hm
blah. I need to find an arabic reader

I can read Arabic numerals! :^)

hindu arabic numerals ;p
never mind, I worked out what to do ;p

@ShadowWizard 'bout 8.5 yrs ago

hah. So I was right. And no one ever noticed it ;p

user302202
Marketing.... more accurate... error: does not compile

user302202
Leaving aside the question of how attaching more banner ads to sites promotes a more accurate way for people to look at SE.

[screams internally]

@VoteDukakis I think they mean advertising for stackexchange over advertising on stackexchange
And I suspect that people thinking that they're getting what they want is a critical aspect of selling them a thing
(of course users being users, they turn it into what they want)
... Jon's link indicates the latter
never mind

2:07 AM
Where is Jon? The Snow one?

2:21 AM
haha what
Is that just some troll copying a spam post or is that just really bad spam?

3:11 AM
Most likely a spam bot that doesn't know how to link, or care

No I mean the last word it used.

A rude bot that sometimes include spam?

Pfft
Gone

I actually laughed out loud when I read it though.
Just because that was so unexpected.

Admittedly, the absurdity on some reported posts becomes entertainment to some of us...

Rob
3:19 AM
JG, beat me to it (Unclear what you are asking). :)

@Rob yeah, it almost sounds like someone got chained to a desk with a keyboard and was asked to write code

@rene woof

Is this just a case of a (huge) language barrier: meta.stackexchange.com/q/328541/158100 ?

@Shog9 proof or it never happened. ;)

I for one feel like it's lost in frustration

I mean.... forget about me... but everyone else?? lol

@rene Someone opened a browser console?

6:43 AM
@Tinkeringbell oh ... I didn't consider that option ;)

@rene ahaha what
They don't do the API thing!

I bet they don't even talk about SE.
Maybe they just want to quit their job?

And they need our help?
I think Tinkeringbell's theory is good. It could very well be a developer's console.
@ShadowWizard If that's their job, why would they say they can't code?
(It makes absolutely no sense to me either)

@forest many times non-programmers are assigned programming jobs, just because their employer is clueless as well. So yeah, that's not a surprise.

@ShadowWizard soup with yogurt? Now you ARE weird.

6:56 AM
So while the money might be good, it can get really frustrating to be ever-dependent on external sites/people to do your job. :)

Can someone clueless hire me somewhere with a good salary pls. kthxbye

I hereby give you a good salary. Good.

@Margarine thanks! :D

@NoDistractionWizard Are you being deliberately clueless

Clue.Less("@Margarine");

6:58 AM
@ShadowWizard Don't we all?

@JourneymanGeek No.

@JourneymanGeek No.

Hey, I like my job!

<Margarine Salary="Good" style="type: Weird;" />

I get to do fun things!

6:59 AM
:P

@ShadowWizard Weird and proud

This work is weird..

7:29 AM
@Margarine how much proud?

@ShadowWizard four ounces and half

@Margarine that's just 127.573 grams. My coffee is more proud than you then. :P

Proudium is a very rare element. I bet your coffee has 0.0001 grams of proudium
Even less if it's not homemade

@Margarine my coffee has even rarer element: shadium.

That's shady business
I don't want anything to do with it

7:42 AM
For sure
You can't handle it anyway.

Whatever you say Hulk

My pleasure!

If your rep was given by a fake account, then the upvotes what you've got were fake. The bad thing was not the removal of the fake ups, the bad thing was that they were given. However, typically only a very little rep is lost on this way. You should not blame the SE, you should blame the ones giving fake votes from fake accounts. Btw, if you had got fake downs from him, also these had been deleted now, resulting a positive rep change (it already happened multiple times to me). — peterh yesterday
Wow, am I seeing this right.

7:57 AM
he's right in a sense

@Magisch No I mean he managed to write a comment, or even engage in a conversation (haven't read other comments), without resorting to outrageous conspiracy theories he himself knows are too stupid to be real.
Why isn't he like that on meta.SE, I wonder.

8:16 AM
Evan is the same.
OK-ish in most places, troll-ish on MSE.

Rob
Is that the Peter Principle?

@ShadowWizard actually no.

8:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek not OK-ish or no troll-ish?

9:14 AM
Yes

9:43 AM
@ShadowWizard he is ok where he actually cares. Which is not most of the network

@NoDistractionWizard Where?

