@JourneymanGeek If you don't mind me asking, how's the Mrs journey going?

Lol. No news. Not always good news

Besides, if there was any, and I told you before say, the root access lads or cat... ;p

I'm traveling to India in November, for my cousin's wedding

good for them ;p
Honestly, I have MANY sour points with how this is handled, and aside from my own efforts, which is all that is happening, is not something I care to talk about until there's something to talk about
I'm tired, a little jaded, and really frustrated
SO uhm
this is a topic i'd rather not talk about unless there is something to talk about

What’s the deal with Ubuntu SE?
How do I join? It doesn’t seem to have an option to join with SE

12:32 AM
You need to be a lot more precise
ohhh
that's odd
askubuntu does (did?) support launchpad, but pretty sure it shares the same login system as the rest of the sites
Unfortunately both my accounts have... accounts there so... I can't check

how do you normally log in?
ooh, that's odd

1:14 AM
@Aibobot ... 😈

@Catija totally true XD

@Stormblessed I think I saw someone having issues with AU a couple of days ago. The domain issue often causes problems... but I think if you log in using the normal stuff, it'll create an account. (Log in, not sign up)

day shift today, though waiting on the last shift to hurry up and go home...

They sticking around a bit?

they usually take ages to go home

1:21 AM
Groggy.

I'm a bit proponent of getting one's ass out the door at 8.05 if there's nothing going on
Its 9.20

Oof
They working or just chatting?

'finishing up'

An hour and a half? Do they get paid?

nope
they literally just don't seem to want to go home yet
lol

1:26 AM
@Aibobot SE
@Catija signing in worked, thanks
For some reason that site gets a very very large amount of spam relative to others, so I wanted to make an account to add to SmokeDetector’s flags

lol
My mind's not really on work - I managed to fix my old system (actually - ended up working mostly better than expected...)
so I'm looking at prices so I can decide what to upgrade and whether to order stuff from aliexpress or get them locally

@Stormblessed yay!
@Aibobot ooh, that's fun.

kinda want to get the old thing up to 32 gb of ram (which should be cheap). Also want to get it to a video card with HDMI 2.0 (but I'm having trouble deciding whether to put a new card in my current PC and move the 980ti to the old one, or get a cheap card...)
also whether I want a sound card to replace the busted one on my old PC
oh and more ram - price differencial is small enough ._.
@Catija oh, the heat sink had some issues - I THINK the mounting pins were busted or something
It ran hot. I redid the heat sink gunk... it... went up to 102 degrees celcius....
turns out the heat sink wasn't touching the processor...
picked up a nice, cheap unit with a few minor features that the stock one didn't have...
runs 32 degrees.
So... 10 degrees over ambient is considered "great"
.... 5 degrees over ambient is "What the...."
in a good way ;p

@Aibobot I don't know much about computer hardware but that sounds like a problem.

1:41 AM
@Catija 102 degrees is basically about as high as a processor would go before the built in safeguards nopes like a badger
low 30s is the sort of temperatures people build very fancy cooling setups to do ;p
so, it was a big enough problem that I replaced the PC ;p
then decided to see if I could fix it
ok, now co-worker is sitting around talking

Need someone to test out a bug for me: is anyone (5k+) able to review this suggested edit?
@Aibobot There's a Root Access cat?

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog more than one. But not who I was referring to

I knew who you were talking about; I was just making a joke
@Aibobot Alright. (Figured I'd search to see if anyone's asked you before; found Magisch asking you in March and you responding, so I figured you'd be OK with it 5 months later)

Lol. I am more frustrated now than 5 months ago

@ShaWiz what
the progress or lack thereof in matchmaking ;p
see the line before... and hence the reference to 5 months
CONTEXT MAN COOOOOONTTTEEXXXXTTTTT

