@Gimby XD
@Magisch There are, but living with a cheapskate can be no fun ;)
lol
(My parents insisted, and still low key insist, I have the same amount of spending money as I did when I was in school :D)
@Tinkeringbell is self-identified cheapskate
thank god for no roommates
Frugality is a fantastic trait, except when it would result in a hotel or B&B where you have a shared bathroom because that's 200 euros cheaper or you have to walk 30 minutes to get to public transportation. Hell - no.
@Gimby That's what they call floating licenses :D
@Gimby back in middle school the school organized a skiing trip for all students
being a school they naturally cheaped out hard and we had to share 1 bathroom for every 12 people. And then we had a collective bout of food poisoning
14:08
yikes
I'm pretty sure part of why I don't remember most of that week is because my mind has consciously erased it as a measure to protect my sanity
I do like the idea of e.g. repairing stuff and not buying new ones, buying second hand stuff, or indeed not always buying the most expensive stuff when there's cheaper stuff just as good...

But I also like having my hotel room close to the public transport and with a bathtub :P
at some point, one bathroom's toilet clogged
and that was pure apocalypse
Yeah the magical school trips. I remember one where we were served a rather mysterious button mushroom soup. Since then I've never had or created a soup which tasted anything like it. Not even from a can.
iirc the school later sued the BNB we were staying at
14:10
I'm not going to say people had food poisoning... but a lot of people did not feel too well that night.
some people had to go to the hospital, and most of us had one or two days out of a week and a half to actually ski and were violently ill with food poisoning for the rest
My worst (best?) memory is of a trip to a forest to build a replica of a prehistoric house using replicas of prehistoric tools. We were promised a lot of hard work and good food.

Nr 1. was definitely there, nr. 2... not so much :P
@Gimby magic button mushroom soup?
That's an original trip though. Quite interesting.
14:13
I remember some kind of horror 'tomato soup' that was basically those cardboard packages of pureed tomato, a lot of beans... and rice to make it 'fill you up'.
@Tinkeringbell you can make that kinda edible if you cheat :D
@Gimby ouch. I don't remember the food in the school trips at all, guess it's a good thing? lol
Load of leftovers because it wasn't really edible, so the next day it spent the entire day on the campfire to boil away as much water as possible... and then it suddenly was 'tomato sauce' to go with pasta.
@Tinkeringbell I'd love building a house with primitive tools though
sounds like lots of fun
@JourneymanGeek Sorry, there wasn't much cheating.
14:14
I got food poisoning only once, from Hummus.
@Tinkeringbell if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying :D
Unless you count getting sausages and snacks each night :P
@Magisch It was!
I got food poisoning from lemon juice once :D
experiment-horsterwold.nl < website of the project
we had an incident from someone's medications not working well with grapefruit juice once
14:15
@JourneymanGeek Wow, that must have been a potent bug
@Gimby water contamination
and not used to the water there.
Heh
Happens to lots of people
actually a lot better now than it was before
14:17
Guess once it happens, the body gets resistant to whatever cause it. No?
@JourneymanGeek Well, my mother in law went there and several people in their party went home with a parasite in the gut. And... that was deemed "not unusual".
@Gimby yeah, we tend to have medicine for that, charcoal tablets, electrolyte sachets....
Can't you just buy mineral water?
.... you couldn't then
14:22
I think grapefruit is a no-no for blood pressure meds
So makes sense it'll mess with meds.
Its also apparently enzymes
@ShadowTheBurningWizard it was somehow specifically grapefruit juice but not other juices with high acidity
hmm.... so something with the fruit itself, probably, not the acid.
14:40
> Grapefruit juice decreases the activity of the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes that are responsible for breaking down many drugs and toxins.
Goes to look if those are used for breaking down alcohol too.
lol
So, who got such a raincoat?
