If answers don’t give more reputation per upvote than questions anymore, should something be changed about answers? Maybe increasing the amount of reputation for acceptance?
Problem is that, while questions aren’t some incredibly easy thing to write, most of the time answers show more knowledge.
and that is something that reputation theoretically measures
Is “suspended for rule violations” a new thing? I just saw a few users suspended with that reason

Oh
I just hadn’t seen that one before
@JourneymanGeek is it like asking off-topic stuff or is it more like being rude?

uhm
It depends?
I'm under the impression custom mod messages and folks who have a suspension applied to a recreated account might have that

@JourneymanGeek What’s a recreated account?

someone who deleted a suspended account and re created it when the suspension is active
people do dumb things :D

5:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh does that happen a ton?

I don't keep track

If I got suspended I’d think I’d quit...
I mean if it were like a year or whatever

2 hours later…
7:59 AM
@Stormblessed That is a generic message that simply means that the suspending moderator decided to send a wholly custom moderator message along with the suspension rather than start with a boilerplate one.
It doesn't necessarily mean that the user violated a specific, codified rule.
Or, the account is a recreation of an account that was deleted for spam or user conduct (these deletion reasons levy a 14-day suspension under the account's name, which is "reinstated" on any new accounts the same user later creates).

@Stormblessed actually most probably don't. And well, I hope I don't need to suspend someone thrice for the same thing

Getting up at a quarter to four in the morning because you have to catch a bus to the other side of the country is going to be... fun.

4:22 PM
@user58 Does it involve tanks

only tangentially

Then it's gonna be boring

it probably involves a sound board more directly

Hey people
What is the thread in which it was decided to give 10 points for up vote on question instead 5?

Rob
5:00 PM
Plane, train, or bus ..., there are many articles online with advice about how to choose fastest, cheapest, most adventure, most pleasant options. That particular article seems to take the female perspective for travel in Europe; I don't know if it's the most applicable but there's 10's of thousands of other sites with advice.

@JohnDoea There isn't really a thread. It was decided by staff to revert the 2012 change from 10 to 5.

Rob
There's a discussion here which explains that it was decided upstairs and announced on The Blog.

Rob
5:18 PM
@JohnDvorak, that's a great quip in your profile: "There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation, naming things and off-by-one errors" - hmmm, one hard thing or three; or is it making a great quip which is hard ...

Or is it really two and a half things disguised as 1.25

Rob

Is there a way of viewing, in chronological order, the "last seen" of all users, that is, I want to see the users that have recently visited a certain SE?

5:34 PM
Just a heads up, but there seems to be a bit of an editing brouhaha going on in meta.stackexchange.com/questions/338498/…
That I unintentionally stepped into of course

user310724
@user58 thanks I replied my opinion there.

user102937
6:15 PM
is there a CM in here?

user102937
-1
A: Should the weight of question upvotes be increased network-wide?

ab2 ReinstateMonicaNowHaving just read the rationale for upgrading questions to 10 points, I have a brilliant -- brilliant -- suggestion of how SE can be even fairer to more people. It is clear that SE regards women as intellectually challenged (IC) but why restrict their new "let's help the IC" policy to women? ...

Does that need a CM? Think I can handle it too?

user102937
Please.

user102937
@Tinkeringbell Thank you.

user102937
For the record, I never did anything that annoying.

6:19 PM
That's why you got a warning first and this one is straight up suspended.

user102937
Yeah, well. A year's ban from moderation doesn't quite cover it.

user102937
The math doesn't quite work.

What I find disturbing is that what is going on is people are shit-posting. But they have a right. The problem is that the only solution is to delete them (Because people can't restrain themselves from replying).
Although I think I must draw the line at making such posts to mudsling or harm other people...
2 cents~ Cya later

user102937
[shrug] Nobody has any "rights" here.

Apart from the universal right to say what you think. There is no requirement that anyone listen, however.

6:28 PM
*raises hand* Wait, that was the left one. Never mind.

@FreezePhoenix That is not a right on this platform. Nor, IMO, should it be.
There's lots of things you can't and shouldn't say here.

