The Tavern is asleep...

Can a 15k+ user please confirm if this is still an issue?

5:31 AM
@rene Just curious: Would I need a separate account to host something like Kenny Bot? I ask because there are a few private rooms which I'd like to keep alive. :)

user437611
I've tried asking Floern too, but apparently they're usually not around at this time of the day.

status-repro

@Bookends Thanks

I tried to unprotect instead, but the same

@Blue not necessarily but its a good idea in general

8:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah, okay. I'll probably create a sock then. :)

user437611
It won't need any rep I think, as I can manually give it write access.

presumably but getting said 20 rep is trivial ;p

user437611
The more difficult part would be deciding a nice name for my sock bot. :P

lol
red, green, octarine...

@Blue what @JourneymanGeek said would have been my response. IIRC Floern is only available in the weekends and not even all weekends for the upcoming months so it might take 6 to 8 for him to catch up.

9:11 AM
@Blue this is also doubly so since you're a moderator

user437611
@rene Oh, no problem. I could perhaps try it with Kenny Bot too. Would you be free sometime during the next weekend? Is the process to set up the bot script documented somewhere?

user437611
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I guess. If the bot starts behaving weirdly... ;)

Principle of least privilege
I think I need a sock for mod abuse...

I prefer foot-gloves

Is this a thing??

9:18 AM
@Bookends quite a few mods end up having one

@Blue next weekend will work for me.

user437611
@rene Sure. I'll leave you a ping sometime around the upcoming Friday evening then. Thanks!

Okay!

user437611
On another note, I managed to suspend myself in SE chat. Probably a bug. Has this been reported on Meta SE already?

user437611
9:27 AM
Oh, nah. I can lift it myself. Cool.

2 hours later…
11:11 AM
@SonictheWizardWerehog even if it is, we should not add "this bug still happens in [time here]". It adds nothing, and doing it once means it should be done to ALL open bug reports, which obviously is a very bad idea. TL;DR: I agree with the roll back. Proper bumping is adding more details or making existing details more clear.

@ShadowWizard I figured I'd be asked about that ;p

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I considered rolling back too, but didn't have enough time to think it through, and by the time I did, you already rolled back. :)
"The bug still happens now" is valid as comment, which also show clear time stamp so easy to follow.

sorry, bumped again!

I'm a little annoyed that I suspect bumping was the intent

@JourneymanGeek might be, but we have worse ways of bumping which are too common, e.g. adding a blank space.

11:19 AM
Its still a minor, content free edit meant to get attention

I was a little annoyed when I responded that I was trying to unprotect instead‌, but it wasn't included in the edit since grace period...

@smileycreations15 general discussion about SE, MSE, and unicorns.

@JourneymanGeek @ShadowWizard The point of my edit was, that the question in its current form, leads people to dismiss it as "an old bug report, may have been fixed". In my opinion, it's better to emphasize in the post that it's not "some old bug report that may have been fixed", that it still happens now.

You could ask here to create a tag wiki instead of "wasting" a question over it.
@SonictheWizardWerehog no, it's not better. It is noise.

@Blue Chat moderators can still post despite being suspended

11:30 AM
Eh, if it has been fixed, I'd answer the question right away

@SonictheWizardWerehog That's what comments are for, and if you want to bump it, bounties.

@Tinkeringbell or valid edits, yeah.

@Tinkeringbell The SE team has specifically stated that "bounties on bug reports tend to be a waste".

@SonictheWizardWerehog they draw attention at least same as edits, so they're not pointless or total waste.
Waste meant "not likely to have the bug fixed right away", not pointless in general.

True, and an edit like Bookends' would have been better if I wanted to bump it without spending rep, plus my text that I added in a comment instead.

so... why do you want to bump it, anyway?

Glad that RemoveAbandonedQuestions is disabled here. For a while it was a zero-voted, low-viewed, non-commented post, so it would have fallen victim to that if it were enabled.
@Bookends To possibly get it fixed?

