00:00 - 13:0013:00 - 00:00

1:01 PM
I read most of what Illona Andrews (the both of them) and it's really good

Well, terdon recommended I read N. K. Jemisin, and I've been patiently biding my time until the prey is unattentive

What's really sad is that there's almost no high fantasy with female protagonists. It's almost always guys and the arc is often very similar

Read Beowulf

@M.A.R. I like N.K. Jemisin, didn't she write the Inheritance Trilogy?

Sad not because I'm a stickler for diversity in writing but because variety is interesting

1:05 PM
Think so

@M.A.R. yeah, she did...

are you talking about eragon
or what is the inheritance trilogy?

@Magisch apparently this lady is diverse alright but I dunno the altitude of her fantasy

@Magisch Eragon is pretty cool, but no, I'm talking about NK Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy.
@M.A.R., have you read Nnedi Okorafor?

I shall give that a try next

1:06 PM
I think that's how you spell it...

Mistborn from Sanderson is really really good btw

@Ollie Nope
Just read the Tavern's transcript

@M.A.R. you should try it, there's two called Akata Witch and Akata Warrior.
They're pretty good.

also (it works better when you read it while still a kid but I still enjoyed it) all the stuff in the percy jackson universe

@Magisch been there, read it all.
There's a lot.

1:08 PM
@Magisch I hate the movies with a passion so I'm practicing social distancing with that one

@Magisch The writing in his newer stuff is much better, but I find the world-building in Mistborn is still some of his best work

if I had kids that is what I would give them to read first
@M.A.R. the books are better
and there are a lot of books in the same universe

They always are

@M.A.R. the PJ movies?

Percy jackson (all of them), trials of apollo, the kane chronicles, magnus chase

1:09 PM
Yep

easily 15 books

Dude, I don't have all the time in the world

sdc coffee M.A.R

@Ollie brews a cup of jQuery for @M.A.R

sdc coffee Magisch

1:11 PM
@Ollie brews a cup of Latte for @Magisch

sdc coffee Everyone

@Ollie brews a cup of Affogato for @Everyone

@Ollie I wonder if the author is aware just how good his work is for non neurotypical kids

hmmm...

when i was like 15 I loved percy jackson so much i've reread it a few times since then

1:13 PM
@Magisch I'm not sure if it's high fantasy.. but it's on a different planet and involves some mindreading so it's definitely some kind of fantasy... If you like female protagonists, the renunciates books of the darkover series might be a thing you could check out?

@Magisch Juliet McKenna, Rosemary Kirstein. And jamesdavisnicoll.com/reviews is a great source of reviews to find more books yu might like.
Lois McMaster Bujold.

@ColeValleyGirl Female protagonists?
I haven't read many of her fantasy stuff, but I love the Vorkosigan saga. Does she have female protagonists in her fantasy works? I don't remember.

@terdon The second Chalion book has a female protagonist

@terdon Rosemary Kirstein write The Steerswoman series... Juliet McKenna (from her blog): So I went looking for a heroine with a mind of her own, with a network of friends and a life of her own living in a world where wizards have to make a living as much as anyone else and have to deal with the suspicions of everyday folk as well as the local civil powers. If my heroine was going to go on a quest, it would not be her own choice and it would certainly not be the usual kind of adventure.

What qualifies as high fantasy? I love Tamora Pierce books and most of her leads are strong women (teens).

1:23 PM
@MadScientist Ah yes, the reluctant saint, right?
@ColeValleyGirl That sounds cool!
@Magisch read N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy. First because it is absolutely bloody brilliant, very well written and a completely new take on fantasy. And aso because the heroine is female and absolutely kickass too!
3

I shall return to this conversation when I'm home and make a long list of stuff to read next

@terdon Chalion's been mentioned. I'm not sure if the Penric series of novella qualified -- Penric is male, but the thirteeen demons he houses within himself are all female...

@terdon I think there are reluctant saints in every book of that trilogy ;-)

Some great female characters in the Keltiad Series by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison too.

Scalzi tweets about her a lot and I've been meaning to read something but I have no energy to read after a day working. 🤣
@ColeValleyGirl 🤨

1:27 PM
@ColeValleyGirl For some reason I never fell in love with Bujold's fantasy work, so I've only read a couple or so.

@Catija I knew that feeling many years ago. Not so much now.

