How "Are there any clones/alternatives for running a Stack Exchange style Q&A site?" made it onto the duplicate list for "Why some online forums look too similar to Stack Exchange Overflow?" can be the outro to 2019 - all the sites they asked about (except askoverflow.ir) are SE sites, and not "clones".
They wanted to know why AskUbuntu looks like the other sites, yet has a different domains name.
> Stack Exchange Overflow

@Rob Done the needful, so to speak :D

We do have MathOverflow, for the multi-page MathJax questions.
MO is a strange beast :D

Arguably "What is PhysicsOverflow" is what they are asking, where SE software was licensed to a third party.

@Mithical Oof. Time to figure out who to blame for my lack of mod swag:
!!/blame
@V2Blast It's Steerpike's fault.
(Does this command always return the same result? :P )
in theory no
In practice. Maybe it really is Steerpike's fault
07:08
lol
I've never used it before
Just saw @ShadowTheBurningWizard use it earlier and it also blamed Steerpike
So I wasn't sure
!!/blame
@V2Blast It's Rob's fault.
There we go. They can share the blame :P

@V2Blast your fault!
!!/blame V2Blast
@ShadowTheBurningWizard It's ThiefMaster's fault.
:(
@Rob I also don't squeeze the toilet paper, I'm very gentle with it. :D
@rene it's a bug in either a userscript or default browser behavior from what I understand, I stand behind my close vote, and it's reopened anyway. :)
@JourneymanGeek dig who?
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Oh, its a particularly earwormy song
@ShadowTheBurningWizard if memory serves, its default behaviour in some specific linux setups
/me looks in
@JourneymanGeek urgh theming
firefox and an older version of gnome had it
08:13
I had that issue in the past but not from SE.
@JourneymanGeek no worm for me
More like.... 'every site' was like that.
you can fix it by mucking around your theme carefully
I don't recall if it was chrome or FF, it was long ago.
Since then gave up.
@JourneymanGeek still... we can't expect SE to test the site on all possible platforms and setups...
08:14
Ended up on some site which forced white background on a login box, but didn't force white text
/me patiently waits for hospital to call
@ShadowTheBurningWizard but eh, might be better to leave that decision to staff
Hospital can't be good unless it's about delivery... (of a baby)
@djs so... why?
Oh.. hey! Welcome back @Hit
You were missed
Sleep Apnoea clinic checkup
@JourneymanGeek of course! I figure they can add status review like they now do with all bugs.
08:16
they just call me once a year, check I'm alright
@djsmiley2kindarkness wow that's nice. Never heard about hospital/doctor calling to patients to check on them.
@ShadowTheBurningWizard and some of them do get fixed
@JourneymanGeek of the patients?
@djsmiley2kindarkness so it means you don't sleep well? Or is it cured by now?
cured via machine basically.
08:33
He is more machine than man... :D
@ShadowTheBurningWizard the bugs. Unless its a vetinary clinic. Then many patients get fixed :D
lol
Well when I imagine the internal bugs list of SE developers, I see this:
Pile of bugs, very few developers to fix them...
@ShadowTheBurningWizard more that there's probably periods where the devs are focused elsewhere
its like one of those movies where you lift the carpet and BUGGGGSSSS
hmm.... @Journeyman you might want to add your voice here.
And better blacklist the tag so people won't keep using it, not knowing it's forbidden and get annoyed when it's removed. No?
I can't blacklist
blacklisting needs staff
08:40
and its funny they tried to sneak in the tag again
....
the hat coming in slightly after the ava almost looks like animation
@Mithical oh didn't know. calling @Shog
been nice knowing you, Sha
If only @Shog was pingable....
:P
But anyway, if we really want to blacklist tag and it's accepted by the site mods, @g3rv4 can do it. No? I'll give you coffee! ;)
I think most of the other mods are on vacation :D
most... lol :)