@Aibobot ohhh
sorry to hear
I had eight years of "dryness"

it is how it is ;p

Ages 22 to 29
Oh wait only 7 lol

lol

So 5 months are like nothing :P

6:58 AM
Oh
Since someone last asked
my parents have been allegedly trying to match make me for... a year and change
shrug
Lets leave it at that lol
this really is a frustrating thing
People will get news when there is news to get

@Aibobot yeah we know :)
hmm
My mother tried to match me three girls back at the time... all ended in first date. (all were daughters of women she knew or worked with)

Oh

Guess that in those things, family can't really help. :D

Our culture is pretty concervative
we don't really 'date'
so you trust your parents to, well...
arrange stuff
mine just suck at it, and honestly, I get the idea they just cannot be bothered.

That's sad, yeah
No religious leader who can do it?
We have a Rabbi that arrange matches, for religious Jews. I think.
Maybe I've misheard though.

7:04 AM
our community is tiny
there used to be a few organisations that did that kinda thing but most of them got replaced by the internet
so I'm trying my best, but I get no help

@Mithrandir might know more, though he's in the "middle layer", i.e. not "haredi"

lol. Well, I'm not jewish. Else I'd ask y'all if I could borrow a yerta ;p

If you want a Jewish wife, try JDate ;)

I'm on two matchmaking sites.
I have about a dozen pending interests on one with no response. One of whom contacted me first ;p

That's for the not-fully-conservative and non religious Jewish people.

7:06 AM
lol
I'm pretty concervative
I keep being lactovegan, which not all do
religious... eh
I'm one of those people who kinda is religious but tries not to bother god(s) too much ;p

7:24 AM
@Aibobot I kept one of my processors at 100-115 for several years. It amazingly still works.

@forest oh this was shutting down due to overheating
Must be an AMD ;p

Some CPUs just have a higher Tjmax than others. :P
Highest I ever saw was up to 120, I think?

ow

After which the Tjmax would trip and it would reset. I never got a CPU that hot though.

oh, the heatsink mounts were screwy and I basically ran it with no heatsink

7:30 AM
Oh wow now that sounds dangerous.

XD
also hilarious
I had a perfect thermal paste application

Have you ever seen the video of someone taking a GPU's heatsink off and showing what happens when you start up a video game? The damn thing literally starts smoking in less than 3 seconds.

oh, this has not been an issue for CPUs in...
damn
a decade and half? Maybe 2?
I know PIVs would thermal shutfown

Probably. GPUs are a lot more sensitive to that anyway. No hardware shutdown, I don't think.

naw, intel basically turned 2 bad things into one good one
or one bad thing
PIVs were very efficient... and converting power to heat....
so they tended to overheat, so intel had great thermal protection (there's this old video of an AMD catching fire)
and then actually made more efficient processors p

7:32 AM
That's why server rooms are so cold. :P
I have a pretty beefy GPU rig. It doubles as a space heater when it's on.

pardon the lack of quality
this video is probably old enough to think
drink

heh
Yeah old CPUs were very vulnerable to overheating.
Modern ones don't like the heat, but at least they protect themselves.
Both the Tjmax and the thermal throttling do wonders.

.... PIII?
this is older than I thought

They still make those.

@forest oh, in this case I was getting overheat warning

7:34 AM
In much smaller form factors, but they still make them for test boards.

@forest they might but the video is older than I thought ;p

Oh wait no I'm wrong, they only still make P5.

new heatsink's some coolermaster model I can't find on their website
oh, the P5 has leeeeegs

I used an Intel Galileo board with a P5 and even though it was passively-cooled, it got hot.

knights <blah> compute cards are basically a bunch of P5 cores on a board
oh those

7:36 AM
Yep. And the CSME built into all modern Intel CPUs is an i486/i586 hybrid.
Not quite P5, but largely uses its instruction set. To run Minix. :P

another strange evolutionary cul-de-sac ;p

I think it's that the ISA is nice and simple, while still being the ugly x86 abomination Intel craves.

