@Tinkeringbell Heh, yeah, my proposed edit earlier was a reaction to seeing that tag-blacklist-request had been renamed to tag-block-request. I wasn't gonna be doing any crazy retagging, though Sonic has been doing some FAQ edits per their new policy, which I think is fine. I'm definitely holding off on any major changes until we get some sort of plan for that stuff.

@user1271772 yes. A beeg typo

Rob
I think we should consider cross-cultural difference:
Color symbolism in art and anthropology refers to the use of color as a symbol in various cultures. There is great diversity in the use of colors and their associations between cultures and even within the same culture in different time periods. The same color may have very different associations within the same culture at any time. Diversity in color symbolism occurs because color meanings and symbolism occur on an individual, cultural and universal basis. Color symbolism is also context-dependent and influenced by changes over time. Symbolic representations of religious concepts or articles may...
Sometimes black isn't good or bad, just different:
The red/black concept, sometimes called the red–black architecture or red/black engineering, refers to the careful segregation in cryptographic systems of signals that contain sensitive or classified plaintext information (red signals) from those that carry encrypted information, or ciphertext (black signals). Therefore the red side is usually considered the internal side, and the black side the more public side, with often some sort of guard, firewall or data-diode between the two. In NSA jargon, encryption devices are often called blackers, because they convert red signals to black. TEMPE...
More frequently there is a predisposition to the color:
Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence or complete absorption of visible light. It is an achromatic color, a color without hue, like white and gray. It is often used symbolically or figuratively to represent darkness, while white represents light. Black and white have often been used to describe opposites such as good and evil, the Dark Ages versus Age of Enlightenment, and night versus day. Since the Middle Ages, black has been the symbolic color of solemnity and authority, and for this reason is still commonly worn by judges and magistrates.Black was one of the first colors used...
Changing the tag from black to block makes block an euphemism for black. A different word should be substituted.

@SonictheMaskedWerehog That pattern looks like it's already caught by Potentially bad keyword in answer and Potentially bad keyword in body; append -force if you really want to do that.

@DavidPostill Such questions are usually unsalvageable though, so it's more often than not a wasted effort.
I vaguely recall a meta post stating spam shouldn't be edited.
Case in point: question is removed.

@Mast some people don't realise editing out the spam is actually unwanted

8:16 AM
Hi!!! Is there any criteria on which closure stats are sorted in 10k tools?
I got this table on Tuesday and this table today.

@Kulfy It looks like you've toggled how many days are shown?

That does look oddly sorted.

nr. one looks sorted by how the dialog is sorted...

@Tinkeringbell Yeah. But I'm not talking about the numbers. I'm referring to close reasons.

@Kulfy Just checking. I can see the sort order on MSE change if I pick different time limits too.
I haven't yet figured out why though XD

8:24 AM
Even if I apply same filter which I applied on Tuesday, the stats are still oddly sorted. "Duplicate" reason isn't at top.
I think it's worth asking on Meta Stack Exchange

I can't find an immediate duplicate (yet) so go ahead :D

I didn't even know you could get them as a table. I'm at the default 30d close stats, how do I get to that shiny table?

Scroll down

I'm at the bottom of my screen.

/tools/question-close-stats then scroll down ;)

8:27 AM
@Tinkeringbell Thank you.

(You can select the date range on the top of the page)
If you're on /tools, it's one of the links at the bottom of the page: 'question close stats'

Ah, it's the next-to-last link from the close stats page.

I wonder if it would be worth it to ask if they can please, please just call it 'statistics'? :P

That would need a bit of a rework I think, since there's also suggested-edit stats.
But putting all the stats pages on a stats overview might be useful, yes.
I see I have a coffee problem.
I need more coffee but it's too hot for coffee.

I have posted a question. Thank you all the wonderful people out there :)

Q: Should spam posts be edited?

Mad ScientistI noticed that the posts of the recent spam surge on Ask Ubuntu were all edited by community members into something like EDITED - REMOVED SPAM ANSWER or similar. While I understand why the users have done this and I too don't want to leave the spam content visible for longer than absolutel...

