Stuff wears off really quickly on me, isn't fun :/

What did they do to your teeth? @Mith

@djsmiley2kindarkness *eyeroll*
@ShadowTheBurningWizard fillings

welp ,there's lots wrong, so i've got the funky superhero backstory too :D

@Mithical you mean סתימות? How many?
@djsmiley2kindarkness do share! ;)

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Do you mean the time they straightened the one that came out at a right angle to what it should have by removing the tooth next to it, then putting in braces? Or the time I chipped a tooth? Or the filling I got about a year ago?

nearly died as a baby, etc etc, pyloric stenosis treatment left my pyloric valve so open that had extremely bad GERD, which ended up eroding my wisdom teeth

@Mithrandir24601 oh lol.... looks like anyone got something done with their teeth..... :P
@djsmiley2kindarkness oh wow

Oh, or virtually all the times they had to remove my baby teeth because they wouldn't come out by themselves (I think my roots are really big or something :P )

12:03 PM
Also caused Barretts Esophagus.

@ShadowTheBurningWizard I have no idea how many, this was the first of a few sessions, apparently

I think I was pulled out as a baby, it left a nasty birthmark...
My mom told me once, but I kind of forgot the full story. :(

@Mithrandir24601 heh i recall a vegan telling me her daughter had her baby teeth at 21 due to her diet
xD

@ShadowTheBurningWizard It's fine now, my flatmate's a dentist and he has said they look decent :)

well nearly died from malnutrition due to pyloric stenosis

@djsmiley2kindarkness I probably would... But they had to put in the braces at some point :P

@VerNicksaysReinstateMonica No such command 'meh'.

12:05 PM
@terdon Also, people living near the Arctic circle, like the Inuit people, didn't have alcohol. The collision of distilled alcohol with Australian Aboriginal cultures & Arctic cultures has not been pretty

Oh yes, distilled spirits is a different story.

@Mithical oh.... sorry to hear.... all covered in the health insurance, I hope? Those things can get expansive... :(
@djsmiley so we can conclude it's a miracle you're alive? ;)

12:54 PM
@ShadowTheMiracleWizard

@djsmiley2kindarkness sure :)

Aha! Hot soup and noodles seems to have restored feeling to my mouth. Whee.
@ShadowTheBurningWizard partly

@ShadowTheBurningWizard please, could you bring the history book records? I think this will be a day to remember. Future generations should have a way to remember this event.

@Mithical :(
@Hitodama ?
@Hitodama so late..... ;)

1:22 PM
@Hitodama I missed that one. Welcome back!

1:35 PM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard two days ago I wasn't here... but since someone had to star that message.... the parrot will be scolded even if it is late.

@Hitodama well, fair enough... still don't get the message before, why history book record?
You mean parrot was more uncouth than me?

@ShadowTheBurningWizard exactly

haha
Well I'm innocent! :D
or... you just missed some of my messages....

And I'm really lucky you don't have Twitter account...... :-D

Hi everyone, I read about significant changes planned for meta.stackexchange, so it will not be used anymore for feedback and feature requests. Does anyone know about it? Couldn't find any meta thread about it

1:49 PM
@BenCarp it's all just speculation yet
We don't really know what will happen, but one thing is for sure, major changes will take place.,
Donna Choi on December 11, 2019

👋Hello! I’m Donna, the Community Design Lead at Stack Overflow.

Welcome to CHAPTER #1 of The Loop, a new blog series from the Stack Overflow Community team. This post is a deep-dive into our research approach: what it used to be, what it is now, and how it continues to evolve.

Learn more about The Loop in CHAPTER #0 (yes, our chapters are zero-based).

If you work on a product that’s ever benefited from research – whether that’s talking directly to users, analyzing experiment data, or any number of other research methods – you know how indispensable these inputs are for making the right decisions.  …

@BenCarp There were posts, but they didn't really shed any light on what's supposed to be happening, just that people were very unhappy with the idea....

> Meta feedback. We monitor Meta for bug reports and small usability/copy issues after shipping changes to the site. Note that this may change based on what the next iteration of Meta looks like, as mentioned in the previous chapter of The Loop.
That's the latest info ^

@BenCarp So right now, it's ignored
in the future? It's ignored.
Notice the capital 'I'
And the full stop '.'.

I don't actually know. It may well be that Meta still exists, and people can still request features... but with an expectation that you can't push the priority of those requests.

I also get a hint of 'meta people know really well what power users want, but we also want to know what those people that aren't those want, so when we're working on something we're not going to get feedback about that on meta (only?)'.

