@M.A.R. and I can?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask He might let you. Will I? :D
@M.A.R. so... interesting local scandal
One of the ruling party candidates put up a very passionate video complaining someone posted something about his son, who got in trouble with the law
No one can find the video he is referring to with the "scarrlious accusations"
no one would have known...
his opponent is like "Dude, that's NOT cool. I want to kick your ass cleanly, not by muckraking"

@JourneymanGeek I can go on a spree of dog pics.
:D
@JourneymanGeek yeah, even Trump leaves his son out of the game.

5:51 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask only...

Here our PM got a son who bully people on Twitter on regular basis.

no one knows what said accusations were
even our equivilent of 4chan

@JourneymanGeek probably nothing, he made it up to gain sympathy.
Politicians are making up stuff all the time, nothing new.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Oh, sounds like there's something
but no one knows what

6:09 AM
@Memberfor3months hi, your name is out dated. ;)
Offensive indeed this time.
hmm... some offensive words are missing from the black list of Smokey.

yeah add that white stuff to the list @ShadowWizardWearingMask ;)

6:47 AM
@Luuklag can't add... actually not sure what's the proper way to request such addition... probably need to send a pull request. @Art surely knows? (How to add words to the offensive words blacklist)
But I'm pretty sure it's not on the list for a reason....
@Bart you're late for the party.
There's only coffee left for you.
sdc tea Luuk

@ShadowWizardWearingMask brews a cup of chamomile tea for @Luuk

@Luuklag your About Me is borked...
Should I send you a bug report? ;)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I won't say no to that. @rene can keep his BaCo. I'll just take the Co part of it.

@Bart Aqua Cola?
The terms they use there are just priceless.
Anyway, eating another Baci now.... four left...

It was meant for @Bart, but useful when stuff is stolen too. :D

7:27 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask fixed that. Shame that proposal never made it.

@Luuklag is Area 51 still alive at all? Were there any new sites launched to beta since Robert was kicked out?
I was sure it's the end of Area 51, as there's nobody there to manage the place anymore.
hmm... looks like it's alive, with Brian inside. Oh well... still, most proposals never make it to beta, they must have a large user base to begin with in order to move forward.

7:50 AM
@Bart Okay, I'll take the Ba. Nothing goes to waste. Cheers!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask No such command 'ba'.

8:34 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Matter moddeling and model aircraft I believe
but those could be borderline still Roberts work
And animuson seams to be moderating on A51 as well @ShadowWizardWearingMask

@Luuklag yeah, need several people to fill Robert's boots... and that closed proposal is pure spam. Amazing they have the nerve to actually create whole new site dedicated for spam.
oh wait, it's not a company, lol. Still, @ani won't close it without good reason.

@rene So why isn't it showing the bookmark icon? It is inconsistently inconsistent :) — DavidPostill 25 mins ago

But wait, there's more! You can also show all options at all times, but also visually indicate which ones are actually available by showing those that can't be used as a fainter version of those that can. There's even ARIA support for that paradigm.
Unfortunately SO already uses grey for some stuff that can be used, and a lighter version of that gray wouldn't have enough contrast for standards compliance.

@JohnDvorak Shame we can't used greyed out icons for this as unfortunately they are all grey to start with ...

Maybe a red cross overlay? A circle and a line?

Of course UIX design would have something to say about that ...

Actually... a hollow outline might actually work - and doesn't need color theme considerations.

11:52 AM
@JohnDvorak That's way too eye catching and ugly to boot.

A freehand red circle is never too ugly. Did I not say freehand? I meant to say freehand.

Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a country situated in the confluence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is a federal republic composed of 26 cantons, with federal authorities based in Bern. Switzerland is a landlocked country bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, Germany to the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. It is geographically divided among the Swiss Plateau, the Alps, and the Jura, spanning a total area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi), and land area of 39,997 km2 (15,443 sq mi). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory...

@Rob That is not a red cross :)

@DavidPostill and that's why we show it as active, so it isn't paid attention to until needed?

11:57 AM
it's an anti-red-cross

The emblem of a red cross – with arms of equal length on a white background – is one of the most recognised symbols in the world.

Rob

I know what, I'll create a supervillain organization that adopts that symbol for its own members and all advertisements, and stain that symbol for generations to come!

> The Templar’s Cross originally came from the “Mark of Cain”. This symbol had been created over 5,000 years ago in ancient Summerian times and had been used by the followers of the One God of the “Lord” until they arrived, guided by Moses, in Palestine from Egypt.

That's not a supervillain organization. Those are the good guys.