That's not a raincoat... that's a lifejacket (lifebodysuit?)
Possibly convertible to a lifeboat?
@MulliganReinstatingMonica I'm now tempted to make a horrible, horrible joke...
@Tinkeringbell oh, well, can be used as raincoat, surely. :D
14:47
My first two ideas were a wingsuit or some sort of BDSM thing
@Tinkeringbell tempting @Tink to make the joke
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Sure, a very squeaky one :D
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Something with there being room for two :P
14:48
The arms have no mobility in this thing..
It's just a coat/jacket with extra layers and stuff, it's not really big by itself.
@ShadowTheBurningWizard See :P
@JohnDvorak So it's a straightjacket, not a lifejacket. Got it :P
Could be both! Let's say you're carrying prisoners in a seaplane. What do you put them in, so that they can't swim or drown?
This is how we roll :P
(literally, the kid can just roll) lol
14:51
@curious lol he doesn't look very happy....
Wait... yours??
@ShadowTheBurningWizard He was! :)
It's like laying in a cloud lol
Why head is also with a stripe?
We tried to do something like that with first kid, it always failed, so we gave up, letting her just roll.
@ShadowTheBurningWizard The brown thing? Winter hat
14:53
Complete with ears and all, of course
@JohnDvorak Hmmm. Point!
@Rubiksmoose good Google-fu ;)
@curious Michelin baby? :D
Also I'm not sure if it's just me reading into it, but the models they got to wear those things look the most unamused I've ever seen in a fashion context.
14:54
@JourneymanGeek Yup! And I wasn't expecting this reference to work around the globe lol
@ShadowTheBurningWizard looks like someone had fun with punching padding
@Rubiksmoose maybe on purpose
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Reverse image search for the win!
To make it different even more than all the others
@curious Its that or the pilsbury dough boy :D
Also, don't forget, I get more cultural references than most
14:55
@Rubiksmoose sure, I use it a lot myself. :)
Actually, doing it on @curious pic gave "girl" as result. lol
@JourneymanGeek He can kindda crawl in it, and looks like a giant larva :)
@curious well most people my age might be familiar with it from ghost busters :D
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Possibly! I doubt it was overlooked by the photographer/editor/designer.
14:57
@JourneymanGeek I was just thinking yesterday that Ghostbusters seems to transcend generations
For some reason, my 3yo is obsessed with the theme song, probably came from some other kid in daycare
It's a catchy theme song though
and it's all about "When I grow up, I can watch Ghostbusters! And I won't even be scared!"
Most movie theme songs are catchy
I still recall being scared to death in the library scene... :P
@ShadowTheBurningWizard I don't recall ever singing to the theme song of Lethal Weapon, but yelling "GHOST BUSTERS!" - heck yes :)
15:00
lol
Skyfall used to be in my playlist for long time
Rob
Rob
Even Casper the friendly ghost had scary scenes.
15:31
(I think you scared everyone away, Rob)
nah that's Casper
There used to be such a mod
Was mod back in the day...
casperOne and Shog9.... fits.
"Is consensual cannibalism vegan" - I... I... I have to click.
15:46
...
Surprisingly enlightening, there is a certain humor in how seriously these kind of questions are answered on SE.
Looks like SE is going on a resolved bug post spree.
@Rubiksmoose Nick got back from two weeks vacation
@Gimby those too. :-P
hmm... looks like they just cleaned the flags queue. Right? @Journeyman / @Tink
Flags asking to add status tags are usually kept for SE staff.
@ShadowTheBurningWizard actually not from what I can tell
16:01
@ShadowTheBurningWizard gone!
@ShadowTheBurningWizard gone!
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Ha ha :)
the added humor in that question is that you really can do that in the game.
@JNat thanks!
@JNat thanks?
@Gimby yup
@ShadowTheBurningWizard gone
@JourneymanGeek you mean the posts with the newly-added status tags were not flagged? Or there are still flags in the queue?
@JNat thanks!
@ShadowTheBurningWizard fixed!
16:07
@JNat mod powerz! :D
(mortal can't edit after 2 minutes ;))
@ShadowTheBurningWizard gone!
@JNat awesome! JNat's queue now clear
:D
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog gone
@ShadowTheBurningWizard now it's clear ;)

