3:43 AM
Not so morning

4:42 AM
@SonictheMaskedWerehog was, some time. I have no idea what happened to it
@Rob Well, things are extremely cheap here, so a McDonald's employee's monthly salary is the monthly salary of a well-off job here.
Regardless, such comparisons and salary calculators terribly fail at grasping the whole picture. Our worlds are so different that a lot of work payments here don't make sense and a lot of benefits there don't make sense here either

Rob
5:03 AM
@M.A.R. Apparently you have: "Mash Donalds, Boof Burger, Subways, Sheak Shack, Pizza Hat, etc.", so I'd compare how much is a hamburger or pizza there vs. here. How much does a comparable car (or bicycle, if that's more reasonable) cost. How much is a home with a tiny bit of land (if there's such a thing). Basically compare the cost of living vs. earnings. If everyone is guaranteed a job and a home (as in another country) that changes
things compared to where one must pay for everything - even medical can make you broke.

Medical don't make you broke here

Rob
I understand that the comparison isn't simple, nor is moving to the so-called greener grass (which isn't in North America).

Some people apparently prefer to be treated here than the US :p
@Rob Well, if we're going with 20k dollar prices, a nice hammy burger with all the stuff in it costs 1 dollar.
There are no big franchises here like the MacDonald's, so even that comparison isn't simple
There's incredibly heavy tariff on foreign cars here. For the normal chap, if you don't have connections. They want to encourage us to buy the amazing products Iranian car companies montage, so natural selection is sped up.
And we have many millions of Iranian citizens below the poverty line, and I think it's getting worse. The economic gap is ever widening.
I think you're starting to see why I don't go out too often. Even a physiology textbook counts as escapist.
And finally, everything is more expensive in Tehran compared to even other 'big' cities.
Tabriz isn't that big I guess, especially by western standards. I really love this city though

Rob
@M.A.R. Average daily US hospital cost is: 165932677.94 IRR (U$3,949). Source: debt.org/medical/hospital-surgery-costs

HOLY MOLY
The money we paid the donor aside, my kidney transplant cost around 10M tomans, I think.
(100M rials)
I was hospitalized for twenty two days
BBL breakfast

Rob
5:15 AM
@M.A.R. McDonald's has a special ATM, where all the big meals are U$5 (so, Big Mac burger is $5).
@M.A.R. We have cities where the prices for everything is unreasonable, mostly an area of the city; example everywhere sells tiny coffee cup for $1.50, where you should at least get a medium. Places that have long hours charge more than places that are only open 8 hours a day. Etc. Many ways to be ripped off if you can't be bothered to travel for better deal.
@M.A.R. but not at Mash Donald's ;)
Here donor can not be paid, but it will cost you a kidney (figuratively) to get one put in.

starting to help development on backend...
in addition to mobile apps --> compile time = increase!

6:00 AM
@MetaAndrewT. Ugh. Is it at levels of time yet where you can at least do something else, or is it at that in-between stage where you're stuck doing nothing for seconds/minutes at a time?

Rob
It used to be that you could eat while the compilation and test suite ran, now you'd be lucky to get to make a coffee. The cost of progress.

I still can work on another, if only I remember to go back and continue the original task :|
not so good at multitasking...

JG, A modern cellphone is a bit faster and can accept a full size screen and keyboard:
Samsung DeX is a feature included on some high-end Samsung handheld devices that enables users to extend their device into a desktop-like experience by connecting a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. The name "DeX" is a contraction of "Desktop eXperience". Samsung first included the DeX feature on Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones, and has continued to support the feature on all of its latest flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S9, S10, S20, Note8, Note9 and Note10 series throughout Android Pie. The Galaxy A90 5G is the first Galaxy A phone with DeX support. It has also been introduced...

@Rob whooosh
the joke is using a slower system so compiles take longer

Rob
Ah, it wasn't clear that you were replying to my comment from earlier; I'm using the milliseconds between commands to switch to this tab.