Well, the rest of the world disagrees. I've heard there are cases where jewish communities have gone "Well yah, let the neonazis speak. We won't listen to them anyhow."

@Rubiksmoose how do we know you're not bluffing? I mean, if you can't say them, how do we know you know lots of things you can't and shouldn't say here?

@FreezePhoenix I'm not sure how the rest of the world matters when we're talking about this platform but...sure.

Because free speech doesn't apply like that. You're free to say what you want on your own platform, but not on other platforms.

6:39 PM
@JJforTransparencyandMonica Only one way to find out ;-)

@Rubiksmoose SE/SO whatever they call themselves, are behind the times, that's how it matters.

user102937
What times are those?

@Rubiksmoose my mind reading machine isn't finished yet, alas.

Somewhere in 2019, I think.

user102937
So, last week then.

6:40 PM
@FreezePhoenix China is booming, lots of money to be made there. A smooth transition into their market can be great for profits

@RobertHarvey Yeah pretty much.

user102937
Some people need to be reminded: it's not great just because it's new.

It's not great, but it's better...
Certainly beats the crusades

user102937
It's not even better.

@RobertHarvey it's been a bit longer and title is slightly different but I guess it's colloquially referred to as last week youtube.com/watch?v=OubM8bD9kck

6:42 PM
I mean the new times, 2019, beat the crusades
Crusades beat SO

user102937
Oh. Well, if you're referring to the great economic miracle that began 100 or so years ago, we arguably live in the best times ever.

Because in the crusades, you could live somewhere else...
SO is everywhere.

@FreezePhoenix even woke started in 2010 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

user102937
"Woke" is just another word. There were plenty of people who were enlightened long before that word came along.

@RobertHarvey the Scottsboro Boys used it in 1938, I don't think many pre-1938'ers are here now so we'll get away with woke ^^

6:46 PM
does anyone have a link or just the name of the site if the links is not allowed anymore to that discourse-based community where building an alternative site is being discussed?
saw it at work but forgot to bookmark, now can't find it

Build something else, move all the people, the people are the same. The community is the same.

user102937
Easier said than done.

@FreezePhoenix why not buy out this leadership?

why waste the money though

@RobertHarvey just need the money ;p
@user1306322 it's probably easier. Why have a cow when you can buy steak?

6:50 PM
technical debt I'd say

@user1306322 I don't follow

user102937

I've been reading about how "there's too much stuff to do before we can get to these feature requests" since 2013 on metas, so I bet they've been doing something, but the site codebase is now more tooled to things other than what the community was asking for all along
@RobertHarvey oh that's the thing, thanks!

@user1306322 it's all about the money

at the moment it is
if the company was non-profit, it wouldn't be

6:54 PM
@user1306322 few are. But really, it's all about the money, and even non-profits have people that can be persuaded by money even countries can, see Rachel Maddow's book amazon.com/Blowout-Corrupted-Democracy-Destructive-Industry/dp/…

I don't need to see a book to know that by now :)

I know it's about oil, but that's just because it can be converted into money

user102937
Ugh. We're quoting Rachel Maddow now?

I'd quote Yang but this isn't the place

@RobertHarvey well, I could call here the lady who got a Doctor of Philosophy in politics from the University of Oxford, but you'd see here name anyway in the link

user102937
6:57 PM
Not impressed.

@RobertHarvey but kudos, I like how you're talking to JJ for Transparency but take issue with Rachel
@RobertHarvey the reviews of the book are good too, #1 New York Times bestseller and raving reviews from the WP and others. But hey, way to judge the book by its cover ;p

user102937
I don't need to read the book. It can probably be summarized in three words: "Conservatives are Evil."