Lastly... well, I suck at keeping secrets so if anything major were to happen to this site they'd either have to not tell me in advance or tell everyone ;)

@ShadowTheBurningWizard supposedly there's supposed to be a "proper" bug tracking system to replace that role of meta.

1:58 PM
I just hope, how shall I put it... dedicated community members who contributed to SOF expressed criticism on meta. I hope the intention is not to avoid criticism.

@BenCarp I get the feeling its messy :D

Probably not, though if with all those changes Meta ends up to be a place where only that kind of stuff happens... well then we have a bit of trouble justifying a need for a Meta ;)

There's a lot of folks invested in meta, both within and without the company
but there's also folks who 'don't get it'

@JourneymanGeek, what do you mean by "don't get it"?

@BenCarp - ooh, that's complicated.
Take your pick
- Its a insider's club
- its hostile
- its a place solely for ranting
- WHAT IS THIS THING AND HOW DO I TURN IT ON?
Not all inaccurate - but not all of what meta is.

2:03 PM
I see

And there's a ton of spending against accumilated goodwill and community 'debt' that makes things trickier.

Interestingly enough, all of this points can be made in the opposite direction as well

@BenCarp it is, no doubt there. The way to reach a place where people can't criticize SE and/or SE actions isn't clear that's all.

@JohnDvorak it can
@ShadowTheBurningWizard the critique moves elsewhere
Twitter, Dev, the other thing

Blog? Doesn't count.

2:03 PM
and gets more hostile

Comments there are white listed

@ShadowTheBurningWizard the internet is a big place

But complaining on Twitter won't make anyone see it.
2

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Discord.

2:04 PM
in before "why didn't my blog comment get approved? It was polite!"

@ShadowTheBurningWizard unless you're someone famous, or it gets picked up by somewhere famous.

I had a group of IPS people there some day aaand we did a lot of complaining.

@JourneymanGeek still, most current meta folk won't be there to see any of it.

@ShadowTheBurningWizard maybe not

complaining is easy

2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek,
>ton of spending against accumilated goodwill and community 'debt'
Can you elaborate?

@BenCarp well - I probably speak of the smaller sites
but we've always been second fiddle to SO - and things got pretty bad. They got better. We're kinda at the point where a few sites-communities are debating moving to alternatives.

@Ben but why you ask, if I may ask? You don't seem active on meta yourself. :)

@ShadowTheBurningWizard insider's club :D

@BenCarp the thing with this crisis is a lot of folks who're the 'core' of their communties, even SO kinda lost faith in SO inc
With a lot of previous issues - say with the layoffs and other things like that, there was an idea stuff could get better

2:09 PM
True ^

The most we have is "lets try to maintain the status quo, and keep an eye on our own sites"
For me, that includes meta, which is/has been challenging :D

Is
@Ben in case you missed it, you can reply to specific chat message by hovering it and clicking the arrow to the right, next to the star. This way it's easier to see context.
2

@ShadowTheBurningWizard something I am terrible at after a decade of using this chat :D

@JourneymanGeek you getting better! :D

@ShadowTheBurningWizard, Well, I just started answering questions a year ago, and during November I was trying to understand the decision to change reputation for questions to 10. I noticed there is a lot of criticism, and thought some of it makes sense. Now I read in their email about the decision to move feedback from meta. It seems selfish, becuase they are ignoring people who contributed to SOF.

2:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek then again it's no worse than your apostrophes ;)

@BenCarp well - there was a lot of politics over that
there was a spirited discussion in the moderator team that shaped the official announcement

@BenCarp oh... yep that's also true. They'll still get feedback, but in a different way.

But some early drafts were leaked
@BenCarp they want to
I doubt it will work as well as they want to

spirited, as in the corp was ghosting you the whole time?

@Mithical he can't control the missing apostrophes

2:15 PM
@JohnDvorak actually

Or more accurate much harder to control

the final version did take into account moderator feedback
and on its own would have actually probably gone better
Fundamentally, while folks are attached to rep, the numbers are fairly arbitrary :D

2:39 PM
Thanks

wait a moment
did someone just explain something in chat
and no ones exploded in an argument or WWIII about it?
I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS ARURRGGGH.
there we go, status quo restored.

@djsmiley2kindarkness you do realise that's a core competancy of mine :D

2:56 PM
Explainer Extraordinaire?

So, Non-Dutch people... what does this warn against? :P

@Tinkeringbell overzealous chicken?

Almost ;)

If worst is sausage, "glad" can be... milk... so it's "Milk ahead"? :D

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Veeery twisted indeed :P

haha now I have to work hard to restore @Hit's faith in my uncouthness. :D

@ShadowTheBurningWizard if you are jealous and want a free scolding too.... you just have to ask, you know.

