@Rob Per your rejection: Probably shoulda linked to the meta post and this link, but I was on mobile :(
Horseb4cart indeed, though.

Rob
1:46 AM
@Spe, I did read your StarBoard; basically it says the same as the rejection reason, not mandated and each community must discuss. --- Also consider the problem that your singlehanded decision invites (along with making the decision for everyone): When typing "blocklist" it's likely to be autocorrected to "blacklist" (and the same for similar permutations); that also isn't friendly for visually impaired (the difference between "a" and "o" - not everyone has fonts where those letters are clearly
If the words used were: instead of "black" used "blocked" that can't be autocorrected to "blacked" (because that's a misspelling); the proper autocorrection would be "blackened", and similarly there is no such word as "blockened" - thus avoiding autocorrection errors. --- But the community needs to discuss burniation, synonymization, etc.
Other reviewers are free to disagree, and put it through; then we will see if we come back to this again ...
🤝

@Rob The reason I had suggested an edit in the first place was merely because I had noticed that had been renamed over to tag-block-request, and that the wiki of the tag I suggested a change to had just been updated by Sonic to reflect the "black" to "block" change, but hadn't caught the excerpt, so I figured I'd fix that real quick.
You're right though, a more formal discussion could probably take place... And other reviewers can have a gander as well. We'll see what happens ;D

If we are to edit all incidences of "blacklist" - monumental effort for dubious benefit - then at least change it to "denylist" rather than "blocklist", which is less standard and easier to be thought a typo.

Rob
2:07 AM
@Spevacus ^^ Yes, as @JohnDvorak wrote. --- The 'Change Committee' can also visit Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklist_(disambiguation) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Blacklisting en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklist_(computing) - where no change is evident. --- What about greylist, who/how does it discriminate; non-elderly?

Greylist is being renamed for consistency only.

Rob
Let's change BlackHole to DenyHole - because that won't become the butt of jokes.

Hahaha.

It's more likely we'll get Uranus renamed.

Rob
Theirnus
That's the politer form.

2:12 AM
Actually, the new name is Urectum
Name change slated for 2620

Rob
Wrecked 'em, damn near killed 'em.

(also, look at the images)

@RyanM Just wanted the link to what they were blacklisted for

@SonictheMaskedWerehog Ah, makes sense

Andddd gone.

Almost looks hijacked, went from polite apologies for misunderstanding to, uh, that...

10 year network wide suspension as well.
Oh well.

3:14 AM
@Spevacus Either the account was compromised, or the user was found to be a sock puppet of a network-banned user

Rob
@Spevacus, they have a DenyAvatar too.

@SonictheMaskedWerehog If the former... Unfortunate. If the latter... Deserved.

Can non-employee moderators impose network-wide suspensions in those cases?

no

Probably pretty rare that a mod would need to do that even if they could. Dunno how the whole escalation stuff works, but it does seem to work.

@Spevacus @Rob @SonictheMaskedWerehog @John just caught up with the stuff about editing tags to be referring to blocklist instead of blacklist: I might actually think you could wait with that until SE does it: Yaakov's answer specifically states they will.
> We are planning to update the relevant tags on metas network-wide (and will update here when this has been done) and will continue to update our usage of this terminology internally as it becomes feasible to do so.

6:00 AM
@Tinkeringbell I made the changes to the FAQ proposal based on this quote:
> In that vein, we would like to announce that we have made the following changes on all user-facing portions of the sites [...] [all] instances of “blacklist” have been converted to “blocklist”
I didn't do any retagging because of the quote you quoted.
To summarize, user-facing elements have already been changed, the only things remaining are tags and internal things, and I didn't change any tags and I of course can't touch anything internal.

Ah, nvm. It seems I didn't wake up properly before replying.

Actually, now that I look at it, the tags have now been renamed: see

I though all of you had been editing tag synonyms, not tag excerpts.

