@djsmiley2k-CoW If you want to finish that series, you're going to have to clear any extraneous events from your schedule for the next six months, and also probably create a spreadsheet to keep track of characters. Not saying you shouldn't, just letting you know it makes war and peace look like an easy read.
The last book is also the only book that has made me literally start yelling at a character.

@Gryphon-ReinstateMonica heh. I made the same joke about a song of ice and fire

@JourneymanGeek Having read both, WoT is much, much more complex. By at least two orders of magnitude. I literally had a spreadsheet to keep track of characters.
I read somewhat absurdly fast. It took me about 2.5 weeks to finish a song of ice and fire (up to where we are, anyway. I obviously haven't read the unfinished books). WoT took me two months.
So yeah, me saying that wasn't really a joke.

6:00 AM
@Gryphon-ReinstateMonica I would be quite cross If you had 🤣
Causality must be respected

Aww, but I wanna time machine.

@rene Sadly no, big boots to fill

Yea, we get it. You don't have to bring that up on every damn SE question.

it is part of my autocomments set ....

Oh, I overlooked "chat" in that message
Wake up, wolf -.-

Yea, I did

went to sleep waaaay too late last night

mag
one thing I learnt thoroughly since leaving school is to never play games with my sleep cycle
I needz da sleepz

Yeah, sleep is important.

8:12 AM
@mag Yeah it is definitely bad when you're up at 5am one day then 12pm the next, i.e. my lifestyle lol
It's easy to stick to a routine when you have a normal 9 to 5 job, but freelancing like I do tends to make you lose that routine...at least for me

mag
Maybe I'm unusually sensitive to it but getting my sleep cycle out of whack just dramatically lowers quality of life to a point where it is literally never worth it for me unless I'm forced to by external factors

Yeah totally agree, but that's the problem I have..."external factors" as you put it

@Cerbrus it's... Kinda true sometimes though

i.e clients whining that I'm taking too long to finish their work, so I have to stay up all night to get it done

Or at least people feel that way

8:17 AM
@mag It's mostly that if I go to bed late, I have a lot of trouble waking up properly, and that feeling will stick at least half the day.
@Kenny83 you do get paid for that, I hope...
Otherwise: Not worth it. Stop doing it ;)

mag
@Tinkeringbell both that and a lower level of energy throughout the day for me usually
the cadence of 8 hours sleep -> breakfast -> lunch -> dinner is very important to stay awake and attentive for me, so I don't break it even on weekends cause it just drags the whole day down in a way caffeine can't really fix

@Tinkeringbell Well 99 percent of my work is done on an hourly basis so yeah...but no overtime or anything like that if that's what you mean

@mag Ohhh, I do stay up late on weekends, but I do make sure to sleep in a lot too so I still get 8 hours. I often have breakfast and lunch in one go on Saturdays/Sundays too...
@Kenny83 Nah, if you get paid, that's okay. Still recommend finding a way to better plan your work though ;)

mag
I used to, but I get more done and have more fun sticking to my usual schedule I found

@mag yeah totally agree, but that's what I deal with most of the time...my body is kinda used to it now but yeah it's not healthy at all

mag
8:22 AM
also, a round of cycling to wake up properly on saturday morning just as the sun comes up along the fields and farms is pure bliss. Nobody up, not a soul you meet on the way, and afterwards you're properly awake

@mag Yeah I need to exercise more...or at all would even be good lol

mag
It's almost like parents were somewhat right when they kept harping on about sleeping properly and some exercise and the regularity of meals
for me, anyways. YMMV

@JourneymanGeek Even so, I see users dragging that into every single SE question...
It's annoying

@mag Yeah naa totally...those things are so important but I rarely do them ☹️

@mag Well, if they're dealing with a cranky baby Magisch otherwise... :P They probably figured you out pretty soon ;)

8:27 AM
@Cerbrus it kinda reflects folks are frustrated

mag
@Tinkeringbell I used to have a lot more tolerance for deviation in my teens

Hey @Sha where you at?? You summoned me here and now you're gone lol 😋

mag
used to stay up till 2 am and go to school in the morning - it didn't matter, it was school. I could catch up on sleep during the first couple periods.

@mag With the exception of 1 time, I never slept at school... I don't think teachers would let me even if I wanted, especially during classes.