3:05 PM
@JAD slippery rooster? Must be horrible for the poor thing.... ;)
@Hitodama nah that would be pathetic....
I'll show the parrot who has bigger... beak! :D

Marcela Torres on January 08, 2020

Mexico and Latin America’s tech sector is growing rapidly, and the current market is demanding more experienced talent. But many startups in Mexico and in Latin America are failing to meet their tech goals as there’s not enough talent to build it.

HolaCode, which I founded two years ago, is focused on educating new coders in this region, and then supporting them through the early stages of their career. As we take on this challenge, we are also keeping a strong focus on diversity and ensuring that no communities from this fast growing market are left behind.   …

Let's play "SO blog title, or dystopian sci-fi movie elevator pitch". You've just lost.
5

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Bigger, or more foul? :P

SE getting ready for Trump conquest of Mexico, declaring all its population US citizens?
@Tinkeringbell sharper!

@JohnDvorak Heh, so they're draining coders of their powers over there? That sounds more like any random coding job than a dystopian sci-fi movie!

3:10 PM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Happy... er....

@Feeds this is weird... You can clearly understand what they were trying to say, yet the title for some reason just fell so wrong.

3:48 PM
Hey everyone, does anyone know of a list with (all) reasons that cause a comment to be auto-deleted when flagged? Or is it only the comments that start with "Thanks"?

@Luuklag I think the entire list is sekrit... to avoid getting THNX and having to add that to the list as well ;)
So it's probably 'learn by experience'.

@Tinkeringbell fair point

meta.stackexchange.com/a/238837/369802 < list of some expected cases...

@Tinkeringbell thanks

no problem!

3:58 PM
Well time to head home after a very unproductive day

@Luuklag If this can be of some consolation, not very productive here either.
At least I learned that it is not worth to try to have dynamic component templates in an Angular Element based SPFX web part.

I made a list based of a different list?
yay tracebacks from may last year, that need 'fixing'. I think I can knock out half the list based on 'I want recent logs and see if this is still happening' and 'These things don't even exist anymore'.

@rene Do I have to find a ruler so I can smack your fingers for writing comments instead of answers?
5

Sure, if you think that helps ....

:D

4:14 PM
Any particular comment that set you off?
I don't know what proselytize means and I'm too lazy to look it up.

@rene Think Jehova's witnesses ;)
Basically just preaching for a certain course of action/belief

Okay

Rob
When I flagged that comment yesterday (for "F") it Instaburninated™
@Tinkeringbell So it still works.

@Rob Yeah but it doesn't give a traceback anymore so the traceback doesn't need fixing :P

Rob
K

4:38 PM
@Catija Here you go:

0
Q: Is it against the rules to proselytize your favorite things instead of answering the question?

Nathan HawksSo I'm basically at the boiling point with Microsoft's Cult of Typescript. When I ask a question in Javascript and someone uses the Answers or Comments to deride me for not using Typescript, can I report that message as a site rule violation?

You did ask for a ruler, didn't you?

@Rubiksmoose ^ this user is being mighty aggressive in the comments. I'm not sure what their beef is.

@Rubiksmoose Is this Typescript thing the new jquery?

@terdon XD I wouldn't know.

4:48 PM
@terdon :/ You could have at least gone with Catherine the Great.
Wheee! I got to use my comment only lock finally.

@Catija What can I say. I've been living in the UK the past two years.

:D

@Catija Yikes. It's like a hornet's nest in there.

Rob
@Catija It works too well. I VTC'd duplicate and it ate my automatic-comment.
I suggested this and would have edited to add this.

5:05 PM
@Rob Oooh. Interesting. Thanks.

@terdon it's a superset of JavaScript, allowing for strong typing (among other things), and can be transpiled to plain JavaScript. jQuery is (mainly) a DOM manipulation utility. But yes, people jump into questions and foist their TypeScript/jQuery solutions upon OPs all the time.

Rob
It's hard to say if it a bug or by-design. Should we know, or should we have silence ...

I have a problem with people throwing libraries or unmentioned tech at an OP who doesn't seem to understand the basic JavaScript. I'm sure I've railed against it in comments.

@Rob I'll... talk to Adam about that.

Rob
✔️

5:09 PM
@Rob That said, I don't think your dupe is valid.
@Rob You want to write up a bug report for it? I'm going to guess that it includes closing with an "other" reason, too...

Rob
@Catija The duped link is new, the one I was going to add by editing has 12 answers. --- If the OP's question is really are there circumstances under which we can be rude or insulting ... it's still a duplicate.
Yes, please.

