4:00 PM
Well lowest non deleted score on MSE is currently -380. Almost 10% of the way after 15 minutes...

user351483
Ironic that the immediate downvotes have removed it from the front page already.

If they're gonna publicly discredit monica like that I expect some hard evidence to be published at some point. Casting aspersions without proof is a big no no for mods, so it should be for staff too
9

@410 I read it during the brief time it was up and doesn't offer a ton of clarity. Monica's positions aren't exactly as she stated and there wasn't as much drama in the channel as advertised. Given the high passion about this, I'm not sure it resolved a lot

This is a huge PR disaster..

What's disappointing is that there's still a CoC change that is apparently still coming that SE refuses to discuss in any fashion, but they have at least reaffirmed they feel strongly enough about the pending change to have fired a moderator over it

4:04 PM
> We removed a moderator for repeatedly violating our existing Code of Conduct

i don't see any mention of a new one

@KevinB so what then? This is all filed under "she wasn't nice"? Confusing.

@CalvT also I expect she will hit 1 rep soon. There's no rep boot. There's only rep cap
So, it's possible

4:06 PM
@KevinB Er, no. That's the one thing the leaked transcript made clear. There was a "clarification" that touched this all off. So either the CoC is going to change or SO/SE is changing how they interpret the existing CoC. Either way, something changed

@OptimusPrime The post is at +18/-69. Thats still a net gain of 42 rep

@Magisch look into the future

Yes, i was making note of what I saw as a contradiction.

@Magisch No, questions only get 5 for upvotes, so it's a loss of 48

Even these posts dont usually drop below a 5:1 downvote/upvote ratio
ah
yea

4:09 PM
@OptimusPrime More like a rerun

Let's be honest here, no matter what the reply, it was going to be a downvote magnet. Kinda pointless to focus on that and rep effects really.

real talk though, I just can't take SEs pure word for this

@Machavity That one also got 15 upvotes. May be the director asked CM's to upvote it, lol

I've known monica for so long, and I've never seen her as anything but scrupulously professional and kind, and she's directly contradicting their version of events. I won't take that on faith alone.

user351483
I think people want to see Sara with 0 rep.

4:11 PM
Can please somebody explain what rules from Code of Conduct were violated by fired mod? I can't find this info all over the discussion threads.

@Bart No, I would have upvoted an honest reply. Something that said "We won't discuss specifics, but here is what we are trying to do and we felt Monica was not on board with it"

@sanyash That's the big question - we don't know, and so far SE don't seem to want to tell us

@Machavity so that's a +1 then against another bunch of users who wouldn't care what the reply is ... ;)

user351483
@sanyash The actual clause doesn't exist yet. They've still not published it. However it "exists" in SE land somewhere.

@Snow iirc, they said the current coc already prohibits that behavior, but that facet of it hasn't been clear or enforced, but will be harsher going forward

4:12 PM
@Snow unless the argument is "she violated our existing CoC" instead of the soon-to-be-updated one?

they also want to publish a clarification

@Bart There would be less -1 votes I suspect. Either way, the current post is only worthy of downvotes at present. Community is important to SO, just not that important

@Snow 1 is minimum

So, pitchforks yet?

I have no energy for pitchforks anymore
only sadness

4:16 PM
> You have fully used your vote allowance for today

Don't use pitchforks. Don't be sad. Take a step back, figure out if there are any positives left, or new positives to be had. And if not, find something else in life to put energy and time in, which is rewarding.

good night, until tomorrow

If SE has proof of a CoC violation, I don't think sharing it would solve anything. It would only break any remaining moderator trust of communicating with SE.
It'd be a big corporation with all the cards punching down on a user.

forget the pitchforks, use this situation as a learning opportunity, for example George posted this example of what the official response could have been instead of what it actually was: meta.stackexchange.com/a/334263/183800

heh, the "friends" in the beginning was edited out

4:20 PM
the whole thing can be studied extensively and used as a guide to how to first of all not create such situations, and second, if it's created, how to fix it

I am very pleasantly surprised to see that coming from George. Awesome!

