Q: Does taking a picture with your phone on you or putting it through security check colllect any sensitive information?

ToddIm sorry I’m very paranoid, lately I’ve struggled a lot with talk pictures and even traveling. I made a fool out of myself the other day refusing to take a picture with my family. Is it possible that taking a picture while you have things in your pocket, that whoever takes or hasn’t that picture ...

If you're really concerned about your photos getting leaked, just use film.
(and I found a bug)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog But when you put film through the x-ray machine, it might influence the picture...

@MEEthesetupwizard At least here in the U.S., carry-on bag X-ray machines are significantly less powerful and don't damage film, and if you're still fearful, you can always request a hand inspection

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Last time I did this, the security personnel was slightly confused...
Hey, I have 3000 reputation!

@MEEthesetupwizard Where was this? Here in the U.S. there is an explicit rule that says you can request hand inspection of undeveloped film

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I think Spain or Germany.

@JourneymanGeek what a huge spammer
@MEEthesetupwizard In that case, might as well be very careful carrying film to India (I'll probably be flying there soon, via Germany)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog well IIRC, there was only minimal effect, but I don’t know how the effect becomes worse, when you have to go to multiple security controls.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog done.
That user has also posted a non-answer to a recent question.

Yep, waiting for the LQ task to be created (if I flag it, I won't be able to participate in its deletion)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog that's what I am doing too.

Hopefully, it trips the LQ heuristics (if not, a <2k user will need to flag it)

Some mod was faster

10:31 AM
@MEEthesetupwizard the really amazing part was, I was gaming at the same time.

The user was probably deleted/destroyed

well, nearly

No, the answer was manually deleted

okay, but the user account was deleted, right?
The question ist shows "modified by Community"

ah, erm
I THINK that happens when the user is deleted anyway

10:33 AM
modified by nothing

since deleted users are sacrificed to community in a great ball of flame. Or something .
2
Spontaneous human combustion? Totally a user getting merged into community

@JourneymanGeek if that happened, would that user have full mod rights?

When an existing user whose name is already on the homepage gets deleted, the activity is shown as being performed by the Community user.

I know. That's why I thought "something happened to that user" and caused the naa deletion.

@MEEthesetupwizard metasmoke is up. Current failure count: 0

Is this (Area 51 not affected by network-wide suspension) a known thing? Did not find anything on Meta.

user302202
I know about site-specific unsuspensions, but it's hard to imagine this being the case here.

@VoteDukakis who is that?

user302202

@VoteDukakis Which '24 though?

user302202

only API knows...

user302202
And the API says 2024

user302202
Free idea for a userscript that disambiguates the year in suspension notices.

A51 is just strange?

oh, cool

user302202
The API is also strange, by the way. Clicking the link above (or sending that API request directly) will sometimes show only timed_penalty_date (which is the only field requested by the filter), and sometimes also reputation and user_id.

user302202
1:21 PM
So it's either {"items":[{"timed_penalty_date":1715450397}]} or {"items":[{"timed_penalty_date":1715450397,"reputation":1,"user_id":1083704}]}, seemingly at random.

1:38 PM
While we are talking about network-level bugs, I don't think it is by design that images are not resized to fit into the profile text box. (Example: my profile - stackexchange.com/users/11267045/mee-the-setup-wizard)

The one I finished crocheting last night, and posted on Twitter :)

Yup. Time to go to bed. I read crocheting as cooking.

Q: Is it likely for a question to have 40,000 views and only 2 votes? Or is this evidence towards a bug?

Jesse Reza KhorasaneeI found this Stack Overflow question: Error “Unable to use the video in an ad creative. That has 40,000 views and only two upvotes shared between the question and answer. Meta effect gave it eight more votes, but still.

Completely different example.

"Whenever you use Regex, you end up with 2 problems."
Anyway, I don't vote posts on HNQ ;)
And probably most of them who got baited by the title, read the question, then pressed 'back' button because it wasn't interesting enough to be voted.

3:29 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog IIRC there was this even more drastic example, I think, on ELU or ELL, with 120k views and a score of 1 or 0.

@MEEthesetupwizard That's an imgur-level bug. The page requests a resized image from imgur, but is not getting it.

A: Cropped avatar is shown in full but distorted in the users page

Geoff DalgasYou have stumbled on a very old bug that was missed when we started rendering High DPI profile images. I have contacted Imgur and had them whitelist the 96 size. Hopefully it won't be long until that is implemented.

user302202
This explains what puzzled me earlier: apparently imgur resizes for the powers of 2, plus what SE asks for. :/

Q: The Stack Imgur service is no longer resizing images correctly

Cool FoolI noticed at the start of August 2018 that new images like https://i.stack.imgur.com/MJrvX.png no longer resize when an m is placed before .png. Original image: https://i.stack.imgur.com/MJrvX.png Auto shrunk by page formated to about 609 pixels (desktop), but still full size. l suffix: https:...

user302202
Doesn't look status-completed to me.

user302202
I changed the avatar a few days ago, no imgur-side resize for it on my profile page.

user302202
5:08 PM
Oh, you meant an image in profile text. I think that's by design, the bio box is meant to be scrollable.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog The avatar reminds me of that guy that wanted to help a postgraduate student write a book.
Maybe it's the student this time?
Prepares for "How to get help writing a book as a postgraduate student"

@Margarine Doesn't exhibit the same behavior though. They only use two usernames, and they immediately delete their account after making their post.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog links to Wikipedia on virus mutations

I doubt it. But if you want to, bring it up in Charcoal HQ or comment on the Metasmoke

Beer! It's Konings Nacht

I don't know Konings
Sounds like a mathematician

user302202
So why is epidemiology not on the chart.

user302202
Also, I tend to read this as "being killed by deranged old people you meet to study them" rather than "dying of old age".

