To clear up the crutch confusion: it is a metaphor derived from the first meaning
when somebody makes a birthday congratulation a day or two late, the saying is "congratulations on a crutch" meaning "that congratulation is coming in so late, it is as if it was injured and had to limp on a crutch to reach you"

@ShadowWizard hold two socks flat between your hands cuffs up and together,, then place both thumbs into one cuff, finally push all eight fingers upward while spreading the cuff around your fingers.
Missed was the critical part about matching the two socks first. I have a lot of socks that look similar, with minor variances. Sometimes it comes down to matching wear patterns to avoid pairing a new one with old; because if they are both sufficiently worn and the pile of good ones is big enough, out they go.