@Rob oh the conversation in general
I actually use my windows tablet as a second screen for my work PC when on night shift for more efficient work. miracast is awesome

Rob
6:35 AM
A big laptop tablet is nice for home use, watching videos without squinting.

@Rob 11ish inches
though the SP7 is a different aspect ratio than most, so feels bigger

Rob
Ha, my phone is 6.2"
I have the widescreen 18.5:9 ratio, barely sticks out of my jean's pocket.

the SPs are 3:2 ?
so almost like an oldschool monitor
won't fit in a pocket

Rob
Need cargo pants :)

not big enough
I'd need a work apron ala adam savage :D

Rob
6:50 AM
Wouldn't be comfortable.

I can fit a VHS tape in most of my pants' pockets

@ShadowWizardWearingMask There was cake involved. Of course I get notified if there is cake involved.

@SonictheMaskedWerehog either you have big pockets or small tape, the standard tape I know from 20 years ago won't fit in standard jeans pockets.

I don't wear jeans

So cargo pants?
Well that can indeed explain how it fits.

6:55 AM
Athletic pants

You run a lot?

Not that much; they're comfortable though

I have cargo pants, and carpenter pants, won't fit.

@Sonic something like those? asos.com/nike/…
The pocket does seem handy, never thought to buy such pants, always used pants without pockets while running. (in the distant past.... ;))

Yeah, kind of

6:59 AM
@Bart oh..... you have the CakeDetectAndNotify3000™ installed, of course! How could I not see it sooner..... :D
Historical moment: both @Bart and @Meta are in the room together.... :P

@ShadowWizardWearingMask actually someone turns on a searchlight with a cake on it

Now we just need Norm back and all is back to its old self.

@MetaAndrewT. u haz noo powerz hir!
@Rob surely there's something more disgusting, plus there are people who love it.
I mean, some people love to eat things that aren't even food.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask not very many things...
rotten shark meat maybe?

What I mean, is that "disgusting" is relative and per-person, so statements related to this can't be 100% accurate. ;)

Rob
There's rotten fish, but is that really worse than maggots? Whale poo doesn't sound good either, but it's served with eggs (which I don't eat anyways, so no harm there).

Why go far with the poo?!
:D
Wait, let's serve some...

@Rob better in what way?

@rene of course, and did it wonderfully. :D

That was an answer to the line prior to your next question. Amber's wouldn't have hair in it.

I also don't have hair in it.
Back to sanity...
@Journeyman @Tink there are over 140 questions on MSE with , maybe better consider removing the tag from older questions that aren't relevant anymore?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'd rather leave it for the staff

Since that's now the official queue, better have it as small and focused as possible, with what we really want.

Rob
Yes, they should remove or delete, rather than the mods flicking them on and off.

> Questions with this tag from across the network will be automatically added to an internal tracking system.

Rob
7:33 AM
Close no-repro if it's that old.

So I'm pretty confident in saying that we shouldn't touch those tags, they're tracked internally.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask even if I had, wouldn't work either, if you know what I mean...

@Tinkeringbell but you can add the tag to questions, so why not remove it where you see fit?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Because I have a list of when to add them, but not one of when to remove them.

Rob
Like a donation bin. Deposit only, no withdrawals.

7:35 AM
@Tinkeringbell so there should be one.... going to write feature request
:)

The idea is also that we can add the tag, no one ever mentioned curating the list to remove those. If you want that, probably write up a post we can tag status-review XD

@Rob maybe at your place.... here not so much. They're totally two-way.

status-almost-reviewed

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask They were "two-way" but so many people got stuck inside or hung upsidedown that they padlocked them until they could redesign them.

7:42 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask The question was promoting a different unit for mass, so I had marked it as spam when reviewing. However, I am awaiting a moderator response.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask you could bring it up on meta :D

@JourneymanGeek or down. ;)

A: Submitting a question directly when there is no feedback

Gariman SinghFirst of all, the possibility of submitting a question without a review was a bug not a feature and the bug is now gone for good. There is no harm in having a review process check our questions. Spending just a few extra seconds for another click is nothing compared to the time the community will...