I wonder if they had that prepared beforehand

@Bart aye that's an awesome post

@Bart George is very reasonable. Our opinions on various things differ but he has the best of the community at heart and is a very kind person

communitybuilding.stackexchange.com can gain a bunch of content
2

4:26 PM
The worst thing is, they didn't try to convince anyone who wanted to quit.
Few mods : We're resigning
SE : Ok bye
Someone : I want to get my account deleted.
SE : Done
This isn't the way to handle such situations

@OptimusPrime Tim's comment yesterday made it very clear that they knew the consequences when making the decision and thought it was worth it, though

They seem to be in "attack mode", or at least were before...now they seem to be pulling back.

it's lose lose either way. If they decided to go in the totally opposite direction a different group of people would be outraged.

It's not really fair to classify that as incompetence. They're making a calculated move.

@Magisch I think I missed it. Can you share the link

4:28 PM
You don't convince them through direct speech anyway. @OptimusPrime "We're good now, right? Please come back. <kissy-emoji>" ... The best you can do is present how you're moving forward and hope that convinces some of them to rejoin. It's probably the most honest approach.

@OptimusPrime That would be here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/333965/…

imo removing "Friends" at this point should not be done to preserve the original form of official communication

@Magisch this is what seems, but how sure you are?

@john refer to the comment I linked above. It's densely packed information, so may a few reads to unravel

For example, Sara left an answer on Robert's meta post saying we're sorry to see you go. Instead she can say, It's a hard time for all of us. We agree we made some mistakes but we assure you that we'll work hard to resolve it. We're temporarily not accepting your resignation... blah blah blah

4:31 PM
Serious: is there a negative rep cap?

@AndrasDeak no

@AndrasDeak no
That has never come into play before I'm sure

@john it's like in that bird picture meme, "the move I made was calculated, but boy am I bad at math" :p

@Magisch Honestly IMHO the only reasonable reason they should have done what they did is if there was a direct threat of violence or direct harassment. Basically something involving serious legal consequences for taking longer to act. To me the decision seems knee jerk and reactionary.

Depends

user271002
4:33 PM
@AndrasDeak She doesn't have much reputation left anyway.

I'm not a director at SE, so I'm not making a judgement about what would have been a better decision in the interests of SE itself.

always fair, and mine is just an opinion

I expect a second big wave of resignations in the wake of this

welcome back Oded

👋

4:41 PM
When standing between a mob with pitchforks and a mob with torches, telling both mobs to chill and calm down does not seem like a choice that has a long life expectancy

@Oded long time no see

Ha. Even /. have this as a story: tech.slashdot.org/story/19/10/03/1557215/…
@Magisch hi ho

How's things?

@Mgetz then meta's going to be killed

@Mysticial Yes AFAIK once SO was made aware of the charges, that's when they acted.

4:42 PM
@Magisch I'm doing better than Sara's reputation.

we need mods to stop that edit war ...

@Oded cheeky, I like it

There seems to be some disagreement on whether or not the question should keep the "friends" language. meta.stackexchange.com/posts/334248/revisions

There are no mods, @rene

The only way they can stop the edit war is locking the post
which ... probably not a great plan

4:43 PM
Art's edit comment is gold though - We're not

@Oded :/

Just one person changed it back to it.

@RoijanEskor I say it should be kept. Regardless of whether it's a good idea, it's part of the original poster's intent
Edits should not change OP's intent

@rene Isn't ChrisF and Tinkeringbell still modded on MSE?

Let the post score reflect how people think of it

4:45 PM
I haven't seen Tink since last thursday, though, so something might be up

@StevenM.Vascellaro I agree.

@Magisch yeah, technically they are. Both are seasoned enough to be careful what they touch.

@Magisch Last seem on profile says 16 minutes ago

I meant to revert it with a comment, but forgot I needed to use the edit button for that
"Rollback to Revision 5 - Edits should not change OP's intent, regardless of if we agree with it"

petty
leave it alone
2

4:48 PM
Good idea

@Oded wow the comments... I'm on reddit a lot and people say it's bad there, but this is much worse

That might have helped, yeah. Oh well.