As the Profile tab, Achievements icon, and inbox grow in size due to swelling reputation, and badge earnings

I finished lightbringer by brent weeks on the weekend and I'm not sure how to feel about it

Wouldn't it be better to count your rep in "k"s, like 1.4k, to help make it smaller?

@Magisch I quite like it. At least it has a really interesting and fresh magic system. I just finished the last book a few days ago too!

1:28 PM
Then it's not precise...

@Catija if you hover over the "k" mark, it shows your exact reputation.

@Magisch is the series finished now? I jumped off at the third book

yes it is

Yeah, the last one came out recently.

I liked the magic system too it was very refreshing but some of the stuff in there was gigayuck

1:29 PM
There are hints that it might continue, but the last book tied up the story arc.
@Magisch Like?

and I don't just mean in a "that's terrible but an interesting plot device" kind of way

@Catija so if you really want to know, you could just hover over it.

@ColeValleyGirl I used to read books constantly. Now I read webpages constantly. 😩

@terdon I find the Penric novellas to be fun, but not so sure about her longer fantasy. Didn't really take to the Sharing Knife series. The Vorkosigan series are great SF -- I have a very soft spot for Cordelia. Expecially her 'shopping' habits.

@Ollie no hover on mobile.

1:30 PM
@terdon That bit where kip trains to be an iron wolf (?) and flat out buys a slave to free her later. There's some mighty yuck internal dialogue in there

@Catija ahhhh...

it was pretty hard to be sympathethic to him after that

I'd forgotten.

@ColeValleyGirl Cordelia is one of the greatest characters in all of scifi. Hands down.

😀 I often forget but I'm trying to do better. 😁

1:31 PM
@terdon Did you read the Curse of Chalion?

@terdon No aegument here.

Cordelia makes me think of Anne of Green Gables.

@Magisch hmm, it's been a while since I read the old ones but the slavery was handled quite well, I thought. Different characters had different takes, but there were certainly those who found the whole thing abhorrent.

Terdon, I'm quite fond of Rallya in A Matter of Oaths, but I would be, as I wrote her.

@MadScientist I think so. It was a bit too deist for my taste.

1:33 PM
Deist?

@terdon generally right, but that one part turned me off the rest of the series a bit

@ColeValleyGirl ooh, you got a blurb by beckie chambers on good reads! That's a hell of an endorsement!

@terdon World-building that includes a god called the Bastard can't be all bad.

Heh, fair point

@terdon She wrote an introduction to the book when it was republished a couple of years ago.

1:34 PM
I'm going to have to read it then. Didn't know you were an author.

Going now, ta!

@ColeValleyGirl Is that fantasy?

:8499605 I kinda liked that. I mean, I get what you're saying, but I also accept that he was a good choice despite being a morally bankrupt bastard.

(I removed the above because of spoilerino)

@terdon I'm not really an author any more. When it cam down to it, I enjoyed the writing but not all the hoo-ha that went with publishing. My very first editor back in 1989 wanted me to be interviewed about hats (which I used to collect) for Vogue of all things! Utter nonsense.
@Magisch No, SF.

1:36 PM
I'm fairly certain the man never had any morals to begin with

He did not, no
@ColeValleyGirl snort

@terdon There was also the fact that very few people can make a good living out of writing (Scalzi aside). I looked at what I could earn in IT, which I also enjoyed, and it was a fairly easy decision to mmake.

If anyone cares for high fantasy btw the Kate Daniels books by Illona Andrews are really good
It's a shame they aren't more well known

@ColeValleyGirl I think the thing I appreciate most about him is how hard he works to help uplift other authors. He's been a success and wants to help talented people have their own.

@terdon ... That rings a bell and I am bloody furious I can't remember what series she wrote.

1:43 PM
@Catija Definitely. I also like the fact that when he gets something wrong he admits it.

now I need to deal with it by finding the books and reading them again :D

Yeah. And he honestly wants to learn and grow.

for sicifi folks

@JourneymanGeek The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, A Closed and Common Orbit, and Record of a Spaceborn Few. Not a series as such but a set of related novels.

Cixin Liu's three body problem is really nice
But it's heavy

1:45 PM
@ColeValleyGirl the names ring a bell bit...

If we're talking SF, the Murderbot series by Martha Wells.