@NoDistractionWizard Oh well. That one will be gone when the post is deleted ;-)

...I really need a computer with more than one core.

Your laptop has only 1 core? :/

10:49 AM
In this incarnation, yes.

My sincere condolences.
What was the outlook for getting a new one? After tourist season?

Hopefully, yes.
I'm trying to write something, which means I have a dozen research tabs open, and now I can see the letters typing themselves out as I write this a full two to three seconds after I press each button.

That's bad.

Q: How to flag comments as spam?

@Tinkeringbell everywhere, for several years. (comment flag reasons changed.)
That's a change I did notice. /cc @Shog ;)

@ShadowWizard I meant where the post/comment was XD At least NoDistractionWizard understands me :D

11:13 AM
@ShadowWizard Maybe you need a bit more 'no distraction' yourself :)

11:55 AM
I'm starting to hate PDO

I don't like PHP either...

`$statement->fetchColumn()` returns false if:
1. The column is set to NULL
2. No rows were found
thats dumb

@Magisch Well, in either case you can't really fetch, can you?

12:10 PM
yes, but I need to handle both cases seperately

$ash->fetchBone()

e.g if a delivery note is generated without being linked to an order (order_id is NULL), I need to then look for the manual customer id field to fetch customer data. While when I can't find the note at all there is nothing to search for and the procedure needs to abort

Sounds like an extra if statement.

sounds like mandatory using of fetchAll() instead of fetchColumn because using the latter discards the result unless you assign it

12:19 PM
$Journeyman_Geek->fetch($a_bone);

1 hour later…
1:44 PM
Access. The bane of my existence.

@fbueckert I discovered I was quite handy with computers when using Access...

@Tinkeringbell Oh, don't get me wrong; knowing Access is one of the things that has led to my career success.
And a few gold medals prior to that, too.
But damned if it isn't insanely unfriendly to use when it gets ornery.

Oh, that's true. So use something else? :P

Can't; company's apps are all Access.

Okay, then pick a different company to work for! :P

1:47 PM
Also a possibility. But until then....
Access.

Well, I hope you survive ;)

Oh, I will.
I'm not sure my computer will, though.

@fbueckert "Dan krijg je nog eens wat nieuws" < Dutch cliche, translated "Then you'll get something new from time to time"
The translation doesn't capture the optimistic sarcasm from the original though.

Or the Chinese proverb, "Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it."

@fbueckert the dreaded "can't open anymore Tables" when you just opened one?

1:51 PM
@fbueckert Nah, this one is different. ;)

@rene Nope. This one's just a straight up crash when I try to attach a datasource to a report.
No warning, no error, just, "Hi, I'm going away now. Bye!"

Oh, cool.

@fbueckert We have an access app in production that crashes the debugger when you start it
And runs the client out of memory usually around 3-4 hours after launching due to piling, non discarded, suppressed runtime errors

@Magisch Never ran the client out of memory, but had to recompact at least once a week.

Nobody will touch that thing here
recompiling it is not possible, it won't even open the code editor unless you're running xp service pack 1, and any attempt to fix or modify it has left it more broken then before. Currently in the process of replacing it alltogether

1:55 PM
When you can't debug the code, there's not much else to do but torch it and call it a job well done.

well yeah
I have it open on a VM to work on the replacements, and using CTRL+F to count instances of On Error Resume Next I come up with over 700
the sledgehammer approach to file system management

Oh boy

We used to have to be veeeeeeeery particular about how we deployed one of our apps; had different versions of Office, and Access is super happy about upgrading them without telling you.

sounds fun
almost as much as self modifying code

It had the programmer's UI to end all UI's, too.
Only it was for the users.
Everything on one form. Just squish buttons and text and labels so it all fits.

2:00 PM
oh we got several like that
the developer had a penchant for putting buttons with only icons and no tooltips next to things that did complex and irreversible things without confirmation prompt

Did you also have an app that started as Excel, moved to Access, and then used a migration tool to move it to .NET?
And there was no refactoring or sanity checking anywhere along the way?
So it was still sort of an Access app, only in .NET.

one instance I personally came across was a button labeled * that:
1. Connected 3 network shares
2. Checked folders in each for files with some horrid pattern abomination
3. Launched a command line script to move them to a new file system
4. Created new folders at the new system
5. Created database entries for the files
6. Linked the entries to the workstep you were currently in
7. Removed the original folders and files

And it was used throughout the production process for this factory. From start to finish.
@Magisch That sounds like someone was trying to be clever.
Or a manager telling their coder to, "git 'er done', and wouldn't take no for an answer.