410
More than "Friends" at the beginning, the "never ship at 6 PM (EDT) on a Friday" is tone-deaf to the extreme. Comparing this to some incorrect 0s and 1s being released.

@user1306322 emotional subject, handled badly.

410
It wasn't 0s and 1s who got dismissed and publicly maligned.
2

4:51 PM
@Oded Understatement of the Aeon?

@Bart cough

@TylerH Oh ic. Obviously I don't know the whole story since I only heard about it 2 months afterwards.

@Mysticial Not that much time passed between the user being inactive and SO reacting (a couple days, IIRC)

I avoid downvoting staff posts lately, but I couldn't help myself

@user1306322 slashdot has a large russian GRU crowd as late... so expect that when reading comments

4:52 PM
call it a guilty pleasure. Don't have the energy to get really angry anymore

Not appropriate @rene? If so, sorry.

PSA: I understand the excitement, that doesn't mean anything goes. Please keep it civil.
11

I pinned that
reasons

I'm mostly staying quiet

I'm sure there have to be companies specializing on PR disasters that can be hired, and there's gotta be a plan which SE's budget can afford instead of doing this in-house like it's just any other site out there, unless they've calculated and decided it is not worth it.

4:53 PM
@Bart meh, on the edge. I can handle it, others might not.

87 and counting (backwards)...

Delete it. Fine with me. Dutch language in translation

@TylerH IIRC, it had been 2? months from his last activity to when the meta post went out (which is what I saw).

@Mysticial oh? Well, maybe I'm getting it wrong then

2 messages moved to Trashcan

4:55 PM
@TylerH Either way, it's just a technicality. The end result would've been the same anyway. Just was wondering if he was removed for one reason before the other became known.

410
@rene But.... Calls for "civility" protect the powerful and sustain the status quo. A major no-no in these inclusive times.

@410 please don't

Now Sara is competing with 3x Tim, Joe, Juan and Sam. All of them are employees

@410 yes, you can spin it however you like. I prefer you don't

Quotes generally have a context. You can't just apply them like stamps on any situation that suits you.
I think it was Einstein who said that... :p

4:59 PM
He said a lot of things

that reminded me of a Bender quote

@Mysticial Yeah. My perspective is: moderators have gone on leave for many months at a time; I imagine if the absence had been benign (e.g. illness or something), SO wouldn't have acted. But in this case, I think (personally) they obviously acted based on the reason for the absence, not the absence itself

"repeatedly violating our existing Code of Conduct": citation needed. "CM’s repeated requests to change": citation needed. — Monica Cellio 1 hour ago

I'm not buying either assertion without proof at this point
until they prove otherwise, I'll assume they canned her for no adequate reason

Which you will never get.
They will not release any TL transcripts.

5:07 PM
Then I'll never believe they had a good reason to can her.

@Randal'Thor let's start with them telling us exactly what part of the current CoC they think I "repeated violated". There's a lot of discussion in that email including of deeply personal identity-background stuff, so I want to know what the charge is before I decide if that response would help. They didn't even tell me what they think I did. — Monica Cellio 1 hour ago

@Oded TL transcripts can be accessed by any mods. If 20+ mods decided to resign, everybody can understand who did the mistake here

we did, ofc.

What they're supposed to do is, release the copy of mail communication.

@OptimusPrime someone did release transcripts. It went badly for them.

5:12 PM
@OptimusPrime I meant SO.

@ArtOfCode they know who released them?

@AndrasDeak possibly
its still a gross violation of folks privacy

very much, yes

@AndrasDeak All I know is the version published on Reddit was quickly removed

As are these accusations I feel
We all have really strong personal feelings about these things
ah... crap
I don't want to post this as aibo

5:14 PM
@Machavity They were removed from imgur, with who SE have a fairly good relationship I guess based on the whole stack.imgur thing, so would be fairly easy to get deleted

@Aibobot ah!
I was about to ask you if "language" can be ignored now, but I didn't see you around :P

@Machavity It was hidden from the thread but not deleted from the user's replies page, FYI

@AndrasDeak it should not

@Aibobot Change your name to anonymous. Nobody will ever know...