I can't remember what the books were ._.

as in prepare yourself to fall into a physics based rabbit hole you will emerge out of having spent days of your life researching physics concepts you will never use again

@ColeValleyGirl hah... Murderbot lacks gender though? IIRC

@JourneymanGeek True.

1:46 PM
I am rereading that :D
like literally just dug up the first ebook from my stash today

@Magisch nice, lots of cheaters to catch... ;)

@ColeValleyGirl Andy (spouse) has been reading those. Really enjoys them.

I joined a LINE group for a game I play on mobile only, where it appears to be legit to cheat with sock puppets. o_O

@ShadowWizardWearingMask It's like finding serial voting on SE except there I can officially do it
and it gets recognition :D

People there have anywhere between 2 and 12 accounts to collect rewards, and not just few - everyone except of me. lol
@Magisch yeah, you must feel like a cat that finally get access to the premium milk he always wanted.... :P

1:50 PM
More like a cat that finally gets to hunt mice

I'm going away for a while now. I'm supposed to be debugging some Lua...

@Magisch yup, on SE you get weird stares when you go hunting serial voters like "why waste your time on this?"...

Rob
@ColeValleyGirl That's the problem with pay-to-play, regardless of what you (most people) are willing to pay there's always someone who will pay more, so you will always lose.

@ColeValleyGirl good luck!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask more like "this isn't a user's job" which to be fair it really isn't

Rob
1:52 PM
I don't know why that replied to the wrong person, that was for Sha.

but I really like detective and heuristic work

@ColeValleyGirl YESH!
I'm starting to think I need to ask you for more book recommendations, @ColeValleyGirl. You keep mentioning some of my favorites!

Ryan Donovan on August 03, 2020
It can be intimidating to start contributing to an open source project. But with a little research and planning, you can be a valuable part of your favorite open source software.

🚽

who left the network?

2:07 PM
Yvette

owh :(

@Magisch It's a bit of a touchy subject, but if you recall Yvette (at the time, ex-mod on SO, mod on Pets.SE)...

yeah I know yvette

The recent SO election was quite the bonfire on Meta SO. Only a little bit of it spread to MSE.
Well, maybe more than a little.

I stayed out of it besides voting

2:10 PM
For the most part, same. Left a farewell comment on Yvette's "I'm leaving" post, though it felt a tad out of place because I didn't know Yvette... Eh.

she's a good person and I thought she was a good mod tbh

I've never seen anyone about whom opinions were so divided, at least.

I agree with you. When I was a lurker, I saw her intervening fairly often in the rougher parts of SO pre-resignation. She seemed to be performing well. Never visited Pets.SE, but eh.

@ColeValleyGirl "mismanaging" is the word I was looking for, for a long time... looks like it's like this EVERYWHERE, it's amazing. People in Israel hate the current PM for 10 years or so, but only now with the Corona mismanaging true riots begin.

what can I say, she's always been nice to me, got a little heated a little too often but was very competent handling flags and serial voting cases and was generally a nice person

2:17 PM
Can't ask for much more than that, to be honest. We all get fired up when we care that much.

@Spevacus I hope we kept that to a little :/

@JourneymanGeek I say we did :)

@JourneymanGeek You guys did actually. :) It was quite tame here in comparison to Meta SO, and that's not a slight against the SO mods: There was simply so much to sift through. Cody Gray specifically appeared to be wading through the fires.

With the exception of the question that sparked this conversation, perhaps ;)

Heh... maybe ;)

2:19 PM
@Spevacus and we had a significant amount of distance

Mhmm.

@terdon In this case I bought the whole trilogy in one edition. Opened book and, as usual, was started on the first page of actual text. Thought nothing of it. Then got to the acknowledgement section and saw it reference the actual first book. It started me at the beginning of the wrong book XD

@Magisch I'd disagree, but you already know most of that having had to live through some chatroom moderation involving the both of us ;)

@terdon I just finished this, and I loved it.

@Tinkeringbell you know how sometimes two rights can make a wrong?

2:22 PM
@Magisch I know three lefts can make a right?

You're both strong personalities, you're probably better suited to the "remain calm" side of modding, but you two definitely have a personality clash

What happened to the good ol' straight 'n narrow?

One right makes OTHER LEFT!OTHER LEEEEFFTTT!?

@Rubiksmoose yeah, it's wonderful.

