@djsmiley2kTMW this is mostly 1
contagiousness is ... not actually very bad
Part of the issue is, well, panic.

There's a girl playing "Titanium" on loop with an angry look on her face in the back of this bus. I get the feeling someone's in trouble.

If she switches to Sarah's Sweet Surrender that's your stop.

@Mithical I'm fond of the within temptation cover of that.

@Shadow If you could please close meta.stackexchange.com/questions/321160/… as a duplicate of meta.stackexchange.com/questions/250081/…? I used my close vote to test out the behavior on this question and to answer stating that it had been implemented, but then I realized that it was the SOUP user script
The author of SOUP doesn't implement any fixes into the script unless there is already an existing meta post asking for a general fix - the latter is the original post that resulted in a fix being added into that script.

@JourneymanGeek Wow, Within Temptation. Long time since I heard that name.
I see I was completely unaware of three new albums.

This is the type of question that really baffles me: stackoverflow.com/questions/60447874/…
takes 5 seconds to try it out and it took ~50 minutes to have someone say yes or no :/

now you know why I rarely ask questions on SO
I type my problem into google in 2-3 different formulations and 99% of the time there's a Q/A addressing exactly what I want. Even if not and I have to go keyword chaining, I'm still at the solution in under 20 minutes most of the time
When you then spend the extra 2-5 minutes understanding the solution before applying it, nobody will be any the wiser that you're just doing a mildly advanced form of google-fu whenever something's hard :D

Yes but what I'm describing is a situation where you don't need Google to know. You just need to not be afraid that when you do an experiment your computer is going to go up in flames.

eh, if you're working with a company setup environment, trying it out might not yield the default behavior
and if you're thrown into the deep end on an existing project, nor have you the knowledge to find it out.

Yes it will. It may fail because the network may block traffic, but you'll have your answer nonetheless.
Now I'm left with a moral choice to make. Do I not vote or do I upvote that question. Because I have to reason towards the programmer of today... the next person who refuses to do a simple short experiment and googles it might find that question and get their answer.

10:10 AM
maybe you tried it out and it yielded the default behavior, but you'Re unsure if that's the default or a config change your environment has
and you're following a guide or other answer that says sticking the default behavior is important. I can imagine scenarios in which it would be plausible to have this question, just not to ask it.

10:24 AM
Absolutely not relevant for Maven. But if we generalise it towards all tools of any level of complexity... sure. For other tools a question like this can be necessary.

fair enough

Thank you for being my rubber duck though, I needed a little mental gymnastics to not react with my gut to it ;)

Hi all

Hi you

Any Excel wizzards in the house perhaps?

rene is busy posing in front of the sun

1:13 PM
I pretty much try to know as little about Excel as possible.

Your right with that
But its taking for ever
And have about a dozen of similar workbooks

1:39 PM
Yeah... I think you're in the territory of using the wrong tool for the job there ;) Databases are wonderful things.

1:49 PM
@Gimby youre most likely right. But its the only tool I got at the moment. IT isn't really forthcoming with new tools.

You don't have Access? I will have to go to Church later to confess for even saying that...

@M.A.R. I'm still in Dutch land, no sun here, as a matter of fact, some light snow is predicted

Only in the North of the country I think, the rest will just have the bloody endless rain. I saw this bright yellow ball in the sky this morning. It was... magic.

Is the latest edit (by Mari-Lou) weird or is that just my perception? meta.stackexchange.com/posts/344183/revisions

5:14 PM
@canon Why not both.
Some fixes are quite valid.
Wait, they're all valid.

"that is a joke" --> "I'm only kidding" is a valid edit?

""just"" comes off as sarcastic. "just" doesn't.
@canon The latter is less provocative and more natural
The former isn't wrong, but the fix is an improvement

I disagree. I take issue with that brand of meddling in another user's narrative voice. If GhostCat's fine with that, it is what is. Personally, I'd roll back that kind of change immediately if it was applied to my post.

Shrug OK, but other edits are definitely grammatical improvements.

"large" versus "big", huh?

5:20 PM
"a" large

versus "a big"

"minor"

@canon Nope, take a look.

Grammatical fixes could have been applied without meddling.
@M.A.R. I'm saying, the edit for that phrase could have simply changed "big" to "a big" rather than "big" to "a large."

K, I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. IMO the edit is perfectly fine
@canon Her version is slightly more formal, and formal is more appropriate here
The edit gives the post a more professional feel.

5:23 PM
gross

Not professional bad, professional normal
Some nitpicks hate quotative like, for example.
And it has a very informal sound to it
P.S. six revisions or seven, what big a difference does it make?

Reinforcing the cavalier attitude some editors have toward adjusting another user's voice...

Well, that argument is not flawless
As much as stylistic edits go, you're definitely right, but correcting some grammar mishaps, along with two edits that make the post "lose" the author's voice, if you will, especially on a response in a thread that's inherently supposed to be devoid of personal touches, doesn't really strike me as weird

"[...] in a thread that's inherently supposed to be devoid of personal touches [...]" citation needed
Besides, your voice is inherently personal.

In fact, we've probably already debated it too much. You can go ahead and revert some of the changes you thought shouldn't have been made, but the edit is definitely an improvement, overall.

5:30 PM
alrighty

@canon well, I'm not a workplacey guy of course, but this is the new Q/A boss gathering feedback. It's not supposed to convey other than what it's exactly supposed to convey
It should have the atmosphere of a performance review or an interview, except less tense

Quick question: is it OK to post a FAQ proposal question without posting an answer to go along with it?

Probably a bad idea.

I did this with my old account six years ago. While I didn't receive any downvotes, there was one user who attempted to remove the FAQ proposal tag because there wasn't an answer, but a then-SO mod (who had mod privileges on this site at the time) added it back.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Don't tag it like that when posting it, only after the answer is there.

@M.A.R. If I don't do that, people may vote to close my question as needing more focus, as it asks a whole bunch of questions instead of just one question.

You can type a comment and announce your intentions
Doesn't work too well, there's still a chance they'd do it

Comments don't show in the CV queue by default

Will this answer be coming from you, or someone else?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog A footnote then

@M.A.R. If I'd like the answer to come from someone else

7:13 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog are you sure that other person is ready/willing to do it?

I hope someone reading it is so
Anyway...

@Shadow If you could please close https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/321160/highlight-close-x-when-a-close-vote-is-already-raised as a duplicate of https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/250081/make-it-more-clear-on-the-close-button-if-ive-voted-to-close-a-question? Oof, well, it's probably far-fetched

The author of SOUP doesn't implement any fixes into the script unless there is already an existing meta post asking for a general fix - the latter is the original post that resulted in a fix being added into that script.

I've wanted to do that thrice. Without previous notice, all three times almost failed until I did it myself

Hi. What's this room about?

> General friendly chit-chat; general discussions about MSE or the wider network
:)
This is the main chatroom for Meta.SE.

We're happy throughout the week, except for one-hour on Friday when we're forced to be happy.

Yes, I remember I posted questions on this site some years ago. I guess 'meta' is a site about a site.

@cpx Yup. In this case this is a meta site for the entire stack exchange network of sites.

This room seems to be mother of all chat rooms.

Well if it is, mommy is sleeping now ;-) Friday this room gets pretty quiet.

I might enjoy staying here. Sometimes I talk less and listen more.
