Has there ever been the idea tossed around of a comment ban?
aka not being able to post comments (maybe without review first) because you were flagged rude too much?

3:32 AM
@SterlingArcher There were, after the new CoC and comment flags revamped
But I think your specific feature request is not yet (inb4 "omg, another review queue")
And thus, morning...

@Shog9 @Catija Is an SRE aware of the errors happening on Jobs? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/381391/… three reports in the last hour.

9:51 AM
@rene Who needs a job on the weekend anyways.

Maybe those that don't earn enough during the week?

Nah, they need a better week job or some kind of universal income. Not a weekend job ;)

@Tinkeringbell I wouldn't apply to another job while at work ;)

@Aibobot That's true.

Seems to translate to 'I'm back to the next'

It did? I didn't translate

I did... before deleting ;)
The Dutch translation gave 'nogmaals <random letters>'

so you deleted valuable content ;)

You have low standards for what makes valuable content ;)

Q: Javascript injection (tested and working as of March 17th 2019)

ZibriIf you run this snippet, on stackoverflow as a question or as an answer, javascript will be injected and if you are registered your nickname will be show in an alert! Obviously this script could have been evil and send to a remote site all your credentials, or do things in your behalf. func...

it's annoying to see idiots posting whatever they believe to be "hacking".

@ɪBᴜɢ left a comment
@ɪBᴜɢ if your answer blocks deletion of the question, maybe delete the answer?
OP self deleted

@rene thanks for the alert

np, if it is on the money making entity I better let you guys know ...

yeah, probably saved us a bit of time. Hat-tip to @Cat for somehow being awake & raising an alarm
Poor SREs not having a very relaxing Sunday morning :(

@Shog9 Gus gets the "credit".

we should send that kid a t-shirt or something
SO-branded bottle?

3:07 PM
He's got a onesie.

@Shog9 doubly fun when a few key folks are out on a convention ;p
@Catija the legendary so onsie? ;p

"Future Stack Overflow User"

Yup
Probably the only thing rarer than SU hoodies ;)

He's not actually worn it yet.

needs to grow into it?
also took me about half a second too long to remember who gus was.
/me is looking forward to getting back to his 'normal' shift rotation. Also getting a lot of sleep tommorrow

3:11 PM
It probably fits now.
It's also short sleeved.
But it's getting warmer.
Also, to be honest, I'm not a fan of stuff that predicts/prescribes a future for him.

Stack exchange is varied enough that nearly anyone can find a site to relate though, regardless of profession or interest

Yeah, but it doesn't say SE.

ah
i'm actually not a big fan how schools tend towards that everyone should learn to code

@Magisch I agree ;p
I also think there needs to be more diversity in tech skills

I think diversity of perspective and soft skills are grossly undervalued in tech atm

3:17 PM
yup

Being real about it, I currently work on webdev, sql, and some ERP stuff. I don't need to be real good at math for that. I don't need a unique ability to visualize workflows, but I do need a good grasp on understanding user's concerns and reading their reactions

Nothing beats the Sunday meta drama... Upvote request denied for election reputation

basically I think we're focusing too much on the technical side of programming at the absolute detriment of all the adjacent stuff that even enables technical solutions to be successful

@Magisch actually that's kinda true for many things

@Magisch pokes tech writing

3:20 PM
there's a few other issues that are non engineering related though, especially in less functional environments

we do have one guy at work who's not a programmer, but has a really good grasp on user needs
as far as our productivity is concerned, he's worth his weight in gold

@Magisch some of our devs are probably essential but...
they apparently scared our junior dev a little too much

coworkers with crappy soft skills aren't fun to work with.

@Tinkeringbell managers with crappy soft skills are worse ;)
Which is why Im going to start sending resumes out next week ;)

"You have been resumed. Continue from last checkpoint?"

3:27 PM
however that's spelled

@Mithrandir Very well Englished :P

pretty sure as of now a tech writer would be better for our team then another dev

always better then coworkers with crappy soft kills

HARD KILLS! HARD KILLS!

To be honest though... I've had other co-workers whose soft skills were lacking as well, but they were perfectly great to work with once you figured out how to manage past that...

3:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell it also depends on the flavour of social awkwardness

I guess I shouldn't just make statements based on one anecdotal co-worker that was a pain in the ass to work with...