I remember when I was the annoying one in here
:D

2:27 PM
@Magisch Sometimes you still are :)

awh

@Magisch It's not so much personality as morality, I think.

This feels dangerously close to gossiping about someone behind their back ._.

*sigh*

@JourneymanGeek True. Sorry, I get carried away sometimes.
Guess just holding it in and being polite is catching up with me.

@Magisch It's good that M-- brought that up, the cover-up, sweep under the rug (otherwise known as: 'forgive and forget') policy isn't one of my favorites. There are times, and things, that should be removed; but when it reduces the number of people who can still see it to a handful that invites the problems and complaints of the past year to boil up.

@Rob but deciding what should be removed is never easy nor universal

@Rob Yeah, except that M-- keeps insisting the cover-up isn't the point of the question, it's apparently a question asking for general standards on election content moderation ;)

Besides that, questions about cover ups on MSO go on MSO ;)

Rob
@Tinkeringbell Without a good spin, it won't stand up:
The Inception top

Well, I'm not spinning that. Just going round in circles is never useful anyways.

Rob
But the subtlety is that it's not all about the spin, but also the precession.

Or we can just be... on top of things...

2:48 PM
That sounds much more pleasurable though it's sometimes very hard to keep up if there's a lot of things!
It looks like I won't have to go for a walk tonight, it's raining \o/

3:10 PM
Talking about a trilogy...

I hate Lua. Just saying...

Recently I became curious what would the SOFU trilogy get their standard .SE magic link, instead of their acronym(?)
not sure if coding.se, computing.se, server.se really suit..?

@Rob peek-a-cat!
@MetaAndrewT. imagine you're a dog, then you'll have sweet dreams of a good meal. ;)
@ArtOfCode oh no! Maybe @Journeyman's dog ate it? :P
@M.A.R. Art is weird. Be thankful you didn't visit "modern art" museums, where weird is normal. :D
@Rubiksmoose well sometimes we need help fighting trolls, but yeah, usually that route is the safest bet.
5 unique pings, done for now. Cya!
oh wait, David! To have it 6...
@DavidPostill agree, trolls can grow really big when fed. ;)

6:11 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask woof!? what kind of dog is that!? and not Cya!

@Rubiksmoose I've trolled trolls once or twice on Meta, but it was definitely when we had a bit of a thicker skin and social problems seemed far far away

@Mithical When Ankit first found my Instagram page, he liked 100 of the photos... that was a lot of notifications :P

6:48 PM
The weird thing is, Ankits are supposed to be way more common than . . . whatever we are
AFAICT spending three or four hours doing nothing but scrolling social media pages is the norm
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Now that I think about it, so steampunk

No serial voting on Instagram? :p
And I find it rather odd that Reddit, Imgur, Twitter, Facebook, Telegram etc. are banned in Iran but not Instagram
Not that I'm giving them any ideas

Oh
I'm naturally being dense after hours of sleeplessness

@Mithical me too, back to full work after two weeks of partial work means lots of work... :/
And with @YaakovEllis we surely have to give few days heads up anyway.
Plus, we just switched to JIRA.
@M.A.R. so dance 🎶

@ShadowWizardWearingMask My dad never complains about work except about what he has to deal with after a long holiday

@M.A.R. ohh. Never asked. But toilet rooms in the workplace have their own toilet paper. I bring my own to my desk as I need it constantly. (runny nose, you dirty mind. ;))

@ShadowWizardWearingMask yeah sure

7:38 PM
@Spevacus or using ping scripts
@M.A.R. how to prove this to you?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask post a video of yourself doing karate with ninjas in midair while bungee jumping

@Magisch semi-high-fantasy you might like based on that: Sufficiently Advanced Magic - the protagonist is a guy but very runs between a-sexual and bi throughout and his female cousin plays an increasingly important role as the series progresses
Note, I very much agree with you about that lack - my daughter is loving A Hat Full of Sky (esp. because the main character "is a girl!" <- to quote her :). Finding more books like this has been more difficult then it should be (ignoring the "finding books as good as Pratchett" which is a whole different thing ;) )
Also regarding all that: Mistborn (both old and new series) are some of my favorites

@LinkBerest Such a great book :-) Love Tiffany Aching.

I never thought I'd find one of my favorite Prachett series in the children's section - I must admit
.....also I missed a closing double quote in that and it haunts me