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask it's unlikely, and not the intended purpose, that people put money in a bin:
Many have signs now saying not to use, closed due to COVID.
Now rags and literally garbage.pile up around the bin, no climbing in (when possible) necessary.
If the poor go to these places and ask for clothes they are provided with a fairly decent and washed set of clothes.

7:58 AM
@Rob ohh, it's for clothes.... thought you meant those small bins for money.
e.g. this one:

Rob
We have "give a penny, take a penny", but then the penny was abolished.

lol
Well here they're not meant to give, just take, but people take anyway from it.

Rob

@Rob it's not... usually kids do it.
I personally didn't, but got a friend who did.
He didn't open it, just shook it upside down until the coin(s) fell through the slot.

@DavidPostill ducked?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask brews a cup of Affogato for @Gar

> In medieval times until the early 18th century, ducking was a way used to establish whether a suspect was a witch. The ducking stools were first used for this purpose but ducking was later inflicted without the chair.

If they survived it was the proof they're witches.

> In this instance the subject's right thumb was bound to her left big toe. A rope was tied around the waist of the accused and she was thrown into a river or deep pond. If she floated, it was deemed that she was in league with the devil, rejecting the baptismal water. If she sank, she "was cleared. And dead"
If they didn't they were not witches but dead anyway ...

10:22 AM
@DavidPostill I don't know the meaning of the word "ducked/ducking" itself, as you don't mean the usual meaning which is to dodge something.
Is it slang?

Cucking stools or ducking stools were chairs formerly used for punishment of disorderly women, scolds (people accused of being troublesome and angry and who habitually chastised, argued and quarrelled with their neighbours) and dishonest tradesmen in England, Scotland, and elsewhere. The cucking-stool was a form of wymen pine, or "women's punishment," as referred to in Langland's Piers Plowman (1378). They were both instruments of public humiliation and censure primarily for the offense of scolding or back biting and less often for sexual offences like bearing an illegitimate child or prostitution...
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Not really, but not common usage any more.

@DavidPostill true, first time I hear about that word with such a meaning. I did know that witches were also tortured a lot, just didn't know all those gory details. ;)

2. push or plunge (someone) under water, either playfully or as a punishment.
"Rufus grabbed him from behind to duck him under the surface"

@DavidPostill saw this on Google, but since it mentions water didn't pay much attention to it.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Yeah, well that's what the ducking stool does.

10:25 AM
Anyway, duckface is much better to think about. :D

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Welcome to Tavern on the Meta @Gari! I'm SmokeDetector, a bot that detects spam and offensive posts on the network, and posts alerts to chat. You can find more about me on the Charcoal website.

@DavidPostill isn't that just waterboarding? I didn't know the practice was this old.

10:27 AM
hmm.... @ArtOfCode as one of its developers, what you think about adding another part to Smokey's welcome message about coffee and tea?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ah! How does it send messages? Do you give some sort of commands?

e.g. "a bot that detects spam and offensive posts on the network, posts alerts to chat, and serves hot beverages on request".
@GarimanSingh it can both post all by its own, triggered by spam posted across the network, and follow commands.

@JohnDvorak I guess so ...

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ok. Now, I get it. So, earlier when you had written "why sd", was that command as well?

Again: What to do against those Robo-Upvoters? Ideas anyone?
@GarimanSingh Check here: charcoal-se.org/smokey/Commands

10:38 AM
do nothing... mods can't check, need CM, but is it that serious?

It's an increasing phenomenon as far I observed.

@GarimanSingh yes, it was "sd why", the "sd" in the beginning means a command directed to Smoke Detector's latest report, followed by the actual command.
@πάνταῥεῖ as long as it's a single user/vote it's not that bad.
If you'll notice more than one upvote on spam/off topic question it's a different story.