I'm currently on work system and my phone
@Machavity eh

5:17 PM
@Machavity Least in the current climate
as long as I still feel there are people worth fighting for, and with
and as far there's something left of the community
I'd rather use whatever little influence I have to make sure that if we come out of this, there's something left to rebuild from

might be time to think about that negative rep cap

well, I thought about it :p

meanwhile somewhere in MSO, Tim said they may change the mod message template meta.stackoverflow.com/a/390077/2427065

So pretty much, this is the only way we have to show what we feel

5:21 PM
It was silent and nobody noticed it.

Getting close to the fifth most downvoted post on MSE. Achievement unlocked.
8

So, here's the big thing for me

@OptimusPrime Well, I suggested there's a better way to let people know stuff in-network. Someday...

Now there's two possibilities
I'm not sure what SE"s trying to do here
is this a single incident that's spiralled out of control
or whether well

@Oded an hour and a half after posting, no less.
there's a lot more downvotes where those came from, yet to come

5:24 PM
1 message moved to Trashcan

2 messages moved to Trashcan

thanks

@Oded its a lot to ask but... erf

I don't know why this needs to be said again but this is still policy in the tavern: Absolutely no personal attacks on staff members. None. Zero. Criticise staff as a unit all you want but nothing personal. We will kick enforce this here without exception.

if you have any contacts in the company... who could... erm
I think yoy get what I mean

5:25 PM
No matter your opinion on what Sara posted, ad-hominem remarks are still 100% forbidden.

I'd also like to say. We're all furious
2

user619714
@JourneymanGeek, Ravi, go out, get some fresh air. SE is not life.

@user619714 I'm at work

@JourneymanGeek I honestly think the CMs just want it to go away. I mean, these are political answers. "I'm sorry you were offended..."

@JourneymanGeek I'm in shock

5:26 PM
@user619714 and well

@JourneymanGeek lol not me this is both slightly entertaining and very educational at this point

Also, using my real name? geeze
Only my mom gets to do that
But I guess we're hardly friends so I give you a pass

user619714
sucks to be me

Maybe that's your mom?

user619714
toodle pip

5:27 PM
naw

Also, the title is wrong. There is no apology at all in this "reply". I searched. There's not even a hint of apology. Huge thumbs down. — Shadow 20 secs ago
I'd edit it out of the title, but might get suspended for this. Not worth it.

@Shadow not worth it

That's what I said ^

Couldn't pay me to edit that

I did put another tag

5:29 PM
and honestly - I would recommend not touching the question

I'm not touching that with a bargepole

ANyway

Exactly, stop editing the post. It's petty at best.

before I was side tracked

Removing the "Friends" is good. Seeing it there is just appalling.
4

5:29 PM
@Shadow this is not facebook, there are no thumbs down

@rene my thumbs are down. Want to see?

if folks goal is supposed to make the community look bad

:D

which is possible

@Shadow yes

5:30 PM
@Shadow I don't think removing "Friends" is good, I like to preserve the original texts of official communications by staff when possible

@JourneymanGeek some might argue we've been looking bad for years already :D

We absolutely need to stay calm and act in a way that's clear but not lowering ourself to being rabble

@Bart I'd happily fight for removing the "Friends" but yeah, nothing else.

> We’re sorry for the confusion and uneasiness that caused.

I honestly was tempted to do what many folks did

5:31 PM
The OP went from 323 to 1 rep.

Good.

@Shadow take the high road

@AndrasDeak "we're sorry y'all feel this way". That's not an apology.

@Shadow careful

@AndrasDeak This is what I'd call a non-apology. I've always been taught and found it is best to refrain from posting those. It makes others assume bad faith of you, for one. And it does nothing to mend the harm that is intended to be mended by a real apology

5:32 PM
@AnneDaunted I don't think anyone will miss that

@AnneDaunted that was her first MSE post.

