@Catija oh, the heat sink had some issues - I THINK the mounting pins were busted or something

It ran hot. I redid the heat sink gunk... it... went up to 102 degrees celcius....

turns out the heat sink wasn't touching the processor...

picked up a nice, cheap unit with a few minor features that the stock one didn't have...

runs 32 degrees.

So... 10 degrees over ambient is considered "great"

.... 5 degrees over ambient is "What the...."

in a good way ;p

@Catija 102 degrees is basically about as high as a processor would go before the built in safeguards nopes like a badger

low 30s is the sort of temperatures people build very fancy cooling setups to do ;p

so, it was a big enough problem that I replaced the PC ;p

then decided to see if I could fix it

Probably. GPUs are a lot more sensitive to that anyway. No hardware shutdown, I don't think.

PIVs were very efficient... and converting power to heat....

so they tended to overheat, so intel had great thermal protection (there's this old video of an AMD catching fire)

Yeah old CPUs were very vulnerable to overheating.

Modern ones don't like the heat, but at least they protect themselves.

Both the Tjmax and the thermal throttling do wonders.

First it made sense. There was the A register, and the B register. If you wanted the top or bottom half you could use AL or AH. But then they extended it to 16 bits and AX. Then AX to EAX, then RAX.

The 32-bit register names start with an E and the 64-bit ones start with an R. What do the E and R stand for? Is there a reason for choosing these alphabets? Also, in 64-bit registers, too, we can see in any low-level debugger such as Windbg that the right-most bits are still referred to by the ...

So yeah it's just "register".

Smart cards even today are insanely limited.

They're designed to cost cents to make and 4 MiB either has to be DRAM which is cheap but requires expensive controller logic, or SRAM which requires an entire 6 transistors (sometimes 4) per bit.

They're >90 percent either rants or blatantly OT questions.

The upside is it won't look like SO when there's an OT wave.

I mean, I'm not even on active. I'm on Newest. But when I see what the page looks like, and that the [on hold] is not really visible, I'm sure it won't be a new user's fault if they saw something like it and decided this was SO but with more coconutty refreshments.