6:25 AM
@Tinkeringbell I think he meant that SE will do the things only staff can do like tag rename without a bump, but as for editing posts, doubt they have the required amount of employees and time to edit hundreds or thousands of posts on all meta sites. That's where we should help, as far as I can tell.

do CMs curently investigate voting rings and if yes, how long it may take? Over a week ago I flagged a potential case and evidence I provided appears sufficient because moderator marked it helpful (I guess this means they agreed with my observations and passed to CM to dig further). I ask because it also referred a case of a (provable) plagiarism and I am trying to decide whether it would be better to flag it separately now or wait until my more general flag is acted upon (possibly, never?)

I think it definitely takes longer than a week.

Don't think plagiarism requires a CM, unless it's big scale and network wide?

@gnat The backlog for CM escalations of voting rings is currently measured in months, at least in some cases. I'm not sure if they're taking them in order or not.
2

6:43 AM
Is a CM required for dismantling a voting ring? I'd imagine a lot of it can be detected by and part of it can be solved by local moderators.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask one I observed looked like small scale and not network wide. I mentioned it in my flag about voting ring only as a secondary, supplementary evidence, along with other facts. Back then I was more worried about voting fraud and these other facts carried more weight to me
@Mast I heard that mods have some "secret button" that allows to find out and act on simple voting rings (but not on more complicated cases). I guess (I hope) that moderator who handled my flag tried this option before passing it to CM

@SonictheMaskedWerehog Gone.

Rob
7:20 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, you and @Sha can read that a couple more times, if you wish to do so. I rejected the edit, what came of the other reviewers actions I've yet to look at; nor is time available in the next few hours. :)

@SonictheMaskedWerehog Was wondering when that happened, thank you.
I was under the impression SE would be doing that later.

Rob
Also, Cat showed up directly after our discussion and made no comments on the outcome; answering someone else's question. So, no feet were held to the fire.

Does this mean blacklist is likely to disappear or be renamed in the near future as well?

7:37 AM
@Mast Often yes
@gnat we can sometimes see extreme trends in voting - so who voted for who, but not who voted for what
but we can't invalidate votes
@Mast meta request referencing Yaakov's post please!
I'll try to figure out how to make it happen once I've gotten some sleep and lotsa fluids
there's a guide for mods somewhere, I did it once or twice and it went horrifically wrong, so I'd want to make sure it goes horribly right this time instead :D

I don't think we'll have to do anything ;)
So go sleep and drink.

lol
I have a work video call in 45 min :D

My next one is in 15 minutes ;)

but having a formal meta posts means there's something for us to poke people over/point of reference

I'm feeling very professional today.
(I have pink curtains and they're closed now to block out the sun, which makes for ... fun... lighting on the webcam. Today, I'm a camgirl XD)

7:46 AM
since its no secret, I'm trying to find the spoons to write a cover letter :D
part of me is "USE THE BERNIE MEME!"

Hehehe

"I am once again asking you to consider my application...."
No real rush - we don't have anything more than the CEO promising openings, but yanno :D
+++ I have the resume polished up from the failed conversion
well updated

That's something. I hate having to rewrite mine every 6 months, but you're right: It does make sure it's always polished up ;)

@Tinkeringbell I guess part of the problem for me is the cover letter tells the story I want to say :D

@Tinkeringbell I'm in the office in my shorts today. Too hot for professionalism.
And yes, all but one of my colleagues are in shorts too.

7:57 AM
I just maintain something like this
one "updated" resume per application
I don't actually know why I keep the older ones XD
each one is an iteration on an older one

Uh, doesn't that image reveal your real name?

@Mast no airco at the office?

@Tinkeringbell Yes, but the airco isn't on 20 if it's 35 outside.
Got to leave the office every so often as well.

@Mast :) I'm not at an office, so you're still better off than me ;)

@Tinkeringbell Oh yes, with the weather like this I'm glad I can still go to the office.
Old house, no airco.
@JourneymanGeek For the record

8:13 AM
@terdon I'm halfway through the first book in Broken Earth , the writing style weirded me out a bit at first but it's grown on me by now. Pretty good stuff. Will probably finish the series shortly and then have a go at the author's other works.

@Magisch yay!