@mag ROFL yeah 1st and 2nd period are for sleeping right?? Who cares about learning at that ungodly hour?
Definitely regret it now though

mag
8:31 AM
@Tinkeringbell I used to do anything but study in a lot of school subjects. I read books, drew stuff, did homework for other subjects. The early grades in german school are a complete joke and you can do well in the tests with a day of prep beforehand or even no prep, and the teachers knew

@Tinkeringbell I had one teacher in particular who would slap me over the head with a textbook if she caught me sleeping. But I still kept doing it lol

@mag That sounds very boring... Not that classes over here were very challenging, but definitely not that easy ;)

lol
I think the dude at the other site is bored
he keeps sniping my cases

So now you're bored too? :P

lol
he's a bloody ninja XD

Naw. He is more experienced than me 🤣
.... whoa
Oh, the actual helpdesk grabbed that case we missed at noon

@Rubiksmoose I have proof :P !

8:51 AM
Hey can anyone recommend a good media player for macOS that lets you download subtitles (preferably automatically upon opening a file) directly within the app?

@Kenny83 "good" "macOS", sorry, I'm having trouble parsing this... ;)

not a macOS user so don't expect anything useful from me.

@Gryphon-ReinstateMonica rofl I hear that! Unfortunately being forced to use it for various reasons that I won't bore you with, but yeah...need a good media player besides VLC or iTunes
In fact, just saying "good" automatically excludes VLC and iTunes IMHO lol
I might have to install a Windows VM on this laptop just so I can watch videos sigh

@Kenny83 I don't find VLC that bad.
@Kenny83 That seems... a bit excessive.

that seems... like a clucking good deal
@Kenny83 there's a site for software recommendations ;p
You could try there

9:01 AM
@Journeyman yeah I've spent the last 10 mins on alternativeto.net

there also used to be this site that did recommendations

No sorry it's a softonic subdomain...no wonder its s**t lol

I forgot what they were called.

OK thanks @JourneymanGeek, will keep searching
And @Gryphon, I didn't mind VLC either until it started leaving ._ files all over my network drive :@ Still persevered with it for a week after that, and now it's not reading subtitle files properly as well

9:05 AM
I'm half deaf so subtitles are very important to me...and Media Player Classic (Windows app) downloads them for you automatically when you open a file that doesn't have them embedded or doesn't have an accompanying file

@Kenny83 Hasn't done any of that to me (yet, anyway).

So I agree, installing a Windows VM just for that seems excessive, but I'm seriously starting to consider it...
Are you using Windows or Linux? i.e an OS that isn't crap lol
Thanks @rene, will check that link out! ;-)

9:29 AM
Joke answer: upload the video to YouTube and use its auto-generated subtitle 🤔

lol @MetaAndrewT. if you follow the link rene posted and click on the top result, that's what someone actually suggested in full seriousness
but a much-better solution seems to be this: github.com/agermanidis/autosub. Thanks again @rene!

@Kenny83 boo :D

@Sha AHHHH! DON'T DO THAT!!
lol
how's it going mate?

All good! Fixed some bugs, created others... usual programmer work... :P

now I want more rice with beans and chicken

hmm ok...the cheese?

@Kenny83 can't have cheese and meat together
That's non Kosher

ahh ok...but separately is ok?

@Kenny83 only after few hours

9:45 AM
There's a 20NIS pizza right by work that's not bad. I don't know when the next time I'll be there is, though :P

wow ok...I never knew! I know you guys don't eat pork but yeah

@user58 no delivery?
@Kenny83 yeah, tons of rules that look weird to those looking from the side. ;)

I'm not at work, and I meant I don't know when the next time I'm heading in is
@Kenny83 the rules are ridiculously complicated at the level that my tradition is

@user58 oh... wait, 20 NIS for whole pizza?? That's insane.

Noi weird, just not what I'm used to ;-)

9:47 AM
@Kenny83 fair enough ;)

Ahh fair enough @user587, are you orthodox?

I'm all for cutting some of the more extreme ones added as a sort of precaution, on the grounds that the precautions are unnecessary if you know what you're doing, but I have yet to convince my parents of that...
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Yeah. It's pretty small, but not too shabby.

@user58 good for you! throwing 20 NIS on @user58

@Kenny83 Yeah. Modern Orthodox. Dati Le'umi.

Modern Orthodox Judaism (also Modern Orthodox or Modern Orthodoxy) is a movement within Orthodox Judaism that attempts to synthesize Jewish values and the observance of Jewish law with the secular, modern world. Modern Orthodoxy draws on several teachings and philosophies, and thus assumes various forms. In the United States, and generally in the Western world, Centrist Orthodoxy underpinned by the philosophy of Torah Umadda ("Torah and Scientific Knowledge") is prevalent. In Israel, Modern Orthodoxy is dominated by Religious Zionism; however, although not identical, these movements share many...

