@NoDistractionWizard Turns out, not necessarily so.

user302202
@GregHewgill All users should see the same number of ads regardless of reputation level during the experiment phase. Once the necessary data and metrics have been gathered, we can start the discussion for reducing ads for trusted, active, high reputation users. — Juan M ♦ 5 hours ago

ouch
So it sounds like the bar for reduced ads might be raised considerably.
Thank god for ad block.

@VoteDukakis hmm, does it mean it might be the first site to have ads enabled but no "reduced ads" privilege..?
in another words, no existing site with ads but not the privilege?

user302202
Along with TWP, Photography, and Money - the other three sites with the ad experiment.

user302202
Two of the more active non-tech sites - English and Math - are still ad-free.

user302202
2:22 AM
Yes, to my knowledge the 200 rep => reduced ads works for all sites that currently carry ads.

user302202
I don't know what messing with 200 rep cutoff really brings, what % of traffic are those users anyway? Also considering that the repeat showing of the same ad to the same active user is not what advertisers are paying for.

I imagine the vast majority of ad traffic comes from unregistered users.

Also, it only reduces the leaderboard ads since the sidebar ads will always be shown
and if "high reputation" means "200 rep"

user302202
"start the discussion for reducing ads for trusted, active, high reputation users" does not sound like "reduce ads for 200 rep" to me.

So, they must be trusted (the privilege?), and also active (visit x consecutive days?), and also have high rep (10k?).

2:33 AM
It's not that big a deal because of adblockers.
I mean, most users are going to be using them anyway.

IIRC when reaching 200 rep, you're only shown in-house or Community Promotion Ads.

This will just cause people to remove SE from their exceptions list.

The algorithm might end more complex than the vote reversal script

Is the vote reversal script really complex though?

@forest SE dosen't really care if you adblock.
@forest probably not

2:34 AM
Never seen a paid ad on Stack Overflow or Super User since reaching 200 rep there

@JourneymanGeek Yeah I read the blog post on that.

It's even noted on the "reduced ads" privilege
> We want to emphasize that you should only re-enable banner ads if you want to see them, not because you're trying to support us financially. In fact, it doesn't really do us any good to show you ads for products that you don't want to engage with. So make the decision that's best for you, and that's the one that's best for us too.

user302202
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Try opening a question page and looking at the right sidebar.

user302202
I get MS Azure (+ SO jobs) on AU, where I have > 200 rep.

user302202
Right sidebar ads are not affected by 200 rep level

2:37 AM
@VoteDukakis Technically SO Jobs is in-house

Ha! I also get MS Azure ads in my native language :D
Or, well, the only ads on SE network that is in my native language...

3:58 AM
Shall I remove the "bug" tag to make room?

@MeganRisdal I think since implies "image uploader", removing might be preferable

Solid. Thanks!

No prob :)

And yes this was 100% my tongue-in-cheek way of verifying the fix ;)

4:09 AM
Just doing some late nite bug triaging. We have, umm, one or two things on our bug backlog ... o__o

(if it was possible to remove the "bug" tag and applied the edit on that post, then it might be considered as a new bug instead though :p)

4:35 AM
Is it helpful for me to mark duplicate bug reports as "status-completed" or is it enough for the canonical bug report to be updated? Example: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/324962/…

@MeganRisdal You can't. Bug is required.

Rob
There's often an exception that you need to carefully look for.

Some dupes also got tagged with [tag:status-*], but I'm not sure about the "protocol" :/

Unless I'm mistaken (very possible), that discrepancy is resolved with the new custom question list feature that we're rolling out.
Okay--fair enough. I won't sweat it too much for now then. Thanks @NoDistractionWizard!

Why does the developer survey include things like sexual preference?
It doesn't seem relevant at all. Gender I can understand, but sexual preference?

Rob
4:50 AM
Relevant to what... exactly?

To searching for jobs or development practices.
It seems about as relevant as favorite color.

Rob
It's not a survey about searching for jobs or development practices, though

But it's asked on a site about software development.
I dunno, to me it just feels as weird as if a forum related to sex created a survey that asked people their favorite programming language.

Rob
It's a survey of the people in software development, not a survey about software development

huh

Rob
4:54 AM
It's not "preference", it's identity. One could be any of several groups or a combination and either have a specific preference or none whatsoever.

It had preference as well, i.e. straight vs gay vs bi.

