@PM2Ring in some cases, that's an advantage

12:19 AM
speaking of tha tpost
i can't find it anymore
i know there was a separate one on MSO that I haven;t looked for

4 hours later…
4:16 AM
@rene Sooooo...I guess there's another chapter in the solar debacle? Maybe more an addendum.
They're now suing the local power company, saying they're at fault for their lateness.

3 hours later…
7:25 AM
@fbueckert they are shifting blame?

JAD
@Magisch last week I biked to work in a T-shirt :O

@M.A.R. because I'm not extra, maybe intraterrestrial.
@rene of course!! (Googling vreugde vuren)
Well it's @Shree's fault

@ShadowTheBurningWizard the short story is: They almost burned down their own neighbourhood last year and this year they wanted a permit to do it again. That didn't fly.

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard bonfire
basically, a local competition between two coastal communities in The Hague to build has big a bonfire as possible, or at least bigger than the others. Of course this gets pushed to ridiculous limits. Last year they built beyond what was allowed by the fire brigade. One of the fires was so big that it rained embers all over the neighborhood, setting houses and cars on fire.

7:41 AM
@rene oh... think @Tink said something about it, yeah...

JAD
So now they are a lot more strict with permits, and since the communities couldn't guarantee this wouldn't happen again, the permits were denied. Riots ensued.
and ironically, during the riots, parts of the neighborhood were set on fire...

Oh, Tink posted something else.

https://twitter.com/Stefanuzz/status/1040322119777832961?s=09 Not much smoke, let's hope that means not much fire either
@JAD well that's plain silly and criminal, they should be sent to jail. But guess that didn't happen. :(

JAD
Dutch link, but videos and images: nos.nl/artikel/…
@ShadowTheBurningWizard It's very hard to find who exactly is responsible for those kinds of things, since such a huge group of people is involved

In Israel we have holiday where we're supposed to make bonfires, but somehow there was never a competition who makes the biggest bonfire. Guess it's more luck than brains, lol.

JAD
them's big bonfires

7:45 AM
Lag BaOmer (Hebrew: לַ״ג בָּעוֹמֶר), also Lag B'Omer, is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This day marks the hillula (celebration, interpreted by some as anniversary of death) of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a Mishnaic sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century, and the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of kabbalah in the form of the Zohar (Book of Splendor, literally “radiance”), a landmark text of Jewish mysticism. This association has spawned several well-known customs and...
@JAD wow lol

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard I'm not going to comment on the perceived amount of brains in those communities

@rene wait, so it means it didn't happen this year?

JAD
it happened last NYE

@JAD lol, sum of brains is below zero? ;)

@ShadowTheBurningWizard it is normally due at NYE. Something will happen

7:47 AM
Sum(IQ)<0

JAD
@rene well, if they can hide the bonfire somewhere, at least it won't be as big

If they find a nuclear weapon they set it off ....

@JAD another easy solution: turn off the fires as soon as they start, by having fire fighters on alert when this is planned to happen.

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard eh, it wouldn't surprise me if that'd turn into violence against the firefighters

and make sure to spray all the people involved with water as well.

7:49 AM
The crowd will sabotage the truck

@JAD high pressure water can do miracles. :D
Israel use it as non lethal weapon for long years.
(against protesters)

JAD
note, there have been a lot of incidents during last couple of NYEs where firework was thrown to emercency personnel: police, ambulance, fire fighters.

I would declare Duindorp a war zone and be done with it.

JAD
For some reason it's a good idea to give explosives to people
I wouldn't want to be there as firefighter
It's completely backwards

So bring the commando in. ;)
(or @Nog)
Nog can shine like the sun, making them all blind. :P
@JAD anyway.... what started all of this? Anyone knows?

JAD
7:54 AM
Not much of a trigger. We do fireworks because tradition. People like fireworks. Some people like to riot. Ergo people start throwing fireworks at others, like the police.
So the police has been calling for years to ban fireworks, but politics is slow to act because muh tradition. In the meanwhile people continue to throw fireworks at others
it's basically the definition of "this is why we can't have nice things"
There's plenty of people that enjoy it responsibly, but that doesn't weigh up against certain areas being turned into warzones like rene said.

@ShadowTheBurningWizard No, I'm quite sure I talked about those fires in here before too :)

@JAD but bonfire isn't fireworks
@Tinkeringbell oh, didn't find

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard hmm, but the two can't be seen separated. There will be fireworks near those bonfires. That's an absolute given.

@JAD meh... so raise the tax of fireworks, a lot, so people will think twice before buying them.

JAD
8:07 AM
you'd think that, but if you see what ridiculous amounts people spend on them, I doubt that'd do much

@Tinkeringbell oh, wasn't around

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Not my fault! Where were you? :P

@Tinkeringbell December 18th morning... hmm... might have been working! :D

I guess I should've been too :P
Oh well ;) Vacation now!

