters and what old characters looked like. Also the books on how to learn Chinese text, usually show the old symbols too. This character (the one for "taka" here) is one of the more common ones that's taught I think.

I can't get it to detect any text in Japanese

Yea unfortunately Google translate is hard for Japanese

Yeah unfortunately Google translate is hard

Yeah unfortunately Google

Nice one M.A.R!

5:10 PM
Also "yea" is not pronounced the way you think it's pronounced

Oops. I see I was supposed to say "Yeah unfortunately"

It's supposed to be ancient
Yeah

Yee-haw unfortunately Google!
@JohnDvorak the equivalent kanji is 高安
I gave up learning Chinese just because of the tone... I might continue later only if for the grammar and vocab

Is your "first" language Bahasa Indonesia?

Yes, that's my native language

5:13 PM
Nice
It's a language that would have been useful for me to know when my ex-girlfriend's sister was put in a jail on the island of Batam.

And yea, now that I think of it, the meaning of the restaurant is probably: "High quality food, for cheap price"

"Yasu" meaning cheap (as Andrew said), and "Taka" meaning "Expensive" or "High" or in this case, probably just "High quality".

This restaurant always had a huge line-up to get in, and they were known for "high quality" karage chicken and ramen, but it still had the "mom and pop" feel, hence much cheaper prices than you'd pay at a high-class restaurant.
@MetaAndrewT. She was a native of Batam anyway, and got out of the jail 1 year later.

I hope it wasn't anything serious...
That said, it's already late here, and I'm quite sleepy due the medicine this time, so... Ta!

@MetaAndrewT. Good night!

So cross site serial voting is a thing: meta.stackexchange.com/q/353050/158100 ?

"it's not fair" always makes me laugh

yeah, the motivation why such a feature needs to be implemented most often goes belly up.
I would say the serial downvoter needs a reward. It is so much work to down vote these post. Maybe a badge? Down and Out: serial downvote a user in 5 communities?

10:08 PM
That's when you know you've really won