Rob
Oh, I thought you were referring to the image in the Blog post, not a drilled down reference.

oh no I didn't see that image

Rob
Gender did make a difference, perhaps they either wanted to determine if preferance made a difference or leave no stone unturned and none excluded.

5:17 AM
Oh that makes sense I guess.

5:52 AM
@forest cause demographics are useful
@MeganRisdal I donno if you guys have magic powers but meta has a few "compulsory" tags - and bug's one.

Got it. Learned a thing today. Thanks! :)

This is unique to meta, and most of us learn it cause the software yells at us when we don't realise ;p

6:18 AM
As far as I'm aware, even we are required to use one of the four required tags.

imagining "Bug: [bug] tag is missing!"

7:20 AM
@rene eaten by the dog... :D

We need to walk the dog more often

Rob
JT can tell their teacher that the dog ate their homework.

7:44 AM
@canon Finally, someone else who can wiggle their ears!
Juan getting philosophical on the podcast...

@Mithrandir Huh, thought Jon is charge of that

8:03 AM
Although I'm afraid that @Jon is incorrect claiming that the topbar is a "striking black". Luckily, I'm using a script to fix that. Especially on Science Fiction & Fantasy, it's a bit annoying that it's not actually black... :P
Looking forwards to Abby's potatoes.

stack exchange dark mode ftw

8:36 AM
Oh, hey @MeganRisdal. Nice to see you in the Tavern! Welcome. :) (Also, I just happened to notice that your Medium profile still says you work for Kaggle. Just an FYI.)

She's even listening to plz-fix-this rant here... :P

Just went to Medium, checked notifications, noticed she clapped for my story, went to her profile, followed her, noticed the outdated info, remembered she was in here, decided to ping... :P

So the ping was essentially meant to make her change her Medium profile? ;)

The methodology is sound but the conclusions seems shaky at best.

No PM/DM/Comments on Medium itself? @Mith (sorry @Mithrandir24601 lol ;))

8:48 AM
*shrug*

*shogs*

@ShadowWizard I dunno how he can sleep at night, causing Mith24601 so many pings.

@ShadowWizard be careful, remember what happened to 1-8

@Margarine Look, I was here first. ;)

and you were blue first
these days saying "the blue mith" doesn't help anymore

8:52 AM
People kept mixing us up so much that he ended up with a diamond...

@Magisch Does though... there's only one with a blue skinned avatar ;)

Thats a new development though
also I believe the technically correct term is avazulatar

@Margarine who says he's sleeping at night? Might be sleeping during the day like @Journeyman. ;)
@Magisch each got to a final ending

@ShadowWizard well if they were normal humans having been blue for so long they would have suffocated already. They really are vampires.

@Margarine I got asked yesterday if I had taken a bet to eat as much garlic as possible or if I was just really scared of vampires.
....I like to put garlic on stuff.

8:56 AM
Poor guy, doesn't know he's a vamp.
The first stage of grief is denial.

I know, I just wrote about it.
Or, well, actually, it's stages of death, not grief, but... whatever.

Death . . . grief. Technicalities

(I was just researching the Kubler-Ross model.)

@Mithrandir my 2 y/o daughter love garlic cheese (fat cheese, 30%)

@ShadowWizard grilled cheese garlic bread

8:59 AM
yummy

put cheese on bread, sprinkle garlic liberally on top, stick in toaster oven for 5 minutes. lunch.

OK, Hebrew vamps are upside down.

Yay! So much food in star wall now. :P
@Margarine ?thanks!

I like garlic but not having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes for 2 hours after food is over.

@Margarine huh? Why's that?

9:01 AM
You tell me

@Mithrandir thats when you go big or home, whole garlic clove for a sandwich

Eat lots of garlic, never had anything like that. It's you, not the garlic. :D

Or your garlics are wusses.

2 hours later…
11:20 AM
Oops! Something bad happened on math.se!

@JohnDvorak There's probably more sites where something bad happens from time to time. ;)

Sure, but the SE server doesn't usually notice. This time it told me.

Things do seem rather slow, but that might be my internet, the company VPN, or something bad. But the site is working here.

@ShadowWizard I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't mind getting such pings - I quite enjoy sending random irrelevant comments :P

@Mithrandir24601 you're odd just like me! (hope it's a compliment? ;))

11:41 AM
Random very relevant comment here.