Am I the only one seeing a blue dash behind this users name: aviation.stackexchange.com/users/20799/arnav ?
No repro. I can see it too.
It is not on all users ...
Repro'd. It's something to do with the percentage thing IIRC.
16:50

The two surrounding users have 55% so that's what theirs should indicate, instead of the blue dask - so it's not a JS error not being able to calculate the value, causing the problem.

@rene The problem is that they are not present in the Reputation Leagues database:
@Tinkeringbellwhereas i was working, and chaning things
@Rob huh? And why would that be?
Rob
Rob
18:14
Why are they missing, I don't know; they've been a user for a couple of years. --- What are your findings?
I looked at new users as I thought of the same problem, assuming their 'league' stats could be stale / not executed yet. I couldn't find any new user showing that same issue.
@Rob huh? Rabbit? 🐰
@user400654 you stole @Rob's toilets?
20:05
Well, outdoors history is Earthsciences.SE
@Magisch Yeah, few medications stay in blood for too long because of grapefruit juice

Grape juice CYP inhibitor.
Yeah but I still don't know what it does in combination with alcohol :P

Physics is different, where they are.
Coool... floats away
Ugh really? In the first paragraph? I read that thing at work!
@M.A.R. I need you to translate that medical thing here... alcohol and grape fruit: Good or bad hangover?
Rob
Rob
20:54
It's not poisonous
@Tinkeringbell I'm extremely curious about this as well. I'm kind of an amateur cocktail guy and there a re several well-known grapefruit cocktails.
@Rubiksmoose I bet it's not too bad then ;)
@Rob That is infused though, probably doesn't have all of the same effects of having the actual fruit content in there. Depends on where the enzymes are and how soluble they are I guess?
If it's worse than long island iced teas, I need to stay away from it.
20:57
@Tinkeringbell Depends what you mean by worse ;)
I think a bad long island is going to check most all of the "worse" checkboxes though. And even a good one can only be so good.
worse as in gets you drunk even faster ;)
But tastes like lemonade :P
@Tinkeringbell Oh yeah no. It's hard to beat a long island at that without just doing straight liquor/ shots.
@Tinkeringbell ethanol isn't metabolized by CYP3A4, so it shouldn't be affected unless there are other effects in play
@DisappointedinSE That single sentence makes me feel like I could've googled it and now I'm dumb :/ ;) Thanks for explaining! :)
@Rubiksmoose Ah good :)
If you're curious. Off the top of my head there's the Paloma and Hemingway Daiquiri
21:01
Hmm. Ideas ;)
There are several pathways that essentially neutralize various kinds of substances in the body. Which pathway is used depends on the shape and kind of molecule. Grapefruit juice blocks one of these pathways, so any drug that is neutralized by it will stay longer in your blood.
The latter so-named because Hemingway was diabetic and thus had a drink made for him without the normal sugar that gets added to a daiquiri. Instead they substitute grapefruit juice (aslo less sugar than the normal lime) and maraschino liqueur to get at least a bit of sweetness. It's pretty sour though. Tasty if you like sour things.
@DisappointedinSE I got that far... So I really don't know why I didn't just google which way was for alcohol...
@Rubiksmoose I think I do like sour things... but not too sour ;)
This also explains some adverse drug interactions. If one pathway is busy with a particular drug, adding a second drug that is neutralized in the same pathway can be quite dangerous
21:05
@Tinkeringbell I like sour things too. :) That recipe should be fine. It has simple syrup added so it would be sweeter than other recipes I've seen.
@DisappointedinSE Yay, more science bits ;)
@Rubiksmoose Cool, as soon as I'm through my current alcohol stash, I might get the ingredients for that one :)
Drinking through alcohol stashes is a darned fun exercise :)
As long as done at a moderate pace ;)
If done at the right pace, every form of exercise can be fun :P
@Tinkeringbell hah!
Rob
Rob
It's probably the ICE® and Grapefruit (NSFW), that's where the problem lies.
21:20
> Making people high and happy
Best motto ever, could work for hot air balloons too :)
"With a hint of banana", srsly? I want to try now!
Also.. that link is NSFW, probably.

Too late for my edit, go ahead.
You're welcome! :)

Legal in half of North America, and the Netherlands (where that site is located).
Actually, growing the stuff is illegal and selling it is just 'being tolerated'.
It's more legal in North America
Rob
Rob
Sold by the Government in Canada.
Canada has the right idea...
use it to make money ;)
In the U.S., they're techincally illegal nationwide by a federal law, but the government turns a blind eye to most of it. Some states have passed overriding laws; they're technically preempted by the federal law, but again...
Importing them is bad, though, as everything has to pass through federal customs, and it will be caught.
Rob
Rob
It's double price, and not as strong as black market; so sales have been to hipsters (want to be cool, but don't know the people).
21:28
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ^
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Well, not always. I've had friends get some seeds through. Friends who now grow legally in my state (though not according to the federal government of course).

@Tink @Rubik no, the enzymes involved in metabolizing ethanol are different
Assuming that's the major component of the minor component of these beverages
@M.A.R. I'd hope so!
@Tinkeringbell Well, drugs undergo four processes in the body: They get absorbed, they're distributed, they're then metabolized and finally excreted. The third part means different enzymes in different parts of the body, especially the liver (this being one of its major roles) modify the drug to different, "more manageable" things.
Most drug interactions that doctors warn the patients about affect the third part. The unwanted substance in blood either activates or deactivates these modifying, degrading enzymes, and either enough drug doesn't remain in blood to do its job, or it accumulates, cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer
Grapefruit juice does the latter to an important one of these enzymes. So drugs accumulate in the body, even though the prescribed dosage predicted they'd be metabolized by then. It becomes the equivalent of overdosing.
One of my immunosuppressor drugs is like that.
The primary enzyme that metabolizes ethanol is from the same family (similar structure and/or function) but is different.
I looked around but found nothing. If it was indeed the case that grapefruit affects ethanol absorption or metabolism, there would have been a myriad of warnings around.
Anyway, the bad thing about ethanol is mostly itself. A lot of these factors depend on the person, but it's alcohol usage over time that would cause the most trouble and the most damage to tissues in the body AFAIK.
22:05
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog eh... it's extremely debatable if the feds can actually govern intrastate commerce but the supreme court ruled ages ago they can. There are other questions about if the feds can legally ban something anyway.
23:23
@M.A.R. Most of the chronic alcohol effects that I know much of the mechanism for are in fact mediated by the metabolites, and not ethanol itself, which is partly why the impacts are so dose-dependent (the liver does a really good job of managing not just the ethanol but also the metabolites at low daily intake; it does a much worse job at high intake).
A couple exceptions where ethanol itself is most important are in the acute toxicity (e.g., respiratory and reflex suppression) and acute withdrawal case (e.g., delirium tremens and seizures)