Good for you! :D

8:22 AM
I need it :)

JAD
8:33 AM
@Tinkeringbell :(
4 more days to work this year :/

@JAD Me too

@πάνταῥεῖ Me not

But only 2

Well we're now in a holiday without holiday in Israel
It's a Jewish holiday, but most people still work as usual.
@Mithical you work during חנוכה? ;)

I work at a tourist attraction. Take a guess.

JAD
We basically have 25% of our revenue between xmas and new years, so yeah...

@Mithical oh.... so you work harder than ever.
@JAD what/where you work at?
Amazon?

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard We compare, advise about and sell insurances. Health insurance is one of our big products and here you can only switch health insurance at the end of the year. And everybody waits with doing so until after x-mas

An answer to a question contains the following phrase: "the question posed here almost comes off as a troll". Should I edit this out? Ask the poster to remove it or rephrase it to something less accusatory? Or flag for mod attention?

Pick whatever you're comfortable with in this case.
You listed them in the right order though ;-)

Ok, thanks. I ll edit it out.

10:07 AM
@JAD oh. Weird, in a way.

JAD
10:30 AM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard it's one of those things that makes sense within the context of one country's laws, but not so much outside

10:50 AM
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd work is dead.

11:10 AM
@JAD exactly. Here we can switch any time, think with few months rate limit.
@djsmiley2k-CoW hooray! Endless vacation for you!!11!!!!1!! :D
Anyway..... now that Monica crisis is finally over, will everyone go back to their original names?

If anyone can't and needs a hand, I'd be happy to, assuming you don't mind me setting your username network wide.

@JourneymanGeek not a hand, a paw
Can you actually set the name, or only reset it?
(and avatar too?)

Can set the name to anything they want
My hands are so frickin' cold, I can barely type.

@Mithical gloves
And cream to keep them moist and not super dry

JAD
@ShadowTheBurningWizard yeah, it's something to do with basic health insurance being a mandatory private insurance where the government decides what is and what is not covered, but where insurance companies decide their rates. To keep things equal for everybody, a policy has a standard duration of 1 year, and prices can only be changed at the end of the year. So you end up with a system where the only moment you can switch is before the 31st of December.

@JAD here it's very much alike, except people can move any time.
Rates are all the same anyway.

12:02 PM
...
huh? So why two same reports? @Mith any idea?

*shrugs*

nods
drinking coffee

@ShadowTheBurningWizard basically I can set anything you can
resetting is pointless. I'll set it to what you want, copy pasted exactly ;p

@JourneymanGeek change them all to..... wait for it..... Shadow Not Wizard!

@Mithical This might warm you up a little: "Wintertime makes me think of Jimmy Jean"...

12:12 PM
(to make sure nobody knows it's me behind the change ;))

To whatever is requested, exactly as requested :D

Rob

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Only one is active, click on the [MS]'s to see two manual reporters.

@Rob so it's a bug, it should give "already reported" for the second reporter, not let another report on same post be created...

Rob
Almost simultaneous. Peek at HQ, where they were reported.
You can file on GitHub.

Do you know why bicycles cannot stand up on their own?

They are two-tired.

JAD
because two and too sound the same?

'cause kickstands are dangerous so I take them off

JAD
you know what's dangerous? Falling bikes
:P

Not if you know what you're doing. ;)

12:57 PM
@Mithical 0_0
Dangerous?

@JourneymanGeek Well, yes. They can get stuck in your spokes.

JAD
uuuuuuh
something has to be seriously wrong for that to happen though

Rob
Different for a motorcycle.

I didn't know we had self-driving motorcycles already!

JAD
1:02 PM
we do! for some definitions of self, and driving
... and motorcycle

@JAD IIRC @Mithical does bike off road

PID controller, overhead wires, or just a lucky take?

or just enough speed.

I'd still think it's an unstable configuration

Only need s to do 1 round :D

1:08 PM
Lucky take theory then?

or lots of takes

that's what I mean

JAD
bikes are pretty stable due to the angle of the steering wheel

Here it is on a closed track, self driving:

Could someone report this to smokey please

So a PID controller. Neat.

Merry Christmas to all who await it.
Happy Wednesday to everyone else :D

Both of those for you too :)

@Mithical i tried doing that from mobile earlier but figured it was a bad idea :)
Happy holidays and all that jazz :)

@ShadowTheBurningWizard How would I know? :P

5:45 PM
@Tinkeringbell Could I have a short clarification please? There were 3 people involved. Which two are suggested to take a break?

@Fermiparadox You and the OP of that post.
Just leave them alone from now on.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean I should not comment under their posts? Or answer their questions?

At least for a reasonable while, that seems sensible, yes.
And if you do see anything that's not okay, just flag it.

Ok. I'll refrain from posting answers and comments under his content. For what it's worth i didn't search for that user's content, I just read the answer and commented (without a hint of sarcasm or ill intent). I don't even remember what I've discussed with them in the past tbh. Anyway.

I can see that you both had at least two unpleasant comment exchanges in the last few days. So yeah, a bit of disengagement won't hurt here.

