2:00 PM
>_>

!!/beer

@Ollie No such command 'beer'.

@Shubh-Khandelwal You say "20 tabs" as though that were a lot!

@Shubh-Khandelwal people here do 500+ :D

@terdon and how many is a lot?

2:00 PM
Hundreds

MEELIONS!

@terdon @ShadowWizardWearingMask ohhh dear.

@JourneymanGeek melons?! :D

I currently have one chromium open with 36 tabs across 3 windows, and one firefox with I don't know how many tabs and windows...

2:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek the most I've ever had is 66

@Ollie not joking about hundreds

Oh, in multiple browsers? Then closer to 200.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I wouldn't mind a melon :D

I only have less cause most of my stuff lives on my RSS reader

"A million tabs isn’t cool. You know what's cool? A billion tabs"

2:02 PM
@JourneymanGeek No. I regularly have >100 tabs open.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask those look more like kiwis.

anybody gets the reference?

@Shubh-Khandelwal possibly...

@Ollie too bad, that's what I have to offer. For better melons, try asking @M.A.R. he always have the premium products. :D

@Ollie Methinks you might want to have a closer look at a kiwi! :)

2:03 PM
Does this remind anyone of monkeys?

Not blue, so no. ;)

@Shubh-Khandelwal reminds me of Crocodile Dundee, but I doubt that's what you had in mind.
"That's not a knife! This is a knife!"

@Mithical shade in the edit comments? :D

> "A million dollars isn't cool. You know what's cool? A billion dollars." - The Social Network (2010)
@Shu ^
@Shu's dreams are big. :)

yeah
lol
@ShadowWizardWearingMask you got it

it's my fav movie

@ShadowWizardWearingMask And their references more recent by a couple of decades!

@terdon classic

there are some inaccuracies but it's inspiring to watch

I prefer "There is no spoon"

2:06 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask for those of us above a certain age threshold :P

@ShadowWizardWearingMask yeah but they're still dreams :(

@Y'all I'll be going now. Ta!

@Shubh-Khandelwal I won't shatter your dreams, but also hope you'll learn to accept the fact there's a big chance they'll always stay only dreams. :)
That said, don't stop trying. :D
@Ollie cya!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask why do you think so?
Were all of the founders of big tech just 'lucky'?

2:10 PM
@Shubh-Khandelwal life experience, that's all. And built-in pessimism, which isn't really a good thing. :)

heck, I'm really pessimistic too

@Shubh-Khandelwal of course not! But we hear only about those who succeed.

or I think I might just be depresseed
idk

@Shubh-Khandelwal Lucky, smart and morally bankrupt.

There are millions who try and never succeed, and nobody ever hear of them.

2:11 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Hey buddy, it's OK, I've heard of you! :P

yeah I agree 100%

@Shu just don't let it get you down, that's all. :)

@Shubh-Khandelwal you can edit
For two minutes

2:12 PM
Hover the message, arrow will appear to the left, clicking it reveals a menu.
Nice! :)
But after two minutes.... kaboom! Can't edit or delete.
So careful with what you post, as it will stay forever. :D
Then in 10 years, people like me can dig it up.
e.g. let's dig something ancient now....

Well, I was gonna say something about copy con website.htm... but shucks, Notepad takes the cake.

sometimes I feel like I've lost all motivation and focus
sometimes I feel useless
I know that is not true but...

@Shubh-Khandelwal happens to the best, just lay low until you feel better. :)
Or sleep.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask lol I can't with all the caffeine XD

But in general, the one thing that really helps is really really simple, yet cruel: lower expectations. @Shu
Well, that'a what helped/s me. Each and their own, of course. :)

that hurts me mentally, but yeah i guess I have to

2:17 PM
Not yet, you can still try just don't let it bring you down to a place you can't get out from.

(e.g. don't spend all your money on something without a backup plan)

ok
@ShadowWizardWearingMask my first goal rn is to get a job at google

@Shubh-Khandelwal good luck with that! :)

I'm gonna be starting college next week; sucks to do college online
@ShadowWizardWearingMask thanks. I've been doing leetcode and codewars for a long time now, but I'm just out of high school, so I don't know if they'll accept me. I mean they've specified their minimum qualification to be B.Sc. but I've seen 13 year olds get into FAANG, so...
They probably reach out directly
many of them are pseudo-intellectuals
some of them are prodigies

2:24 PM
Why would you want to work in a place like that!?

@terdon what?
I don't understand

You'd have to leave your morals at the door and you'd just be one faceless drone among thousands, exploited and overworked.
I mean, to each their own, of course, but I can't imagine ever wanting to work for one of those horrible companies.

I am talking about Google

Yes. Me too.

I don't think so

Rob
2:26 PM

Google is actually one of the best companies to work for

OK. I know I would never work at Google. Their entire business model is based on stealing people's data. I find that morally repugnant. But that's my hang up. If that's what you want to do, go for it.