@fbueckert in this case, a former apprentice (sysadmin) being told "You make the lab management system now, btw we need it in 6 months"
someone with 0 coding experience and no help. Considering that, the thing is almost beautiful

2:06 PM
@Magisch Yeah, I run into codebases that are created organically like that all the time.
Access is too easy to make things happen in, without the judgement to know how to do it correctly.
So, yeah, it can get done, but then it slowly becomes a complete unmaintainable mess.
So you throw it out, hire an intern to make it fresh, and start all over again.
My first coding job, I made an e-commerce website out of Classic ASP and a buttload of VBScript.
Took me six months to make, and the backend was a horribad Frankenstein mess, but damned if the thing didn't work.

I had a friend (now at google) who paid his way through college fixing those sorts of projects for people after they had breaches.

Well, you hire a kid straight out of high school, you get what you paid for.
So that one's all on the company.

2:21 PM
@fbueckert Thats also why good ERP systems are expensive as hell
points at SAP or similar

> $5000203000 and you'll get the best ERP in the world!

SAP is cheap. Just don't hire a consultant to implement it ....

And spend x100 money on trying to figure how to install it...
Shopping time!

@ShadowWizard bring me some milk and honey, will you?

2:37 PM
dumps guano on @rene

:/

IS PLANT FOOD

NEED COMFORT FOOD!

mulch?

Now I want guac.
And chips to go with it.

2:40 PM
@rene Adds pokon
@fbueckert I'll take the chips without the avocado stuff. I'm not that kind of millenial

@Tinkeringbell Avacado sushi is amazing.

I'm a Zer. No avocado. Unless it has liberal amounts of salt.

Avacado in general is decent with other stuff. Like guac.
By itself? Not sure. But I wouldn't think it's bad.

user302202
<- mostly fueled by Steak & Guac wraps from Subway

user302202
Guess that's sufficiently non-millenial.

2:51 PM
What, really, is a, "millenial"? It seems to be used as a derogatory term more than just, "someone born at the turn of the century".

@fbueckert Actually, it's people born just before that: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennials
And it's a valid social concept, not just an insult :)

user302202

user302202
^ internet news in a nutshell

@Tinkeringbell The concept, sure.
The way it's used in most places, though, is as an insult.
And I guess by that definition, I'm a millenial, too.

@fbueckert Welcome to the club!

2:54 PM
@Tinkeringbell only if its on toast

If just barely.

Also, millienials kill everything apparently

@fbueckert actually he was really good with security, that's literally what his specialty was.

@Mgetz I was referring to myself. :P

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, we're massively wrongly portrayed in contemporary media ;)

2:55 PM
then again
I do olive oil and nutritional yeast on toast

The only time I've had avacado toast was when I needed to get rid of some bread I'd baked and didn't have enough garlic to make garlic bread

hah,
(I'm currently tossing garlic-olive oil on everything since my brother bought a sampler pack of flavoured oil thinking it might contain the holy grail of condiments for me)
which is also useful for fake garlic bread?

@JourneymanGeek flavored basalmic is good too

@Mgetz this has the plain stuff
the lemon flavoured oil I am clueless about
it smells like something that belongs on something sweet.

3:42 PM
@rene got milk, honey.
;-)
I also bought mango juice.

\o/

$3 only, not so much. :D
Oh and that's the milk:
@rene ^
It's "enriched milk"

user302202
Looks like something I might be getting from Amazon Subscribe & Save.

The milk?? lol

user302202
If it's sufficiently enriched...

3:47 PM
Last but not least... Hallah for Shabat! :)

I still get milk delivered. Donno what's wrong with the rest of you non-peruvians.

"Fresh milk! Delivered as quick as 3 months!"

@ShadowWizard what is enriched in it? Where I live milk goes from the cow into the package. (maybe with some heat treatment)

user302202
Yeah of course it's not "Subscribe & Save", it's Amazon Fresh service, $15/month.

3:50 PM
@ShadowWizard You buy yours? Amateur :P

@NoDistractionWizard for overseas delivery?

user302202
"How fresh is it?" Amazon-fresh, no more than 6-8 something in the warehouse.

@rene from China

Expect white colored water

Hit-and-run meta participation: create site profile, post, instantly delete profile.

user302202
I think I like this. Keeping various meta posts linked to me is getting tedious.