@VoteDukakis on the scale of 0-10, what's the value of 10^10?

user302202
> I'm a mathematician.
> Oh! I've always hated math.
> And what's your occupation?
> I'm a gerontologist.
> Oh! I've always hated old people.

5:57 PM
@VoteDukakis My take on the alt text is he's implying an epidemiologist made this chart

user302202
Will have to see what the folks at explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/2142:_Dangerous_Fields decide on.

user302202
@Feeds What if you are a mathematician who specializes in Killing fields?

user302202
I was somewhat perturbed when my differential geometry professor introduced this term without any explanation of the origin of its name.

I think the joke is that if it was the opposite then everything would be zero except possibly a score for astronomy and meteorology, with gynecology on the right side; and no one would get it.

I have a question: can a Doe subpoena be used to find out which moderator sent a private message?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog From what I read on Wikipedia, that's not really what they're used for.
Why's that important though?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog surely those are called subdoenas

6:37 PM
lmao
@Tinkeringbell the only case this would possibly be a problem is if it's abused, but that's handled by SE too

I mean, if you credibly alleged that the identity of a moderator that sent a message is necessary for a civil action to proceed, I don't see how it would be different from any other subpoena for a network or user content site to find out contributors
Whether SE has to respect it depends on the consequences for not doing it and your country of origin, I suppose.

7:04 PM
There are anticyberbullying laws in some jurisdictions here, which means that a moderator can be held legally responsible if something happens to the user as a result of a mod message or suspension.

user302202
As well as a non-moderator, right?

user302202
If something happens to someone because of my post, comment, chat message, vote, ...

Also, if a user can simply get around the recent feature that hides the specific moderator who sent a moderator message or imposed a suspension simply by writing a legal demand to SE, then that feature is essentially dope

"simply"

@Catija I picture a gang of kids in radio flyers on tablets... sucking up the Starbucks wifi from the parking lot out back.

user302202
7:18 PM
I don't see where simply comes in. There has to be an actual lawsuit going on.

user302202
Talk is cheap compared to making that happen.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ... what?
So if a user gets a mod message and goes and robs a bank, blaming it on the message, does that mean the moderator can be held responsible? Sounds like a horribly backfiring law

@Olivia If that message said "go rob a bank", yes

What if it's an unrelated one?
And the user argues something along the lines of "it felt like the only way to recover" or some other "it's really the mod's fault"?

user302202
I believe the term is "throw out of court".

7:24 PM
@VoteDukakis It could be part of a potential future lawsuit

user302202
Which I like to imagine happening to the plaintiff, but is a thing that a judge can do to a lawsuit.

You're breathing. It could be a part of a potential future lawsuit.

No matter what you do, someone somewhere will at some point find something to sue over

user302202
A person can complain about anything and anyone, write their complaint on paper, and bring it to a court. Does not mean the court has to deal with it.

technically they still have to, don't they?
Everyone has a right to a trial and have their case heard and stuff

Lol

Bonus if it's TP

Hi there. This just happened on SFF when improving a suggested tag wiki edit. Before I go and report it as a bug (this query doesn't yield an obvious dupe and I didn't notice that recently), can someone confirm it happens at yours too?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog So basically, your concern is a law that, based on the extremely little you said, is extremely vague that may lead to a lawsuit? Every law that affects SE in some way can technically lead to a lawsuit general action

It's not something that I can test on my own, and SFF is the only place I've got more than 5k, to review tag wiki edits.

@Jenayah that repro-ed for me. It gives me a blank excerpt

7:42 PM
Uh? Completely blank?
(sorry, caps lock)

yeah

Well, here goes the bug report then. Got a screenshot?

Possibly not the same bug then? On yours, the excerpt field is nicely aligned

@Jenayah Hmm. I'm on chrome?

7:57 PM
oh right, forgot config.
fixed, thanks. Edit in your Chrome version if needed

@Jenayah here is chrome and FF in one shot: i.stack.imgur.com/nnjes.png

Actually does that apply to regular edits as well? I don't think I've improved any today.
And I got edit privileges on meta now :/

Let me serial down vote you ...
for science ...

Good luck, probably going to need more than the daily 40 votes :P

Yeah, that was a bit premature
Next time I should check on rep first
to prevent false hopes ...

8:12 PM
Ahah
The opposite might work though, if you've got less than 2k on SFF

I think I have to association bonus on SFF and 100 spam flags or so?

? Spam flags aren't relevant to suggest an edit

Oh, 103 and 29 flags ... 1 vote and 1 edit

@rene oh hey, I was one of the reviewers! It's a small world.

8:39 PM
Hah!

user302202
9:08 PM
@Olivia Right to a trial refers to the accused party.

then the second one
Also, given the example, there's going to be a trial anyway

Stactual is a Q&A site similar to Stack Exchange and Quora, but before you walk away wondering why the world needs another Q&A site, the fact that we are a Q&A site is where the similarity ends. Our users publish succinct Facts consisting of a Question, Answer, and a Reference.

I wonder why they didn't just go Jeopardy! on that

So, it's an iFAQ only site; unlike SE which permits that, and for multiple answers.

only for another 20 minutes though :P

@AdamLear Mind marking at least one of mine as such? I don't want to be dethroned as the user with the most questions... :)

If I come across a report from you that will need to be reviewed, definitely. If not... alas :)