> The Templars did adopt a red cross on their white robes in 1147, but there was no specific style designated, and different Templars used different versions of the cross. The pattée was by no means their official symbol. From the evidence of document seals, the Cross Formée and Cross Pattée with a variant form in the Pattée Formée were used in the 12th and 13th centuries. Some variations of the Cross Formée/Pattée had concave ends to the arms,

@JohnDvorak How to film it.

@Rob That's not what I mean. If someone drew a map with a desert right next to an ocean, you'd assume they're insane. Nope. It's real.

The north of that continent has one of the largest deserts, Skeleton Bay's nearby desert is quite small by comparison.

@JourneymanGeek dun dun duuuun
Lol dude, this is kinda innocent in terms of malice.
Your competition was trying to prove the last president wasn't even born in the US.
You expect from a mathematician to visualize certain things better than others. You expect from a chemist to be able to clean stains better. You expect from a doctor to live healthier. And you expect from a politician to mingle truth and lies so proficiently that you wouldn't be able to in your wildest dreams.
This? I could make up crap like this in a heartbeat.
So if it's just a huge scandal, people are/should be just rolling their eyes at one side of the argument.
> But beyond that goal, this feature is also intended to provide an alternative way for users to express their appreciation for the efforts of other users, using a paradigm that is familiar to them from other sites on the Internet.
So is this like the games where you have cash and gold? We even already have cash and gold, it's rep and badges.
If anything, my "WHY" got bigger
No insult is intended. If it makes you feel better, most of the time invested in this feature was already put in to making this work on SO for Teams, where it has met a lot of success (and we know that the use cases are different for Teams and the Public Platform). — Yaakov Ellis ♦ yesterday
Is "a lot of success" equal to "used a lot"?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask @JohnD, it's actually a crock; that Getty Images (NSFW, or at least not so useful to view at work) sells such images for over U$500!

I would ask "what the hell is wrong with this world" but I already know the answer.

Rob
You could get the plumber to come over in person for less.

4:20 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Well, the reason I'm asking is the gist of the community's complaint is not that the thanks feature will not be used, but that the more it's used, the more harmful it is.
Actually, that's it. Teams is the only place where replacing upvotes with "thanks" could make sense. Could. I've yet to find a reason it makes sense on public Q&A.

5:04 PM
@JohnDvorak meh, people pay more for much weirder things.

The Reactions feature on Teams isn't working well for all teams. LinkBerest mentioned:

o/ I'm trying to dig something up. My recollection is that in 2015 or 2016, there was a specific problematic hat that encouraged people to do a thing that, done in large numbers, was actually harmful. People complained. I don't remember what the hat or the trigger was though. What was that hat? Am I even remembering this correctly?

@M.A.R. the harm is making SO a social forum rather than a professional Q&A site.
That's what people fight so vehemently against.
But it's a lost battle.

@doppelgreener There was a hat that caused people to ping employees and/or interact with their posts that caused some issues.\

Q: Discouraging "soul-selling" for hats

Andrew LiWinter Bash 2016 has started, and is in full swing. I love hats as much as the next person, but can't help notice some "soul-selling" for them (which I am also guilty for). By "soul-selling" I mean things such as votes not based on content ("This is Fine" for example, and for badges and thus, hat...

Although IIRC, WB is being replaced with something else entirely this year

i shudder to think of what inclusivity themed event they come up with

I'd actually prefer if they dropped their attempts at "inclusivity" before the hat bash, seeing how their previous attempts at inclusivity went.

6:32 PM
Inclusivity is a pretty loaded term. I assume you are intending to mean it in the sense of being targeted towards attracting new users?

all of the above, really
the whole thing is ran by a marketing team now, so anything that gets done is going to be in the name of increasing signups

Ah, I thought that @user400654 was talking about firing people for cracking their knuckles and eating watermelon at work.
... and disliking "they".

(which is exactly why I thought it would help for the term to be clarified)

Thank you for asking
Either type of inclusivity can get messy if mishandled.

@user400654 I'd be pretty surprised if whatever they are planning (if indeed anything is being planned yet) totally neglected existing users.

6:38 PM
Winter Bash has always fairly heavily focused on power users

I had to read that a few times to look for a not in there
but it seems to be missing

@Rubiksmoose And if they do, mess number two

@user400654 If referring to me, no "not" was intended :)

@user400654 Hats for editing, close voting, network participation? Even "earn a gold badge" and the hats for switching hats every day are skewed towards existing power users

mhm

6:44 PM
@Mithical The gold badge is hard even for power users. I have most of them already for the tags I usually answer and to get more than a handful of extra rep even when close to another is not easy. Some advance planning for winter bash in say oct or nov can help though :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask That's what people vehemently fight against, but I think the biggest and more immediate harm is crippling voting even more
I don't think it'd cause a lot of quitting, certainly not like how other events like Monicagate managed to do so, but with this bug, voting becomes essentially unreliable for most questions that end up with a few views only
And that is the majority of questions, so.
@Mithical as it should be?