I'm so odd I don't even

12:21 PM
Hmm? I got "By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie Policy, Privacy Policy, and our Terms of Service." on the bottom banner of SE again ._.

@NoDistractionWizard Just dismiss it ;)
Did that this morning too, didn't think too much about it ;)

@NoDistractionWizard same

1:05 PM
@NoDistractionWizard yeah, got it too. Looks like some user info (cookie? server side storage?) got reset.
I have a feeling it's related to the slowness of SO.
@Tinkeringbell well, surely it annoys many of the millions of users who got it again. After dismissing it once, they expect it won't show again. :)

@ShadowWizard we scared that user with our comments ... :(

nah... more likely with the downvotes

I'm scared of green color, please don't upvote me :(

giving bounties to @NoD
oh this reminds me, I have a bounty to award on SO... hope it will let me...

"I have a bounty to award"... somehow I imagine SO suddenly has periodical "1 free bounty ticket" lucky giveaway to active user...

1:17 PM
Make that two bounties. Done. :D
100 rep given.
> 0 Active bounties
Not bad...
> 69 Offered bounties for 8,150 reputation
Most went for answers I found useful.

Q: How does highlights view work in Chat?

Stormblessed There's an option to view "highlights" in rooms on Chat. This hides some messages, but shows most of them. How are these determined? It seems to be random, other than showing all starred messages that would have loaded without highlights on.

So instead of fixing the bugs... they work on some rather minor feature. Meh.
(that nobody asked for... but that's not an issue for me.)

1:56 PM
It is the highlight of my day

@rene everything blurry in the flowerbed?

Forwarding calls from my office phone to my cell phone: a good idea or a bad idea?

user302202
Now the parents of students can reach me anywhere...

@VoteDukakis Really, really, really bad unless you have an office cell phone ;)

user302202
(Just finished a conversation with one, while I was at a coffee shop).

Well if you're bored in general and got nothing better to do then yes, it's a good idea to always keep you busy. :D

user302202
2:09 PM
Let's check if there is a TWP discussion of this...

@VoteDukakis It's called a question, not a discussion ;)

@VoteDukakis seems a perfect use for a burner phone line

user302202
Yes, that's what it's called. But what it is...

Proper question would be "Can my employer force me to forward office calls to my private phone?", otherwise the answer is obvious "Do what you want".

@ShadowWizard or something no one noticed before ;p

2:10 PM
nah.... it's hard to miss. :)

actually I think it's been there for a long time

I'd have missed it if not for the question ;p

@JourneymanGeek you don't scroll enough :D

oddly enouugh I do!
I do try to catch up on backlog here and RA

So not high enough :D

2:16 PM
Maybe last experiment: please star this message

aww rip :(

lol
You think amount of stars affect something in the new view? @NoDis

@ShadowWizard FWIW, I'm currently chatting with "hightlight" mode enabled, and want to see if past starred message will suddenly show (though, I doubt it)
At least I can guarantee the "highlight" mode is one of "No Distraction" feature (and you'll miss a lot of conversation...)

@ShadowWizard though...
assuming no one's that familiar with chat's code...
that's a good way to get stuck in before poking around things

2:23 PM
@NoDistractionWizard lol... so it's all your doing?! :D
IMO it's a useless feature, but meh... maybe some will find it useful somehow. Can't judge.

Huh, I just realized a weird thing...

(I'd downvote such feature request, if we had one.)
@NoDistractionWizard you're not really a wizard?
:P

Rob
Yes

lol that look
> I'm going to steal your shoes, and you know it!

no no no
You steal socks, and leave warm gifts in people's shoes

2:30 PM
ewww

The highlight mode is usefully strange...

Someone tweeted about it recently, didn't decide if it was real or not lol
Nice discussion followed. :P
oh good thing Twitter onebox is borked. lol

@VoteDukakis correction: this is a "normal" election, Quant site graduated long ago.

user302202
Need more food on the starboard, I'm hungry

Even in beta elections, users can't nominate other people.

@JourneymanGeek One of our cats loves to stuff his face into shoes.
And drop toys into shoes.
Or things he picks up. Basically, if he gets it, it eventually ends up in shoes.