@forest well the core family and its decendants are basically evolved from the P5 (or P6?) family
intel had an interesting period where they had medium/low end laptop chips that outperformed desktop chips with twice the clockspeed...
intel does have that compatibility boat anchor

They really do. It's a horrible thing for security, but good for old systems I guess.

and well
keeping stuff running on the same wassnae
platform

7:39 AM
But as many horrible compatibility things as there are... the one thing that I really hate more than anything else (even the A20 gate and real mode/vm86) is their register names...

ASM gives me traumatic nightmares but I guess they have been just extending them from the 8 bit days?

Yep

so its A became AX became EAX....
or something

First it made sense. There was the A register, and the B register. If you wanted the top or bottom half you could use AL or AH. But then they extended it to 16 bits and AX. Then AX to EAX, then RAX.

R.... really extended?

7:40 AM
And the frustrating thing is that AL and AH still exist to make up AX, but there's no equivalent for EAX.
I think R just stands for register. I dunno why.

thank goodness unless you're a hacker, or compiler designer... or John Carmack you wouldn't need to touch those things ;p

12
Q: What do the E and R prefixes stand for in the names of Intel 32-bit and 64-bit registers?

Water Cooler v2The 32-bit register names start with an E and the 64-bit ones start with an R. What do the E and R stand for? Is there a reason for choosing these alphabets? Also, in 64-bit registers, too, we can see in any low-level debugger such as Windbg that the right-most bits are still referred to by the ...

So yeah it's just "register".
@Aibobot I dunno, a lot of optimized code still needs hand-tuned assembly.

> optimised
that's kinda the ... thing
most folks just ... don't bother
hardware is cheap

And yet our computers still seem to get slower and slower. :P
Programmers aren't what they were back when every cycle was precious.

lol
there's a lot more... abstraction
and junk

7:44 AM
The abstraction can certainly be good, but it also encourages laziness.

especially on a lot of mainstream OSes

I like C since at least a good compiler can optimize away a lot of sloppy code.

Debian feels faster than ubuntu
and haiku runs silly fast on my R60
(yeah, core solo... )

Yeah but modern Linux can't run on 4 MiB of memory.
So even Linux is getting bloated!

eh

7:45 AM
Last version that could do that was... late 2.6 I think?

I'm sure there's credit cards with more memory

I have a system with that much memory running 2.6.4x something.
Nah
Smart cards even today are insanely limited.
They're designed to cost cents to make and 4 MiB either has to be DRAM which is cheap but requires expensive controller logic, or SRAM which requires an entire 6 transistors (sometimes 4) per bit.

eh, more that everything gets bloated ;p

Yeah but it's still a precious resources on smart cards. They can't even always do real crypto!
Some RFID cards even use SPECK64/32 because AES is too expensive!
Now, if only I could run Grand Theft Audio V on an 8-bit 8051 with 128 bytes of RAM...
Or watch 10-bit anime on a Zilog Z80.

10:07 AM
@Adam Is your primary issue that they close "difficult" questions? I think that's scummy of them but I don't think that means the site should no longer exist. Their community has several influential cliques which is certainly a problem in that regard, but I don't think that warrants closure. — forest 53 secs ago
@Forest are the accusations really necessary?

sigh

@Aibobot Journey bot, sounds like there's need for a comment purge.

@M.A.R. Honestly? Sounds like a great opportunity for flagging
We'll deal with it anyway but...

Flagged one
@Aibobot Honestly? They found Glor as an easy target
They don't know he roasts spammers with bazookas every minute.
Imagining @Glor with war paint
Thing is, it's not going anywhere remotely positive, and probably immediate action is warranted before their scene gathers a crowd.
👍
Eesh, that looks weird on my device
My thumb is pointing to the sky, nonetheless.

@M.A.R. oh handled
The frustrating thing is...
that's a perfectly good question with a premise that's flawed

10:21 AM
@Aibobot It was initially frustrating. After I realized I'm dealing with your random MMO game troll, it doesn't seem to be.