@JJforTransparencyandMonica I've recently sat down with my friends, and then family and then colleagues and among the 3 different groups we couldn't scrape together more than 30 movies from the top 250 imdb of all time which we could honestly say "worth a watch", so what does that say about ratings in general, idk :p

@user1306322 movies are about making a quick buck. Go for the TV series instead, people will drop out if it sucks so they need to maintain quality

yea tv series are about making dat loooong buck though and are usually a worse cinematic experience imo
have you seen how tv series ratings compare to movie ratings on the same imdb site?
movies range from 4 to 9, and tv series are from 8 to 10
it's already hard as is to tell good from bad, but with tv series only the genre fans vote (and heavily bias to the top)
and from my movie watching experience, not even a 10th of "the best" is worth watching at all
I've also seen some anime, so add that to the list somewhere :p

7:04 PM
@RobertHarvey it's about the energy industry corrupting governments to get favourable contracts so they can extract resources. It helps dictators stay in power. Perhaps it will hit closer to home if ever Rick Perry testifies for his recent dealings in Ukraine. He wants to make it the Texas of Europe ^^

user102937
There you go.

user102937
More than three words, but I'll take it.

@RobertHarvey the hearings will take even more words. But you can wash it down with beers and popcorn.

user102937
I haven't followed the hearings much. But I did hear Marie Yovanovich's opening statement. That woman is extraordinary. She's the one that should be running the country.

@RobertHarvey the US or Ukraine?

user102937
7:09 PM
Heh.

@RobertHarvey hey I'm not an American, I just have real beer and popcorn

user102937
As I read it, the Donald dismissed one of our most qualified government servants, because he believed the tripe that folks who have a vested interest in keeping lawlessnness in Ukraine were spouting through back-channels.

user102937
It would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

@RobertHarvey hey don't change the subject, I was talking about New Texas, as Secretary Perry proposed apnews.com/6d8ae551fb884371a2a592ed85a74426
or would it be Old Texas if the new world comes back to Europe?

user102937
Hey, you're the one who brought up the hearings.

7:19 PM
@RobertHarvey fair enough. well, it's not like the Donald is out of character. He was very famous for firing people when on the Apprentice.
@user1306322 yea, you gotta know who to listen to. If you tell people what you like and they like it too, then you can get better recommendations

at some point I have become that "someone to listen to" for myself, as I've exhausted all sources of recommendation
in terms of good enough hit/miss ratio, of course the sources themselves are limitless, but you know, below the threshold of being worthwhile to explore

@user1306322 so which TV series do you like?

Breaking Bad was alright and Better Call Saul I'm still waiting on the next season
there was recently El Camino movie which was also neat, but I don't think anyone who isn't familiar with the series will enjoy it as much

@user1306322 what about Homeland? Or even older series like 24?

ugh those dumb cliffhangers... I had a misfortune to bingewatch all of the Prison Break once... never again
this is not why I watch series
I've checked out The Boys recently and at first it was quite a different show, but then idk, I can't honestly recommend it as good, just as something a bit different from the norm, if you know what I mean

7:32 PM
@user1306322 if you want it to be more realistic you can also go for reality. Just make a new youtube account and follow channels you like on subjects like Brexit or the Impeachment. It has a lot more variety in content, cliffhangers (court cases) but there's a lot of discussion in between great episodes

well, I'm actually more interested in anything new at this point, which is rare in any era and media, and politics is certainly not something I'm into, for those reasons
and as a citizen of neither US nor any of the EU countries, I have no real interest in most popular political happenings anyways
haha Content Cop is actually in the top imdb tv shows list :D

@user1306322 Vice news has a lot of investigative journalism around the world, mostly subjects that haven't been repeated over and over yet

I prefer text, it's easier to scan for content and faster to get the gist of
any sort of video is bloated and slower than text, that's just the fundamental flaw of the medium

@user1306322 Twitter?

no, reddit

7:38 PM
@user1306322 problem with both of those is that they have poor quality control

reddit has better quality control than any other aggregator, in my experience
I'm also using RES to filter out 90% of the noise

@user1306322 it might work for selecting some stories, but why not select the sources you like and put that on a list (e.g. by subscribing on Youtube / Twitter / whatever platform you prefer)?