@JourneymanGeek s/e/é, but I was just making bad jokes

ah ok
(my contract is up for renewal, and my manager seems to be playing hardball ... even before we're talking money)

there's a difference between being socially awkward, aware of it and taking measures to correct it and fit in better and going "I guess thats just how I am and you have to deal with it"

3:36 PM
more or less

There are and . has the following usage guidance: "Questions that are light-hearted but hopefully of some additional use beyond mere entertainment." has none. What is for? Sometimes, questions get both tags. Should its use be restricted to questions about humor and SE, like "Is it allowed to write joke answers?" or something?

Humor starts when the fun is over
I'll see myself out ...

I don't think anyone though about whether they should, only they could... when creating the tags
@AnneDaunted feels like a question for meta ;p
we might consider tag synonyms?

@JourneymanGeek Possibly. There are questions tagged that are not like this one, although may not be needed, with or being more suitable.
Another topic - the FAQ When should I create a new tag? contains in its answer the following: "For example, on Stack Overflow, if a new programming language has been created and is in wide use, but no one has asked any questions about it, a new tag should be created for it." A bit misleading, isn't it? You usually don't create a tag if there is no accompanying question. This should maybe be made more clear (first question etc.).

3:53 PM
@AnneDaunted that is wrong anyway. You can't create tags out of thin air. It needs a question (best two)

Its vaguely implicit
and you can sometimes end up asking a question then getting someone to create the tag

@JourneymanGeek It's the FAQ. It should be explicit. Else it just causes confusion.

> To create a tag, one must apply it to an existing question. Any user with the Create Tags privilege (300 on most sites, 500 on Meta Stack Exchange, 1000 on Mathematics, and 1500 on Stack Overflow) may add new tags to any question at will by typing the new tag into the question's tags field, and submitting the post or edit1.
seems explicit enough

I saw that, too, but it comes much later

we could swap with "but no one..." with "and there's a need for a specific tag for the language" ?
cause there COULD be questions, just without the tag

4:02 PM
"but no one has asked any questions about it" - could be improved and turned into something like "but you are the first one to ask a question about it".
@JourneymanGeek True, but it's just an example of when it's appropriate to create a new tag, not the only case when it is

Yup
that works. Go ahead and make the edit ;p

No, I'm just bringing to attention what I notice. I leave the execution to high-rep users.

eh
but its your idea. ._.

Just a lesson I learned on MSE

how high is high-rep user? :p

4:16 PM
@AnneDaunted its a terrible lesson

Anyway, regarding "but no one...", there are actually 2 cases: there are existing questions but not tagged with the "core" tag, or there is no question yet.

@Bookends 2 meter

> participate in the online democracy of programmers

You can do it :) Just think of how you did them last week :)

The difference is I can't wing math like I do English :P One is my domain of expertise, the other tends to make my eyes glaze over :p

@Mithrandir Hmm, the eyes glazing over thing can explain some of your chat messages

A: While on vacation my taxi took a longer route, possibly to scam me out of money. How can I deal with this?

Douglas HeldNot a complete answer, I admit. The advice I was given when visiting Istanbul is that taxi drivers often can't read, so that I should give them both a printout of the address and also a simplified map, showing them which roads I expect them to take to my hotel. That the driver can't read roman ...

This other guy was upset here that an answer might be woefully ignorant, right?

Q: It became hard to get answers from experts

rekireI checked my past questions and recognized that it became very hard to get answers from experts. Yeah, I know I could use bounties, but on almost all questions? I have the feeling that complex questions, even if they are very short and simple, won't get answers just because of the continues stre...

user302202
I think this deserved better reception than it got. Bounties are hardly an answer.

user302202
(1) have to wait 48 hours; (2) the kind of extra attention you get for a bounty is not necessarily what you want

user302202
Proposed 30K privilege: can set a bounty immediately.

@MSOGA If I was phrasing the discussion, I would have focused more on the impracticality of doing this for every question instead of just a mention and made it more clear and less prevalent the random possible solutions I threw around (the final paragraphs)

user302202
The sentiment isn't really new, of course.

SO has been frustrating me lately. I always have a hard time getting questions answered. I feel like people aren't answering non-trivial questions as much as they used to.

If "thank you, Jaydles" leads someone to conclude he died, we have a serious misconception going around: that the right time to thank someone is when they are dead.

needs one more delete vote and then we can return to the regular schedule ..

10:11 PM
turns out it isn't that easy ...