7:07 PM
yes

OK. You've trapped me. I cannot disagree now.

@M.A.R. Please explain why.

It's not a vertebrae, and has eight legs.

@M.A.R. You called it a feature earlier ...

Features are not supposed to cause apocalypse so easily

@M.A.R. A bug is "a miniature microphone in (a room or telephone) in order to eavesdrop on or record someone's conversations secretly". They do not have vertebrae and eight legs as far as I know ...

Pfft, you haven't watched enough movies.

7:13 PM
@M.A.R. Except maybe the features on your avatar's face :)

Tom's whiskers caused an apocalypse?
I slept through that one

@M.A.R. Jerry seems to thin so quite often ...

OK. How many episodes and shorts where Tom wins, and how many where Jerry wins?

define win

Impale the other on a stick, or burn the other one with acid, no wait, that was Itchy and Scratchy
Well, in Cat Concerto, Jerry ends up getting the applause, the little arsehole.

Q: It seems like a loop hole that I'll have to go into a room to leave the other room

Ann ZenIf I click "leave" in a chat room, as many of you know, I could still be there. @user400654 :O
HOW DARE YOU
Serially downvotes usernumbernumbers

as long as it's not my meta se posts, rep there is precious

@M.A.R. it's unclear what the problem is

@Mithical BTW, now that I loaded this message, this sort of thing is exactly why I'm loath to discuss these things with atheists (besides the obvious potential for escalation of course).

@AnnZen you might be using more than one device, e.g. if you have a chat room open both in a browser on desktop computer and on a mobile device, you'll indeed have to leave on each device otherwise you'll still be in the room. There's no "Force leave on all devices" link. — Shadow Wizard Wearing Mask 4 hours ago
Maybe?

7:31 PM
An atheist can feel superior all they want, but you can't discuss these things with someone you consider inferior.

@Mithical it is?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Thank, but I believe the problem is solved. I just need to know where this link chat.stackoverflow.com/chats/leave/all came from. (I am only using one device.) — Ann Zen 4 hours ago
Just the one device it seems.

@M.A.R. Hey that's great. Now we can stop discussing religion as we are all inferior to someone with a different religion :)

it must be quite boring to be superior to everyone and therefore unable to engage in discussion

One fallacy that both sides commit: Theists say things like "but what the atheist does cannot be true! They don't believe in God, whatever they do is selfish/impure/not bad but kinda bad/me no likey". Atheists say "but what the theist does is definitely purely based on fear of hell or God's wrath or for wanting of heaven"

7:33 PM
The best explanation I can think of is that the OP feels it's weird to have to enter a chat room in order to click the "(all)" button to leave all chat rooms they're currently in. It feels weird to have to be in a chat room to clear yourself out of all of them, I guess.
Personally neither here nor there on it but I can understand where the disconnect is.

@user400654 But he's not. Everybody else thinks he is inferior to them :)

The sword cuts both ways, and you cannot discuss things if you immediately label the other side as selfish or impure.

yep

That's exactly what that post does.

it's unfortunate that people make mountains out of mole hills

7:35 PM
@user400654 But it's not a mole hill. Every religion says every other religion is inferior to theirs.

Why is it so hard for someone to just accept that I, as an atheist, just... don't care about the same things someone else does

P.S. "Why does God create atheists" presupposes many things, one of which is that there's no free will.
So, a giant rabbit hole.
As big as French caves.
Or was that Spain?

like, believe what you want. if you get elected by a majority, push your views, your policies. that's the game.

Whichever side claims that, to prove or disprove anything, has to prove a lot first.

@M.A.R. The US have that record "On the surface, Mammoth National Park in central Kentucky encompasses around 80 square miles, but underneath lies a twisting labyrinth of limestone caves, creating a network that earns the title of the longest cave system in the world"

7:38 PM
@user400654 Yes, other than on ideological grounds, these labels are often red herrings for "science bad" "democrat good" "republican good" "I love french fries and you can't make me not like them"

@YaakovEllis so the rumors say
As an aside, I would love to hear suggestions from people that have nothing to do with hats. This was the 8th year we've done the same thing with different triggers and to be honest, I turned them off this year because I've gotten kind of bored with the idea. There's got to be something else fun and interesting we can do at the end of the year that isn't just repeating the same thing over and over. Be creative and don't be tied to the idea of "we must do hats again next year" - maybe if we have something really cool we don't have to... — animuson ♦ Jan 3 '19 at 18:38

