That's an original trip though. Quite interesting.

I remember some kind of horror 'tomato soup' that was basically those cardboard packages of pureed tomato, a lot of beans... and rice to make it 'fill you up'.

Load of leftovers because it wasn't really edible, so the next day it spent the entire day on the campfire to boil away as much water as possible... and then it suddenly was 'tomato sauce' to go with pasta.

There are several pathways that essentially neutralize various kinds of substances in the body. Which pathway is used depends on the shape and kind of molecule. Grapefruit juice blocks one of these pathways, so any drug that is neutralized by it will stay longer in your blood.

The latter so-named because Hemingway was diabetic and thus had a drink made for him without the normal sugar that gets added to a daiquiri. Instead they substitute grapefruit juice (aslo less sugar than the normal lime) and maraschino liqueur to get at least a bit of sweetness. It's pretty sour though. Tasty if you like sour things.

This also explains some adverse drug interactions. If one pathway is busy with a particular drug, adding a second drug that is neutralized in the same pathway can be quite dangerous

In the U.S., they're techincally illegal nationwide by a federal law, but the government turns a blind eye to most of it. Some states have passed overriding laws; they're technically preempted by the federal law, but again...

Importing them is bad, though, as everything has to pass through federal customs, and it will be caught.

It's double price, and not as strong as black market; so sales have been to hipsters (want to be cool, but don't know the people).

@Tinkeringbell Well, drugs undergo four processes in the body: They get absorbed, they're distributed, they're then metabolized and finally excreted. The third part means different enzymes in different parts of the body, especially the liver (this being one of its major roles) modify the drug to different, "more manageable" things.

Most drug interactions that doctors warn the patients about affect the third part. The unwanted substance in blood either activates or deactivates these modifying, degrading enzymes, and either enough drug doesn't remain in blood to do its job, or it accumulates, cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer

Grapefruit juice does the latter to an important one of these enzymes. So drugs accumulate in the body, even though the prescribed dosage predicted they'd be metabolized by then. It becomes the equivalent of overdosing.

One of my immunosuppressor drugs is like that.

The primary enzyme that metabolizes ethanol is from the same family (similar structure and/or function) but is different.

I looked around but found nothing. If it was indeed the case that grapefruit affects ethanol absorption or metabolism, there would have been a myriad of warnings around.

Anyway, the bad thing about ethanol is mostly itself. A lot of these factors depend on the person, but it's alcohol usage over time that would cause the most trouble and the most damage to tissues in the body AFAIK.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog eh... it's extremely debatable if the feds can actually govern intrastate commerce but the supreme court ruled ages ago they can. There are other questions about if the feds can legally ban something anyway.

Most of the chronic alcohol effects that I know much of the mechanism for are in fact mediated by the metabolites, and not ethanol itself, which is partly why the impacts are so dose-dependent (the liver does a really good job of managing not just the ethanol but also the metabolites at low daily intake; it does a much worse job at high intake).

A couple exceptions where ethanol itself is most important are in the acute toxicity (e.g., respiratory and reflex suppression) and acute withdrawal case (e.g., delirium tremens and seizures)