@Oded could "I'm sorry" not be taken as an apology in US speak?

@Oded admittedly it can be hard

@Magisch if it were an answer it would stop it from being NAA

but only just

5:33 PM
Enough to prevent a title edit
@Magisch agreed

only just

@Oded Their first question, but they wrote 4 answers.

@AndrasDeak Oded isn't american ;p

@AndrasDeak "I'm sorry" is not an apology.

@JourneymanGeek works for me

5:34 PM
@AnneDaunted thanks for correcting me.

I'm sorry

An apology has three elements:
1. Admission of responsibility
2. Understanding of the wrong that has been done, and why it is wrong
3. Acknowledgement to avoid repeating the wrong
2

At least, they received the Popular Question badge.

@AndrasDeak What he's describing is blame shifting. "I'm sorry you were offended" can be taken as "I'm saying this only because I have to". I'm not saying that's what she did here, but that's when "I'm sorry" isn't really an apology

The post we got is only an apology with respect to the tone deafness and timing, not to the substantive matter at hand, so #2 has not been satisfied in my opinion

5:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek My dad would have said she wrote three questions on MSE... first, last and only.

@Oded I wrote a lot ;p

@Magisch and this is why I'm in shock. I expected either a "It was our decision live with it" or a "we made a mistake and will be fixing it shortly" I got basically the former trying to pretend its the latter.

Its not what you write, its what you achieve ;p

@Oded To be honest, I'm kinda surprised it came as a Meta post anyway. I would have expected this to be a blog post.

And yet, I'm not sure any of that really matters right now :/

5:36 PM
Welp, 5th most downvoted MSE post. It's official. See if she can get higher.

Okay, y'all. I'm not saying it's even the start of a proper apology, or that we should feel better about it. I'm only saying that it's not fair to remove "apology" from the title if you want to take the high road. Which we should because if both sides are petty then there's especially no way to get out of this.

@Bart I expected the same with comments disabled.

@Bart I honestly don't think she gets how deep the anger goes

@Bart probably better as an MSE post, lets people vent.

or does.
erf

5:36 PM
@Mgetz Rock and a hard place. Lets make a thought experiment. Pretend you're SE's PR person and tasked with communicating that you're sticking to your guns 100% and have done nothing wrong but somehow do that in a way that avoids more fallout

I prefer the former
@Magisch you don't though

There's not really a way to do that

As hard as it is - sometimes you need to give something that makes pepole feel like they actually won
or could win

@JourneymanGeek I'd not focus on her so much anyway. Sure, she's the figure head in this case. But I'd assume it's by no means just her involved

@Magisch I'm too blunt to be in PR hence not even replying to any of the posts. I can't honestly find the words that don't sound accusatory or non-constructive at the moment. I'm simply too hurt.

5:37 PM
@Mgetz I understand
Thank you for taking the high road

@Magisch at this point, I'm finding it difficult too

@rene sure.

focusing on individual staff members is unconstructive

@Magisch though

Come on, it wouldn't have been hard to improve. They could at least have been so honest to actually thank and honour the "moderator's" long and hard work for the network, even though they won'r re-mod her.

5:38 PM
because it's just speculation, for one. We have no view in SE's decision making process and it is unfair to assume one

it feels difficult at this point to seperate the person and the action

That is correct
And the only thing that keeps me from breaking into an angry brimstone and hellfire rant right here is massive mental effort

there are people within this community who could advise on what to do and say and how to fix this, but only with the best interests of this community, which I don't know if they align with the company's since they're not talking yet

@Magisch have some Substral

@Magisch go for a walk

5:40 PM
I doubt there's going to be a next piece of official communication earlier than 12 hours from now, so for today it's fine to just take a night off

@JourneymanGeek The only thing allowing me to hold my tongue is years of practice. I'm not sure we're all better for it always.

but the marshmallow roasting is just about to begin
@Mgetz we are. Us regular people saying things can only make things "worse", but not better

@Magisch heh. And cause there are still people I believe in in the company

@AndrasDeak we got the whole night ahead of us, we don't need to do this near the building, let's go elsewhere where we're not bothering anyone

the building burns the best

5:42 PM
Heh someone just upvoted all of Sara's answers

yes, it was time for that

Hey @user58, you saw your rollback also removed valid edits?