I'd put myself into an echochamber that way? and the platform I prefer is reddit, so I'm already there :p

@user1306322 now you're just in the echochamber of the ones doing to voting on reddit ;p

7:43 PM
I don't know if you know how reddit works, but you can subscribe to multiple subreddits (or use "multireddit" bookmarks) and see a variety of posts on the same topic but from… different echochambers? so it kinda evens out and gives you a wide range of views on the same topic from many sides
also if you're not sure, you can click on "other discussions" up top and see what other subs have commented under the same url
so far this is the most "un-echoed" chamber design I've found :p

@user1306322 hmm okay. I've never really been a fan. I don't like to read a lot. I just put on something and do some work. And when I have too much work I end up in places like this not doing any work ;p

heh
yea I guess I like to get quality useful information, and that's why I ended up being a user of SE in the first place

user102937
Enjoy it while you can.

Random annoying thing: why do the mosquitos here come one-by-one periodically each time after I manage to, umm, get rid of it...

there's an optimal maximum count above which they don't spawn?
you can also use repel on them, those sticks are still being sold on flea markets

7:49 PM
@RobertHarvey yea, you enjoy this one youtube.com/watch?v=eNqqQM5nuLw

so I've been browsing that imdb.com/chart/toptv list and there are even fewer western series I can call "worthwhile" than movies in the top 250 movies list...
it's got invaded by a bunch of anime series lately though...
some good ones at that

@user1306322 Yeah, good idea... more annoying since it happens every time I want to sleep...

@MetaAndrewT. or you can smoke em out, especially if you sleep outdoors. Indoors just turn on the airco, filters the air and the bugs don't like it.

@MetaAndrewT. in our country house I hang that mosquito mesh over my bed like a palanquin curtain, so I'M IMMUNE MUAHAHA

Potentially good answer on LifeHacks.SE!?

7:52 PM
absolutely

Thanks for the input, I'm considering one (or all?) of them :)

I'd be surprised if it's not already on there
we found a pinkish-white one which doesn't make the bed look like an industrial warehouse storage location, so that's extra points for aesthetics
I can see lots of white "mosquito mesh curtain" on amazon and such
shouldn't be a problem to find
it's so dumb seeing Adventure Time and Poirot next to each other in the ratings
such a bunch of numbered users with no avatars registered themselves to happy hour! chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/89/tavern-on-the-meta/…

user102937
@JJforTransparencyandMonica I've heard most of this already. Sound-bites. The media feasts on them, but ultimately they don't illuminate.

8:09 PM
@RobertHarvey there were many live streams as well. I've seen all of the testimony. It's great, much better than million dollar TV series, I recommend watching the full streams if you've got time. It's just two of them so you can still catch up.

8:25 PM
dat icon for Spanish.SE tho
German.SE didn't get a ß

@DeNovosupportsGoFundMonica I see the Q "My profile's about me randomly changed" has been locked. Personally it makes me feel relieved, at least to know that Meta mods have seen it, and there's some point to having discussed it. (I know you said you were not asking for immediate CoC enforcenment. Obviously I don't want to see SE flailing around and causing more problems yet again).

1 hour later…
9:42 PM
@sourcejedi I expect they're reviewing the general issue. They could speak to it better than me, but might rather keep it internal for the time being.

2 hours later…
11:21 PM
@DeNovosupportsGoFundMonica honestly? That post is a powderkeg and folks needed to calm down
There were personal attacks of folks who just commented and a monumentally Ill tempered comment thread
And honestly - I don't see most folks putting in a complicated set of constructed pronouns for real life use.Even most neopronuns are a small set.

11:46 PM
I understand this is new to many people, @JourneymanGeek, but I would encourage you to send it up the chain. If it's SE's official position that that any user's gender expression is not valid because it doesn't conform to what most people do, this whole exercise is pointless. It's certainly not helping support non-binary individuals.
In the non-binary community, that particular set of pronouns would never be questioned. I would note, that as far as the non-binary individuals I know of who participated in that discussion, we have ALL tried to explain that those are acceptable pronouns.
If the goal is to support us with this CoC, please listen to us when we tell you your troll meter is too sensitive