@VoteDukakis It does prevent participation, though.

Wasn't that the goal?

Well, if it's a bad idea, probably.
Easy way to prevent a question ban.

user302202
I just don't think I need non-meta accounts anymore.

Rob
4:39 PM
@ShadowWizard Is it enriched with melamine?

1 hour later…
5:49 PM
@VoteDukakis merge all teh metas!

6:28 PM
It's a bad idea but not a completly outlandishly bad idea

Are we going to get into another one of those discussions about how downvotes are bad?

@fbueckert Nah. I vote that down before it begins ;) I think Magisch wants to understand why the idea there is considered so bad?

@Tinkeringbell Those are just endless circular arguments at this point, yeah. But is it really worthwhile asking why voting happens the way it has since the inception of the network?

@fbueckert I'm surprised because this doesn't seem like usual -30 material to me
the tone isn't ranty at all. Usually the stuff that gets really bombed is ranty on mSO

I've seen a decent number of posts hit that without being ranty.
Especially when it infringes on, "Hey, let's not do <curation activity>".
I think changes to the curation process need to be strongly backed up, and not predicated on, "New users won't find those, so just let them be".

Rob
6:58 PM
The exaggerator, reverser, wishy washy fault finder, weak solution proposer whom is unclear lives up to his namesake. I think the writing style, admitted lack of participation, and lack of clairity is what sunk the DeadManN.

Rob
7:14 PM
@fbueckert and look at the "Summary" on his website (first link in his profile):
• Excellent communication skills
• Ideation and future orientated
• Professional, confident and proactive
in acquiring knowledge and experience
• Familiar with business practices
and economic concepts

@Rob Well, he's communicating his bad idea very well.

Rob
✔️

He's not taking the time to learn why we dupe questions, which is where the whole thing falls down.

To be fair, that website is an advertisement for his professional services
You ain't gonna write "overzealous and short temper" on your business card

@Magisch Perhaps if you're solliciting to be a fighter of some kind?
Kickboxer? :P

7:19 PM
methinks a short temper is bad for a fighter
anger makes you irrational and easy to trick

Rob
One of the better ideas regarding duplicates seems (to me) to be: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/90620/… - a few points for successfully flagging duplicate content.

@Magisch That's true.

@Rob There should be some incentive to perform curation correctly. Right now, it relies entirely on passion and investing in the ideal.
Which, conversely, is the exact reason all the backlash is occurring as well.

user302202
7:37 PM
@Magisch Because SO users need emotional development.

@VoteDukakis Come on. That comment was edited and later even deleted. No need to keep dragging it up.

user302202
Pretty sure Is There a Privilege to Answer Questions for a User? is asking for "mark as answered" feature.

Oh, that makes sense

@VoteDukakis that would be my understanding.

I left a comment with a link to a dupe

7:55 PM
After a few days just automatically display an alternate color checkmark for the most highly-upvoted answer (with some minimum vote count and percentage of total votes on all answers) if it hasn't been accepted. Having a separate indicator for community consensus is probably worthwhile anyway.

meh

@canon I don't think that's wise.

just remove accepting answers

@KevinB but mah 15 rep

there's enough upvotes being thrown around freely

8:00 PM
@KevinB Yeah, and on a site like IPS sometimes the answer that actually works is massively undervalued, so putting a mark on it helps with ordering it.

Rob
@rene I marked it as a duplicate of that, but it was closed as unclear (once my vote was added), so SE didn't automatically delete my 'dupe comment' (as it would have done if it were closed as a duplicate).

does twitter no longer onebox?

@Mgetz Twitter does no longer onebox.

1 hour later…
9:51 PM
@Rob nah we're not China
@Mithrandir hard to raise cows inside a building. Can get too messy. :D
@rene adding good stuff into it so they can charge more money for it... ;)

Rob
10:28 PM
@Sha gets his milk delivered fresh:

10:59 PM
lol

11:25 PM
What should be done if a user deletes their (downvoted) answer and posts a new, nearly identical answer to evade the downvotes? Just flag for moderator attention or what?

That's usually a good idea. Or downvote
It's a self resolving problem then

Should I vote to delete the new answer and vote to undelete the old one?

Naw. Would be messy

k
Can mods merge answers, including downvotes?
Because this guy has just evaded his way out of 3 downvotes.

11:50 PM
@forest no