So... While I'm not a mod any more...

There was a moderator once removed for being a criminal? I never heard about that before, but now it was mentioned two times. I only know of the Silkroad guy, but he wasn't a mod, was he?

@AnneDaunted oh god... That one

5:46 PM
I believe that the retaining the original words is important here. The exact timezone doesn't matter, what's important is the sentiment.
4

No. DPR was never a mod

@AnneDaunted no, not silk road guy. But let's leave it at that.

that ^

Okay

Thanks

5:47 PM
@user58 okay, can get behind that. Just in case you missed it.

@AnneDaunted There was a mod arrested and convicted to prison, yes. It's not really publicized, for obvious reasons.

@AnneDaunted and this was a very long time ago

This makes me wish I didn't have 3 days left until I could revert my username away from my real name

I'm surprised anyone remembers
@StevenM.Vascellaro change it on SU and let me know

@StevenM.Vascellaro If you ask nicely a mod might be willing to help.

5:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek Can't change it on SU

can room owners refresh users' current main site names manually?

@StevenM.Vascellaro SO?

No. Only mods can.

I thought it was on like a 20 minute timer

Does that question break several records? Like most downvotes and answers in shortest span of time or something?

5:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek I changed it network-wide 27 days ago
Gotta wait another 3 days

@StevenM.Vascellaro dosen't matter

@StevenM.Vascellaro What do you want to change it to?

Stevoisiak

ooh
@user58 you wanna or me?

I think you may be able to create a site account with a different name and choose your main site to that?

5:50 PM
Done.
(auto correct...)

It will take some time for your chat profile to resync with your new name

@user58 Thanks!

@user1306322 That only works for changing your Chat.SE name, IIRC

It seems to have already rolled out to my SO and SU profiles

Yes, your MSE profile is also changed; it's your chat profiles that will take some time

5:52 PM
I wonder how many people didn't recognize me because of the name.

And it's just now updated

Sweet
Feels much better

Why is there a rollback war?

we may be able to ask the editor

user351483
I guess we might see another batch of resignations shortly.

5:54 PM
@AndrasDeak Some people want to be friends with Sara, some don't

@Snow I would be surprised otherwise
@Oded :|

@AndrasDeak The original post started with "friends", which had been removed twice.

is it a good idea to add an XML comment at the top asking to please join this chat room and explain your reasoning for a new edit?
so that we get the attention of those not in chat

next time maybe two version should be posted, one for the friends and one for the rest?

user351483
I can't resign twice, just like I can't downvote twice. Darn it.

5:55 PM
or at least as a way of saying people are keeping an eye on it

Kaz
Somebody should probably lock it

@Snow you can run for mod, get elected and then resign in 6 to 8 days?

@rene Dear Friends and Dear Community?

user351483
"Friends" is making an assumption in the same way that "he/she" is. It denies our right not to identify as Sara's friend.

@rene One for friends, one for Romans and one for Countrymen.

Responding here as it is the top post. We aren't going to re-litigate the past. We can't share more details as they involve real people, both moderators and people that work here. What we can say now is that we will do better in the future. We'll be clarifying the CoC and putting out processes for how to remove moderators as well as one to appeal a removal ASAP. — Sara Chipps ♦ 3 mins ago

Too fucking right we're going to appeal this one. Let Monica be put to the new process. Allow her a legal retrial.

@user1306322 often requested feature

perhaps a good time to link it for some extra upvotes, maybe it will boost its priority, idk
I have no idea how priority works with feature requests, never had

One interesting part of all this has been seeing how different communities overlap.