The question seems to be the perennial "I asked a question about ___ and people are telling me to use jquery instead..."
Being told "use jquery" isn't actually answering the question unless it's completely impossible in the language you are using and only possible in jquery.

Rob
Perhaps all automatically generated comments should be allowed, alone the the signer being able to edit. Maybe if it's locked a message that abuse of VTC to post comments may have serious consequences, etc.

Not sure we'll go that far unless it becomes a problem... most people won't even think of it as a work-around.
I wonder if the mod "moved to chat" comment would still post... it should... since mods are exempt...
Hmmm... I guess we'd also need to consider the recommend deletion auto comments, too.

Rob
@Catija That's a "frame challenge" to tell someone "no way!, don't do that, it's only OK to do this instead". --- Such answers run the risk of NAA Flag, downvotes, or tons of upvotes.

5:17 PM
I suppose just making them non-editable would be an option.

Rob
Editing is sometimes needed, and the Community does have the option to flag for standard or mod-message reasons.

Sure. I agree. In most cases, people don't think about editing the auto comments... I'd guess most people don't even realize they are editable.

Rob
You are writing it up, and the Dev is writing the code ... Whatever you two think is best. If there's a problem we'll file a Feature Request. ;)
@Catija Many people, even > 20K rep, don't realize that it's an automatically generated comment; and not inviting a reply. There was a Meta filed about the new wording encouraging a discussion in the comments.

Yeah.

Rob
Sometimes it good to edit to specify a specific answer in the duplicate question or offer a second example when the question asks two things.

5:28 PM
There's some other work being done on closing and I think a lot of the concerns may be addressed there. I'm not up to date on the planning and it's always changing so I don't have much to talk to there.

Rob
Understood.

Hmmm... can you upvote comments when the comments are locked? I'm guessing not...

@Catija I can...
Don't know about the rest here ;)

Have an example on hand for testing?

The question here is improved and answered, the comments are done and gone. Let's move on. Thanks. — Catija ♦ 45 mins ago

5:33 PM
Nope.

@Catija Nope
I get fooled by that a lot.

Rob
@Catija This took a few minutes to find ... I had a comment here but it was deleted (while the person whom I replied to kept their comment). It linked to Shog9's answer about the status of auto comments.

@Tinkeringbell You don't count. :P
<3
Thanks for testing, @Mithical and @Rubiksmoose :D

@Catija 1... 2... uhhh... 5?

@Rob I have seen people report healthier interactions with OPs... they respond more positively to the open question than the assertion.
@Tinkeringbell :sigh: :P
YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EMOJI!!!!

5:40 PM
Hahaha
That's another way to interpret that :P It's actually more of a standard reply here to the Dutch 'you don't count', to start counting incorrectly ;)

... are they still "emoji" if they're not... whatever they are.

No clue, I guess so?

@Tinkeringbell Haha. That's cute. I think I've heard of that in English, too. "I do count! I counted my toes this morning... there's 11, like usual."

@Tinkeringbell I'll do that too, but like the Count from Sesame Street. Vun... two... four!

@Mithical Isn't that how everyone counts normally?

5:43 PM
No, it's how moms count when they're irritated and hurrying you up :P

As long as you end with a hearty laugh, we're all good.

Rob
@Catija The tone (if that's what you refer to) is that they've had a long discussion with one of the moderators ,(mostly JG) with the occasional interjection by myself - that out of the 10M users I don't need him to ping me a couple of times a day to discuss my reviews, answers, etc.

Hmmm? More like... with the "Possible duplicate" text, it came off kinda harsh, so people were assuming it was a done deal... but with the "does this answer your question" text, people see it as an honest query and consider it... dunno. anecdotal, regardless.

Rob
The way I recall the partly deleted conversation is that I chose "other" as a close reason, the auto comment started with the standard "I'm voting to close this because ...", that got 3 upvotes (so, four of us), and the 3rd party responded to the auto comment (pinging me). I replied with information about auto comments (including a result proving that they knew about them already) and that 2nd reply was deleted.
As long as they want for nothing else this month it's water under the bridge.

6:24 PM
Welp they've just closed off the roads in and out of my town because of floods.

Oof, that's not good

Yeah, especially since it's not really supposed to stop raining until the end of the week.

6:39 PM
That's exactly what the site told me to do!!!! quote: Your post has been associated with a similar question. If this question doesn’t resolve your question, ask a new one. Closed 1 hour ago by Glorfindel feature-request . — DrCord 13 mins ago
That's some valid point. We should encourage editing over deletion in the message.