Good observation. As mentioned, this is a test so we're running targeted ads as the inventory allows. When the inventory is turning or low, you will see ads for Teams and such until another can take its place. This is normal behavior for now. Thank you for bringing this up! — Juan M ♦ 2 hours ago

user302202
Yeah, no wonder "relevant to the community" got dropped from the ad description.

user302202
Moar ads for online Masters degrees in random subjects, plz.

@ShadowWizard I'm pretty shocked so many people never noticed that button before

user302202
It requires scrolling. Scrolling UP! Who does that?

I do... but I've never clicked the button.

3:56 PM
OMG... Shadow even added it to the "recent feature" list...
this made my day

user302202
Looks like it picks up messages in proximity to: my messages, messages to me, and starred messages.

yeah, @NoDistractionWizard nails the mechanics down pretty accurately
AFAIK the intent is to give you a quick way to scan a busy room for relevant messages when you return after an absence
In practice, I usually just rely on the transcript

@Mithrandir It's nostalgic to hear feedback that the top bar is the wrong black. But when I look at that site . . . I see what you mean. Looks sorta dusty, doesn't it?

Dusty black. I like the sound of it.
Like a color theme of a smartphone.

That is why you hire designers. Those are trained professionals to pick colors that needs time to adjust to.
In the end you have to admit they were right.

4:14 PM
@Mithrandir Thanks -- good catch! Updated.

4:29 PM
@JonEricson Yep.
@MeganRisdal :)
@Mithrandir Of course, I also use a userscript to turn that gray background black, so.
So this is my view of the site:
As opposed to normal view:

hmm... might not actually be too harmful to change this everywhere...

> Basically, we need to check with legal and get this updated.

@EKons I have a userscript changing it to be pure black everywhere...

I mean changing it network-wide so there's no need to deal with that special case called "scifi.SE"

@EKons What about my mental health? ;-)

4:39 PM
tbf this is what Mith might suffer from without his userscript... :P

Of course, you should never trust what I set in my userscripts to actually be good design... otherwise MSE would look like this:

@EKons Well, write a script to deflect all the arguments about design changes and I'm down.

design changes bring complaints because they take time to get used to... ;)

And sometimes they are really a bad idea. The trick is to tell the difference.

well... if the complaints keep coming for a few months with no overall benefits, it might be time to revert :P
(note: Mith has approximately as many userscripts as I do for SE, but he has quite a few which modify the design...)

4:47 PM
There are currently 41 userscripts active on this page.

that's what I'm talking about... :P

Userscripts are like Pringles in that way.

lol
I only have 7 active here :P
o_o vintage

I used to be userscript nut too
But now I only have FIRE enabled, and it's not even working

user302202
The best AFD joke was Unicoin, because we could choose the color of the topbar.

Q: please help me to rephrase that my question is accepted by male only moderators

Ericka Brown I have a question about my Travel Stack Exchange post: Where is female public urination common in Europe? Please help me formulate the questions differently. Please do not change the content, it's just words. Thank you for help

user302202
A legit Travel question as is, imo.

user302202
About the same sort of question.

5:41 PM
I don't think the meta question is phrased in ... the best way possible

@VoteDukakis 'same sort' snort. There might be a tiny argument for asking if it's legal to pee outside if you really can't stand toilets, but that's about it.
@JohnDvorak Nor is the main site question :P And I don't even do much on Travel.

user302202
It's important to know what your fueling and peeing options are.

Besides, off-topic is right, as this is data collection for a thesis apparently and not about Travel ;)

I didn't explore the main question in any sort of detail, so don't take my lack of feedback as a condonement

> We believe there are at least two drawbacks of adopting the question asker based “Best Answer.” First, users are more reluctant to contribute answers once the “Best Answer” is selected due to the incentive mechanism designed by Stack Exchange. Second, as we have shown in this paper, the “Best Answer” is really the best answer perceived by the question asker.

user302202
> Considering the trade-offs discussed above, we recommend that platforms display the number of votes in a more prominent position compared with the answer selected by the question asker; we also recommend changing the name “Best Answer” to “Asker Accepted Answer” or other more neutral and accurate names to reduce the bias introduced by the name “Best Answer.”

user302202
I don't think SE says "Best Answer" anywhere... they picked it up elsewhere.

user302202
The "Politeness Bias" paper is here btw

@fbueckert Eh? Where? The discussion on the getting out of Q-ban question seems civil

@VoteDukakis So... it's already called an Accepted Answer and the votes are BIG and above the mark... :/

@Margarine Yeah, I mopped up some spills
nothing bad, but it's dry now :)

Anyway, dinner

@Margarine Enjoy :) What are you having?