Can we still talk about his keys?
@djsmiley2kindarkness some say, he never found them
Keys are so 2018
and that they lie, waiting, in the jungles of the phillippines. Watching. Waiting for the time.
I still prefer to turn a key to start a car rather than push a button
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I wind mine up.
keys are so this decade, I prefer a crank handle
09:04
@djsmiley2kindarkness Great, that means it never has to be jump-started
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog until (like me) you have a tag on your keychain which you need to open the gate to the office. I have to either split the keychain or remove the key from the slot (which stops the engine, and after the gate opens I have to insert the key again) #firstworldproblems
@djsmiley2kindarkness pfft. Just fill up the boiler and wait fro the steam to build up
@Glorfindel Audi came up with a pretty nice way to cater to everyone: for those preferring push-button, one can simply insert an adapter into the key hole which tells the car to check for a proximity signal from the key, and pushing that will start it. Those who prefer traditional key start can just remove it.
@djsmiley2kindarkness meh.... soon the car will start itself.
09:08
My next car will definitely be an Audi, but not for that reason :)
@Glorfindel gates are so last decade

o wow @Tinkeringbell how long did that take o_O
Uhhmmm. Didn't set a timer. But I started it October '18, after a few rounds I put it away because I had another blanket I should really finish first. Then I picked it up again in January this year, but I had about a six month break over spring/summer where it was just too hot to finish it (You sit under it while working on it, and that was just not doable).
So... I think if I had time, I could do it in under 18 weeks (the pattern is cut up in 18 parts, one part for each week... but I could do e.g. the first 4 in one weekend so...)
That was last year's blanket.
What are your traditional dinners for new years eve (besides Dinner for One)?
We'll have Raclette tomorrow.
Oliebollen and snert, I guess. Though I usually just get myself a sandwich as I don't really like either of those two.
@Tinkeringbell Can you translate that to English, my Dutch is limited.
@πάνταῥεῖ Fried dough balls with raisins, and split pea soup? :P I don't know if those dishes even have English names...
17:44
@Tinkeringbell I doubt so. Sounds a bit strange (the combination) :D
@πάνταῥεῖ XD Usually my parents eat the pea soup, and my brothers the dough balls.
;D
@Tinker Your crotcheting is great BTW. I already gave you my <3 at twitter.
@πάνταῥεῖ I saw :) Thanks for that ;)

@Tinkeringbell Sure, because time will go by :-)
Rob

You still have to design the pattern and upload it. There is a challenge to doing thread changes and making a seamless dress.
17:59
@Rob Pffff
@Rob Okay... that does sound like it may occupy my mind a bit too :P
@rob and BTW isn't that a knitting machine? Crotchetting is a bit of a different technique.
Rob
Rob
@Tinkeringbell Whole Garment technique:
Rob
Rob
18:24
When you weave in 3D you can control the density of the fabric and control the motion of the material when the woman walks. You can also make patterns that change over the space, have open weaves over another layer, and several dozen thread changes per one seamless garment. It can take months to design, even an hour or two for the machine to make. --- There are business whom own the $1/2M machine, and you can order a one-off (or several identical).
Sounds complicated and expensive. I'll stick with crochet ;)
Rob

It differs from your Treadle Sewing Machine πάντα ῥεῖ.