@terdon most mega-corps are like that
and uh

@Shubh-Khandelwal Just make sure they never let you work for longer than they're paying for ;)

@JourneymanGeek Few are as bad as Google. First because few are as mega, and second because most don't have a business model that relies on destroying privacy.

2:28 PM
I actually tried there a few times for a job I thought would be more interesting than where I am now :D

@terdon They don't steal it, you consent to give them your data

@Shubh-Khandelwal lol

marketing is king, and marketing requires data

@Shubh-Khandelwal for certain values of concent

that's essentially what most businesses who rise above a certain level become

2:29 PM
I have never consented to give facebook anything, for example, don't even have an account there. They still use tracking cookies on me.

Browser fingerprinting.

Rob
The problem is the wages offered, they get a lot of applications so they don't need to offer much.

And they now fire you if you rock the boat. Everything we hear on the news suggests that the nice, healthy tech-geek atmosphere these companies were built on is a thing of the past and their employees are nothing but interchangeable parts these days. And treated accordingly.

@terdon and at this point, they're big enough to afford to be able to do that :/

2:31 PM
@Rob but if a candidate is accepted at other companies, you can get a good salary. eg: if you get an offer from google and lyft, but lyft offers you $270k while google was only offering $250k, Google can upgrade your TC to $300k

most people who work at faang are generally happier than other companies
so, why not work for them?

@Shubh-Khandelwal Or that's what they want you to think

Rob
@Shubh-Khandelwal They don't pay that unless you have a lot of experience or school; there's no way B.Sc would be offered that.

and well, different folks are motivated by different things
money, interesting work, pesky things like morals, hell, even idealism sometimes
"happy" is imprescise

and could also mean "they're so brainwashed by society they think they are happy as they slowly die inside"

So, @JourneymanGeek, what should I do according to you?

@Shubh-Khandelwal citation very much needed

@Tinkeringbell Fantastic :D

think for yourself, and do as thou wilt :D

2:36 PM
@Rubiksmoose Thanks to Geek for bringing it to my attention too :P

what would make @Tinkeringbell or @terdon happy might not make me happy

It also depends on what you as an individual require to be "happy". For me, doing work that doesn't come into conflict with my sense of ethics is absolutely essential. Which is the main reason I wouldn't be happy if I worked at FAANG.
or what @JourneymanGeek said more succinctly than I, as usual.

@JourneymanGeek I know, chocolate is poisonous to dogs ;)

@Tinkeringbell as well as our concept of the perfect sammich. Sprinkles?

2:38 PM
Eh, only from time to time ;)
Mostly cheese or meat ;)

Let's say these companies collect data. Let's say that's their business model. But how does it affect an employee tho? I mean you get a really high pay, free food, free insurance, and lots of other stuff.
Personally, for me, I think it's ok, because no matter what, I think I would be happy if I were in a company like Google, because I wouldn't care that much about morals. Anyway, it's almost impossible to shut down a company like google or FB, so, I'd rather join em for the perks. But if I consistently think or feel, I'm not happy, I'd quit.

@Shubh-Khandelwal It's not really how does it affect an employee, but also 'how does that employee eventually affect the world around them'. It's... a bit like prostitution. If done well, it won't really harm anyone, but people may still have moral objections. But the trouble starts when people are being forced into jobs as prostitutes...
It may even be a luxury position to be able to decide you won't work for certain companies out of matters of principle.

but what if 20 years later your regret not accepting that job
small companies collect data too
and companies don't just say out loud that they do
so, you really don't know which company to choose
you can work yourself
but 9/10 times startups fail
so, just having a backup feels safer
Im gonna have to go
bye

bye! It was interesting talking to you :)

2:54 PM
@Shubh-Khandelwal you wasted 20 years of your life wishing for what didn't happen instead of making it awesome :D

Rob
@Shubh-Khandelwal I know the feeling, if the owner isn't going to listen I gotta go too; do you think they'll listen to you, or you'll have to listen to them?
The startups fail because they don't listen to the experienced people that they've hired; they've got a bad idea that they are determined to follow, no matter how many times it's proven to fail.

sounds familiar :D

Rob
Standard business practice. 9/10 times it's what they set out to do, fail.
Far different from Google's business model is the "pack in as many people as possible" business model; like restaurants, theaters, sports events, etc. Now, if they can't make the same amount of money with 25% the number of people they've got a problem.
Even if you can get by with fewer people coming in there's an additional expense of cleaning extensively between customers.
For a bonus, if an employee gets sick you are closed for a week trying to figure out who else is ill.

3:42 PM
@Rob thanks, now we also have something for yellow. @Ollie should see this tomorrow as well.
And now my time has come too. Cya!

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask You'll enjoy searching for the duplicate image.