9:50 AM
Hmm OK, very interesting!

I just found another Wikipedia page on religious zionism
same thing?

Nope
There are many many different "parties" by now

Ahh OK
Just like there's a million different forms of christianity lol

@user58 originally came from USA, where the above is the mainstream, as far as I know.

9:51 AM
yep

@Kenny83 exactly

Ahh OK cool

perhaps a bit more towards the left end than most, though

@Kenny you are also Orthodox, in a way?

@Sha no I'm agnostic

9:53 AM
Those aren't mutually exclusive. ;)

And parents too? Family? @Kenny

I believe that something/someone had to start it all, but believe in the big bang and evolution
Yeah true @user58
My dad is roman catholic, mum was protestant before she passed

Sorry to hear... (that she passed away)

Yeah thanks, but that was a while ago now

So dad is fine with you "ditching" the religion?

9:55 AM
and I'd like to think that she's in a better place :-)
even though I don't really believe in that place lol
Yeah he's not devout himself; never made us go to church or anything like that
But he went to a catholic school and sunday mass every week while growing up

@Kenny83 And you didn't go to any of those?

Catholic school yes, but it was worse than public school!

Went to public school for years 1 - 10, all boys school for 7 - 10, then catholic school for 11 and 12
and the catholic school was girls and boys
mixed together at the peak of puberty lol
you can imagine how that made things...different
lol
and the teachers didn't even seem to care

That's how most non-orthodox teenagers find their "first love", here in Israel and surely in all other places... and there was nothing wrong with that, IMO.
Yes it complicates things, but it's a lesson for life, mostly.

10:01 AM
Yeah true, as long as you are responsible
But most teenagers aren't IME
Lots of unwanted pregnancies etc

That's where parents should get more involved, IMO... not there yet and scared like hell, but that's my role to teach my children how to avoid those things.

Yes very true

(the education system sucks in those, pretty sure of that, so can't rely on it)
I had some lessons at 7-8-9 grades about "it", it was totally crappy and useless.
Anyway.... time for....
!!/coffee Kenny

But I guess I just expected a Catholic school, where they made us go to mass every Friday and preached about Jesus and sin etc, would say more against unsafe sex at a young age

@ShadowThePrincessWizard brews a cup of Cappuccino for @Kenny
@ShadowThePrincessWizard ... good question

@Kenny83 well to be honest it's common sense that unsafe sex leads to pregnancy, the teenagers know that, I'm sure of it. I knew it, and all my friends, without having to hear it in any class. :)
whoa Smokey you're lagging horribly
@Kenny83 kind of, I sleep 4 hours...

10:14 AM
lol
My children both were afraid to get stuck in the beginning, took a while to calm them down every time.
@Kenny might be stuck in Candy Crush though. :D

Whenever I'm somewhere else, I always test the lock on the door before locking it with me in it...

@user58 test how?

lock it, unlock it, see if it's sticky
I got stuck once. So...

ouch
At what age?

@user58 lol yeah you can't be too careful

10:17 AM
@ShadowThePrincessWizard 8?

@Sha sorry it takes me a while these days lol

@Kenny83 lol poor excuse! :P

and I'm only 36...how will it be at 86?

@Kenny83 diaper? lol

lol probably

10:18 AM
Actually my grandfather reached 99 without needing such things

@Sha wow good for him!

Yup
@user58 that can cause quite a trauma... how did you eventually get out?

I don't actually remember. Probably just kept playing with it until it opened.

And about kids knowing full well what they're risking by doing it...yeah of course they know, but they generally don't care lol. and I guess I just thought that at a religious school, the teachers would try to stop it. But I was wrong
@user58 that happened to me once at about the same age :-( was banging on the door for hours before a cleaner finally let me out

eek

10:21 AM
But thankfully it didn't scar me

I don't allow my kids to lock doors yet. So when in toilets outside, I keep watch outside until they come out.
Better safe than sorry, though not sure how they can learn to lock/unlock this way... meh

Yeah I would do the same for my kids if I had any @Sha. But I was at school, went in just before going home for the day, and so no teachers or anyone was around
lol @Sha...they'll learn eventually

@Kenny83 oh, good point. To be honest don't know if my kids lock the doors in school, never asked! lol
But I expect doors in school to be more simple to lock/unlock.