@DrCord Honestly, that is a flaw with post notices that needs to be fixed IMO. I've had multiple people be confused about it. In reality, editing should almost always be your first step when dealing with a potential duplicate, and very rarely is asking a new question warranted. — Rubiksmoose 2 mins ago
@πάνταῥεῖ Definitely.
The only time I can think of that asking a new question in response to a duplicate closure is warranted is if things get super mangled and confused and starting over is basically the only good way to clear things up.

@Rubiksmoose That section in the notice to delete and ask a new question should probably completely removed.

@πάνταῥεῖ Agree completely. IIRC it was brought up multiple times in response to the new post notices.

Also focussing on answers (rather than the existign questions) could be emphasized more.
28
A: Perception - "Does this answer your question?" reads as sarcastic or 'snarky', not 'friendly'

πάντα ῥεῖI can't spot any unfriendliness or sarcasm in that duplicate notice. It's just a clear question for the OP, and an invitation to read up the answers in the link, and confirm or not. ... but it was at least accurate Many users complained about the formerly used Possible duplicate of ... that...

@πάνταῥεῖ I might disagree there. I think dupe work best (on RPG at least) when they focus on the question itself. We have a policy where the answer doesn't matter when determining dupes.

6:52 PM
@Rubiksmoose "We have a policy where the answer doesn't matter when determining dupes." Isn't that for exact same questions?

@πάνταῥεῖ Yeah, our duplicate policy is that we only close something as a dupe if the questions are more or less identical (or subsets).
We don't link questions together just because their answers are the same.

@Rubiksmoose Well, I doubt so. Do you have a reference?

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm confused as to what you are doubting here (are you doubting my own memory of the site I moderate's policy?), but sure we have a reference.
12
Q: If an answer to question A can be found in question B, should we close A as duplicate of B?

enkryptorRelated: Non-duplicate question with answer in another question Should/can we change the Duplicate notification? Situation — there are two different questions Aq and Bq. Question Aq has a specific answer Aa. Question Bq has a good detailed answer, which includes points Aa, Ba and Ca. Should ...

7:27 PM
yeah it's not done that way on SO usually. there are thousands of ways you could ask a given question that can be answered by a single answer.

Sure. I can definitely see that.
It's one of those areas where each site has to kind of work out what works best for them I think.
Like MSE itself having a very loose definition of duplicate.

@Rubiksmoose Not really.

@πάνταῥεῖ Well compared to RPG I should say. Maybe not for SO, I don't frequent there.
And to be clear I'm not even saying it is wrong that it's done that way, just different (from RPG).

@Rubiksmoose Also for SE. Questions, especially FR's are likely to have a broader coverage.
@Rubiksmoose Yes, that might be different.

@πάνταῥεῖ Yup. It makes sense to do it that way.

7:40 PM
it's so hard not to leave a "Have you considered using jquery?" comment on that question

@user400654 No, it's not... menacing look

@djsmiley2kindarkness Crocheting, it's crocheting. Not Knitting or sewing.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Not any more :)
And yeah, was crocheting. :D

@ShadowTheBurningWizard That train of thought leads to some pretty terrifying mental images.

I wonder what happens to the bounty now.

@MulliganᛜReinstatingMonica Snore :-P

Maybe it will be auto-awareded to the one who gave a "harsh but fair critique"

IIRC, it's only auto-awarded to answers posted after the bounty was started (and are 2+).

9:43 PM
@Feeds Shut up.

@Mithical hmmm. As if bounty edge cases weren't already confusing enough.

Rob
@Catija Here is an example in favor of editing: the duplicate referred to has a lot of answers, by being able to point out the specific answer (and it's status-review tag) people can see that it is an exact duplicate and has been acknowledged; thus eliminating the need for follow-up comments or
invitation to reply to auto generated comments.

Q: Bounty cannot be awarded on a locked answer

ThiefMasterI wanted to award a bounty of 50 rep to https://stackoverflow.com/a/1732454/298479 because it's a great answer. However, while I could start the bounty I was not able to award it since that answer is locked. It would be great if a moderator could either award the bounty to that answer manually (...

@Catija Please don't do that. Here on Meta, I often vote to close questions already answered in FAQs as dupes (per longstanding policy), but since FAQs often have many sections that users have to sift through to get to their answer, I often edit the comment to explain which section it's answered in. There are many valid uses of editing automatic comments.
In fact, editing the automatic comment exempts it from deletion, so the potential for it to automatically disappear upon closure is nonexistent.
@πάνταῥεῖ It's automatic; if you want the feed to be disabled, please develop consensus for it and ask an RO.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I suspect they are well-aware that the feed it automatic lol

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I mean... how many comment locked questions have you needed to duplicate vote?