5:59 PM
I agree, no problem with that. Btw, i just checked what happened in the post and now I understand the situation.

Rob
No Mulligans, in Tournament play.

@user170039 I saw your comment and deleted it too. If it helps: There's currently 127 deleted comments on that post. It can be summarized as either personal attacks at Sara, or meta-ing in comments: Comments about deleted comments, about edited comments, discussions about whether people should vote down or not (kinda my fault, I started that), comments about the post score, and comment threads about whether the MSE community is nice or not.

All these threads add up to a huge amount of comments in no time, but commenting about deleted comments does add up too and drown out other comments, l

Next Skeptics HNQ: Did Thunberg's sneeze cause some global warming?
If the opposition merely considers her a spoiled brat and a troll, then this only feeds the troll
Which I kinda agree with, maybe as much as I prefer if I didn't live in a hot Jacuzzi

wrapping time D:

Merry Christmas everyone, BTW!
Hope 2029 doesn't end in such a shitty manner, if we were around to remind ourselves of these dark times.
Don't tell nobody but I gave a 10-year-old this ring to go throw in a volcano
#Parenting_Skills_FTW #They_See_Me_Rollin

@M.A.R. You don't have kids. So it's not a parenting skill ;)
Happy Christmas for those that do celebrate it :)

@Tinkeringbell Target practice

@Tinkeringbell Finally ending a decade of poorly kerned years. Cheers! :P

@curious XD and 2020 is going to be better? :p
I bet people will mess that up too ;)
@M.A.R. Ah. Yeah, that makes perfect!

9:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell not nearly as bad because there's no 1 in it :D

2021

See you in two years

@djsmiley2kindarkness Nooo! Don't leave us!!

@djsmiley2kindarkness :P

wrapping last pressie now \o/

Wrapping presents is usually fun :)

Tell me about it as I try to keep my eldest from scotch taping the baby into a mummy :)

See. Fun!
You should honestly let them :P

9:43 PM
x)

A happy belated Festivus to everyone

@Tinkeringbell nope
just immence feelings of guilt and inadquacy.

@djsmiley2kindarkness Oh. That doesn't sound fun no.. are you afraid the presents aren't good enough?

And how are they always received? ;)

9:56 PM
lol yes well

@V2Blast Festivus? Where's that from? And why belated?

a life long condition of anxiety and depression means, no matter how many times i'm proven wrong, the feeling never fades D:
i'm rather no presents at all

But you do get presents too? Don't like those either?

half the time i don't feel anything about presents...

@djsmiley2kindarkness Ah. Brains are weird like that sometimes. I'm sorry to hear. I've read exchanging presents for 'normal' people is mostly about the joy they get when giving...
So the not feeling anything might actually be more typical than you think
But if giving isn't fun either, this is hard.

10:00 PM
yeah I simply "Don't get it" and it's really stressful
I feel that I have to act pleased and happy
but reality is, i'd rather no one spent money on me
Remember Sheldon getting a present (for penny I think)
having to make sure he gets the right value, etc

I think I do, yes ;)
Reciprocity is hard :)
@djsmiley2kindarkness Maybe it helps to think about it as not what you want, but what they want to do. Like I said, giving presents is mostly beneficial for the gifter ;) let them have that pleasure...
How does Sheldon say it? It's the social rule or something like that?

yeah, that's why I do it at all
but.... i get no enjoyment, that's all

That sucks :(

I have a deal with some of my family
we don't celebrate christmas, and nobody gives each other gifts

10:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell Originally from Seinfeld:
Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23 as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. Originally created by author Daniel O'Keefe, Festivus entered popular culture after it was made the focus of the 1997 Seinfeld episode "The Strike", which O'Keefe's son, Dan O'Keefe, co-wrote. The non-commercial holiday's celebration, as depicted on Seinfeld, occurs on December 23 and includes a Festivus dinner, an unadorned aluminum Festivus pole, practices such as the "Airing of Grievances" and "Feats of Strength", and the labeling of easily explainable events...

My deal: I peel all those and I don't have to cook tomorrow

10:33 PM
i'm sat here waiting for the wife
beause she's not sorted the 1001 things she should of done

Sounds like my mom
Why do you think I'm peeling stuff at 11:30pm

lol
it's annoying
i've got sleep apnea so i need my sleep
tomorrow she'll be moaning at me for being tired
and i'm like.... i'm ready to go to bed at 9:30, I've sorted everything, lets go?

10:52 PM
@djsmiley2kindarkness I'd have gone already ;)
@V2Blast Sounds fun!! At least more than skinning vegetables alive, then quartering them ;)

11:21 PM
@Tinkeringbell For the vegetables, definitely :P

@Mari-LouA I was reading through the FAQ entry on suggested edits, and I found that the middle paragraph of the subsection "I'm not modifying the post body, but I'm still receiving an error about needing to change six characters. What gives?" is rather long and convoluted.
I took a stab at editing it to make it less convoluted, but it would be nice if you refined it further.