I decided to try this one sooner rather then later because you're the third person I heard mentioning it
Seems to have a following

Well, each of the three books won a Hugo, so...

8:30 AM
I'm especially interested in the world building, it's a nice novel concept and very well done

Which author?

can recommend,even though im only halfway through the first. The writing style takes a bit of getting used to but it's actually really good and well done

@JourneymanGeek This is your chance to show a poll on Meta, by asking the question and marking it CW (edit locked too, if you wish), and providing a few answers for everyone to vote on; the answer receiving the most upvotes (only) is the community's chosen substitute for the former terminology. --- @Tink, if JG is asleep it's OK for you to do it.

Q: Soft opinion on changing the reputation cap

ArjunI'm writing in context to this question: What is the reasoning behind the reputation cap? about why we require reputation caps. i got bashed in the head
freaking 10 down votes!!?
actually 12

@Arjun \o/ tough crowd

@JourneymanGeek yep
Weeps inside, god says "enjoy son!"
14 downvotes 😂

9:58 AM
@Arjun No, you got disagreed with.
Meta is different.
You propose something, the proposal got shot down. Nothing personal.

@Mast yeah sure,I took it in a light way
can a mod delete it?
the question

No.
It's answered, so it shouldn't be deleted.
2
I mean, it can be deleted, but don't.

I was worried it may attract multiple downvotes in future

If people disagree with you in the future, yes.
A downvote costs you 2 points. An upvote nets you 10 points. It's at +3/-15. So you're exactly at 0.

currently

10:04 AM
The downvotes still indicate disagreement and if someone else posts it, it will be a duplicate.
Are you worried about a handful of points while the chance is just as high you may even come out ahead eventually?

@Mast i was just testing out meta, i am more inclined to MSE

Rob
Next time propose something that will only receive upvotes.

@Rob any suggestions?

It helps to post good ideas instead of bad ideas.

@Arjun Well, I have such old questions with a negative score and existing answers. Every now and then these receive additional downvotes, sometimes I tend to believe that's because some people don't like me (I am a harsh down- and closevoter), but I think more often someone searched for a similar topic, finds the question bad, and the answer is good.

10:08 AM
"They have proved that they are a responsible member" That's just wrong.

@πάνταῥεῖ i understand, i lost about 350 rep this year in deleted posts

You lost rep in deleted posts?

@Mast i understood it's effects
@Mast yes

Because they were high-scoring posts that were deleted or because users that voted on your posts got deleted?

@Mast mostly former

10:11 AM
Why were they deleted?
The posts.

IDK, some were not contributing to MSE

@Arjun So - context...

But quiet a few were really good ones

are you aware of why we have a repcap?

Upvoted posts don't get deleted by accident.

10:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek I did post context

@Arjun also Jon Skeet
lemme give you another example

Q: Transatlantic ping faster than sending a pixel to the screen?

Konrad RudolphJohn Carmack tweeted, I can send an IP packet to Europe faster than I can send a pixel to the screen. How f’d up is that? And if this weren’t John Carmack, I’d file it under “the interwebs being silly”. But this is John Carmack. How can this be true? To avoid discussions about what exact...

John Carmack is an awesome dude
but does he earn extra super ++ trust cause he posted one answer, over someone who's been here a while?

@JourneymanGeek I think you misinterpreted my question

> I agree with this answer, but my question is if a user has been a member for many years, they know all about the Stack Exchange policies and all that, can't we just lift the reputation cap for them?

10:16 AM
I am saying those who have been here for quite a while and have good rep

@Arjun I think you misinterpreted his.

So, lets say I have a really good day, and get a super viral answer
does this somehow entitle me to all the extra rep, cause I'm a 10, or 100K user?

And now we give you superpowers.
Because of 1 post.
8 years ago.

More so in the past where you would get actual physical items for high rep.

Not logged in since.

10:17 AM
(maybe again *crosses fingers)
If memory serves, unregistered :D
Actually
that's a terrible example cause he was literally the one person who could answer that question, and he probably earned all that rep

Doesn't mean he knows how the network works.

exactly
and tbh
good players don't play for rep
I have one or two extreme high rep users who just play for the reputation, and their contributions don't spark joy.