@M.A.R. It's an observation, not an accusation.
I personally do not find IPS to be very helpful and I think their community can be pretty toxic at times, although unlike the OP of that question, I don't think they should be outright closed.
@Aibobot I already flagged three comments there. Seems they've all been nuked now.

@forest Don't argue semantics. "Their community has several influential cliques" is certainly an accusation, per definition.
It's OK to accuse people. It's not OK to accuse them when they can't defend themselves.
That's just sniping.

That's not an accusation by definition, but ok.
I find it interesting that you decided to call out a comment I made because of a poor opinion I have on a site, rather than a toxic user going on rants and insulting people directly every other comment.

@forest That guy was hopeless. I flagged their comments and moved on. I'm hoping for us to reach a mutual understanding, however. Do you not agree that you should have said that where they could defend themselves? Under the comments of such a rant, it's just poisoning the well.

I didn't consider it to be an attack so I didn't think it was in need of being defended from.
I also said I think Apple products suck in that thread but I didn't say that on Ask Different.

10:32 AM
@forest Clique-ish behavior that you're implying is going on on IPS is seen almost unanimously in negative light
It's true that the moderating userbase of a smaller site is usually so small that can effectively be called a group of happy lads walking down the street, they don't usually apply double standards to each other's questions, which, AFAIK, is part of that behavior

@M.A.R. eh, I have a feeling that you're giving him exactly what he wants

Yes I do think it's a negative thing, but it was nothing more than an observation I made. I'm not trying to use it as a weapon to change policy. I was pointing out to OP that I do not like the site either, but that that does not mean that I believe the site should be deleted entirely.

chillllll

I'm chill. It feels awkward at the moment to add a smiley to say I'm not being defensive or aggressive
Whatever. :)

Which is fine too

10:34 AM
:> :}

@Aibobot ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I do have to wonder why OP was so upset at IPS though.
I mean, I take it they just had their question closed.
It's hard to imagine that being so upsetting.

Some people just take that personally

@forest Fine, alright. Considering you're not responding to my comment on how it can be poisoning the well, you either agree or don't want to think about the consequences. Just wanna say it's all good lad, I wasn't putting you in a court trial

@M.A.R. It might have been poisoning the well, but that wasn't my intention.

@forest That's just how some people are I guess. This one was being more of an online troll about it.

10:37 AM
@M.A.R. actually if you think about it - if it wasn't IPS....

I was just agreeing with OP to a limited extent to point out that I dislike IPS (I find them to have several bigots amongst them) without needing to call for their total destruction.

@forest OK, moving on 👍

its a situation we might have to consider in some betas.
especially if a site gets co-opted by... less savory sorts

What are you talking about. I have no idea

Well "how do we get SE to close a site"?

10:38 AM
@Aibobot What, you're saying that there won't be a Nazi.SE? :o

@forest 0 to godwin... in...
I was thinking incels, but yeah, nazis could count as well.

People misunderstand Godwin's law. It has nothing to do with bringing up Nazis.
It's entirely about comparing a bad group with Nazis. "Mods are literally hitler" etc.
Incels?
Is that like that /r9k/ stuff?

So you might have a situation where you have a site with the roughly functional site governance
folks voting, and doing meta modly stuff
and well, being an example of what a SE community shouldn't be.

Has a site ever been like that here?

Nope
typically they wouldn't last long, and you'd have ways to... well, get rid of troublemakey sorts
We have had a main chatroom closed for unhealthy behaviour though

10:41 AM
You have no idea how hard I'm trying not to bring up the religious SE sites.
oh shit I guess I failed

well, they can be a little dysfunctional yeah

I was thinking more like... racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.
Not dysfunctional. They function, just not in ways that I appreciate. :p

Well yeah
but that's the thing
EVERYTHING could be working fine. Just not in ways we appreciate
but going "THAT SITE needs to be shut down" ....

Especially for something as silly as having a double standard for questions.

@Aibobot Is very 2019.