Tuna fish, Lavash bread, Medium fat yogurt
I'm a weirdo when it comes to food.
I'm probably also a weirdo when it comes to anything else.

Can confirm.

6:20 PM
Weird food sometimes is the best. I had a sandwich with apple slices for lunch today, and it was pretty tasty

@Tinkeringbell You're doing it right. Ignore the gandalf in the room.

7:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I can. My problem is that my sensitivity to those types of comments is pinned at, "This is outright rude", rather than, "This isn't really a good discussion and it should go away".
@Tinkeringbell At least it's not the KFC double down.
That's a heart attack just waiting to happen.

@fbueckert It's hard, I know. But feel free to raise custom mod flags whenever there's too much discussion that isn't directly related to the question at hand and is getting ruder with every comment :) And... sometimes just not getting into a discussion with a third party is a great tactic too :)
@fbueckert I want one. I had too much healthy food today.

I had cheap ramen for lunch yesterday. Mr. Noodle, so super cheap.
My stomach decided to tell me about how bad it was all day afterwards.

Poor stomach :(

Yep. Lesson: no more Mr. Noodle.

@fbueckert Mine does that too sometimes

7:20 PM
Or perhaps just an entire week of Mr. Noodle, to see if your stomach can acclimate ;)

In my defense, prednisolone is basically stomach torture.

@Tinkeringbell After what happened yesterday, I'd rather not. It involved somewhat frequent bathroom breaks.
I'm not a college student anymore, forced to subsist on the cheapest food I can find, and a young stomach willing to garburate it.

@MikeTheLiar Well, if there were bathroom breaks involved, I sure do hope so!

Semi-random question - is there a history of close vote reasons anywhere? I know they've evolved quite a bit over the years but I'm wondering if the only ones are still around anywhere.

7:27 PM
Not in one place, but there is, yeah.

@MikeTheLiar I think... lemme dig.

Might be able to pull that from the data explorer somewhere but I'm not familiar enough with the schema off the top of my head

@MikeTheLiar meta.stackexchange.com/q/327903/369802 Does that help get a start?

@TravisJ 👋 long time no see

7:28 PM
But if I catch you doing it, Imma use my powers.

@MikeTheLiar This is a good entrance to the rabbit hole: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/184154/…

@Tinkeringbell I have enough close vote reasons at my disposal as it is. Although this does indicate that this information is somewhere in the data explorer

@MikeTheLiar Just don't use one of those to have 'fun'. I hate it when people do that ;)
But yeah, I guess you could use that and find out where they had their info from, or assume they made the entire list.

noise of pointless? ...
I guess it's good that I wasn't around way back when.

7:41 PM
Why did they remove that one anyway?
A lot of questions are noise or pointless and should be closed.

But telling the user that is...rather mean.
And it doesn't do much to really tell them how to improve it.

It is a post
By a new user, full of noise of pointless
signifying closure.

@MikeTheLiar You've clearly never been to a summer camp where the use the dodge vans to cart the kids around

I'm sure you could fit in a few more.

You are correct they need a smaller space:

'tis the season (summer) when students, being away from campus, send various forms in electronic form.

user302202
Normally, I expect "electronic form" to be a cellphone picture of a paper on a wooden table.

user302202
But apparently that is old style. The modern version replaces wooden table by a colorful mattress.

user302202
The paper itself looks like it was forgotten between the sheets a few nights ago.

Adobe Acrobat does have a neat way of "enhancing" camera images, so that instead of appearing to be slightly bent, the paper looks like half of it was submerged in coffee.

@Shog9 well, so it was worth it all! :D
So.... when was it really added?
@Margarine no soup?

@forest If you last remember from prior to March 2015, it's changed since then. (I ran into the same issue back when I rejoined in December '17, with my last major contribution in December '14)

@Margarine how do you tuna fish?

I last remember like... yesterday. But my confusion was cleared up anyways.
Turns out comments reset the grace period, which I didn't know.

@ShadowWizard maybe its always been there
its just odd NO ONE EVER noticed it before someone pointed it out

meta.stackexchange.com/q/327903/384528 lol I wonder how many more client-side checks SE does. :P
