hi. before I mess it up (not on MSE), can one markup the custom bounty notice? a quick search doesn't say

@ymb1 I think we could... I also think there's a bug report on the new post notices post that says it's currently broken though. Lemme see.

@Tinkeringbell perfect thanks :)

Sooo. I guess the answer for now is 'no' ;)

yep :D good thing I checked
thanks again

No problem!

1:21 PM
That was all manner of 'fun'
We have a dryer that's slightly over 20 years old
Its the equivilent of that old british car that your dad has in the garage and randomly catches on fire - its routinely tripped the house power
Dad insisted it was fixable despite tripping power in the house repeatedly
so.. we changed the fuse, it ran a while, and it tripped the isolation breaker thing we have just for that switch
he then tried it again... which took out house power
looks like we need a new dryer :D

Wait... that's the fire hazard dryer, right?

dryer was mentioned long ago...

@JoshsSocks you worked hard today. Go play in the dryer...
Are those @Shog's socks??

@ShadowThePrincessWizard I think Tink might have heard the story elsewhere ;p

oh not that Josh

1:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell mom's basically gone "I NEED a new one"

> I am a sockpuppet account for Josh, A.K.A The Unhandled Exception. I am used to test XMPP integration.

sigh XMPP

@JourneymanGeek Good of her!

@JourneymanGeek nah pretty sure you told about that dryer before, here. ;)

@Tinkeringbell dad wanted to give it one last shot. "Actually no, lets try the overload switch. Lets try that..." "DEAR I AM HAVING DINNER AND I TOLD YOU TO DO IT IN THE MORNING AND I AM EATING IN THE DARK! AND DON'T TRIP OVER THE DOG, HE HAD SURGERY YOU KNOW!"

SO yeah...

1:29 PM
XD
Sounds like any other mom :P

I think I told my dad about 4-5 times its beyond repair.
and there was the time he asked me to try a 3A fuse where we had a 13A...
I shoulda

Yeah I think that was the time you told me about fire hazards XD

Also, dad tripped the local breaker using the test switch at one point.
,_.
THE MAN IS AN ENGINEER.

my dad managed to wire the spotlights that were supposed to go underneath our backyard porch thing wrong. I think they were supposed to be wired parallel, but he made it serial?
Or the other way round.
Anyway, he managed to break things. Quite spectacularly too.

that's a slightly more natural mistake :D

1:34 PM
XD

Electricity, like gasoline, propane, or liquid metal, is one of the learning elements - it teaches you not to make mistakes.

You forgot fireworks :D

Rob
Fireworks that people can get ahold of are usually not too bad, and access to professional fireworks or high explosives is restricted. I probably should have left liquid metal off the list because it's difficult to get, but every several years someone will get a bunch of mercury and try boiling it in their kitchen.

Our neighbour does get the illegal stuff each year :|
Feels... very safe and responsible.

@Rob My family has a bad tendancy not to listen to me when I'm right XD
@Rob ... why exactly would someone boil mercury?

Rob
On Halloween and New Year's it's a tradition (for teenage males) to set off fireworks next to the police station in the park. They couldn't do it this year (set them off next to the police station) because the place closed.

2:24 PM
Also, I've set my hand (harmlessly) on fire, got shocked once, and got harmlessly hit by a firework XD

Rob
@JourneymanGeek I guess they could change the CoC and I could tell you about people whom boil mercury in their kitchen.

@Rob Well technically, they did. twice ._.
But I get. Nothing good comes of that :D

Rob
Here's one guess to make silver, at the cost of many lives and a mess that can't be easily fixed.

Oh
also used to refine gold ._.

Rob
2:55 PM
Gold is refined using cyanide very efficiently, but not in a kitchen.

Depends on the kitchen?

3:20 PM
@Rob Yikes! A century or so ago, some people "mined" alluvial gold by pouring mercury into a creek, and capturing the mercury downstream. They'd recover the gold by distilling off the mercury. I expect these mercury stills would leak a fair amount of vapour, but the operators didn't care much because they were doing this in the open air. But I wouldn't like to be downwind of such a still...

@Rob in aluminium pans, no less? :D

Rob
@JourneymanGeek Here's a great kitchen photo:

Ah what to do
i've finished holiday prep, for now at least.

@rene It was suggested in 2017 with 44+/1- so there exists a chance it's a secret hat, otherwise it's just a silver badge and a credit for your Candidate Score.

Hat hunters, meh