Q: How do I get attention for old, unfixed bug reports and feature requests without official responses here on Meta?

Sonic the Wizard WerehogI posted a question here on Meta Stack Exchange, or on a per-site meta, regarding a bug I found in the system. I got no comments, or a few comments stating that this is a legitimate bug (and not by design). However, it's been quite a long time, and no official response was ever posted there. Or,...

11:37 AM
what about the rest of the reports? :(
like this...

@Bookends surely we can write a script that will add "This bug still happens as of $now" to all bug reports without status tag which are inactive for over couple of years.

@Bookends You could update the post to describe what happens in modern browsers?

@ShadowWizard except when they're not, like the many SE Android app bugs that I've answered :/
@SonictheWizardWerehog it's the same, nothing to update from me

@Bookends You can post an answer or make an edit that explains that it still happens in Chrome [x]/Edge. I've explained those in the post I linked above.

But I don't want to

user437611
11:52 AM
@SonictheWizardWerehog Hah, didn't know that!

@Bookends Then contact SE? An SE employee said you could.

user437611
And...I'll sure come here from time to time for the coffee. :P

But I don't want to. I could, not I should.

@Bookends not what? Not happening? I doubt any bug on the app was ever fixed without marked as completed.

@ShadowWizard not repro or accidentally fixed

11:56 AM
hehe

1 hour later…
1:16 PM
reads up
@SonictheWizardWerehog the right kind of attention's important though
simply bumping things is less useful than convincing folks its useful

@JourneymanGeek But is using things less bumpful than convincing uses it's folkful?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ but is it thingfully using?

The HTML entity thing.

This could have been prevented by proper use of Hungarian notation. Or just by always converting to HTML at the last possible moment.

6:17 PM
hungarian notation would help... how?

user302202
Maintaining the distinction between strings and pieces of HTML?

user302202

or, y'know, you could just use descriptive names
or not at all, because that particular element comes from a few levels into a data structure and doesn't have its own variable

I'm going for the curious badge. One day I shall succeed ...

@rene What can you possibly be curious about?
You can try making it meta
"I'm curious why some people around here are curious"

How many legit users have "boi" as their username?
Grrrmbl, there will be an extra primary because of just one candidate
So, which one should we blame?
I'd say each candidate get 1/11th of a blame

user302202
OTOH primary makes it possible to make nice real time graphs of votes vs time.

Graphs! All life problems are solved
I think if we throw enough spiking trends at CO2 levels they would dwindle

@MSOGA Hmm...the position listing says it's a New York-based position but the profile says they're from the UK
I guess he's relocating here with a visa sponsored by SE

user302202
The advertisement must be for another position with the same title, otherwise it would not remain after the hire was made. One OS for UK, another for US.

user302202
Based on the name, I'd use "she".

FR: prevent new users (<10 rep) from posting multiple answers to the same question.

user302202
Posting multiple answers is an advanced feature that is rarely needed. When a new user does that, it's invariably for a wrong reason.

Q: Prevent new users posting multiple answers to the same question

ChrisWUsually, users can provide multiple answers to the same question. However there should be a different rule, i.e. one answer per question per user, which is applied only to new (i.e. low-reputation) users (the existing behaviour for higher-rep users would be unchanged): Because new users are le...

user302202
The answer is missing the point. Showing a user a msgbox "edit existing answer" just makes them click once more. They are in the click-through-whatever-until-can-post mode.

@MSOGA Huh, some time in the past I've downvoted that post but now I retracted it because I reserve them for cases that would actively harm the site and not cracking-walnut-with-sledgehammer cases
Is it not an overkill though? The instances where it does happen, going the extra mile and mod-flagging or whatever requires just a little more effort

user302202
8:54 PM
It's not worth dev time to implement, of course.

user302202
But then again, pretty much nothing is, looking at the way things are going.

April fools definitely is!
Don't be so gloomy
Think about @rene
Or daffodils without attitudes if that doesn't help

Yes, think about me! Or even better: have a nightmare about me

@MSOGA what way things are going?