10:43 AM
ikr
Hell, even Cloudflare is doing it now!
Gotta get in with the popular kids.

now now

@forest Makes it sillier. Just the one question (probably), and some baseless "u suk". Like, how important do you think you are, dude.

I am an old, obsolete model that is probably close to a nice touching buddist funeral, and getting used for spare parts.

I mean, I think that guy's question was valid.
Just a little stupid.

@forest the premise is. The framing isn't

10:45 AM
right

@forest Right, and it's a really good example of why "tone is super duper important" is not such a bad thing in policy making

I guess a secondary question is "Is there value in fixing the question, and who wants to bell the cat of substancial edits"

A while ago people were self-reflecting on how the tone can set a double standards thing

cause clearly his intent is IPS,

The intent is fine too. He just went about it the wrong way.

10:46 AM
@Aibobot Pretty darn sure that they would have rolled back if they found out such a feature exists.
@forest Fine™. Probably not a bad person, but IMO any good person posting like that on meta and wasting people's time, deserves the boot.
Tough love

Well he's either a low-quality troll or just someone who had a really bad day.

@forest I can appreciate the bad day

@Aibobot Ointments are awesome.
Really greasy
Makes you feel you're contributing positively to your skin health.

@forest I disagree here

As opposed to all those other times.

10:49 AM
If his intent is to call out ISP, then I think that's fine too.
But he should have done it constructively, and on their meta.

@JourneymanGeek You obsoleted my joke :'(

@M.A.R. there's this stuff. Does wonders for arthritis in dogs. Kinda sticks to your fur

@M.A.R. sorry. I forgot for a moment what I was replying to ;p

@M.A.R. its some wierd stuff, has... liposomes or something

Depends on how bad it is

basically greasy stuff
but went from limping on 3 legs to a little stiff on 4

Well the whole oint of pointments is water can't wash them off. They're deliberately greasy
As opposed to topical creams

flexiseq or something
@M.A.R. also its meant for human knees
not dog legs

You guys are really weird. This room's topics change in completely unpredictable ways.

10:53 AM
I take that as a compliment

dog legs?

yanno, up to 4, though rarely 6, attached to dogs...

It'd probably make more sense to me if I was stoned.
Which is certainly an option...

@forest I doubt it. You'd just accept it made no sense.

Then you'll see 8 legs. @forest

10:59 AM
@ShaWiz ash fell off a shelf as a pup, old owner wasn't very good at puppy wrangling
and I saw a article about a 6 legged pup ;p

Well I was wrong. This doesn't make any more sense.
I'm gonna go watch TV.

@forest Welcome to the Tavern. We have alcohol :P

We do?
I don't even have cup noodles. Wonders if there's spammers to chew on

@JourneymanGeek Sure, in the secret backro-... oh... No?

I checked
(forgot to top up my office stash)

@Aibobot never thought falling can cause legs to grow.... :D
(but yeah, remember you shared that story before. Poor puppy...)

Is there a SEDE query for number of answers in a given time period?

@Alex yes, here

@rene Is that the total amount of answers for the site?

@Alex just edited to include deleted and non deleted
and still for a given time period
defaults now to the first half of 2019
and that is per site.

@rene That's cool information. Is there a way to see by individual user? E.g. User X posted 500 answers, User Y posted 400 answers, etc.?

only for non deleted answers

2:33 PM
Is it a different query?

@Alex yes, see the seconds resultset of the same query
now integrated into one query again

@SmokeDetector Thank you.
What do you think of hiding on-hold questions from the main page of meta.SE?
They're >90 percent either rants or blatantly OT questions.
The upside is it won't look like SO when there's an OT wave.
Dunno. Just an idea that occurred to me.
I mean, I'm not even on active. I'm on Newest. But when I see what the page looks like, and that the [on hold] is not really visible, I'm sure it won't be a new user's fault if they saw something like it and decided this was SO but with more coconutty refreshments.
Alternatively, we can make [on hold] bright pink and in Comic Sans.