@Rob I am talking about the differences of knitting vs crotchetting.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Didn't I notice them already?
I just popped in here; didn't read the back transcript
18:58
Hey, quick question, does anyone know how to get the knitting colours userscript to work? I've tried everything I could think of and it's done nothing
What's not working for you?
The user script just isn't changing anything, I think it isn't running
How are you adding it?
First I tried to run it in the console, then using Greasemonkey
I'm on Firefox
Hmm. I'm used to Chrome/Tampermonkey. But that one shows how many scripts are running on each page for me. Does Greasemonkey have similar stuff?
19:01
Uh...I don't know, this is my first time using this sort of thing
And I can't use Chrome on my laptop, it just doesn't work
Ehh. You're going to need someone that uses Firefox I guess... sorry!
Ok, thanks anyway
19:15
@Eleeza use TamperMonkey. GreaseMonkey is borked when they released version 4.
Also just tried Tampermonkey
Still no luck
Maybe I need jQuery installed? the script says jQuery not defined...
The script is running? TamperMonkey shows a 1 in the toolbar?
Yes
But it's not doing anything
@Eleeza strange
I'll try the jQuery thing and see if that's the issue
19:24
hmmmmm
Does M.E. cause random pains around the body
/me hurts, so much right now
@Eleeza have you disabled GreaseMonkey?
tbh if chrome 'just doesn't work' on your laptop, you've got bigger issues
@djsmiley2kindarkness I can't tell from experience but from the stories I heard that seems plausible.
I have something, clearly, for a long time I just put it down to tiredness from my sleep apnea, but I'm not that tired right now, but I am in lots of pain
@djsmiley2kindarkness maybe an Enterprise Admin is trying to be "helpful"
@djsmiley2kindarkness something you had for food maybe?
19:27
then they are likely disabling all java script
@rene hmmm maybe
then they are likely disabling all java script
can lactose intolerance cause random pains?
That is out of my comfort zone. But I had eaten something bad on friday that didn't take that long to develop into all kind of discomforts
hmmm
well this just comes and goes randomly
Health.se doesn't do personal counseling so I guess it is either hope for it get better or go see a doctor if gets worse.
19:40
well i've had it for years
since my teens I think
just sometiems it goes/fades, othertimes it gets worse
right now it's pretty bad
I've never been to a doc about it, because wtf do I tell tehm
"Sometimes I hurt.... in random places, at random times, even if i'm just sat still"
@djsmiley2kindarkness I'd recommend Marihuana :-P
I disabled Greasemonkey and...no effect
@Eleeza weird
My whole laptop just acts weird tbh
I just installed the US from the raw link in FF with GM4 and for me it works
FF 71.0 (64-bit) on Win10
19:52
Aaaand this is what I get for trying to do stuff I have no idea about :'D
@Eleeza Pinging @ArtOfCode, the script's maintainer
Thanks
20:19
@Eleeza how many colors are available with the userscript running?
It's just the same standard colours
Regarding various troubles on SE recently.. Would it be accurate to say that there's a gulf between the needs and desires of the corporation and the needs and desires of the users? Would users benefit from having some kind of constitution and having the owners sign it, too?
@Eleeza Okay... what's the console showing? Any errors?
Nope, console says nothing
@daveloyall 1. Yes. 2. The owners won't sign anything of the like.
They'll adhere to meta.stackexchange.com/legal/terms-of-service, which as a company is understandable.
20:24
@Glorfindel yeah nobody gives somebody else something for free. It's gotta be an exchange. Like, "we'll end the strike if you sign".
@Glorfindel I think if we collaboratively edit a question that has a list of demands.. ya know? So my question becomes.. how many times have we already tried this? ;) I don't really follow MSE much.
@daveloyall point is, there are hardly any observable effects of a strike: meta.stackexchange.com/q/334626/295232
So we can make any demands we want (the most popular one by a wide margin being "Reinstate Monica") but it's not going to fly.
Ah, so my idea is not really novel.
@ArtOfCode the script editor says something like "jQuery is not defined"
@Eleeza Sorry, trying to do too many things at once here. Are you using Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey?
Either one
I can come back later if you want though
20:33
@Eleeza No, not a problem, I'm just very good at getting sidetracked. I'm looking :)
I have a line like this for my TamperMonkey scripts that require jQuery. // @require http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js
jQuery isn't the issue
@ArtOfCode Oh I see, this user script is not authored by Eleeza. It is maintained by you. Ok. :)
@Eleeza Should be fixed. SE added more colors to the editor themselves - there were only 12 colors last year, now there's 25... the script only has 19, though, so you might wanna add some more of your own.
ArtOfCode, did you put that hyphen at the end of your github username recently, on purpose, using the REST API?
20:48
@daveloyall Haha, I've forgotten pretty much most of the Javascript I learned when I was 8
Nope, I've had that ever since they were allowed in usernames natively
Just updated and...the knitting tool won't load when I click to start knitting... console says "syntax error: private fields are not currently supported", I think there's a problem with my browser
@ArtOfCode I see. I think it's not currently allowed. Anyway, neat userscripts, thanks! What does list_browser do?
@daveloyall Almost certainly? Not work.
It was meant to give you prev/next buttons while you're on a question page, having come there from a list of questions, so that you can move through the list.
@Eleeza To be honest, you're probably better off not using it, now that there's more colors available natively.
That knitting script is a pain to do any serious debugging on, because it's literally rewriting the code as it gets executed.
21:04
Yeah, you're right, my computer is problematic anyways. The script is really cool though, seeing what people have done with it :) good work! And thanks anyways for the help

2 hours later…
22:58
@djsmiley2kindarkness Still worth talking to a doctor about it. Then they can try and rule out certain possibilities, and narrow down the list. Plus they might ask you questions that help you identify any patterns you wouldn't have noticed on your own.