Yea, that could've been it.

user707129
@JourneymanGeek It is, SE is very weird for me at the moment. I can’t log in on my PC

12:01 PM
Its down :D
and damnit, I lost my contact in the SRE team :D
I could ping him otherwise

user707129
What’s SRE?

user707129
This is a mess

@Daniil you don't have 2 hours but...
in short "sysadmins"
(joking about 2 hours)

user707129
@JourneymanGeek ?

user707129
Oh ok

12:02 PM
the folks who keep the back end of the site running, hardware, OS and so on
modern system administration is more than just hardware and servers, so its referred to as "System Reliability Engineering"
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a discipline that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to infrastructure and operations problems. The main goals are to create scalable and highly reliable software systems. According to Ben Treynor, founder of Google's Site Reliability Team, SRE is "what happens when a software engineer is tasked with what used to be called operations." == Roles == A Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) will spend up to 50% of their time doing "ops" related work such as issues, on-call, and manual intervention. Since the software system that an SRE oversees...
or site reliability engineering

It's quite wonky at the moment, yes.
They've probably fail-overed by now and investigating.

@JourneymanGeek What's down? Seems all OK from here ...

MSE
maybe just the search page

@JourneymanGeek Working fine for me

user707129
Everythings wonky

12:07 PM
can you search from the top?
hm
I wonder if @Daniil and I are on a wonky server and @DavidPostill is not :D

Was wonky here too, other SE sites too but quite random which requests were and weren't visibly affected.

OK. Yes. Searches are not working on MSE and SU. SU returned "The service is unavailable."

ah elasticsearch
the only thing I apparently hate almost as much as jira, and I've never actually worked on it :D

SE front page seems alive though.

the elastic band has snapped :)

12:10 PM
@DavidPostill are you using a supported browser?
(me and my hipster browser :D )

@JourneymanGeek Yes. Latest stable FF on Windows.

ah
(cause in theory my browser isn't supported, even if much like every other browser... its basically chrome)

MSE has now returned "We are currently offline for maintenance" after waiting a long time for search to do something.

12:12 PM
Someone should post on meta :D

Go ahead.

uh
Oddly, despite my jokes about biting people
I'm busy doing something on a deadline :D

On a saturday? Must be some deadline.

:D
Not work

Looks fixed-ish.

12:20 PM
still broken for me

Odd, now I don't get a response at all.

,.....
Posting might be broken too
posting is broken

user707129
@JourneymanGeek Sure

@Daniil :D
I can't

user707129
I guess not, bleh

12:29 PM
This reminds of the time our ticketing system was down....

user707129
Huh, it worked

user707129
I closed the tab but it managed to post

user707129
And I posted twice

@Daniil i can relate to the log and log out part

12:43 PM
Err, it looks like Stack Exchange is, not to put too fine a point on it, sh***ing itself.

you mean s5g itself?

@JohnDvorak yees...
I can't search.
For anything.
It takes ages to load, and when it finally does, it shows me a stupid maintenance sign.

Does it affect SO, or only the rest of network?

I clicked the search button 6 minutes ago, and it's still loading.
@JohnDvorak I think it's network wide.
sdc coffee Daniil

@Ollie brews a cup of Latte for @Daniil

12:48 PM
@SmokeDetector are you detecting anything?
Is there a possibility that someone could do this on purpose?

user707129
@Ollie As far as I’m aware, Smokey is not affected

I'm not pointing any fingers.

@Ollie smokey doesn't run on SE infrastructure at all

Smokey doesn't keep an eye on SE infrastructure either.
Conveying a message from Nick: "We are seeing some abnormal search traffic we're investigating and working to resolve any disruptions still present." — Catija ♦ 6 mins ago
Could be a DoS of sorts.

1:04 PM
@Mast so someone might intentionally be...
...fiddling?

Could be anything really.

1:19 PM
Any updates?

:8509480 I thought the image wasn't working, but that was Firefox tracking protection

@JourneymanGeek huh, every sysadmin I know hates being called an SRE. Granted one insists we call him "The Master"

@LinkBerest SE seems to like it, and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Limoncelli works there and is one of the folks who probably helped build that culture

Eh, I also worked mostly gov stuff and we are an admitted small and weird crew :)

@Rob you're right. I got the same thing on AskUbuntu a moment ago.

1:31 PM
@Ollie I think its pretty clear something is... borked

@JourneymanGeek perhaps more industrial language, but yes.
All over SE though?