@JourneymanGeek until they get a decent amount of it

@Arjun heh, I never play for rep :D

@JourneymanGeek great

10:20 AM
on SU, it was interesting problems and having a distraction from the sheer drudgery of life
on MSE I don't even know :D

@JourneymanGeek come and see, joking

Reputation is just imaginary internet points

Gotta go. Have a nice day!

@JourneymanGeek I moderate more than I rep, and I'm not even a moderator. They only reason I even care a bit about rep is because it makes moderating easier.

@Arjun I guess this explains it best...

10:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek happens to the best of us

I just want to keep the place clean, so others can do their thing.

@Mast well the most recent round of MSE moderation was mostly constructive spite :D
"Damn if I let the place burn down."

Rob
Some people are all about rep on one site, but not only is that not physically (virtually?) transferable it doesn't transfer IRL (or here); even people who are experts on programming or mathematics can't necessarily do well on another site where the skill is applied - but sometimes it helps. --- MSE is entirely different from all other sites, even child metas, and getting the hang of it is difficult - but success on multiple child metas may assist.

@Rob and it needs a certain knack for both MSE and network community culture
as the joke goes...
you can see on my reputation graph exactly where I figured it out

Rob
Yes, if one has no rep on CB.SE they are missing one piece of a complex puzzle.

10:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Looks a lot more fluent than mine.
My CR graph looks funny.

My graph at CR definitely flattened after I got 3k rep (enough to CV) :-P

That will probably happen to mine after 20-25.
Which at the current speed should only take about half a decade.

Deletion :-)

hah
@Mast I think I said it'd take 2-3 years the year I hit my 10K on SU :D

It has taken me till the recalculation before I went over 10k.
That made me jump 3k all at once I think.

10:50 AM
It will take some time for me to hit the 20k+ at MSE

11:38 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ Winterbash always helps :D
And swag contests.
Though those seem kinda over.

@Tinkeringbell I already wear an aluminium foil hat :D

@πάνταῥεῖ That's not a totally superfluous thing these days ;)

At least always good for a joke :)

12:29 PM
meta.stackexchange.com/q/107587/369802 < That's a good one for closing as 'can no longer be reproduced', right?

@Tinkeringbell Heh, yeah, my proposed edit earlier was a reaction to seeing that tag-blacklist-request had been renamed to tag-block-request. I wasn't gonna be doing any crazy retagging, though Sonic has been doing some FAQ edits per their new policy, which I think is fine. I'm definitely holding off on any major changes until we get some sort of plan for that stuff.

Yeah, like I said.. I should wake up properly first, next time XD I saw a link that mentioned synonyms and didn't realize what exactly I was looking at. Sorry!

xD Yeah was just pointing out that all of those tags now redirect to tag-block-request.

I blame the heat now. It never really let me wake up.

Haha
Have some chocolate - links to 5KG block.

I don't think we should start a whole meta post for one mistake I made when sleepy? Seems all of you never did anything wrong in the first place.

If the naming is the issue, just rename.
You can even run files with any extension, I think.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask even text files?

@Ollie who is that Wizard? Is he friend of @M.A.R?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask he's a D&D Cleric who stole your mask.

@Ollie yeah, just right click, choose "open with" and browse to whatever process that usually run exe files when they're double clicked.
Should work, never tried.

1:54 PM
@Ollie these days? Minimum rep requirement, no suspensions on network in the past year, and winning an election
@Ollie XY question :D

@JourneymanGeek what's the rep requirement?

@Ollie what a cleric needs a mask for? They have healing and protective spells.

@Ollie poof Did somebody say D&D?

Yep @Rubiksmoose.

lol

@Ollie what type of D&D then? ;)

So I only need two more badges I guess...

@Ollie the badges are helpful
the real question is - why the hell would you want to be a mod? :D

1:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek to take the burden off the shoulders of someone who wants to strut, not stagger.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask ... really? :D

@JourneymanGeek maybe.