@JourneymanGeek of course

2 hours later…
5:48 PM
@Rob you mean reverse image search on Google? Didn't see anything special...

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask At least go as far as page 2.

So uh...I need some advice because something's happened and I don't know what to do...?

hmm?

Uh.........well, what happened is,

6:21 PM
An online friend of mine over Slack suddenly mysteriously closed their account after saying some...concerning things, and I'm getting quite worried about them

(no offense @Rob but that slow-loading gif was driving me crazy)

@EleezatheCharacterWizard Do you have an alternative way of contacting them or somebody close to them?

I have another online friend who knows them personally but I can't reach them either because they're away for productivity reasons
Other than that, nope

Rob
@Rubiksmoose Could have unboxed it, no matter; it loads instantly for most of us, check your connection.

@EleezatheCharacterWizard What does "away for productivity reasons" mean? As in disabled notifications and not checking?

6:24 PM
it was reaaaaly slow for me too.. and i'm on a, normally very good connection. :shrug:

@Rob (I can't edit, I'm but a lowly RO :-) But my connection is actually generally pretty fast)

Rob
K
The interested can view it there.

Okay... I don't know much about how Slack works. Can the owner of the workspace check for an email account or something?

I don't think so
I thought the best course of action would be to wait and see what happens
Because this has happened before and the person returned within a week...

6:26 PM
Sounds like you don't have many options... if it's a serious safety concern, you could consider messaging the other person and hoping they see it...

Yeah...maybe I will
They should be back soon, hopefully

But sounds like basically your only option is to wait and see. :/

Oh well...
I do hope nothing bad has happened

(Depending on the severity, seriousness, and level of suspected danger, contacting their local police is an option but I can't recommend that if they're located in the US.)

Not just the US, it's also not recommended over here (Netherlands)

Rob
6:38 PM
@Rubiksmoose You can double check with this, there's no pause on the first and last frames, and it's reasonably smooth:

@Rob Yep that one is smooth

Rob
Dunno what happened with the other one ...
They're approximately the same size.

No idea :)

@Mithical Yep, they're in the US, I'm all the way in the UK, and (hopefully) it shouldn't be too severe...
I don't think police will need to be involved

YO I AM BACK

6:44 PM
I'm rene

Hi, I'm Tink!

I mean
my name isn't back
lol

hey there Isn't Back!
;-)

Well, it seems like after this was finally implemented, I've lost the title of having the most questions to @Glorfindel...

Rob
6:58 PM
Careful, he's mean too.

@Shubh-Khandelwal If I forget to lock the door I'm kinda to blame for the robbery, but the robber is still a thief
@Rob It was funny 👍

Rob
Even with all the tools and some instructions, still couldn't do it correctly.

8:23 PM
....Israel != Lebanon... unsure why exactly you pinged me and Sha

😆

@Mithical Well, ask "Mr. President" :D

@Mithical Dayum, the explosion was so big it might have affected you
:(

@M.A.R. That explosion was big, but not "cover multiple countries" big

8:40 PM
that explosion was ridiculously big
has anyone reported yield yet?

@ArtOfCode I've read something like 2400 tons of ammonium nitrate. But all data right now is suspect

aye
and ideally you want it in kt of TNT for reference

Nice
They're saying it was "highly explosive materials, [which] were confiscated years ago from a ship"... but that kinda implies solid explosive, which doesn't match with the type of explosion

9:07 PM
💥

Rob
@Mithical Blast felt 150 miles away, in Cyprus.
Super close-up, less than a few hundred feet: twitter.com/Archer83Able/status/1290682368794271744

9:20 PM
@Rob That looks like ammunition exploding ...
> Lebanon's Prime Minister Hassan Diab has said it is "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were being stored in a warehouse.

Rob
9:34 PM
@DavidPostill Probably, this happened: fleetmon.com/vessels/rhosus_8630344_46589 - The fertilizer has one of the lowest detonation velocities: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_explosive_detonation_velocities
The "ammo exploding" appearance may be DDT.

1 hour later…
Rob
10:55 PM
On 4 August 2020, multiple explosions occurred in the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The blasts occurred at the Port of Beirut, and left at least 78 people dead, more than 4,000 injured, and many more missing. The Director General of Lebanese General Security stated the explosion was linked to 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been confiscated and stored in the port for years. == Explosions == The first, smaller explosion sent a cloud of smoke above fires and created flashing lights said to resemble fireworks. The second explosion was much more substantial. It occurred at about...
Half of Israel is as far from the explosion as Cyprus is, where the explosion was also felt:

11:56 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Nope, old. Definitely old - you made me remember going to Bookshops (with a capital "B") before there was a B&N or Borders and knowing the old gal or guy who ran the place and simply asking for a book to be put back when it came out
Then they would grill you to make sure you really wanted the book before begrudgingly accepting your money and promising to reserve you a copy
.....because secretly they just wanted to keep all the books