How could so many things go wrong all at once?

here's the joke

It's usually one thing going wrong blowing up the rest.

1:32 PM
Ohhh no.

there's a post on what SE runs for what, and it would help me explain it
but... search :D

Haha

@JourneymanGeek Ah, okay. My buddy says we have an SRT group (Special Response Team) which is basically our on call people so our clients get those two names confused so they prefer sysadmin

Deng it.
@LinkBerest no, Street Racing Tech :D

Only after hours ;)

1:33 PM
this is SE's heart of the house
the bits of it people rarely think about

@LinkBerest and when the roads are empty :P

is what nick's talking about here

@Ollie ..... considering the physical location of our servers, that's not an issue

may not be up to date
seems correct (2 processors, with 8 cores, and 2 threads for 32 logical processors)

sdc stiffdrink

1:36 PM
@Ollie No such command 'stiffdrink'.

@Ollie cause of the northumberland incident

Gack.

If you get tea you could always make a hot toddy yourself

I'll be going now.

We can't tell you cause of the OSA, MSD and MI99

1:38 PM
Hopefully when I get back my profile pic will finally update.
changed it 20 mins ago.
Ta!

@Ollie >_>
WE HAF VAYS!

StackStatus coming up in 3.. 2.. 1..

Rob
> Oh no! Search is currently offline.
> This is usually because we let the gerbils out for 10 seconds longer than we should have, or are actively improving our search results and needed to take things offline while we re-index this site. Hang tight and we'll return search to you as soon as possible.

pay to cluster gods

Rob
1:47 PM
Darn 🐹

user707129
I hope we get a much better search when search goes up to compensate :)

TIL gerbils are banned in California
For no particular reason at all, where is the SEI HQ located?

New York

Nah... we'll get unelasticsearch for a moment...

1:53 PM
(and now my stomach is upsetting after I had a drink of milk coffee...)

user707129
2:13 PM
Search is back

I just realized the feed to StackStatus has gone on this chat room...
I just realized Twitter no longer provides their own RSS feed...

2:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek I think that your and Daniil's questions are essentially duplicate. Can you pick one?

@Catija Danill's is broader so I'm good with that being the main one and closing mine as a dupe

Thanks!
I'm putting my phone up and going on a family walk.

:D
Something something weekends :D
and systems being inconsiderate and giving issues on a saturday

2 hours later…
4:40 PM
@Catija hanging your phone?! ;)

5:02 PM
sort of a follow-up for folks who dicussed my story of plagiarism mixed with voting ring. Today I saw plagiarised post deleted and user who wrote it merged into a different account. Looks like it was a sock puppet. Interesting that master account "inherited" voting fraud symptoms from the sock - I plan to reflag that, just to make sure that this stays in the line until CM have time to check

2 hours later…
7:02 PM
Yay! My picture updated :P
Does the Question Page automatically save your question draft?
I assume it does, but I'll sometimes come back to the page, and the title and tags will be gone.
Is there a button or something you can press to save the draft?

@Ollie Yes, but it's not totally safe
@Ollie No

@M.A.R. do you think it would be useful/better if there were?

I think it's been proposed, at least twice

@M.A.R. do you have any links?

I'm rather lazily looking for them

7:25 PM
I'm off to make brownies. Ta!

FWIW, the draft is saved every minute, and for 1 week (ref: meta.stackexchange.com/a/66238/241919).
Ta!

Rob
8:18 PM
But only if you share your brownies!

8:30 PM
People closing completed bug reports is a fairly large problem, I have an autocomment for that:
> To close voters: the issue was fixed, not no longer reproducible. That close reason is intended for ephemeral issues that resolve themselves after a short while, not for actual bugs that are later marked completed. The tag is enough.
Emphasis on "themselves"

9:29 PM
@JourneymanGeek how'd you feel about status-reviewing this?

9:41 PM
@ArtOfCode Would adapting the user script linked here not work?

no
this is metasmoke we're talking about

2 hours later…
11:41 PM
@SonictheMaskedWerehog I feel like we would have better luck doing so when there's dev time on it
Or something associated
Uhhh
@ArtOfCode ^
No point status reviewing if it sits on a to do pile

@JourneymanGeek eh, might at least get it on a todo pile rather than an ignore pile