Yeah you would wouldn't you? But all the safeguards in the world won't stop a door/lock from getting jammed

heh, true
Well at least you had time to think a lot while in there, maybe do some homework, right? @Kenny ;)

10:25 AM
Well if they maintained them often, that would've helped...but my school was close to being shut down at one point. Barely had the funds for books let alone "unnecessary" things like that

Also, how come your parents didn't get worried and came to look for you?? @Kenny

@Sha rofl, what's homework??
coming from the child Kenny lol

@Kenny83 food for dogs, of course! :P

@Sha exactly lol! and parents did get worried, called the school but no-one answered, called the police but I had to be missing for 24 hours before they would even file a report, so yeah...
And this was in the early 90's, so no mobile phones
Well at least they weren't ubiquitous amongst kids

@Kenny83 they could just come to the school.... no?

10:29 AM
Dad was at work and couldn't leave, mum had no car of her own

Anyway my daughter got her own phone when she became 9

But she was getting close to getting on a bus when I finally ran in the front door bawling my eyes out

@Kenny83 ohh, right.... I got my first cellular phone when I was 20 or so, in 1998

Yeah around the same time for me, but I would've been in my teens

@Kenny83 yeah, I'm amazed it didn't scar you for life... guess I'd never lock a door again if it happened to me...

10:30 AM
@Sha I didn't for a long time lol

And wanted to attack that cubicle door with an axe lol

rofl
You could just break the lock so it won't cause others to get stuck

Never used the cubicles at that school ever again...didn't trust them lol

@Kenny83 but that was the door/lock fault, not the cubicle as whole....

10:32 AM
Imagine that happening to a poor girl?? They wouldn't have a choice...

So where did you go instead??

I know but I just didn't trust the school that they were maintaining any of the cubicle locks
Held on to #2's, did #1's in the urinal lol

@Kenny83 oh... you could just enter it and keep the door shut with a leg instead of locking it. That's what I did at school, since most lock were broken to begin with.

@Sha Yeah good point...lots of missing locks at my school too
All three of them lol

lol
@Kenny83 sometimes you can't hold #2 you know :/

rofl

@Kenny83 my method? Oh, keeping the door shut with a leg while sitting? :D

Yeah
I do remember doing that a few times now actually lol

lol my pleasure to make you remember your past better... :D

Then eventually I just got over it...grew up and realised you can't be afraid of locks all your life haha
lol yeah thanks

10:40 AM
@user58 how long did the fear last for you? well you said you still check every time, but did you ever avoid using locks at all?

Nah. I just started always checking... and have continued doing so for 9 years.

Time to go now.... and I'll just say that for me, quite a similar incident involved a zipper instead of a lock.... and it caused me also years long trauma. More details aren't good idea here, maybe Den. Cya!
@user58 to this day?

yep

Well, checking the lock just means extra wasted time.
If you have that time, it's all good.

rofl @Sha, I think I get the point...There's Something About Mary style incident?

10:42 AM
@Kenny83 huh? No no... lol

Oh thank God lol

@ShadowThePrincessWizard I don't generally use public bathrooms in any case, so it's not that big of a deal.

@Cerbrus I feel like this was my comment.... xD
And.... no, I'm not tired of them. SE expects a fair bit from their users.... and doesn't give a huge amount back in terms of listening, especially right now.
So while sarky comment is sarky, and possibly off topic. I don't think it's 'bad' per-say

11:31 AM
@djsmiley2k-CoW yes, because you use so many words and I got it after your 1st sentence, then you keep rambling for another 6 to 8 ...

except they don't 'get it'

I get that ...

In vocal terms, I'm very concise.
I dislike small talk as much as the next..... introvert (that's not offensive yet, is it?)

I'm offended but that is about it

I got moaned at for calling myself aspie and saying aspies are .... (whatever I said, Can't remember now). Maybe 'classically bad at social interactions' or something.
I'm fortunately high functioning (though sometimes it doesn't feel like a blessing as people don't realise how much 'extra' I'm going through)

11:39 AM
@djsmiley2k-CoW Perhaps bad at certain types of interactions. I can talk your ear off about some technology nobody cares about. I'm just oblivious to the fact that the person I'm talking to is increasingly in a panic that I am some crazy person.

@djsmiley2k-CoW How dare you say such an offensive and terrible thing. We all know that words are clearly an invention of the patriarchal structure of western society, and thus using them in any way is clearly offensive.

@djsmiley2k-CoW No, it was someone else

11:55 AM
k.
@DavidA except this is at work, about a work process.
'To do X, please follow this process. 1. abc, 2. def..." At this point they go "yeah yeah yeah".