I do get bothered by people pushing "in god we trust" onto everything government related, but it's not because i hate religion or anything like that

@user400654 Well TBH this is of little consequence. You might find reading yesterday's transcript, when it gets hot, interesting, and get up-to-date on what we're talking about

@M.A.R. Now that was a rabbit hole :)

7:41 PM
Well, I wasn't planning on reigniting the whole thing, I just saw Mith has posted something that was starred and I expected it to be about fairies or flying books or whatever he dreams about.
@DavidPostill But well worth exploring
We can talk about something else now.

eh, don't really feel like digging it up
if the gist is that some people speak from a PoV that they're superior... yeah... i've dealt with plenty of that, most of which wasn't at all related to religion

@M.A.R. Have you seen "What the Bleep! Down the Rabbit Hole"?
What the Bleep Do We Know!? (stylized as What tнē #$*! D̄ө ωΣ (k)πow!? and What the #$*! Do We Know!?, with Bleep being a pronounceable placeholder for a grawlix) is a 2004 American film that combines documentary-style interviews, computer-animated graphics, and a narrative that posits a spiritual connection between quantum physics and consciousness. The plot follows the fictional story of a photographer as she encounters emotional and existential obstacles in her life and begins to consider the idea that individual and group consciousness can influence the material world. Her experiences are offered...

@DavidPostill Hmm, is it angsty, or profound?
They're often the former

Profound would be my take.

yeah, not to drum up the conversation, but, clearly i'm a very different kind of atheist

27% Rotten Tomatoes is not a good sign but I'll take your word for it

7:48 PM
🚽

@M.A.R. ""WHAT THE #$*! DO WE KNOW?!" is a radical departure from convention. It demands a freedom of view and greatness of thought so far unknown, indeed, not even dreamed of since Copernicus. It's a documentary. It's a story. It's mind-blowing special effects.
This film plunges you into a world where quantum uncertainty is demonstrated - where neurological processes, and perceptual shifts are engaged and lived by its protagonist - where everything is alive, and reality is changed by every thought. "

@user400654 I thought our discussion was rather general?

I see religion as an overall benefit to society, and don't necessarily fault relligion itself with the atrocities that occured in the past

@DavidPostill Well TBH gathering quantum physics and neurology under a single umbrella is also a red flag because it'd mean it's not going to have a serious discussion on either

I more or less view it as a government.... for practical purposes

7:50 PM
@user400654 There's more than one kind of Atheist?

sure

But I added it to my infinitely long Watchlist, I'll check it out
@DavidPostill Sure, you have Dawkins and you have everyone else.

i believe some go way too far out of their way to attack things they apparently don't believe in

There's also Hume and Nietzsche which can't seem to find a seat anywhere.

@user400654 But basically it is no god(s) right? So where do the differences arise?

7:51 PM
at a basic level, purely by definition, you're right

@DavidPostill Well, you have people shrugging about God's existence and you have people trying to prove to absolutely every living soul on Earth that he doesn't exist as if we watched it with a Telescope and confirmed it.

but just like there's more than one kind of conservative, there's more than one kind of anything else

@M.A.R. Yeah, well every religion has some fanatics

I prefer to not use the atheist label
more... not religious... which is more the definition

@DavidPostill You're being too relativistic for my taste

iunno
i don't like all the baggage that comes with it.
because often when someone very religious hears atheist it comes with a very negative connotation, because all they hear about are the ones who make the news.

But a label these days is something people identify with, maybe even before acknowledging their humanity. If someone says "I'm a feminist" upfront, I'd rather expect they're the fanatic kind that assumes men are biologically faulty and not the kind that peacefully promotes gender equality.

But why would... not believing in a religion, make me a fanatic
it's like, the opposite
i just don't care

@user400654 By visiting 100 consecutive days?
@user400654 That's called Buddhist :p

Well I'm sitting on the Agnostic fence, but if I was religious I would probably lean towards Buddhism. I'm exploring other avenues of 'spiritualy' like meditation / no mind as we discussed yesterday.

i mean, that's not true actually

I've been too busy chatting or studying to pursuit @Rob's mindfulness

i just don't care... as long as you're not imposing on me
:p

@DavidPostill ugggggggggggggh

that's where it gets muddy

I don't deny that it has its merits. Maybe even as sort of a spiritual placebo

@user400654 Ha. Apatheism (/ˌæpəˈθiːɪzəm/; a portmanteau of apathy and theism) is the attitude of apathy towards the existence or non-existence of God(s).
